Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Crossroads
Rules, Guidelines, About, and A&A
So, what exactly is the PMD Crossroads? It's a Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Comic project for the art community of PXR to work together. Here's how it works:
Each person takes turns making the comic pages. There will be no script, no plotting, etc. So whoever is next in line continues the story however they see fit using whatever previous authors/artists had left for them. This obviously won't produce any extraordinary stories, but it'll be a fun way to test your imagination and story telling!
Of course, there's going to be some rules to prevent this from descending into total chaos and stupidity. While we want to have fun and all, we also want to try to create a fun and engaging story. Any and all participants must abide by these rules and guidelines.
Deadlines / Comic Pages
- All participants/artists will be allowed 2 weeks to complete a comic page. Pages can be black white, rough, clean, whatever. We're not looking for perfection- just to keep the story moving!
- If for some reason you'll be too busy when your turn comes around, simply state so and pass your turn off to the next person. You may request to be moved to the end of the current rotation. Please communicate this ASAP so we can keep going!
- If you start a page (thumbnails/sketches/etc.) and are unable to finish in the time frame, you may post that and let the next person in line finish it up! Collaborating just for the fun of it is acceptable too so long as pages are done in time.
- For consistency sake, all pages should be uploaded at 800x1200px. You can work at a higher resolution, just be sure that the final matches that of the rest of the pages.
-Please use the font Back Issue (http://www.blambot.com/font_backissues.shtml) which can be downloaded from this link for free.
- Do not be afraid to join the rotation because of your art/writing skill level! This project is meant to encourage people to draw/write and collaborate on a fun project- not as a test of skill. It'll help you practice and learn some new tricks! All skill levels welcomed!
- If a page blatantly breaks any of these rules, I have the right to reject the page and the next person in the rotation may do their part.
- If a participant of the comic feels that the person previous in the rotation has written them into a corner, broken some rules, or has any valid complaint about the page in question, they may request that the page prior be rejected. In this case, the participants will discuss if the complaint is valid and whether or not to keep the page or not. Hopefully we don't have any issues like this, but in case we do, it's up to the community to decide. This is to help keep the story going in a natural progression.
- Repeated failure to break rules will result being banned from PMD Crossroads.
Characters
- When writing for a character, please keep them true to their personality. No sudden personality shifts.
- While adding in new characters can be fun, please don't add in new characters for the sake of adding in new characters. In the earlier stages of the comic, we'll be more lenient about this. However, as we go on, I request that anyone who wishes to add a new character ask permission before doing so. Otherwise we may end up with far too many characters.
- The exemption to the above is for crowd scenes. If you need random characters to toss into the background, fine. Go for it! Try to reuse previous background characters when it makes sense though!
- Killing off main characters is forbidden without permission. Death should be used purely when it will be beneficial to the plot or character development for others. Never for shock value.
Story and World
- While there won't be any plot planning whatsoever, we do want to aim for a serious story. Not serious as in 'dark'- but as in, not sheer stupidity. We want to have a plot- just... no planning. Consider this an exercise in story telling! You can leave possible hints, clues, foreshadowing, etc. That's encouraged. It'll be fun to see what direction other writers/artists take these things in.
- While there is no set plot, as we continue through the comic, we'll start creating 'world rules' that stem from the worldbuilding done in the comic. These rules will help keep consistency in the world. For example, Pokemon may only learn x number of moves, or must stick to their official movesets. Things like that.
- The inclusion of legendary Pokemon for plot purposes is going to be expected at some point. But please do try to be reasonable about when to introduce them. Don't just throw them in for the sake of 'LOOK, A KYOGRE!' - I'd advise permission be gained prior to introducing a legendary.
Before We Start!
- We will actually start some of the world-building before the comic starts! The writers will create a basic groundwork for the rules of our world. Do team badges teleport them out if they're KO'd, or do they die? Are there guilds, or individual teams? These kind of things! No plot allowed though! These things are subject to change as the story goes and new ideas are formed!
- We're going to have a contest to determine what species our main character will be. That and some of their personality traits! Check the contest thread for more information!
Sign-Up!
- Want to join the rotation of people making the comic pages? Post in this thread and I'll add you to this. You don't need to sign up to help with world-building or other tasks- just the comic pages! Sign-ups are open at all times! New entries will be added to the end of the current rotation!

You can sign up and if you're still busy when your turn comes around, just say so and we'll skip your turn. Maybe by the time we get around to you again, you'll have time! And we're always welcome to section-specific lurkers. (I'm one 90% of the time).

I recommend reading the entire guidelines post, but to sum up some things:
- You continue the story from where the last page left off.
- We have a thread for designing the main character. While the introduction of new characters is ALLOWED, we discourage doing so except as absolutely needed to progress the plot. We want to try and make a coherent story- not random nonsense.
*sigh* Fiiine but if the art is awful don't blame me. I was planning to work on the worldbuilding stuff anyway I just haven't looked at everything yet because I've been traveling.

