Avery summons a minefield of sharp stones between them, rupturing from the rock. Head down and charging, the rocks don't appear in the thick-skulled Pokemon's vision until it's too late. It charges straight into the trap, landing right between two stones. The rocks immediately shift and toss beneath him, hurling upward to slam into his chest. The power of the blow on his upper body from beneath is enough to throw his forward-leaning weight up and backwards, sending the Rampardos tumbling.

In a shower of rocks, the heavy creature slams to the rock and rolls down the mountain a hefty few yards. Scrambling, kicking hind legs finally find some purchase on the stone, and when bloodied eyes turn upward, they are not happy. It struggles to its feet, cuts and scrapes riddling the sides of its body--but the adrenaline coursing through its veins and the anger blotting its senses makes it blind to just how hurt it is. While Opal has inhibitions about using dangerous moves, the enraged creature is far from it.

It stands on legs that are somewhat wobbly, but then it spreads them and cements its grip on the earth. The beast stands tall, and then rears back--

Babbs realizes what it's about to do a second too late. "Move!" is all she's able to shout as she reaches with lashing vines to pick up the Axew. Hooves clatter on the stone as she tries to move higher up and out of range, but the old goat isn't quite fast enough.

The Rampardos smashes its head straight into the stone, and the sheer force of it causes the slope to shudder and groan. From the point of impact, a crack races up the stone toward them, hairline for only a moment before it splits and shatters the rock. The earth shakes, layers of rock beginning to slide down the mountain--including the one with them on it. The Rampardos roars its rage, building up a pillar of reinforced stone beneath it in order to raise itself up and out of the debris' path. It wasn't smart, but it also wasn't as dumb as it looked--but it was one hell of a vengeful creature, and it was going to get the Pokemon who had interfered with it or it was going to die trying.

Avery has a different problem, one that makes her situation worse than the rest--they haven't yet unlodged her feet from the stone! She starts to lose her calm as the very ground beneath her begins to slide away with her on it, casting a somewhat panicked glance at Opal!

Triumph and relief spread through Opal as Rampardos flails. This kicks over to worry for a moment as it looks like Rampardos is going to fall all the way down the mountain - but it regains its footing after a few graceless rolls, battered but not broken. Opal turns back toward Avery, hoping that Rampardos’s fall will give her Pokemon a few moments to excavate herself from the stone binding her feet -

“Move!” Babbs barks, hooves slamming as she leaps into action. Opal instinctively takes a step; she stops as she remembers Avery, still clapped down to the rock. She turns - vines flash in the corner of her eye; Axew yelps with surprise as Babbs scoops it up and pulls it further up the mountain - and opens her jaws to give the order.

A hideous, bone-jarring CRACK precludes speech. Opal’s talons instinctively dig into the ground as Rampardos rams its head into the earth and rips it apart. The whole world seems to be shattering, collapsing, threatening to bring Avery down with it. Panic looms, clawing at the back of Opal's mind. But she's been in crisis situations before, and she knows that if she falters, she and her Pokemon will suffer for it. She reaches into her bag, claws shaking from nerves rather than unfamiliarity now, and comes back with two Pokeballs. One of them shoots a beam of red light at Avery, encapsulating her in red light and pulling her back into safety. The other sends that same light up into the sky, but this one forms into a new shape. A huge dragon, all gentle round shapes, emerges from the red glow and flaps blue-and-gold wings. Orville the Dragonite trills with surprise as he tries to take in the scene.

“Orville, it’s me, Opal!” Opal calls, now in full sprint. Her legs are shorter now, but stronger, and her claws provide her with traction that she wouldn’t have been able to get as a human. But it’s not enough, for her or for Babbs. “We need your help!” At the word “help”, the gentle dragon flares his wings. “We need to not plummet to our deaths; use Extreme Speed to keep up!”

Orville nods, sweet and innocent face set with determination. He doesn’t know Fly, so his passenger flight is pretty rough, but he’s fast. His wings hum with white light as he grabs Opal; she can barely feel his claws through her armor. She braces as Orville flaps as hard as he can to lift her, hoping that his speed boost will be enough to keep this expedition from ending with a sudden stop at the bottom of a ravine.

Neon red light flashes toward the Empoleon, enveloping it and freeing it from its rocky prison. Rampardos' roar of fury echoes from further down the mountain as it sees its quarry disappear into thin air. All the while, Opal summons a golden dragon to the chaotic mountain as they try to sprint and scramble against the collapsing sheets of rock.

