This might be a dumb idea, but would it be cool if most of the characters were PXR members as Pokemon? Like in the PXR Adventures (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?12763-PXR-Adventures!-(We-make-fun-of-you!)) stories? That way there wouldn't have to be a limit to a few characters since we all already know each other. And I think people like seeing things starring themselves, so they might be more interested in reading and participating. And of course, even if we did this, it would probably still be a good idea to have a main character not based on a member. Just a thought :)

This looks really cool and I look forward to seeing how it goes! :D

Ah, make one anyway. It's good practice before the real deal begins. I had fun making Natalya the Zorua even though it kind of seems like Edgar is going to end up as the protagonist for this one. He definitely seems like a fun character to work with and Quagsire isn't a super-complicated Pokemon to draw in different poses. :3

From what it sounded like, characters that don't win could be used for other roles. So a character you make could potentially appear at other times in the comic, even if they're not the protagonist. So Natalya could be the leader of a rival team that tries to compete with Edgar. Something like that. So try it make a character anyway. It's fun and you never know, they could be used elsewhere if they fit into the mix.

In a nutshell, it should try to aim to be a basic stage, you need to draw it, and you just need to focus on the character's personality and description. Not their background or plot basis. That's to be determined as the comic goes on. You also can have a few unique markings and features for the character, but nothing too crazy.

Something that's been mentioned but not properly decided on. How many 'winners' do we want for the contest? Obviously, the choice with the most votes will be the 'main' character in a sense- but do we want to start with two or three main cast members (how to add them to the story will be writer's choice)?

I'd be okay picking 2 winners (especially in the event of a tie!).

Nekomata I was going to suggest two; I wouldn't think you'd want any more than that to start off with. We can always add more later!

Yaaas I'd like more than one! Three sounds good to me. I really wanted to vote for some others but couldn't. :[ So it would be good if other characters showed up!

Two to three sounds fine. Maybe the other characters could take up side roles too? Like one's a shop owner and one's a cook, stuff like that. That way it doesn't feel like someone's character isn't good enough like my poor baby Spirit.

Two works great for me. Pretty standard PMD start. I like having a lot of characters but throwing too many in in the start distracts from the story.

I'd be game with having the top two or three, also. But quickie cameos from the other characters would still be cool. :3

Man, I can't wait to get this started! With the character voting closing tomorrow, I'll be able to get working on that first page! Couldn't have picked a better weekend! Just turned in a big project, next one isn't due until the Wed. after next- so this'll be my easiest weekend for a while. =D

Just some things to discuss:

Page sizes: I'd like to set a dedicated page size for the comics to prevent us from having one page be, oh, say 800x1200 and then ext being 200x300 or something. Would everyone be okay if we set a required size for this? I'm a bit OCD with consistency, but if everyone is okay doing whatever sizes, I'll manage. xD If we agree on a set size, I'll be using my normal template for PRS for the first page unless people request a different size before I get started. Note: This size is only for final upload/sharing/whatever. I tend to work on a much larger image and scale down for things- that's fine! (Just remember: Scaling up is a bad thing to do in non-vector art!)

Uploads: Do we want to post the pages exclusively here on PXR, or would people be for the idea of posting the comic on SJ or something for more visibility? The upside to doing it on SJ would be to get some exposure for PXR and whatnot. I would be happy to manage the SJ site and whatnot if we do something like that.

Credits: I don't typically sign my comic pages, but due to nature of this collaborative project, feel free to sign your own pages so everyone knows who did what! Just make sure the signatures don't effect the readability of the pages.

I think the 800x1200 setup is perfect. No problems there. I may be new to comic page layouts, but I've checked out the size in Photoshop and I think it's something I can work with without a problem. I'm also cool with these being posted to SJ.

And sure, I'll sign my pages, although I don't usually put signatures or watermarks on my stuff. I'll be honest, I don't even mind if people use my art for whatever, just as long as they don't say "oh yeah, I made that" when really they didn't.

But yeah, everything looks really great and I'm looking forward to seeing this party in action. :3

If anyone wants to use my page template, I'm more than happy to post up a PSD that includes the high-res size + my base layer setup. It's just how I organize my comic page PSD files. It includes layers for sketch, lines, several layers of flats + various shading layers already marked out and put in the styles I use.

I usually hide my signature in larger pieces, but not for comics. I do mind if people use my work without asking- but if they ask first, it's alright. I just like to track where my stuff is posted.

