Neith paused when she saw her next opponent. Wait, why is she dressed as a Cowgirl? Is there a local cosplay tournament being held afterwards?

Neith’s opponent sent out a tall jackal like pokemon. Neith didn’t need to know about Sinnoh pokemon to recognise it as a Lucario: strong close range fighting moves, and a few long range aura attacks. Very few weaknesses. Even able to Mega evolve. Lucario was the number one pick for most new trainers aiming for the pro leagues.

Neith turned to her Fennekin. “Ok Fennel, this time I just need you to weaken them. This one’s really tough so don’t worry if you can’t win all on your own.”

The Fennekin used the same tactic as before, sending out rapid fire Embers to try and keep the pokemon away. At first it seemed to be working, until the Lucario ran straight through the fire, ignoring the burn it gained, and slamming Fennel with a Bone Rush. As Fennel struggled to get up, Neith called her back. “You’ve done enough, that was great.”

Swapping to her next ball. I really hope this works.
The unnamed Starly was released for the ball, still looking as angry as ever. If Lucario doesn’t annoy it, then this could go badly.

Luckily, the opponent one again made the first move, hitting the bird square in the chest with an Aura Sphere. Neith didn’t need to be able to read auras to know that this Starly was now furious.

Neith tried half heartedly to give it some commands, but the pokemon wasn’t listening. Not that it wasn’t doing a good job on it’s own. The Starly seemed to be experienced at battling, targeting the spots that were already burned to do more damage. For a moment Neith thought it was going to win, but as it lunged in once again, the Lucario grabbed hold of the Starly, and unleashed a point blanc Force Palm, sending the pokemon flying nearly the entire length of the arena.

Neith reached for her last pokeball. “You can do it Escutcheon!”

The Lucario was strong, but the previous battles had obviously taken their toll. Esc stood warily, getting grazed by the occasional Aura Sphere, but otherwise keeping a good distance away, sizing up his opponent. Then, when the Lucario stumbled slightly from an earlier injury, Esc put on an unexpected burst of speed and Tackled the Lucario to the ground in one blow. After checking that it was indeed unable to fight, Esc trotted back smugly, head held high in the air.

Neith could hardly contain her delight. Two victories! Maybe she was good at something besides computers after all.
Neith bowed to her opponent, barely containing her grin. “Thank you for the match.”

As Neith left the arena, she felt a feeling of dissapointment. She had been doing well, but would fail to go the full distance not because of lack of talent, but because she coudn't afford to enter it. Biting her lip, she tunred to the rest of the group.
"Hey, you guys? Can any of you lend me some money? I just need enought to enter the last round. I'll pay you back as soon at the tourney's over, I promise!"

Amy watched a few of the other battles go back and forth. Sophie was doing quite well to handle herself, that was for sure. Amy took back her now healed pokemon and turned back to the battlefield. Her opponent sent out a Larvesta. Bug and fire type. "That means water is my best bet. Hunter, let's lead off with you!" The totodile cheered as he was sent out from Amy's pokeball. The two opponents got into a fighting stance. "Alright, Hunter start off with water gun!" The totodile tilted his head back and unleashed a burst of water, soaking the bug. It screeched in pain before spraying Hunter with silk. It then let out a ear piercing buzz, showing how much higher level it was than Hunter, as it knocked the totodile out in one hit.

Amy returned Hunter to his pokeball before sending out Terry. More water might just put this flame out. "Go! Bubble barrage!" Terry kept his distance, dodging the silky strings while unleashing series of bubbles. The tactic worked for some time, but the larvesta had more stamina and eventually was able to outspeed Terry for another one hit knock out.

Amy returned Terry to his pokeball and sighed. Then an idea struck her. Water wasn't its only weakness. "Alright Cordelia! Finish him off with a wing attack!" Cordelia struck try and true. Acting quickly, she dove and struck the larvesta, knocking it out with one strike. "Nice!" Amy shouted, calling Cordelia back to her pokeball and passing her pokemon off to the healers.

When Kinnie's opponent stepped out from the crowd and brandished a poké ball, Kinnie focused and tried to assess the situation. When a small white and black birdlike pokémon emerged from her opponent's poké ball, she thought about her choice of pokémon. She looked down at Hannig, who seemed to freeze up at the sight. She briefly wondered if the bird pokémon was a natural predator to small, grassy creatures like Hannig. Noting this, she clutched her blue pokémon's ball and clicked its button, revealing her newly caught Vilne.

