GCEA: How to Battle Kanto [Guide to Battling]

    GCEA KANTO: HOW TO BATTLE

    ---

Gotta Catch 'Em All has a battle system that can't be found elsewhere. There are no programs to calculate moves, stats, or paid refs here. Battles are determined by three factors; Type, Evolution, Current Points. Since battles come second to the story they are treated very causally. Below you will find the three factors that control the outcome of a battle.

    1. Points: The first thing you see in any battle are the Opponent's Pokemon's Current Point Level and Challenger's Pokemon's Current Point Level.
    2. Type: In GCEA two things will get you a type bonus. A normal type advantage and a natural immunity. Normal resistances do not apply. You'll find the type chart below.
    3. Evolution: In battle, any Pokemon who has evolved will get an advantage.

    BONUS SPREADSHEET

    1. All bonuses are applied to the OPPOSING POKEMON, and NEVER YOUR OWN, so naturally NEGATIVE BONUSES ARE GOOD and POSITIVE BONUSES ARE BAD.

    2. A type advantage is any advantage a Pokémon has in type. If you have an advantage, the opponent is levied NEGATIVE BONUSES, but if he has an advantage, the opponent is given POSITIVE BONUSES. Advantages are always -/+ 5, with ONE exception: 2 Pokémon who are naturally level 5 fighting each other have type bonuses of -/+2, and ONLY in that instance.

    3. If a Pokémon has evolved further than an opponent, it has an Evolution Bonus: The more evolved, the better. A final form Pokémon levies a bonus of -/+ 5 against any Pokémon that isn’t fully evolved; a Pokémon that is in its middle stage, if it has any (Dewott, Charmeleon, Metapod, ect) levies a bonus of -/+ 2 against Pokémon who haven’t evolved at all-but CAN evolve. Evolution bonuses are not counted if both Pokémon are equally evolved. Pokémon that do not have evolutions or devolutions at all (IE, Khangaskhan, Pinsir) are at their final form automatically. Mega Evolutions, for those that can use such a power, confer an additional -5 Evolutionary bonus unless the opponent is ALSO Mega Evolved.

    4. Legends are special -- instead of Evolutionary bonuses, they confer a -/+ 15 Legendary Bonus instead of an evolutionary bonus, which is absolutely flat, regardless of every situation possible except facing another Legendary Pokémon. And only other Legendary Pokémon. Mega-Evolved Legends or Primal Legends confer another -/+ 5 Legendary Bonus that is applied to non-Mega or Primal Legendary Pokémon as well (this means that non-Legends are at a -/+ 20 advantage).

REMEMBER: NEGATIVE IS GOOD, POSITIVE IS BAD.

One last thing! Bonuses are applied before the actual HP, so if a Lv. 65 Tyranitar faces down a Lv. 5 Rattata, the Evolutionary Bonus will KO the Ratatta and the Tyranitar will be at full HP-and this can go on indefinitely.

Bonuses are calculated from CURRENT points! That means that every time you put a bonus on a Pokemon, if its current points would drop to a different bonus level, apply the next bonus if it applies for the lower level. No Pokemon can go under 5 points. These bonus's do not kick in until after your first gym badge.

  2. #2
    Type Advantage

"Type Bonuses are the most basic of the bonuses. Using the list provided you can figure out when type will get a bonus. In GCEA, typing works a little different than normal. When figuring out a type bonus, you must first look at your opponent's type. If it has a dual type, both types must be taken into a account when figuring out bonuses. Let's hold off on that for now. Let's just start with the basics!"
    Spoiler:

Example 1 - One type bonus
    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

    "Now stay focused!"

    Diglett (Type: Ground)
    Points: 15

"For the sake of the battle, you will start with a Squirtle. Also, the points total will be exactly the same! Good luck!"

    Your partner!

    Squirtle (Type: Water)
    Points: 15

    Opponent: Diglett
    Attacker: Squirtle
    Opponent's Point Value: 15
    Attacker's Point Value: 15
    Bonuses: -5 (Type Advantage)
(You may ask why it's a -5. This is because you hold the advantage, so the Diglett's 15 points becomes
a 10 by subtracting 5. The bonus does not affect your total at all; only the opponent's total.)

    Opponent's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 5
Link to stats: [Link goes here]

"If you are wondering how this happened, well, it's simple. The -5 bonus got applied directly to my poor Diglett, dropping its total down to 10."
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example 2 - Two type bonus

"That was a great first round. Let's try again with a different pokémon! You can still keep your Squirtle, though, and it's all healed up again!"

    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

    "Pay attention!"

    Geodude (Type: Ground and Rock)
    Points: 20

"Now, let's see what happens when you battle a pokémon with two types! Good luck again! For the sake of easy bonuses, we're going to bump up the totals to 20 so that we stick with the basic (+/-)5 Bonus."

    Your partner!

    Squirtle (Type: Water)
    Points: 20

    Opponent: Geodude
    Attacker: Squirtle
    Opponent's Point Value:20
    Attacker's Point Value: 20
Bonuses: -10 (Type Advantages; -5 for Water over Rock, -5 for Water over Ground.)
    Opponent's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 10
    Link to stats: (Link)

"What was I thinking using a pokémon that had two disadvantages against you?! I'm going to have to try harder in my next battle!"

