Top 5 Pokemon Comics This Week – September 10

Kit's Black 2 Nuzlocke
Kit’s Black 2 Nuzlocke

I mean, who doesn’t like The Lion King?

Please note that the selection is based solely on my opinion. If you feel that a comic really amazed you this week, feel free to post about it in the comments!

Check out the Top 5 Comics after the break!

#1. Kit’s Black 2 Nuzlocke

I am an absolute fan of Kit’s Black 2 Nuzlocke. It is simply AMAZING.

Artist Kitfox has managed to create a Nuzlocke Comic that packs in a ridiculous amount of references. From Transformers to Scooby-Doo to Speed Racer to My Little Pony, Kit’s Black 2 Nuzlocke has laughs and jokes for everyone. And the references are indeed EVERYWHERE. You can’t go an update without laughing.

That being said, it is a Nuzlocke and that means there is a fair share of death and remorse. Loveable characters grow and die in front of your eyes. Between the laughter and tears, you cannot help but enjoy Kit’s zany adventures.

#2. Alterity

Alterity

Alterity is another Nuzlocke Comic featuring a Boy Girl Borl named Robin. In time, Robin begins a Pokemon journey by stealing a Pokemon from a neighbor named Brendan. The two become quick friends (because Brendan is gullible). And things only get better from there. Thankfully, the comic manages to take many of the fun Pokemon antics to the next level without becoming too ridiculous.

In this particular update, however, what touched me the most was not the antics (though Roxanne’s expressions are fantastic), but the serious and sad atmosphere at the end of what should be a triumphant scene. Yes, Roxanne lost and yes, Robin won. Yet, Roxanne also lost another friend and though she tries to hide her pain in anger, she clearly is hurting inside. And, of course, she asks the deeper question, which clinches Alterity as one of this week’s top comics: If the Pokemon League sanctions matches that allow the use of deadly force, what does that say about Pokemon trainers?

#3. Pokemon: Rising Shadows

Pokemon: Rising Shadows

When she began the comic, Nekomata-chan claimed that “Drawing Pokemon isn’t my forte”. I personally think she’s being a little too hard on herself. Her comic, even in the beginning, features high-quality artwork that draws you in and a story that leaves you wanting more.

Part of the appeal of Pokemon: Rising Shadows, are the loveable and memorable characters. Mist is a crazy hyper Mismagius who you just can’t help but love (and smile at). Talon is, of course, her foil being much more logical and a bit cranky. The true mystery, though, surrounds a wounded Flareon who meets these two rescuers and discovers that she… cannot remember who she is.

#4. Mokepon

Mokepon

We return to Mokepon and the adventures of Atticus, our favorite chains-smoking, clueless, angsty Pokemon hero! Honestly though, Atticus is someone most of us probably wouldn’t get along with given his desire to isolate himself from others. Still, one can only admire his… um… mmm… hmm… good… drawing skills.

Ah well, the important thing is that we enjoy the story, right!? And this update is no different, playing on the terrors that have plagued us all at some point: Zubats. Massive swarms of Zubats. I bet we’ve knocked out more Zubats than any other species of Pokemon. That’s just how bad they are. And Atticus is going to discover that fun fact very, very soon.

#5. Desu’s Emerald Nuzlocke

Desu's Emerald Nuzlocke

“Welcome to the World of Pokemon. The Land of Unpredictable Plots.” ~Prologue

If that doesn’t grab your attention, nothing will. Desu’s Emerald Nuzlocke follows the adventures of a girl who happens to be named Desu. She moves to a new town and while unpacking, discovers a strange clock that so happens to be… a Jirachi. She also happens to make a rather… unusual wish. I won’t spoil what she wishes for, but its effects reverberate throughout the entire story.

I have to say that I love this particular update, even if it’s an Extra Page. You have two hilarious mini-stories. One about an apology gone wrong and the other about… eyes. Trust me, it’s funnier than it sounds. Really.