She, however, had not a clue what this pokémon was or what it could do. It was then that she thought back to how she had been given a device that was meant to record data for each pokémon that she captured, so she brought it out and quickly learned a few things about this blue creature: its species was shinx, this one was a male, and he was an electric type. She pointed it at their opponent and learned that it was a starly, and a flying and normal type. She flicked back to Vilne's page and scrolled through the short list of moves he would probably know at his level. Although he knew no electric type moves, which would work well against the starly, he had the advantage anyway.

After putting up a reasonable fight, Vilne went down and the starly still stood. It looked exhausted, which Kinnie told Hannig to take advantage of and finish it off.

At the end, Hannig stood with only a small amount of stamina remaining. He was panting, having taken a good blow from the starly, but waddled back to Kinnie when it was established that the battle had been won.

He rested his head against Kinnie's shin and she stared at him, then bent down and placed a hand on his head. He groaned and collapsed, still conscious but clearly tired.

The organiser shook Matthias' hand and handed him certifucate to say that he had completed basic battle training, along with a small pouch of prize money.

"Before you go I have someone who wants to meet you. This is Carl! He is a Pokemon breeder."

A strange looking man in black and red robes walked up to Matthias and shook his hand.

The man waited until they were alone and then whispered to Matthias, "My name is not Carl. I am not a breeder. This is not my real face. You have caught the eye of someone important. This is a test. Do not look for us! We will find you."

With that he handed Matthias a strange egg and walked back into the crowd and vanished.

Amy received her pokemon back and stepped forward for her final battle. This was for all the money. Her opponent though, seemed to be anything but a beginner. A confident smirk on his face, he lowered his hat then sent out a rhyhorn. Amy could tell just by looking at it this thing was strong. Had he gotten it as a gift? In a trade? Who knows. But she had type advantages. Amy took a deep breath and sent out Terry. One final battle for all the marbles. "Let's take a gamble then," she said.

"Terry! Bubble barrage let's go!" The piplup began to his ranged attack onslaught, easily outspeeding the much bulkier rhyhorn to deliver a huge chunk of damage before the beast was able to ram him aside like a plastic bag in the wind. Jumping up to catch the piplup, Amy smiled and returned him to his pokeball. Alright, phase two. Spinning the pokeball on her finger, Amy sent out Hunter next. "Hunter, you know what to do! Water gun, rapid fire!" "Toto!" Hunter raced in close and leapt over the rhyhorn, firing on multiple water guns as he drew his opponent close in like a matador only to dodge at the last second. However, even with his large depletion in stamina, the rhyhorn was overall just stronger, and eventually nailed Hunter in a one hit KO.

Amy returned him to his pokeball and glanced at the Rhyhorn. Not much HP left. "Cordelia, to the skies! Hit and run tactic!" Cordelia repeated the same swipe and dodge tactic she had practiced on their last opponent. Her limbleness in the air allowed for graceful and well timed dodges. But after a couple hits, the opposing trainer caught on. "Horn attack, straight up!" Amy couldn't call out a dodge in time as the rhyhorn delivered a direct hit to Cordelia, knocking the starly out. She took a deep breath in and returned Cordelia. Fine fine. She had one last hope left.

"Karl, front and center! The show's about to start!" The kricketot chirped as he was sent out. Getting into a battle stance, he waited for Amy's command. "Draw him in with bide!" The rhyhorn charged as she predicted and hit Karl with his horn before Karl began to spray silk everywhere. Coating the rhyhorn, Karl continued to bide his time as the rhyhorn was frozen. As Karl unleashed his energy, that was it. Even on his last legs, Karl had won the battle.

Taking the egg, Amy could feel how warm it was in her arms. It felt like a fire type egg for sure. That could prove useful when it hatched. Plus, having this natural heater was going to prove nice in the chilly Sinnoh air. Taking a deep breath and collecting her healed pokemon, Amy pulled out her pokedex and decided to check the stats of her team. Sending them out, she began to scan and was delighted to see it looked like they had grown in strength. They all looked healthy as ever too!

Kinnie was feeling strangely energised after the first battle she had, and was pleasantly surprised to find that both her pokémon were healed before the beginning of the second round. This time, the trainer sent out a floating pink pokemon will hollow eyes. Hannig seemed fine to let Vilne handle it, so Kinnie brought out the shinx.
