TCG Beat: Featured Card- Frozen City

Frozen City
This week we are going to take a look at one of the stadium cards release from Plasma Freeze. It may not be seeing play often but it doesn’t mean that it can’t be useful. So come along  as we stroll into Frozen City.

When Frozen City is in play, every time an energy from the hand is attached to a Pokemon then that Pokemon will take two damage counters. Team Plasma Pokemon are exempted from this effect. This card is simply another thing to help support the Team Plasma metagame that has recently developed to punish anybody who isn’t using Team Plasma based decks.

Which decks will not like Frozen City? PlasmaSteel and Blastoise-Keldeo are two examples of ones. If Frozen City is the active Stadium then a Colbalion EX will already have sixty damage on it by the time it is ready to charge in. That damage could easily be swept away using a well timed Max Potion and Shift Gear but that is sixty damage you do not want to take. Then the idea that Keldeo EX will be taking damage just for doing what Blastoise does best. This will make the opponent a bit unsure about raining down energy on their Keldeo if it is going to make it easier for a Team Plasma Pokemon to knock it out next turn.

What is stopping Frozen City from being a most wanted card? Virbank City Gym.

The combination of Hypnotoxic Laser and Virbank City Gym can be found in any deck that can fit three Hypnotoxic Lasers and two Virbank City Gym. The ability to do thirty damage by the end of the turn is useful and can make taking down EX Pokemon much easier. So why use Frozen City if it may not be as useful as Virbank City Gym? Using it as a counter-stadium in Plasma decks.

Plasma Decks already run Hypnotoxic Laser so they would likely have Virbank City Gym in play. The problem is that everybody else will be playing it as well. You may be able to do thirty damage to your opponent Pokemon by simply playing an item card but the option is also there for your opponent. Why play a stadium that your opponent can abuse as well when you can play one that will make it hard for them to get the knock outs? If you are playing against a nonPlasma deck then you can easily get rid of their Virbank City Gym and punish them for attaching energies on to their Pokemon. Either way, you are going to make the opponent scramble to replay a key card while you are playing in your prefer playground.

You will not find yourself in Frozen City often but it is still a card to try out and experiment with if you are planning to use a Plasma deck.
