View Full Version : Gamer Rage
Hello. My name is Fate and I'm a gamer rageaholic. I can't live without gamer rageahol.
I may be a happy person generally, but video games can bring out a terrible side of me. It seems to be a selective thing, though. I'm fine if I fail something over and over. I'll just keep trying. But if some specific monster or something is causing me to die repeatedly, I'll suddenly get really frustrated. And then the cursing-at-the-screen phase kicks in. And then I stop having much fun, but I'll keep playing, anyway.
Only happens when I'm alone, though. I don't seem to get angry at all when someone else is there.
One time while playing Tales of Graces f, there was this enemy that kept killing me in battle, and whenever I'd use a Life Bottle to bring back a character, it would specifically target that character and kill him again. It did this over and over and finally I got so frustrated I threw my controller at the wall. And it kinda, uh, broke. Since then I've been real good at restraining myself from getting too angry to avoid doing something stupid. xD
Anyway, at least I admit it. Now who's gonna come forward and admit it, too? We won't judge.

I'm similar, but I prefer to rage quit and I don't play many games. The big offender for me is Team Fortress 2 and Spies. I'm an Engineer main, and if you know anything about the game you know that Spies are the only people that can come in solo and cripple an engineer or a nest of Engineers. Needless to say, I have a habit of rage quitting a server if a Spy is harassing me. Especially if I can't get anything built or if they're specifically targeting me over the rest of the Engie nest.

When I used to play Call of Duty I broke all kinds of things. Games, controllers, basically whatever was in reaching distance. It got so bad that I had to start taking a 5 minute break between matches :|
That was when I was an angry 14 year old though, I don't really play video games anymore (except Pokemon, obviously!).

the only game to ever make me really Angry is league of legends, but im not the sort of person who rages at others or breaks things or anything like that, i tend to internalize it more than anything... except this one time i was so angry, so worked up and mad, that i took a break to go outside and shovel snow for a while to get out my energy, worked like a charm :p

I'm not so much of a rage quitter, but I will have times when I just quit with a "eh, today's just not my day" feeling, especially if it's hopeless for the team I'm on anyway. I also don't cuss at the screen, but will have moments when I say "come on!" or "that's a load of crap" when I get killed. Battlefield 4 is pretty notorious for this. And those are just the things I say. In my mind, during the first few initial seconds of getting killed, I'm wishing that person to go get terminal cancer or go die in a fire, only to think "no, no, I wouldn't wish that on anyone." And there are times where after getting knifed in the back (generally regarded as a humiliation kill), I wish I had a genie that whoever did that would have their... *ahem* privates melt off in a boiling puddle of goo. I never actually say these things and I quickly dismiss them in my head, but for those first few seconds of intense frustration, they're there, even though I would never truly wish those kinds of things on anyone.
As Lord knows and is my witness, I've totally train-wrecked other people's plans and have done plenty of the same thing to them, so yeah, it's just the nature of the beast when gaming in multiplayer scenarios. Although I do wonder how many times I've gotten other people to cuss or smash things as a result of what I've done. :P

As someone who has played Engineer but mostly mains Sniper, I can totally relate. Spy is honestly my worst and least favorite class and despite watching plenty of YouTube to learn better ways to play the class, nothing I do really seems to work all that well.

Not sure if you specifically played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, but that was the one that had the Tactical Nukes that blew up everything, killed everyone, and automatically allowed your team to win regardless of whether they were losing or what the winning conditions were. If one of those was in the process of going off, I often just quit and it got even worse and resulted in a lot of angry people if it suddenly resulted in a host migration. There was honestly no point in hanging around once those fired off, and very often the person who did it had already just done a massive blow to your team with a chopper gunner or AC-130, and chances were pretty good you had already died at least a few times to their nonsense. Forcing them to wait through a host migration was often a satisfying way of getting back at them, but... it's not the most honorable thing to do. :P
I also agree that a lot of Call of Duty's ultimate kill streak rewards (dogs, nuke) are insane and stupidly unrealistic and are an absolute pain to be faced with, but using them yourself is a gleeful guilty pleasure. Most of the time I try to be a good sport about these things, but there are moments when I've had it and just pull the plug before it gets any worse.
I haven't played a CoD game since the original Black Ops (save for a Black Op II free weekend that I barely used), so I don't know if they've gotten better or worse regarding these things. I'd still say it's pretty unlikely I'd return to that franchise, though, since I've met a lot of... rather not-so-pleasant individuals on it.

Yeah I loved MW2 and that's the only I'm mainly talking about; I got through three or four copies of it because I kept smashing them :x
The AC-130s/Nukes were really annoying. I never got one (didn't see the point, and my 25 kill streaks were only when it wasn't equipped) and I used to quit when they happened too. The thing that made me angriest was the connection, because a lot of people on my friends list were Americans so it's always put me in US servers and I'd have one bar the entire game!!
I stopped playing after Black Ops as well. To be honest I think I got bored of it because it gets stale after several years of solidly playing, it's very repetitive. I used to do competitive in COD4/MW2 and I guess it burned me out. My boyfriend plays it still and I sometimes watch. He enjoys it but they've implemented weird movement systems and it's a bit too fast paced for me now. Yeah, the main demographic seems to be 10 year olds who find certain offensive words absolutely hilarious :|