Hmm, forgive me if I missed a detail about this, but as far as I checked, I didn't see any details about this and it kind of came up in the worldbuilding thread.
What kind of situation will we have regarding mature content such as blood and gore, swearing, and sexual content?
Knowing well from nature, one animal eating another is a very bloody and gory mess and when it comes to Pokémon, I could imagine the same kind of situation could arise. And that's just one particular example aside from all the other ways a Pokémon could potentially die a grizzly death, especially if they're going on dangerous missions and adventures. Thing is, if that happens in the comic, it would have to be depicted. I agree that it shouldn't be overdone with guts and severed heads flying all over the place, but the characters coming across a half-eaten corpse, bleeding from injuries, or witnessing the death of another character would add to the threat and dangers that they're facing. My thing is if it would be shown in a nature show, it's possible to depict in the comic. But that's mainly my opinion.
As far as swearing goes, I generally think whatever doesn't get ***-ed out by the swear filter on the forum is fair game, but I'm not sure how other people feel about that.
Lastly, as far as sexual themes go, I'm perfectly fine with romance and relationships, but I'm not crazy about the idea of seeing two Pokémon making out. That's a little too much into dark territory. But characters implying it by saying things such as "they've been seeing each other" and "we slept together" basically makes it obvious what's going on.
How do other people feel about this, though? I figured this would be good to clarify before anything gets started.

I'd love to participate in this, but I'm not skilled in the slightest at drawing anything. We wouldn't be able to make out much from it. I can hear it now though, trying is the best way to improve, right? That's the thing sadly. I'd have to have a lot of time set aside even if it's just for one page. That or I could try and make it super silly
That is what we are going for in this right? Just one page at a time?
Neo Emolga swearing wise I'm not too against seeing that. I'm used to that kind of thing. If it's used then it's okay. I've seen some fanfic stuff use it. It all depends on the situation. As long as it's not overly used or used every other sentence.
Honestly? I used to think sexual themes in it wouldn't work well either. I'm not entirely for it, but I'm not completely against it either. Depending on how it's shown, it could work. Just don't go too far into the dark territory. Or even further than that in this comic I'd say.

Oh just sign up and try! I'm sure you can at least doodle and it's a good platform to use to improve your skills and get better. Practice, watch tutorials (your Pika pair Gemma has a good video for you!), and practice some more. I have seen serious improvement in my own drawing skills, so I know you can do it.
As for the swearing, true, but I'm trying to keep in mind forum rules for this one. I think we could still easily express anger, shock, and feelings of hate without swearing, though.
And yeah, I think it's pretty easy to avoid dark territory with the sexual themes. There's a good reason why I avoid looking at hentai. Best to not go there.

Thoughts on swearing/sexual themes are below as part of my response to Neo.

As far as swearing goes, I generally think whatever doesn't get ***-ed out by the swear filter on the forum is fair game, but I'm not sure how other people feel about that. However, I think it's fair to avoid excessive swearing. Swearing for the sake of swearing shouldn't be tolerated. If it fits the scene- fine! Excessive swearing sometimes gives the feel that a writer is trying too hard to be 'mature' or 'edgy' (I hate that word, but it's the first thing that comes to mind.)
Lastly, as far as sexual themes go, I'm perfectly fine with romance and relationships, but I'm not crazy about the idea of seeing two Pokémon making out. That's a little too much into dark territory. Regarding rules on blood, gore, and explicit scenes... Blood -will- be allowed, but not in graphic detail. If we choose to have carnivorous Pokemon, artists would be encouraged to depict such a thing in a way that isn't graphic. For example, carrying a dead body with some blood around the muzzle/on the body is fine. No guts and heads rolling around. If you think it's something you'd see in a rated R movie, then it's probably too graphic. That said, you can chop off heads off panel or imply in ways that aren't graphic. That's perfectly fine. I did imply a charactrer getting ripped to shreds in PRS recently- in fact, I've had quite a few bits of violence here and there. I'll post them- I think this level of blood should be acceptable.

As for language- I say that 'crap' and 'damn' are perfectly fine. If you can get it through the PXR filter, then it's probably fine. Also try to avoid excessive swearing. Swearing for the sake of swearing should be discouraged. I know one comic that has so much swearing that it feels like that writer is trying TOO hard to be 'dark', 'mature', 'edgy' and it really takes me out of the story.
Lastly- romance and sexual themes. I've gotten quite a few people come to be expressing concerns over this. Some of the people who have signed up are not entirely comfortable with heavy shipping- so I think it would be fair to keep sexual themes out of this. Having crushes and couples is fine, but please keep it innocent romance- like you'd see in cartoons. It'd be preferable if shipping not be a main focus of the story or at the very least not pushed too strongly as a plot point since it may discourage some people from participating. As I'm one of those people who doesn't particularly like writing shipping, I don't have an example from PRS for this... I'll dig through a few Pokemon comics and see if I can find examples of what I would think is acceptable vs going too far.
Note: This is all my suggestion based on concerns people have communicated. These rules are not yet set in stone, so please feel free to offer feedback! I want to encourage a mature story that is still appropriate to all ages. (By mature, I don't mean mature content- I mean a story with a serious story that may or may not have some darker plot lines). By no means, however, do I want to see any of the participants to feel uncomfortable with writing scenes because of gore, shipping, etc. This is a suggestion we DEFINITELY need to have.

