Odd Gender Ratios in Pokemon

Old Gender Ratios
Did you know that the Gothita line had a 25% chance of being male? No? Neither did I until I watched TheAuraGuardian’s “Pokemon with Odd Gender Ratios.”

There are certainly some Pokemon out there with odd gender ratios, and some of them don’t even fit the Pokemon. Look at Fennekin. It has an 87.5% chance of being male, and a 12.5% chance of being female. Despite it being more likely to be male, however, it has a feminine appearance. Of course, Fennekin has the excuse of being a starter Pokemon and all of the starters have the same gender ratio, but they still could have given Fennekin a more masculine, or gender neutral, appearance with it having a higher chance of being male.

Other Pokemon — like the Machop line, Gardevoir (and its Mega Evolution) and Mr. Mine — have a 50/50 chance of being male or female when they should probably be 100% male or female. The Machop line is one of the ones that should probably be 100% male. While there are female body builders out there, there’s no distinction between a male Machop and a female Machop, and the same applies to Machoke and Machamp. Gardevoir also looks more feminine than masculine, yet it has a 50/50 chance of being male or female. It looks like it’s wearing a dress, even more so in its Mega Evolution, yet it has a 50% chance of being male. I guess you could say Game Freak supports cross-dressing! There’s also Mr. Mime, who has the word mister in its name, yet it has a 50/50 chance of being male or female. Of course, that could have something to do with how there were no gender distinctions for Pokemon until the second generation of games, but still. They could have just made Mr. Mime 100% male to go with its name.

The video even touches on genderless Pokemon, mainly discussing those that should be genderless, like the Honedge line. The Honedge line has a 50/50 chance of being male or female, but they’re swords. They’re magical swords though, which is probably why they’re gendered.

What are your thoughts on the odd gender ratios in Pokemon? Are there some ratios that you wish were different?