Babbs cradles the Axew as gently as she can in her vines, but she can feel the creature shaking with panic within their reaches. The old Gogoat manages to keep up with the sliding rock, hopping lithely from slab to slab, but she can already feel her muscles beginning to burn with the stress of it. Even as she watches the Dragonite pick up their Trainer awkwardly, and with some difficulty, she realizes that the creature isn't trained for passengers. She curses lightly under her breath, another vine whisking out from her leaves to root in the thick foliage of her chest. Nestled in the vines there are her own set of Pokeballs. The vine pulls one out and taps the button in the center.

A lightning bolt of neon crimson zaps another large dragon into view. Duchess gives a trill of surprise and spreads her cotton-padded wings, pulling herself quickly away from the rapidly cascading rock. The slender-necked flying type tilts her head curiously at the Gogoat down below, searching for Babbs--if that was Nana, where was her Trainer? But the Altaria quickly notices that this one's leaves are more brown, and spies the red bauble of a telltale hair pin behind the Gogoat's horns. She gives a cry and swoops down, the fluff of her wings multiplying as she guards herself further with cotton. Swooping low, she ducks beside the creature, and in one flying leap Babbs lunges from the rock and to the fluffed-up back of the Altaria.

The cotton is so firm that it almost hurts when she lands on it, but there's comfort in the fact that cloven hooves won't hurt her companion. With a relieved sigh, the Gogoat collapses to her belly, lowering the Axew gently beside her. The creature clings to her, terrified even as they're pulled away from the danger. Babbs keeps a vine wrapped around the child as Duchess follows after Orville.

Opal's ride can only be equated to that of a wooden rollercoaster--fast, but bone-jarring. Orville musters all of his strength to carry the heavy Haxorus, but is forced to stay dangerously low. The Dragonite dips haphazardly from side to side, barely dodging a bouncing boulder that nearly collided with his Trainer. By the time he Extremespeeds to the top, past the danger, he can feel his wings burning with fatigue. He unceremoniously drops Opal at the peak of the hill, and alights immediately after, panting hard, body hunched over and wings limp against his back.

Duchess alights more easily, gently coming to rest at the apex of the rocky hill. Babbs jumps lithely off of the creatures back, setting the Axew down on the ground, and turns to face the dubious glance that her Pokemon has fixed on her. The Gogoat gives a small, almost chuckling bray and steps forward to nuzzle her head against the Altaria's. Duchess gives a happy chortle and returns the favor, with a bit of an I guess this is fine, this is the way things are now sort of a look.

Babbs turns her eyes to the destruction that has been caused down below. Raw earth and stone lays open to the air for as far down as they can see. At the bottom, the landslide tumbles out into a verdant forest, and even now they can still hear massive trunks tearing and crying out as the rocks tumble down and settle. And in the middle of the slope is the Rampardos, descending from its pillar of stone with a roar and making its way slowly back up to them, tired but persistent.

"That thing just doesn't give up," Babbs notes bitterly.

In the whirl of wind and speed and pain, Opal makes a mental note. Next time Mistralton holds one of their passenger flight classes, she’s enrolling every single one of her Pokemon.

The armor plates on Opal’s arms are more than likely the only reason Orville’s claws don’t tear her up. She’s practically doing pull-ups as Orville narrowly dodges rocks, curling her back to lift her cumbersome legs and tail as far above the earth as she can, pushing back against every rocking motion that tries to tear her away from her savior. A boulder rolls by; Orville only manages to sweep aside by a hair’s breadth. Opal decides Don’t look down and tries to will her oncoming heart attack away.

As Opal’s gaze swings around, she sees a flash of blue and white pulling up behind Orville. An Altaria! Opal realizes, wondering if it’s another creature from Ultra Space; that line of thought is cut off as Orville flits upward for a brief moment and Opal can see a Gogoat and Axew riding on dragonback.

A single moment of jealousy for that smooth ride is all Opal gets before her feet slam the ground and the pressure around her upper arms vanishes. She tucks and rolls, careful to keep her head straight so that her blade-like teeth don’t slice her own body or get shattered against the rock. It takes her a moment to pick herself up, but as soon as she does, she walks over to Orville. The poor Dragonite is barely standing, his wings and antennae drooping as he fights to catch his breath.