I feel if we are going to determine this, we need a target audience. For example, if we want this comic so that a 16-year-old can read it, or an 8-year-old could read, then we need to set the theme appropiately. If our target audience is an 8-year-old, we probably wouldn't be showing blood pooling, but superficial wounds are okay. Whereas with a 16-year-old target audience, one could up the ante a little bit with lopped off limbs or something.
But I'm personally a fragile soul. I'm all for reduction of the more mature themes, as I'm uncomfortable drawing them. I even told somebody I wouldn't draw kissing. I wanted this comic to be fun more than edgy, a read that would lift your spirits in the end. Like, something I would show to my posterity if this turns out great.

I'll add my two cents on the topics of violence, sexual themes and profanity. In my own PMD story, all are present, none of these topics bother me on their own. What does bother me is when they are used simple for the sake of having them. If something makes someone uncomfortable it's not necessarily a bad thing as long as it is adding something to the overall story. Unfortunately these themes tend to get a bit out of hand so keeping them to a restricted minimum is probably best for all.

Nekomata hmm, true. I'd be all for helping brainstorm some things or dialogue. Since that could be pretty tough. Hey, even if it's something funny and witty that'd be good. Buuuut I forgive one day I'd create something anyway

Very good point! I hadn't even thought of that, haha. I think going for a teenage audience would make more sense, as I feel as if that's the demographic who would go looking for pokemon comics to read anyway. I think maybe 13+ would be good. 13 year olds won't care if there's "crap" and "damn" and some blood in there. xD We could always make it 15 and up to be safe.

I agree with you! If it's just chucked in there willy nilly, it's not really worth having it in there at all. I think we should stray from anything you won't see in a cartoon.

I'm fine with what everyone's said regarding violence.
Shipping...eh, I'd honestly prefer there was none in it, but if it's minor stuff (and I can draw pages without it as I don't really like romance), I don't mind.

Try it, we're not judging anyone with this. It's mainly for fun and as a platform to create and improve. I haven't really made comics since I was a kid, and my art back then was purely stick figures and stuff like that, so it should be interesting to see how I deal with this. XD

YAAAAAY! You wouldn't have to make it detailed. :] I don't plan to make mine very detailed. Yeah, maybe we could even do a process where we pass around one page if someone doesn't have time or thinks someone else can do it better!

Hey Liokora!
Like Xanthe, I don't think I'd use my usual art methods. I would definitely go with something quicker and less time-consuming, such as doing a single sketch and then a final linework on top of that to save time since there's going to be several panels worth of stuff to do.
But yeah, I'm excited to see whatever you're able to whip up for this. :3

I checked it out! Gallagher is quite awesome!
Despite the mention that you're unfamiliar with PMD games, he's totally fine and would totally fit in any PMD setting. But if you want a quick, five minute quick jump into what the whole PMD setting is like, this will give you a really good idea of the kinds of things to expect (Based on Gates to Infinity):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpqvPejzQL4
So if you want to jump into doing parts of the comic and join in on the artist rotation, this should really be all that you need. And if you have any questions about PMD stuff, I'd gladly answer that stuff having played through pretty much every PMD game since the beginning. Basically, there's no humans, Pokémon have built their own towns, societies, and civilizations, and usually there's some kind of world crisis in the mix and the protagonist, once a human but now Pokémon, has to not only figure out why they were transformed, but they also need to discover what they can do to stop a cataclysmic disaster from taking place.
Since a lot of the plot and background we're doing for this is totally on the fly and impromptu, you don't even need to worry about what happened in previous PMD games or that stuff.

Are all the pokemon people?
Most of the characters involved in these games are natural Pokémon that have always lived in these Pokémon-only worlds. The protagonist in these games is a human that has become a Pokémon after being taken to these worlds. However, in some cases, there are a few other humans that have become Pokémon for various reasons:
PMD Rescue Team Red/Blue
Gengar turns out to be a human that has become a Pokémon as a result of the Ninetales curse.
PMD Gates to Infinity
As it turns out, you're not the only human that has become a Pokémon to save the world from the Bittercold that Kyurem is trying to protect. You eventually discover Kyurem has been defeating these other hidden humans and soon enough, you're all that left and all that stands in his way.
(Don't worry about these exceptions too much, though). :P
But generally, these Pokémon-only worlds only have Pokémon and these worlds are all that they have ever known in their lifetimes. Humans to them are the stuff of fantasy and fairytales and to tell them humans exist would be like telling people mermaids and centaurs exist. They know what they are but they're just myths to them.

It's open to people of ALL skill levels, so don't feel BAD about where your art stands. This is a great chance to build on it and improve and see how other people do things, so see it as a great opportunity. Like they told me. You don't have to be involved in the artwork. Maybe you could help with the writing if you're too busy. I'm not great at art as I've said before, but I can help write out ideas. One day I'll offer a page, but it won't be very special at all....it'll be special in its own way xD, but not great. So even if it was a little longer, I'm sure it would be okay as long as you kept Neko and the others updated on the progress.