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example 3 - Type bonus that cancel each other out

"So, you are you starting to get the hang of it? Well, let's see how you handle a change up in typing. Now remember the type bonus depends on all the types involved!"

    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

    "Don't get ahead of yourself!"

    Lileep (Type: Rock and Grass)
    Points: 20

"We are going to keep the similar levels again to make it easy for the bonuses. This match will be a littler trickier though!"

    Your partner!

    Squirtle (Type: Water)
    Points: 20

    Opponent: Lileep
    Attacker: Squirtle
    Opponent's Point Value: 20
    Attacker's Point Value: 20
Bonuses: 0 (-5 Water over Rock, +5 Grass over Water)
    Opponent's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 0
Link to stats: [Link goes here]

"You may be wondering what just happened. Why did the bonuses not count? Remember when I said the bonuses Squirtle got against Diglett only count against the opponent? Well in this case, my Lileep would have gone down to 15 points after the first bonus was added. It would have than gone back up to 20 after the second bonus was added, because that was in its favor. So when applying bonuses, sometimes they can cancel each other out and then nobody gets a bonus, like a pokémon battle in any other game. Does that make sense?"

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example 4 - Mixed result from type bonus on both sides

"Okay, now let's mix it up a little more! In the next example, we'll see what happens when there are four types that all deal damage!"

    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

    "Let's even this out!"

    Aerodactyl (Type: Rock and Flying)
    Points: 20

"This time you'll have a little more power, but will it be enough?"

    Your Partner!

    Poliwrath (Type: Fighting and Water)
    Points: 20

    Opponent: Aerodactyl
    Attacker: Poliwrath
    Opponent's Point Value: 20
    Attacker's Point Value: 20
Bonuses: -5 (-5 Water over Rock, -5 Fighting over Rock, +5 Flying over Fighting)
    Opponent's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 0
Link to stats: [Link goes here]

"So what happened there? Well, unfortunately for me, my Aerodactyl had two weaknesses! I was able to stop some damage because of my Aerodactyl's flying bonus. Getting the hang of the type bonuses yet?"
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Example 5 - Type bonus/KO

"Now that you have the basic understanding of how typing works, let's try one last battle. In this battle, we are going to see what happens when you have a type bonus over a pokémon that's already weak."

    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

"This was poor type match up on my part! Again!"

    Geodude (Type: Ground and Rock)
    Points: 5

"In this example you are being given a gift: the perfect type matching for your pokémon!"

    Your partner!

    Lotad (Type Grass and Water)
    Points: 15

    Opponent: Geodude
    Attacker: Lotad
    Opponent's Point Value: 5
    Attacker's Point Value: 15
Bonuses: -20 (-5 Water over Rock /-5 Water over Ground /-5 Grass over Rock /-5 Grass over Ground)
    Full Battle Details:
(Your pokémon had a whopping 4 bonuses over this poor Geodude! However because of its level, the Geodude was knocked out by the first first Bonus! The combined total of the bonuses were 20!!! A level 20 Geodude would have been knocked out and your pokémon wouldn't have lost a single point.)
    Opponent's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 15
Link to stats: [Link goes here]

"Oh man I need to train some more!"

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Example 6 - Type No Effect Double Bonus

" So you got the basics of using type advantages to win a battle. But you are confused about the double bonus of a No Effect type match up. Why would there be a double bonus for or against a pokemon? Lets see what happens when you happens when you come up against pokemon whose typing shut you down."

    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

"This time we are ready for you. I got just the weapon!"

    Mudkip (Type: Ground and Water)
    Points: 15

"In this last example you are going to see how damaging double bonuses are!"

    Your partner!

    Pichu (Type:Electric)
    Points: 15

    Opponent: Mudkip
    Attacker: Pichu
    Opponent's Point Value: 15
    Attacker's Point Value: 15
    Bonuses: + 5 (+10 Ground over Electric/ - 5 Electric over Water)
    Full Battle Details:
(First questions first. Why the double bonus. The double bonus was given to show that in a battle an electric should not effect a ground pokemon at all. Since GCEA is a battling system based on type bonuses we needed a way to say while electric hurt water that grounds effect nulled it out. Which is why the double bonus is given to help reflect the real power of the none effective move. )
    Opponent's Remaining Points: 5
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 0
Link to stats: [Link goes here]

"Okay so you showed up to a gun fight with a knife? What happens if we reserves that and use the full double bonus against Brock?"

    Gym Leader Brock challenges you!

"Come back so soon? Didnt you get enough last time?"

    Diglett (Type: Ground )
    Points: 15

    Your partner!

    Spearow (Type:Flying/Normal)
    Points: 5

    Opponent: Diglett
    Attacker: Spearow
    Opponent's Point Value: 15
    Attacker's Point Value: 5
Bonuses: -10 (-10 Flying over Ground)
    Full Battle Details:
( Here is an example of how a type bonus can completely change the match. With just the no effect bonus in place you have enough to tie the battle!)
    Opponent's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 0
Link to stats: [Link goes here]

    Evolution Advantage

"This next section is going to focus on Evolution Bonuses. Now the first thing to know is that the evolution bonus is the bonus depends on what stage your pokemon is compared to that of your opponent. Please memorize the type evolution chart!"
    Spoiler:

Example 1 ( Basic Evolution bonus, 1 stage higher)
    Gym Leader Misty challenges you!