“Hey, Orv,” says Opal gently, stretching out her tense legs as she goes. Normally, Opal would wrap her arms around the Dragonite and kiss his soft muzzle, but that’s probably not the best idea. Instead, she simply pats him and does her best to smile. “Thanks for the save, buddy. You did a great job.” She reaches into her bag and pulls out a pouch of snacks. She pulls a hearty hunk of jerky out of it and passes it to Orville. “Take a breather; you’ve earned it.”

A light whooshing and a clattering of hooves alerts Opal to the arrival of Babbs and her - probably, hopefully it’s hers, at least - Altaria. While Babbs and Altaria exchange nuzzles - okay, definitely hers - Opal checks over the Axew. Mercifully, the little gal(?) appears unharmed, if a bit rattled. Opal offers her a handful of dried berries, doing her best to croon soothingly. Now that the Rampardos is taken care of, Opal can return the Axew to her parents, or maybe even catch her -

“That thing just doesn’t give up.”

Opal swivels around at the sound of Babbs’s voice. She hurries over to the cliffside, where she sees scattered soil, torn stone, and broken trees. Huge, billowing clouds of dust and debris. “Jeez,” she growls, the ruined landscape making her heart ache. Hopefully that area had been clear of Pokemon already.

The culprit was making its way back up the mountainside, roaring defiantly up at Opal and Babbs. Opal mutters a few choice curses, momentarily forgetting that she’s in the presence of a professionalistic Ranger old enough to be her grandma. “Zekrom give me strength,” she grumbles, pulling out Avery’s Pokeball and releasing the Empoleon right next to her.

“We lived!” Opal proclaims, elbowing Avery playfully. She points to Rampardos. “That guy still wants to eat us, buuut I think you can help put it off our trail. Wanna rain down the power of the heavens with a Brine?”

Avery tilts her head thoughtfully, her fins beginning to glow deep blue with white foam coursing around the edges. Saltwater flows around her claws, which she lifts into the air, then swings downward toward the Rampardos to send twin waves rushing toward it. The angle is awkward, but the attack is strong. Between the salt getting into Rampardos’s wounds and the water making the slope slippery, this will hopefully, finally, get this stupid beast to leave them alone.

Orville is more than happy to take a rest--Babbs captures a small glimpse of the relief on the Dragonite's features as they're drawn into the crimson of the Pokeball. The Dragonite would need to remain there for a while to regain its strength. Carrying a two hundred pound armored dragon up a mountain wasn't the easiest feat when it wasn't something he was trained for.

Babbs can't help but give a nervous bleat of a chuckle at Avery and Opal's celebrations as the penguin emerges from her own refuge. The girl kind of reminds the Ranger of her herself when she was young--inquisitive and lighthearted. Even if she wanted to, though, Babbs couldn't celebrate just yet. As far as she was concerned, they were still trapped on an unstable island on a planet in another dimension, with a very angry Rampardos still trying to march its way up to them. Paranoid of another earthquake, she stays on her toes, her vine returning Duchess to her own ball. The Altaria gives a chortle as she withdraws.

Avery delivers an impressive attack down the mountain. Water rushes down the slope and the Rampardos, with its head down as it heads steadily and unyieldingly up the mountain, doesn't hear it soon enough. Salt digs heavy into its deep wounds, grinding like sand into the raw flesh as the impact sends it almost toppling back down the mountain. It catches itself, roaring in agony. Furious, it gazes upward at them and takes a step up, but even from the distance the group can see the beast's legs shaking unsteadily. Clawed feet hit the mud and it immediately slips. Its weight thunders onto its side, and it grunts as the mud joins the salt.

Finally, too weak to move up and the ground too slippery to do so even if its body could, it gives a groan and swings its head away and to its right. The Rampardos departs. Its gait is strained, heavy, as it hauls itself away, disappearing over the curve of the mountain to the group's left.

Babbs finally breathes a sigh of relief. Even as she does, though, a splintering cry bursts from down the mountain... but it's not the Rampardos'.

At the sound, the baby Axew perks up. It tosses a puzzled glance back to the Opal, and then realization and panic streaks over its features. Frantic, it gives a bleating cry and begins to stumble down the mountain, tripping and stumbling and tumbling all the way. Babbs gives a baa and leaps after it, dread settling slowly in her heart.