And we're starting tomorrow if my shoulder stops aching before then! The allnighters I pulled this week took a toll on me. Worse than usual this time. Hopefully another night of rest will do the trick!

I like the idea of a uniform page size. Perhaps we should also consider a uniform page color (to fill the negative space) and maybe a uniform text font for the page title and page number and stuff. Of course, the text font and other elements in the actual comic will still be left up to the individual artist.

I don't think page titles or numbers are necessary. The negative space can vary from scene to scene, I think it'd be fair for the person next in line to adopt the previous color unless a change happens. Most of the time though, it'll probably be white.

Edit: Also, if anyone likes, I will be willing to offer constructive critiques on contest entries or pages. Just say so somewhere if you're open for that! I do want to help others improve on their work while still having fun! I can critique on layout and comic-specific aspects along with art or separate if people would like!

I know that most published comics (from what I've seen) write in all caps (which is also the font style) so it might be best if we decide to use a font that has no difference between its uppercase and lowercase letters. :] Anyone else think that's a good idea?

I've already put my main SJ account as a co-author with permissions to mess with whatever so I can easily manage it without signing in/out all of the time. I'd prefer access to the PXR account be limited to a 'as absolutely needed' basis since there will be many people on this project. I can easily add people as co-authors and given them powers to add pages and whatnot, so that should work easily enough. Managing the SJ site won't be difficult for me at all- SJ is fairly low maintenance and whatnot.

I've finished the sketch for the first page. I'll treat this first one like I would a PRS page since it's the first page, but future pages might not get this much love. That first panel is gonna kill me tonight. Taking a break for now!

That question mark is so weird. xD I want to see if I can find something with a normal one. A little more friendly to those with weird eyes. xD

I'm doing the first page- it's in order of signups. I've already got it sketched out and ready to line/color (I'll probably stream it later tonight). I might not finish today cause the first panel is a very busy establishing shot. xD we'll see. I'll post the link here when I start (~20-30 mins)

Sometimes when a font doesn't have the é with the accent, I just draw it in there. There's always that route too. :P

Thanks! I wanted to start with a bang, so I went pretty wild with the art! Took about 4 hours, but I'm happy! Got some stuff in there for people to play with too. Where is Ed going? Just What was Natalya up to before bumping into Edgard? Is that Noivern cave a guild? A king's cave? A villain's lair? Aaah- excited to see where people take this. <3

I lied, it took me 5 hours-ish: Forgot to take into account the time it took to sketch. xD

I'm fast-ish cause well... -looks at PRS- 160 pages of comics gives you a little practice at being more efficient with your art techniques. xD I would hope I've gotten a little fast at my comic style after all these years. I'm currently rendering out the video process for the page. It'll be ready in a few hours... or tomorrow afternoon if I don't stay up to wait. xD

And uh... my favorite color? I don't have one anymore. I love covers in combinations with one another. xD Being an artist long enough does that to you.

Thank you! Since I was first in line to make a page, it's only right I start with an establishing shot. Wanted to take advantage of getting to draw the establishing shot and made it my goal to create an interesting place to start the story in. xD I'm happy with it. Alright--might be a good idea to discuss it with the other comic staff (a.k.a. me and Max). Personally, as an S.Admin, I like the subboards. You're right that it might not be necessary, but it's a cool touch to the forum and personally I really like the setup. It's also good for people who have multiple threads relating to their comic. If we do merge everything and move it to the Artist's Easel, though, people can just add their own prefixes to threads if they want multiple for their comic.

Really? xD Mine take ~1.5-5 hours per page. Depends on the following:

- The number of panels on the page.
- The number of characters on the page (having the same character in two panels counts as two characters)
- If it's action based or dialogue (action stuff takes longer to draw cause weirder poses require more time)
- The specific characters on the page (Naya = easy. Dialga = hard.)
- The complexity of the backgrounds
- The type of shots used (establishing shots = long time, extreme close-ups = little time)
- How complex is the lighting setup. Neutral sunlight is fast, more dramatic lighting takes more time.

The first PMDXR page took me about an hour to sketch and four hours for the rest. Over half that total time was on the establishing shot alone.

I also have a very bad habit of working on the page from start to finish in one sitting. Well, sort of. Sometimes I'll sketch out multiple pages ahead of time THEN do lines > finish in one go for each page.

