View Full Version : But it's too hard!

I'm pretty sure we all have things we're just not good at, no matter how much we try. So what's the hardest thing you find when it comes to art?
I just suck at realistic anatomy. xD I mean I'm slowly getting better, but anatomy especially takes a loooooooot of time and effort to perfect. And then trying to figure out how certain types of clothing flows over different forms (and drawing the creases and such) is just really painstaking at times. ;n; But the best thing I can do is find a tonne of references and practice drawing them out until it's memorised.

I usually have to do extensive research / utilize a bunch of references to get a pose right. ****, I'm horrible at conceptualizing poses, backgrounds, and the like, and am **** at having multiple characters interact with each other (in a physically close way). I constantly **** my anatomy up, and also am unfamiliar with how a lot of things work. Honestly a lot of the time I feel like a ****ing fraud. I do all the **** I do but I don't even know or try to know all these other things. I'm just. Horrible. The problem is, I don't show my weaknesses to others and instead focus on my strong points. I hate that about me.

I really struggle with coming up with new ideas in general, because I can't really visualise stuff very well. Pretty much everything I do is just an alteration to something I've already seen; most of my Pokemon drawings were actually drawings of real-life animals first! It's why I like doing revamps so much
Also, I'm painfully clumsy. This means my line art always goes wrong, and I've spilt paint/ink/water/turpentine on finished pieces so many times it's not funny :|

Hardest part? The part where you actually make a picture. :P
Seriously, I'd say shading. I have a hard time visualising things in 3d, so I can never tell where the light and shadows should go. Even now I just guess at it 90% of the time.

Any kind of anatomy from the head down! I'm hopeless! Also I struggle with clothing folds and such. They never seem to look quite right.

This. In fact, I stopped doing that "faded" style of shading, because it just never looked right.
I'm also horrible at drawing bird talons/feet. When you think about how birds have a nice, fluffy, feathery body, it makes you wonder why they have such strange, reptilian feet. Starmie is also right, hands can be tough at times.

I'm really bad at shading. It's not really trying to visualize where the light is coming from, it's more that by the time I've gotten to the shading I get really impatient and just want to be done with the art already so I end up skipping it a lot. And the way that I do shading is kind of hard, which doesn't make me like it any more...

Legs and full-body poses are what kill me. I'll draw expressions all day every day but when it comes to drawing people in any view except waist-up, it gets pretty rough.

Oh, I totally agree that dynamic poses can go die in a hole. XD I suck at that, too. And when I try, my dynamic poses look so static!

Colouring/shading and non-shaky lineart. xD I solve both by making everything look chalky. Hoorah!
Anatomy is definitely hard. o_O I can't draw people very well even cartoonishly. xD Also PEOPLE EYES! :(

I honestly can't draw people at all. I tend to do mostly nature and landscapes and stuff. I'm not great at animals, but certain animals I can draw decent, and I'm not terrible at them. It's humans that I suck at. I've been practicing drawing faces a lot recently, but I just haven't gotten a lot better.

Well until just a few years ago, I couldn't draw people very well, either. xD I actually find eyes a lot easier than say, noses or mouths. Realistically, that is. I am so terrible at mouths. ;n; I don't know how people do it.

I can draw people quite well if I'm doing observational, realistic drawings, but not in cartoon styles. For example, my entire A Level project was realistic portraits and-self portraits, but I can't draw a Pokemon/anime version of myself :| darn you, fine art training

Isn't that usually the opposite of what usually happens? xD A lot of people find realism harder. I actually think it's easier, since the objects are right there in front of you. Cartoon styles are very subjective.