There were days when I'd spend the whole round just trying to be as much of a killjoy as possible and equip the Stinger to blow up everything in the sky. Really, in MW2, things got so out of hand with killstreaks. If there wasn't someone on your side to counter them, they would quickly wreck your entire team, and very often all my teammates were too lazy or didn't care to address them, so I took it upon myself to do it. And that often resulted in a lot of me getting killed in the process.
Also, as someone that managed to get the nuke three times, let me tell you, it makes your heart race. While they're annoying to get hit by, the feeling of unleashing one yourself is incredible. It makes it easy to have a love/hate relationship with them. I still feel CoD4 was the best, since there wasn't as much emphasis on killstreaks, things felt reasonable and balanced with it, and it ran pretty well and just seemed like the most fun I've had with the franchise. I also LOVED the Bloc map.
Also, I forgot, I totally did play Call of Duty: Ghosts for a short while. It definitely feels like they toned down the killstreaks in that, but after a while, people just completely stopped playing Ghosts and almost all of the game modes were completely vacant. I quickly grew tired of it and then moved onto Battlefield 4, which is incredibly epic and far superior in my opinion. I have 771 hours clocked in BF4, which probably borderlines insanity, but there are very few first person shooter games I have enjoyed more. It's fast, fun, furious, and feels like a nonstop action movie, but it does have a lot of frustrating moments/people.

I can't play Spy at all, but I have found one way to counter them, but they typically only make the mistake of falling for it once. I usually play CtF, so I put a tele exit under our intel and point a sentry at it. If a spy is uncloaked and uses it, he's immediately killed.

Heh heh, I like that. >:3
I usually play CtF as well, mostly Doublecross, although I like control points as well.

I do tend to get mad at games if the CPU is being unfair or the boss is harder than I thought. Bravely Default was a primary offender--the red mage took me six months to fight on EASY mode!

Slightly related: on my previous computers whenever they would get old and slow down and lag, I used to get really, REALLY pissed. We ALSO had slow internet! :D So when something wouldn't load, I would bang the hell out of my desk.
That's the only thing I get physical about, though. Most of the time I don't get too dedicated when playing games, so I'll either quit and try again later or just keep trying. I've not played a game as of late that's frustrated me to my core, which is both good and bad. :P
But yeah, I can definitely relate! Especially to the "not having fun anymore but still trying because I want to beat this so bad" bit. TOO MANY TIMES.

We welcome rage of any kind!
I had a somewhat similar experience with an old phone of mine. It was starting to not work and would freeze over and over. And every time it did, I had to open up the cover, pull out the battery, and turn my phone back on. Did this for months. And sometimes it would happen so constantly I'd get mad to the point where I'd punch the phone. It was alrrady broken so it didn't get any worse. xP

Oh geez. Phone problems! Again, I can relate so well because I went through 3 HTC phones when I first started getting into smartphones. One was REALLY bad because at least twice a day it would completely freeze up and I'd have to do the same thing: take the battery out and restart it. Thank god it even HAD a removable battery, as that's no longer a thing. >_> Like, why the hell are they getting rid of removable batteries anyway? That's so stupid.

Our internet has a habit of randomly turning itself off half way through using it. It's normally when we're streaming video or playing online games, so it's probably a bandwidth issue. My boyfriend gets really angry when it happens because he gets kicked from games, although it doesn't irritate me that much. I just roll my eyes and do something else for a bit, especially at the moment when I'm only streaming lectures for my exams!!

Oh my god, I used to get such bad rage in games. I literally used to get so mad, there were multiple times I slammed my fist into my leg so hard I gave myself a bruise. Now I still get angry at games sometimes, but I've kinda calmed down a bit. The only time I get really angry now is when I'm doing bad but I know I should be doing better. Like, everything seems to be in my favor but I somehow manage to screw it up and lose anyway.

I don't really get angry at games. I never really play multiplayer/tense games though. xD If I get stuck somewhere and can't get past a boss or whatever, I just stop playing and come back to it later if I feel like it. My brother and I like to yell at our players when we play the NBA games, but it's really just for fun.

Depends on the game but I tend to rage more in puzzle oriented games than anything else (looking at you Ocarina of Time). Currently though, I'm raging at Pokemon Rumble World because it's becoming difficult to capture new pokemon and I finally got access to shaymin and now I must acquire a Shaymin, both forms, and RAAAAHAHAHAHAHHAH!!

Often, when playing any video game, I get into rages when something bad happens to me, especially if I'm trying to get through a level or battle and the same thing I'm trying over and over doesn't work for me. At times, it's gotten bad enough to the point where I want to take an axe or hammer and destroy my game system(s)!

THIS. On one of my older phones, I used to be able to swap out the default battery for a fresh one, which was really good when I didn't have a charger and the first battery died out (which happens a heck of a lot as we all know). Nope, not anymore.
As for gamer rage, I've never gotten to the point of damaging hardware. I think the most I've ever done was just angrily push the Power button and go do something else. And if a game got really bad, I would just cheat. I haven't ever cheated with an online game to the detriment of other players (I did use a Diablo II map hack once, but that actually helps considering everyone is on the same team). But in terms of older games, I would use Game Genie/Shark to mess with the game and kill the difficulty. Or I'd use cheat codes.

There's not really any game in specific that infuriates me. Usually, when it's just something I can't do, I get really mad at the game. I used to be TERRIBLE with anger issues, so I'd always throw controllers around and scream. Sometimes it gets to that, but not very often. Nowadays I usually just grab a pillow and scream into it. Seems odd, but it's actually kind of effective.
