Neith paused when she saw her next opponent. Wait, why is she dressed as a Cowgirl? Is there a local cosplay tournament being held afterwards?
Neith’s opponent sent out a tall jackal like pokemon. Neith didn’t need to know about Sinnoh pokemon to recognise it as a Lucario: strong close range fighting moves, and a few long range aura attacks. Very few weaknesses. Even able to Mega evolve. Lucario was the number one pick for most new trainers aiming for the pro leagues.
Neith turned to her Fennekin. “Ok Fennel, this time I just need you to weaken them. This one’s really tough so don’t worry if you can’t win all on your own.”
The Fennekin used the same tactic as before, sending out rapid fire Embers to try and keep the pokemon away. At first it seemed to be working, until the Lucario ran straight through the fire, ignoring the burn it gained, and slamming Fennel with a Bone Rush. As Fennel struggled to get up, Neith called her back. “You’ve done enough, that was great.”

Swapping to her next ball. I really hope this works.
The unnamed Starly was released for the ball, still looking as angry as ever. If Lucario doesn’t annoy it, then this could go badly.
Luckily, the opponent one again made the first move, hitting the bird square in the chest with an Aura Sphere. Neith didn’t need to be able to read auras to know that this Starly was now furious.
Neith tried half heartedly to give it some commands, but the pokemon wasn’t listening. Not that it wasn’t doing a good job on it’s own. The Starly seemed to be experienced at battling, targeting the spots that were already burned to do more damage. For a moment Neith thought it was going to win, but as it lunged in once again, the Lucario grabbed hold of the Starly, and unleashed a point blanc Force Palm, sending the pokemon flying nearly the entire length of the arena.

Neith reached for her last pokeball. “You can do it Escutcheon!”
The Lucario was strong, but the previous battles had obviously taken their toll. Esc stood warily, getting grazed by the occasional Aura Sphere, but otherwise keeping a good distance away, sizing up his opponent. Then, when the Lucario stumbled slightly from an earlier injury, Esc put on an unexpected burst of speed and Tackled the Lucario to the ground in one blow. After checking that it was indeed unable to fight, Esc trotted back smugly, head held high in the air.

Neith could hardly contain her delight. Two victories! Maybe she was good at something besides computers after all.
Neith bowed to her opponent, barely containing her grin. “Thank you for the match.”
As Neith left the arena, she felt a feeling of dissapointment. She had been doing well, but would fail to go the full distance not because of lack of talent, but because she coudn't afford to enter it. Biting her lip, she tunred to the rest of the group.
"Hey, you guys? Can any of you lend me some money? I just need enought to enter the last round. I'll pay you back as soon at the tourney's over, I promise!"
(And I'm gonna assume that someone did just to not hold up everything)
