It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for Crossroads Comics!
This week we’re taking a look at PMD: Hanging in the Balance. Based on the events in PMD: Explorers of Sky, PMD: Hanging in the Balance changes it up a little by following a fakemon protagonist named Miku. Claiming she’s a human and not the strange pokémon known as a Zuctuveil, she joins forces with Haruki the Pikachu to form Team Resplendent in hopes of locating Miku’s lost memories. The story has a very interesting protagonist and does well on having Miku being confused and learning things for the first time. One of the things I really like about this comic is that we, the audience, along with Miku are not sure what a Zuctuveil is, and therefore when things about this fakemon species are explained to her, we learn things as well. It creates a nice sense of immersion for me. In addition, Zuctuveil are stated to typically live in the cold mountains in packs, which helps with some plot holes like your protagonist’s species being rare in the area. The author even includes smaller details when characters describe the protagonist to emphasize that Miku is not your normal Zuctuveil, such as her more physical fighting style or her relative lack of background information. It’s a good comic that worldbuilds in a way you don’t usually see with PMD comics because the protagonist is usually a normal common pokémon, which I really appreciate.
