It’s Tuesday which means it’s time for Crossroads Comics!

This week we’re taking a look at the Webtoon, Muted. This is a comic that deals with the supernatural. In the heart of the bayou, a young witch from an influential family in New Orleans has reached her 21st birthday. On this day, she along with her sister, are expected to summon a winged demon and make a wish, a wish for a husband that will bring more influence, power, and riches for her family. But, the ritual goes awry, dark secrets about the witch’s past start to come to life. She begins to learn more about herself and her past, but in doing so, she threatens the very fabric of social hierarchy for witch society in the Bayou.
If you really like fantasy and magic, Muted is a great story for you. There’s several different types of magic present in the story, taking the form of different families in witch society. Each family’s magic has its own rules and structure, which is part of what makes our main character, Camille, so interesting. As a member of the Severin family, Camille has never been able to learn about the other magical families, and so as she explores the new world presented to her, we the audience are able to learn more about the society and Camille herself.
Camille is also a very interesting character on her own. Without going into too many spoilers, she’s had a very rough past filled with trauma inducing events. Even now she still has trouble processing the events and it impacts her magic as a result. What’s really great about Camille is that many of the characters don’t trust her right away. The Severin family is very distrusted in the magical community, and it shows when other characters interact with Camille at first. Some come to warm up to her eventually, but they don’t stay friendly despite everything either. If Camille bad mouths them or acts out of line, the other characters respond to it negatively. While this may seem like basic character interactions 101, it’s refreshing to have a character with a bit of a bad attitude actually not get away with everything for once.
Camille is by not the only interesting character though. There’s several others introduced that are equally interesting and show increased depth the further the story goes along. Muted does very well to make you invested in the characters, even side characters, so you’re always wanting to see what happens next week to week. In addition, part of the reason I wanted to spotlight this comic is due to its LGBT representation, as Camille is actually a lesbian. So since it’s Pride Month, why not kick it off by binging a comic centered on a lesbian with excellent worldbuilding, interesting characters, and a very complex and intricate story?
And while you’re at it, check out the rest of the comics that updated in the last week!