Watching the Rampardos turn tail and walk away is immensely satisfying after the Rock-type nearly killed Opal. Not to mention Babbs, both of their Pokemon, and the Axew. Unable to help herself - the opportunity is too good; when else will Opal get to do this? - Opal stands forward, rears her head back, and gives a roar of triumph. The sound is fulminous, booming across the valley below. Opal feels her talons tremble slightly beneath the rumble of sound. Opal’s jaws spread in a grin - though she feels a bit sheepish as Avery gives her a “seriously?” side-eye.

Embarrassment turns to nervous shock as a Haxorus roar comes back. Opal looks down at the scuffed-up Axew and then back down at the valley, wondering who was calling. Had Rampardos found another innocent Pokemon to attack? Was this Haxorus responding to Opal’s roar as though it was a challenge? Or is this the Axew’s parent? Opal realizes that she’s torn, here - on the one hand, Axew is young and if she wants to go back to her parents, she should; on the other, Opal’s gonna miss the little dragon if she does manage to hand her off -

And just like that, Axew makes the decision for herself.

Watching Axew try to scramble down the mountainside, Opal’s heart skips a beat. Axew aren’t natural climbers and this slope is unstable; this cannot end well. Opal’s first instinct is to have Orville pick up the young dragon, but that won’t work either. The poor thing is still exhausted from saving Opal, and a wiggling, angry Axew would be a lot for one Dragonite to handle.

One step at a time, Opal thinks, and she reaches into her bag. Food won’t stop Axew from running to mother, but if Axew is just a little calmer, they can all take a moment and figure out how to get Axew home without it getting killed. Opal’s claws close around a vial, popping the cork off as she runs toward Axew. A scent wafts out of it, a mix of oils and something floral. The cleverly-named calming fragrance is a useful tool in dealing with Pokemon - especially dragons, who are noted for their high-running emotions. Opal thanks the gods that she didn’t remember to take the fragrance out of her bag, then kneels down next to Axew, putting her free arm around Axew’s side and moving the fragrance close to Axew so she can get a good whiff. She doesn’t want to hurt her, or force her to stay, but even moreso she doesn’t want Axew to go tumbling down and get hurt or worse. She holds on tight, trying to calm Axew with the gentlest murmurs her Haxorus throat can make. “It’s okay,” she croons, “we’ll get you back to your family. But we can’t just go running in, alright?”

Still keeping a firm hold on Axew, Opal turns to Babbs. “Do you have any ideas on how we could get this little one back to her parents?” she asks. “Orville is exhausted, and I don’t exactly trust myself to climb down an unstable rock face with a passenger.”

Even though she knows that she's perfectly safe, the herbivore instinct within the old-woman-turned-Gogoat gives a little shiver at Opal's triumphant cry. That kind of natural, impulsive fear is the strangest of feelings, like her very bones recoiling from the source. Human "gut feelings" had nothing on the intensity of that, that was for sure. She'd always known, but never fully grasped just how out-of-touch they all were to their instincts as humans.

Axew squirms frantically as a draconic arm is swept around it. Its blades lash from side to side as it tosses its head, but they bounce harmlessly off of Opal's armored plates. It isn't until a vial is held to its nose, releasing quite the soothing fragrance, that the poor creature even begins to calm. Panicked breathing begins to slow, breaths becoming deeper and deeper as it inhales the scent. The blood pumps a little more quietly in its ears, and things feel at least a little better, if only for a moment.

Another echo of a roar bounds up the slope, and the effect of the fragrance is nearly undone--but it persists just enough to keep the Axew from re-entering its frenzy. Instead, it gives a helpless bleat, one that croaks from its lips like the scrawniest of roars. It looks back to Opal pleadingly. The Haxorus' soothing croons are familiar but not in a way that they need to be--it reminds the Axew of its mother, deepening the void in its heart.

Opal turns to Babbs to ask about passage down the mountain. Babbs thinks for a moment. Duchess could carry Babbs and the Axew at most, but the weight of a whole other Haxorus wouldn't work out. They had no clue what other worlds awaited them, and with their only other passenger Pokemon, Orville, down for the count at the moment, Babbs didn't want to leave them stranded by wearing out her Altaria, too.

Vines extend from beneath leafy pelt, reaching to curl gently around the Axew, freeing it from Opal's grasp. "I can hold 'em steady while we make our way down the mountain," she responds. The Axew gives a cry of surprise as it's pulled from the Haxorus and dangled over open air, but Babbs doesn't give the youngling much time to panick. Before the Axew knows it, it's nestled into the leaves on the Gogoat's back. Her vines hover at the ready. Prepared to stabilize the Axew if something happened, she began to pick her way slowly down the mountain. It looked like there was a bit of a more stable path on the right, even if it would take a bit of concentration to keep one's footing there. Babbs gestures Opal onward with a vine.