Now that I've gotten pretty into it, I know a better way to handle the next page I end up doing, so that will save me a lot more time at least. I tried to use the pen tool in Photoshop and... nah. I just really don't like that rendition of the pen tool and it takes buttloads of time. I like the one Paint Tool SAI uses a heck of a lot more and I just personally find it way more easier to work with. I would basically do the next page like this:

Storyboard on paper
Set up panels in Photoshop
Import to Paint Tool SAI for sketch, refined sketch, and lineart. Chararcters on one series of layer, backgrounds on the other series of layers.
Export back to Photoshop
Color, shade, and highlights
Insert dialogue bubbles

I did this a little out of order and it just didn't click with me, but now I know what I'm doing and I'll have a better idea of how I want to handle the next round.

I put together a post that includes a few brush sets up in the tips/tricks/guides thread. It's includes some of the brush sets I use or keep meaning to use. Both free and paid! I'll be adding things like links to guides and videos that I think are worth looking at later, too!

I HIGHLY recommend Kyle's Megapack. In there are included some of the BEST inking brushes I've seen to date. Compare my lineart from early PRS days to today- look carefully enough and I'm sure you'll be able to pick out the page I started using his brushes for my lineart. xD

Anyway, time to hunt down my favorite guides and whatnot!

Yeah, I hope people are okay with the plot twist. I've been reading Deadpool and he's constantly crossing dimensions, so I felt it would be kind of cool if PMD did a thing like that. They usually have the hero come from another world and in another occasion, another timestream, but I think this might be neat new territory to explore.

And yeah, I haven't done a comic page in decades, and back then it was with stick figures, so I don't even think that really counts. But yeah, that last shot was quite a bit of work but I think it really did a nice job for the dramatic effect. Overall, I'm really happy with the way it came out and I definitely think I can get into this playing field. :3

I can tell you put a lot of work into this page! ^_^ Those extreme wide shots are truly a pain- but they're always worth it for effect or just pretty scenery. xD You've got more patience than I do. I wouldn't have dared to do another extreme wide shot so soon after that last one. I'd have noped my way out of that and gone the lazy route. xD

And I'm glad it was fun! I'm hoping this'll be fun for most! It's not as much work as solo-ing a comic but still allows for people to partake in visual story-telling! I love the possibilities that it brings. <3 So much potential for silly shenanigans too.

I'm pretty structured with my comic layering. I made a comic template file that mimics my usual layering structure of PRS pages since I tend to be fairly consistent on that end. It helps streamline the process a bit! It looks a bit like this:

It saves me the time of making the same layers I use on most pages. The background layers vary a lot more, so I don't have many of those in the template file. xD

And yeah- I wouldn't be able to support another comic on top of PRS if it were Full Time. I mean, I've got another in the works, but it's indefinitely in the planning stages and won't go into production for a few years, I'm guessing. I want to finish PRS first. I'm pretty structured with my comic layering. I made a comic template file that mimics my usual layering structure of PRS pages since I tend to be fairly consistent on that end. It helps streamline the process a bit! It looks a bit like this:

It saves me the time of making the same layers I use on most pages. The background layers vary a lot more, so I don't have many of those in the template file. xD

And yeah- I wouldn't be able to support another comic on top of PRS if it were Full Time. I mean, I've got another in the works, but it's indefinitely in the planning stages and won't go into production for a few years, I'm guessing. I want to finish PRS first. C: Yeah, I actually go more for the anime designs since I'm way more used to using that as reference so I was kind of like "ehh, not sure what to do here but they'll know who it is anyway." I also didn't expect for Natalya's eyes to be more slanted than rounded, but I felt that gave her a really cool and extra mischievous look so I decided to roll along with that.

I'd say try the mix, but most of all, whatever you feel most comfortable with. I think everyone has their own special style and approach, so there's really no right or wrong way of doing it. Seeing the different styles work together is the awesome part anyway.

I usually sit around 10-20 layers for simple things. But for full blown paintings and more complex stuff, it starts to get really up there. xD I like using lots of layers since it makes it easy to edit stuff.

And I figure I'll put in all background characters even if they aren't currently important. This way people can remember who currently exists in the world and re-use them instead of making new background charries left and right. xD

As I've stated, the reference thread is very much a big WIP right now. I rushed some quick color palettes for people to use until I can get a more detailed looking one. I'll be including any official references as well as smaller color references in the final thread. I personally find the smaller color banners easier to pull up for color picking while working on a page than I do the more massive full-sized references. That's why I'll be making those in addition to posting the original references later on. Though, I'm not sure if we'll have anymore full-sized references since that would require a little more work. Maybe just for important characters. We'll see. I promise the thread will be more organized and include any/all references though!

