The PI rambled on about rangers using the building. Alice tried to remain outwardly calm, one shaking hand hiding inside her bag and the other shaped into a fist. Every second brought her friends closer, she thought.
When he started talking about Aster, she paid more attention. It was true, her Pokemon were growing very quickly. But didn't this guy know what the group had been through? Maybe not... They had no choice but to get stronger! She didn't know what the Death Island tournaments were but they didn't sound good. Had he already sent Aster away? Alice ran through the possibilities in her head... she could challenge the PI to a proper battle or maybe launch a sneak attack. She could try to run... She could tackle him... She could scream and hope her friends were close enough... but no, that would only put them in danger. Alice had to weaken him before they arrived.
Before Alice could respond, the PI said, "Lets assume I know what you are going to do. The odds are not in your favor!" He released his Arbok from its Pokeball. Alice felt there was no choice but to fight, at least to buy more time. She scanned the battlefield casually, careful to avoid looking at the Arbok directly. Paprika was still nowhere in sight. Alice hoped that she was still nearby. Paprika hated the Ekans Alice had caught. Would she be scared of the Arbok and run off?
There was no time to worry. Alice grabbed the first Pokeball from her bag and released her Furret. The furry Pokemon stood by her protectively when it saw the snake they were facing. It clashed its claws together, warning the Arbok to stay away. Within seconds, the two had lunged for each other and claws and fangs danced in combat. It was hard for Alice to see in the dark. She made sure to pay attention to the PI, making sure he wasn't doing anything shifty while she was focused on the battle.

After the smoke cleared, Arbok had come out on top, but barely. Alice thanked Almond and returned her. She could see that the PI's Pokemon were stronger than her own. But they was fighting for Aster. Surely that would give them an edge.
Alice sent out Coin this time. The Persian stretched itself, meowing loudly before launching straight at the snake. It was over quickly, one Slash and the Arbok was down, but Coin had taken a slight scrape as well.

The PI countered with his own Persian. It roared as it entered battle, its white coat more visible against the grass than the Arbok had been. As the two cats launched at each other, Alice noticed the PI's Persian was much faster.

After a frenzy of biting and scratching, the PI's Persian came out victorious. Alice returned Coin before too much damage could be done. She looked around, but there was still no sign of her friends. She had told them which path to take, but she had come a fair way since then and they might not even notice this field in the dark. She supposed the sound of the battle might guide them when they got close. If she could last that long...
She released Fervor this time. The Primeape punched the air, locking onto the white cat immediately. Alice didn't even need to say anything before Fervor was upon the cat, punching and kicking with all her might. It had been too long since the monkey was allowed to let loose. The Persian went down quickly but Fervor kept punching and Alice was forced to return her in order to calm her down.

This time the PI sent out a Hypno. Alice shuddered. Hypno freaked her out but not as much as Drowzee did. After all, the memory that haunted her was of a Drowzee. Hypno lacked the sharply clawed hands and reaching snout that terrified her. She had faced worse today already. The Drowzee that had helped her earlier flashed into her mind. She hoped she had recovered from expending her energy to help Alice. Maybe if Alice had been kinder to it, it would be here now, to help...
Alice sent out Spore, knowing the Parasect would have a type advantage, even though the Hypno clearly had more battle experience. Spore entered the frey, claws clacking together. She Hypno was able to dodge a Stun Spore attack, but Spore landed an X-Scissor which was super effective. The Hypno countered with its Psychic power and Spore was flung backwards into the grass. The Parasect fainted, but Hypno had used too much of its energy on the attack. It was crouched over now, one more hit would do it...

Hoping she had calmed down, Alice sent out Fervor again. The Primeape looked at her opponent warily this time, feeling threatened by the Psychic Pokemon. With a bit of encouragement from Alice, however, she flew into battle. The Hypno managed to let out a small blast of psychic energy, but Fervor pushed through, knocking it out.

The PI sent out his last Pokemon. Alice looked down at Fervor, who had returned to her side, calmer than earlier now that she had released her pent up energy.
"Do your best," Alice said as the monkey went into attack mode. The opposing Zoroark exuded power. Alice knew that it was unlikely she could pull this off. She would need Paprika after all...
After a tough battle, Fervor fainted, but not without damaging the Zoroark. The fast dark fox had just been too strong. Alice recalled Fervor, placing the ball safely back in her bag.

The Zoroark puffed heavily. One more good attack looked like it could finish it.
And Alice still had her secret weapon...
"Looks like you won..." she called to the PI. She knew it was important to seem unworried and confident now. "Or have you? Your Zoroark won't take another hit. Return Aster now and I might let you go. Otherwise, maybe you'd like to make a little bet about whether your Zoroark can survive a Thunderbolt?"
As she finished speaking, a patch of grass to the left, behind the PI, lit up with brilliant sparks of electricity. Paprika was still out of sight in the tall grass, her attack the only thing visible. The gathering lightning was blinding in the darkness, sending everything else into shadow. A column of electricity shot into the sky, lighting up like a beacon in the night. She waited for the PI to make his move, Paprika poised to attack at her signal.
If she so wished, Alice could redirect the attack to the PI directly. Alice had never attacked a person before, but this was for Aster. She understood how Meg felt now. She knew she would do anything for her Pokemon. The loss of Aster had turned her into a furious mother Kangaskhan who would defend her baby at all cost. Was this how Meg felt about the whole world? If Alice made it out of here, she would make things right with Meg, she vowed.