Looking into Axew’s huge, pleading red eyes, Opal almost lets the little dragon go. The Axew must be having the most rotten day of its life - separated from its parent, then attacked by a territorial Rampardos that nearly sent it plummeting to a rocky demise for no reason other than sheer malice. And as the final, unfortunate stroke, she’s seemingly stranded up in unfamiliar terrain, far from home. Fortunately, logic wins out over pity; with a decisive but gentle motion, Babbs scoops up Axew with a pair of vines and sets her up like a kid riding a pony. The sight elicits an amused snort from Opal. Mercifully, the Axew doesn’t protest this change, though she seems to be more perplexed than contented.

Having gotten the would-be runaway taken care of, Opal stands up and turns toward Avery. The Empoleon looks at the mountain’s craggy, crumbly sides and back up at Opal incredulously, but Opal just shrugs and does her best to smile without showing a mouthful of razor blades. “I’ll be fine,” she says. “I’m not that graceless. Are you good to stay on call?” When Avery nods, Opal recalls her Empoleon and stuffs the Pokeball safely into her bag. While she’s at it, she zips the pockets for good measure - she’s pretty sure she won’t be taking any falls, but she’d feel pretty stupid if she jarred her bag and spilled her supplies down the mountainside.

Babbs is busy testing the terrain with her hooves. For a brief moment, Opal’s not sure if she can follow - Babbs’s Gogoat form is built for climbing; Haxorus aren’t exactly famous for scaling mountains. However, as Opal shifts her bag and makes to follow, Babbs lifts a vine and gestures Opal onward. While the path isn’t exactly an easy one, it’s walkable. Opal’s claws screech and scrape in the stone as she tries to dig her toes in, but she manages to follow for the moment.

With careful steps and scrapes, they manage to, miraculously, pick their way down the mountain without any incidents or casualties. Babbs releases a long-held breath as soon as they're down, where the rocky rubble spills wide out into the forest. Even from here, she can see the kind of damage that the landslide had done. The upper branches of fallen trees reach just above the surface of the raw, earthen swath, gasping for breath in the mountain air, suffocated beneath the stone and dirt. Paths of broken trunks mark where boulders rolled far beyond the initial spew, taking everything it could with it.

The cry comes again as they reach the bottom, and this time, not even Babbs' vines can restrain the creature. She reaches for her as she hears it, but the babe thrashes her head and bladed maw cuts straight through the restraints. The elderly Gogoat gives a bleat of surprise and pain, stumbling back, vines recoiling to nurse their cut ends underneath grassy pelt.

It only takes a couple of seconds for her to gather her bearings and step after the child. She doesn't do so urgently, however--the expectant weight of dread in her gut is too heavy for that. The Axew scrambles across the dirt and rock debris and toward the booming sound. Her wailing cries echo back to it.

They enter the forest. Babbs notes immediately how even at its edge, the forest is old, with thick trunks etched with heavy grooves. The babe frantically stumbles and crawls over the large, protruding roots. The tops of fallen trees begin to encroach on their paths, and where the Axew charges through, they step carefully around. Finally, the Axew climbs over the final obstacle: a fallen trunk.

Sunlight falls from above, cascading down into the artificial clearing created by the disaster. Trunk after trunk overlaid atop one another, intertwined like a giant wicker blanket across the large expanse. The Axew pauses at the edge, uncertain, and gives a bleating cry. It's answered by a growl, a growl much weaker than the roars they'd heard only minutes before. The child hones in on the sound and finds her mother.

"Oh, no..." Babbs breathes as she watches her worst fear unfold before her.

The two collapsing trees likely crushed her chest and abdomen instantly. Only the plated shoulders and bladed head protrude from beneath the hulking masses, the rest disappearing at a sickeningly narrow point beneath. Gashes mark the wood above her, where the Haxorus had struggled with thrashing head and blades to try to free herself. Even from here, the old Ranger can hear her labored breathing, and she's surprised that the creature had managed such a series of earlier roars in the first place. It's obvious that whatever energy she'd had then is gone, now.

