Crossroads Comics #141-Lucky’s Travels

It’s Tuesday (and my birthday) which means it’s time for Crossroads Comics!

This week on Crossroads Comics, since it’s my birthday, I figured we’d take a look at one of the comics that I work on, Lucky’s Travels. And yes this will be an article entirely dedicated to complimenting myself, deal with it. Lucky’s Travels is a comic that I’ve been working on in various forms for almost a decade now and it’s finally reached a form that I’m proud of in its latest iteration.

So what is Lucky’s Travels? Well it’s a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon gijinka comic! These were all the rage back in the day when I was first inspired to do this, and while you don’t see them as much nowadays, it’s still something I wear as a bit of a badge of honor. It follows Lucky and Isaiah, shiny eevee and bayleef gijinkas respectively. They’re a couple of explorers who work to categorize dungeons and rescue clients where needed. However, problems have started to arise as dungeons seem to be changing, going against prior established classifications and causing problems for guild workers who navigate them. Said to be a sign of the apocalypse, Lucky and his friends are determined to figure out how all the pieces are connected and stop whatever it is that is terrorizing Phaydin. But what they uncover is a story and a universe far greater than they could have ever imagined.

Lucky’s Travels is still a fairly fledgling comic, not even completed its first chapter yet. The art style is a tad inconsistent due to my working on pages whenever I can so some of the oldest pages are actually more than two years old at this point. But you can see rapid improvement throughout these early pages as a stylistic consistency is somewhat reached by the most recent pages. Due to the fact that this comic is so early on though, there isn’t too much to talk about without delving into spoilers. But, there are two things that I can highlight while we’re here about what makes Lucky’s Travels unique from other comics.

First, Lucky’s Travels places a very large emphasis on the nature of Mystery Dungeons. Other PMD comics touch on them for worldbuilding purposes but for the most part dungeons are more of a backdrop than anything else. That’s why I’ve strived to make Lucky’s Travels different. We’ve seen glimpses of it so far, but dungeons in Lucky’s Travels can fall into one of five categories: Pestilence, Famine, War, Death, and Conquest. Each dungeon comes with their own hazards and levels of lethality. This classification system acts as one of the main plot points in the story and it’s something that I think, once we delve into it more, will really make Lucky’s Travels one of the more unique stories out there.

Secondly, Lucky’s Travels in itself is a fairly well known story due to its cameo history. Since 2013, the titular characters, Lucky and Isaiah, have been seen in cameos all over the place. From PMD comics to ask blogs to nuzlockes, these boys appear in just about everything. It’s become a bit of a “Where’s Waldo” game for fans that are aware of the joke and has even garnered the duo someone fan recognition. All in all it’s a fun little game that lots of folks participate in, and you can see all the most recent cameos here.

In addition, here’s a few of my favorites:
