Your best bet is not to live in cities themselves. Live in a town just outside of them that's within a reasonable commuting distance.
But yeah, high rent is exactly why places like San Francisco are having so many problems with homeless people everywhere. Many of them even have full-time jobs, but rent's just too high for them to live anywhere in town.
Honestly that's the way to go - live close to the city. Fortunately I'm in Phoenix, where no one wants to live and rent is relatively cheap (for now) even though it's pretty big.
yeah some places are just outrageous with rent charges. I gotta be totally honest there. They make it near impossible to be able to manage yourself.

I've found that the closer to the coast or to a major industry you are, the more the price is gonna get raised. The little college town I went was like 1/3 college students, and that meant they could really jack up the rates there.
Yeah I've been looking into the suburbs of Baltimore but it's just expensive anywhere around DC.
Yeah, I've been looking at suburbs, too. Don't think I want to have a big lawn, though. Yardwork isn't one of my favorite things to do. :P
Yeah I don't like big yards. Some reason my parents do or my mom at least. She's afraid the dogs won't have enough room to run and play otherwise. I prefer smaller yard for sure.

Yeah, if you have dogs, a bigger yard is probably better. For me, it's more of a matter of mowing grass. I don't want that to take the whole dang day and feel dead-tired afterword.
That and weeds. Man, the weeds have been on adrenaline and caffeine drinks this year.
Yeah if I ever get a house I'm not sure which type of lawn I'd want. I definitely want a dog, but which type of dog I get will dictate yard size for sure since a Corgi needs less play area than say a Husky.