The babe sprints toward her mother with a high-pitched wail. She frets over the juncture between body and tree, sniffing at it, gently placing her tiny hands on it and giving a confused and worried croon. The Haxorus gives a low, wheezing, rumbling roar, head lowered against the dirt. The Axew moves to her mother's face. Her body slowly lowers to the ground next to her fallen mother's neck, curling against the armored plates, and tucks her head beneath the Haxorus' large blades. And she rests there, low whines barely reaching over the sound of the other creature's difficult breathing.

Lips taut, Babbs casts a glance over to Opal. "We can't help her mother," she murmurs, and even from her tone one could tell that it shatters her heart just to acknowledge it. But she's seen things this bad before. This is why the Park rules were so strict about fire and earthquakes. The Axew's mother was probably only one of many, many lives lost in the Rampardos' landslide. "But we can help her." The Axew wouldn't make it long on her own, especially with bullies like the Rampardos still lurking around. It looked like it was up to them, now.

There’s a thin silver lining to Rampardos’s destruction - when the mountainside was split, it left behind plenty of crags and rough edges for the travellers to grip onto. There are a few times when Opal’s feet disturb a cluster of pebbles and the sound of the rockfall makes her heart judder, but the climb is mostly uneventful.

Opal almost wishes it were more distracting work. She has plenty of time to take in the ruination of the forest, the scattered branches of trees, torn trunks still bleeding sap, the reddish mountain rocks painfully alien among what remains. Painful gouges mark even the earth itself, in places where the landslide’s impact churned lush grass into dirt and pulp. Fierce anger stirs in Opal’s chest. This kind of destruction is why there are so many laws on Pokemon battling. All of this caused by one unbalanced, overly-territorial Rampardos that’s probably just going to walk away. It’s sickening.

There’s another cry, and Axew is off like a shot, too fast for Opal to stop. She was too fast for Babbs, too, apparently - the Gogoat is wincing and withdrawing her sliced vines. “Are you okay?” Opal asks, but Babbs is still walking, her stride slow but determined. Opal frowns. Is the old Ranger afraid of the wild Haxorus? Hurt? Or just old? Regardless, Opal charges forward, shouting, “You don’t have to come; I just want to see her off!”

The charge lasts about ten seconds. A branch catches Opal in the face and nearly pokes her eye out; a few bounding steps later, she nearly trips over the roots of a fallen tree. Chagrined, she works to keep a quick pace, but she’s so big that she gets caught on nearly everything in the mangled forest and she’s not experienced enough with her blades or claws to cut through the detritus. For a moment, Opal’s worried she’s lost track of the Axew entirely, but then she hears the youngster call out again. The fearful cry is followed by a pained growl.

Opal feels numb as she clambers over the fallen log, her movements mechanical and clumsy, her feet and tail dragging in the dirt. Faint memories of Opelucid Gym injuries - a Druddigon with a shattered leg; a challenger’s Slurpuff who’d been so badly burnt it had needed an amputation; a Zweilous who’d been cut so badly that blood loss had nearly claimed its life - cross Opal’s mind at the sight of the maimed Haxorus, but she’s never seen anything this bad.

If Babbs’s intent was to console Opal, she’s failed. As soon as the old woman - Gogoat - whatever! - speaks, a spark of fury lights through Opal’s bones. “What should we do, then? I’m not just going to let her die!” she snaps. The words are scattershot, without regard for where they land. She brushes past Babbs, tail lashing, and sets her shoulder against one of the trunks. “We can move these trees!” The downed giant fails to budge an inch, even against the muscle of a Haxorus. “Or, I could catch her, and then we could get to a med center, and…!” her wild gesticulations and mile-a-minute speech slow to a halt. She can hear the rattle of breath in Haxorus’s lungs; it’s labored, painful, and growing ever weaker. The horror on Axew’s face, the solemnity on Babbs’s - Haxorus’s glazed, staring eye - finally register. The fire is snuffed as quickly as it was kindled.

Listless but deliberate, Opal sits down beside the two dragons. Slowly, concern tempered by caution of bladed tusks and causing panics, she reaches out both claws, laying one on Haxorus’s shoulder and the other on Axew’s. “I’ll take care of her,” she says, hoping that her intent can provide some measure of comfort. As gently as she can, she presses her forehead against Axew’s, trying to be something solid to hold onto.

After a few minutes - long after there’s no sound but Axew’s pained crooning and the sound of the erstwhile humans’ breathing, Opal speaks again. “We should go. I’ll take care of you.” She takes both arms now, wrapping them around Axew in a feeble attempt to shield her from her loss. “Please, come with me, and I promise I’ll do everything I can for you.”