"This should be fun, good luck Trainer."

    Horsea (Type: Water)
    Points:15

"Your starter seems to have evolved! Wartortle should do well since it's a second stage pokemon. Please don't worry about Type Bonuses !"

    Your Partner!

    Wartortle (Type: Water)
    Points:15

    ........

    Opponent: Horsea
    Attacker: Wartortle
    Opponent's Point Value:15
    Attacker's Point Value: 15
    Bonuses: -5 (-5 Evolution Bonus)
    Opponents's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 5
    Link to stats:

"Good job trainer, you won that first battle. Wondering how you got that the upper hand? Well, you were using a Wartortle and because of its evolution, it got a bonus in its favor."

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example 2 ( Fully Evolved pokemon)

"With the new system in place. Final stage evolutions will be getting a boost. From this point further bepending on the pokemon you are battling you will either get a +10 against basic pokemon or a +5 for middle stage pokemon."

    Gym Leader Misty challenges you!

"Let's try this again! Spheal and Palpitoad, show 'em what you got!"

    Spheal (Type: Water/Ice)
    Points:15

    and

    Palpitoad (Type: Water/Ground)
    Points: 15

"That last battle was a little too easy, let's see how you do with more than one pokemon. In this battle, you will be using two different pokemon at different stages!"

    Your Partners!

    Raticate (Type: Normal)
    Points:15

    and

    Kecleon (Type: Normal)
    Points: 15

    ........

    Opponent: Spheal
    Attacker: Raticate
    Opponent's Point Value:15
    Attacker's Point Value: 15
    Bonuses: -10 (-10 Evolution Bonus)
    Opponents's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 10
    Link to stats:

    ........

    Opponent: Palpitoad
    Attacker: Kecleon
    Opponent's Point Value:15
    Attacker's Point Value: 15
    Bonuses: -5 (-5 Evolution Bonus)
    Opponents's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 5
    Link to stats:

"Do you see what happened? Raticates bonus was changed based on it opponent evolution stage. Does that seem complicated? If so always think back to the charmander line. Poor Charmander gets a -10 against fully evolve pokemon and Charmeleon gets a -5 against a fully evolved pokemon."

**Okay so what did we learn? Pokemon that do not evolve are considered fully evolved and they always get bonus over pokemon who are not final stage.**
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Example 3 ( Mega Evolution Bonus)

"Next up the brand new Mega Evolution Bonus style. If you are lucky enough to get your hand on a Mega Stone, be prepared for an almost Legendary Evolution Bonus!"

    Gym Leader Misty challenges you!

"The last couple of battles haven't gone my way, lets see if that changes this battle!"

    Horsea (Type: Water)
    Points:15

"I'm going to give my old friend Horsea a second chance to take you down. In this example, you will be using your now fully evolved Mega Blastoise. Having a pokemon that Mega Evolves give you access to a great bonus!"

    Your Partner!

    Mega Blastoise
    Points:51

    ........

    Opponent: Horsea
    Attacker: Mega Blastoise
    Opponent's Point Value:15
    Attacker's Point Value: 51
    Bonuses: -15 (-15 Mega Evolution Bonus )
    Opponents's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 51
    Link to stats:

"Awww, what happened! My poor Horsea got knocked out! Maybe the bonus wouldn't be so bad if I used an evolved pokemon. Hm, let me try again with a different pokemon."

    Gym Leader Misty challenges you!

    "Seadra, you've got this !"

    Seadra (Type: Water)
    Points:30

"In this example you will be battling at full health. Normally, your Pokemon wont regain energy during the same battle. Let's try it again with Mega Blastoise!"

    Your Partner!

    Mega Blastoise
    Points:51

    ........

    Opponent: Seadra
    Attacker: Blastoise
    Opponent's Point Value:30
    Attacker's Point Value: 51
Bonuses: -15 (-15 Mega Evolution Bonus)
    Opponents's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 36
    Link to stats:

"Now that worked out slightly better, but damn the bonus against Seadra was -15 like Horsea! I guess NFE pokemon are to weak to battle a Mega. I bet Kingdra will do better!"

    Gym Leader Misty challenges you!

    "Kingdra, time to get revenge!"

    Kingdra (Type: Water/Dragon)
    Points:45

"In this example you will be battling at full health again. Let's go with Mega Blastoise again!"

    Your Partner!

    Mega Blastoise
    Points:51

    ........

    Opponent: Kingdra
    Attacker: Mega Blastoise
    Opponent's Point Value:45
    Attacker's Point Value: 51
Bonuses: -10 (-10 Mega Evolution Bonus)
    Opponents's Remaining Points: 0
    Attacker's Remaining Points: 16
    Link to stats:

"So Mega Evolutions get a bonus of at least -10 even against fully evolved pokemon? That's crazy, I need a Mega Kingdra!"