And take your time with the page! We're all excited, but by no means don't feel rushed! ^_^ Don't let the speed of crazy people like myself/Major make you feel you need to have 1-4 day turnarounds too. If you need a little more time past the 2 week 'limit' - just say so! So long as the page is started and whatnot, adding a little time to the limit isn't a problem at all.

As for how American comics work- my favorite ongoing series is an american comic. For the most part, it's got one 'main' artist that has done a good majority of the issues- but every so often another artist will come in and fill a story arc. It's not uncommon to see comics rotate artists are more regular basis than that though- especially between DC and Marvel where they want to get issues out ASAP. I personally like that my favorite has a main artist- but that's cause his ink-work is godly amazing. The fill ins just can't compete. xD On very rare occasion you'll see two artists work on the same issue- but it's usually split by issues or story arcs.

- Use a good scanner, not a camera. Unless taken from the perfect angle, the perspective will warp the page. Also, cameras rely on decent lighting. This can really mess up the legibility of a page.
- I suggest INKING the page. Pencil can be hard to see after a scan or photo. Get some good inking/art pens for this- not your normal writing pens. These can make your page infinitely more legible.
- This is a rule, actually: Make sure to edit the page in some art program to resize it to the proper size dimensions.
- While you're there, adjusting brightness and contrast can help.
- Please do your lettering digitally. For the sake of consistency and not having to read potentially bad handwriting (Not saying anyone's handwriting here is bad!)
- Not a rule, but having color would be nice. But good coloring supplies can be a bit pricey.

Other notes:
- Reminder that you're more than welcome to work with other artists during your turn. If you want to upload your pencils and ask an artist to digitally ink it for you then send it back to you for colors (or color it themselves), that's perfectly acceptable! Other budget inking tools include sharpie markers. I'm just wary of your average office pens since the ink flow stinks and don't produce quality linework for drawing- especially over pencil.

This is me. xD I've always wanted to start my own comic, but...motivation. It usually falls pretty flat, aha. D: That and I always get too ambitious.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It looks fun to run your own comic. Doing my own page was quite a pleasure and it's nice to know I'm capable of doing it, even though there was quite a bit of work involved. But it's fun work. :3

But for me, it's not so much motivation that's the issue, but... TIME. I think the lack of time is really the only thing holding me back.

Other budget inking tools include sharpie markers. I'm just wary of your average office pens since the ink flow stinks and don't produce quality linework for drawing- especially over pencil.

I don't have any 'standards' for PMDXR. It's a for fun. I was simply trying to offer some budget-friendly advice. Sorry for trying to be helpful. I won't do it again.

Theres always a work around.
As Neko said, you could cooperate with artists who have the tools. I think giving your pencil drawing to someone else with photoshop, who can use tools to trace it, then give it back so you can color it. That way, it will still be in your style. That's my suggestion.

I still need some more time, though. All of last week was sacked from me being on vacation and then I was juggling ideas on how to move along the storyline, but I finally decided on something nifty and I just finished storyboarding last night. So now I just need to draw everything.

I like how it's coming along! Almost done with the character sketching. :) I have some more time tomorrow, so I'll probably make better headway on this. I'm kind of hoping by the time the weekend is up, it'll be cranked out and done. Should be faster considering Twisted Cave is way easier to draw than Seaspire City! XD

Yep, my dad and I went to Savannah Georgia and it was pretty nice! And then... Hurricane Irma. Yeah, our last day there kind of got a little bleak with everything boarding up and closing down with the mandatory evacuation. But we still had some fun all those other days. :3

Thank you! I'll admit, this was actually my first time drawing Ninetales! It's funny how Ninetales usually looks a bit more on the feminine side, but this one looks way more masculine. Maybe it's the scars, the rough attitude, or what have you, but hey, Ninetales is a Pokemon I like a lot and I thought it would be cool to put one in and give that Accelgor a partner in crime who may be even nastier than him! We'll see, it's kind of out of my hands now until we come full circle again! And wow, a whole lot happened between the last page I made and this one!

But YES, this story is really exciting and seeing all the different art styles is awesome.

Saaame. I've started two semi-recently, actually. xD Both are unreleased though. One I plan to release eventually if I can manage to pump out pages regularly and trust myself with a schedule that I'll commit to. The other was a Nuzlocke that I always wanted to release but we'll see. I've got a few pages of that one done. I just suck at drawing humans so each page takes me an absurd amount of time to draw. x__x That's the thing--if they were quicker to draw, I would absolutely commit but each page takes so long because my drawings are only 'good' if I spend a lot of time on them. xD
