For the fourth day ofDecemberChristmas, instead of getting four calling birds, which I don't know what you'd do with anyway, you get Do They Know It's Christmas? by BAND AID. Now, you might have heard this Christmas song before, but to me, I think it's pretty kickass, has a great beat, and the lyrics are both powerful, meaningful, and sentimental. For these reasons, it's one of my favorites.
LYRICS:
It's Christmastime, there's no need to be afraid
At Christmastime, we let in light and we banish shade
And in our world of plenty, we can spread a smile of joy
Throw your arms around the world at Christmastime
But say a prayer to pray for the other ones
At Christmastime, it's hard, but when you're having fun
There's a world outside your window, and it's a world of dread and fear
Where the only water flowing is the bitter sting of tears
And the Christmas bells that ring there
Are the clanging chimes of doom
Well tonight, thank God it's them instead of you
And there won't be snow in Africa this Christmastime
The greatest gift they'll get this year is life
Where nothing ever grows, no rain or rivers flow
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?
Here's to you, raise a glass for ev’ryone
Here's to them, underneath that burnin’ sun
Do they know it's Christmastime at all?
Feed the world
Feed the world
Feed the world
Let them know it's Christmastime again
A few years ago, I sought out to burn a CD packed with my favorite Christmas songs and this was the first to go on there. Beyond being what I feel is great, quality Christmas music, it serves as a really good reminder to remember that not everyone wakes up on Christmas morning with all kinds of goodies under the tree. And while the song specifically mentions Africa, there's places all over the world where poverty, war, famine, and environmental disasters make it hard to enjoy the holidays. If you can, try to volunteer or donate something this year. There's plenty of charities and other organizations collecting food, money, clothing, and whatever else to help those in need. Even things you wouldn't normally think of, like donating blood or bone marrow, could help someone in need. And for some, that would mean everything this holiday season.
Thanks again for listening! Many cheers and good times to all this Christmas.
