The Writer's Guild
Greetings, authors from near and afar! I know there's quite a number of you here on this forum who have dabbled in the art of creative writing, and I wanted to create this group as a place where you can come together and share your ideas, get important feedback, and or just mingle when that darn writer's block has ya down.
This is not only a place for fan-fiction writers, but original fiction/non-fiction writers as well! And actually, everyone is welcome to join in--readers or non-writer's alike. The goal of the group is to improve our stories by working together! I only have a few rules that should be followed:
1.) Be kind and courteous to all other members, and provide constructive criticism. Don't get on here and say things like "Ermagerd, this stinks like donkey poo, why do you bother writing?" That's rude and not at all helpful. No one becomes a great writer overnight, and even the best writers were n00bs once. Writing takes practice, just as any sport or art out there. As critics, your goal is not to discourage writing, but to help them become better.
2.) No stealing and other such mischief. This is to be a circle of trust and HONOR. HOOOONOOOOOOR!
3.) If you're working with original fiction, I actually wouldn't suggest you posting it on the internet. But if you'd like feedback, I would suggest asking so on this group, then PMing your excerpts to people interested in helping. And people who volunteer to help... TRUST CIIIIRCLEEEE. (And HONOR!) But, if you're not too worried (or you're writing fan-fiction), you can post excerpts on this thread in spoiler tags (as long as they aren't too long. If they're longer than what a single post can handle, I would suggest posting it the Writer's Desk then posting a link here.
4.) I'll add more rules as I see fit.
Anyway, let's have a go at this, shall we? If you'd like to join up as a member just say so (and bold it so I don't miss it xD) and hop right in!

Bingo. Maybe this will knock my creativity back into gear.
Once you realize your story has a timeline that is 1.5 pages long...You kind of wonder or go "Oops" XD

I have single character timelines that go longer? *cough*
Maybe I can get people to read my MMX Fic that I actually speak to online...

Alright! Awesome people! :D I'm way excited to see y'all here! ^^
So hey, guys, welcome to the group! ^^ Guess we could start with the typical ice-breaker: why don'tcha tell us about your projects? What have you worked on, are currently working, and what you would like to work on? :)

Well my biggest project right now is my wrestling fic Loving Hope (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?1172-Loving-Hope-Mature&p=18376#post18376) and I'm actually on version number 3 as of now. I've started over a few times and so far I'm really liking how this version is going.
I would love to try and write a Pokemon fic but I don't want to just do the standard Trainer goes off on their adventure. But I'm not sure what I would want to try and do with that.

@Caite-chan You could always right that fanfic from the Pokemon's perspective.
My single fan project at the moment is Mass Effect: Discovery (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?815-Other-Mass-Effect-Discovery-(PG-15)), which expands on the Mass Effect universe and gives closure to the ending of the trilogy. It follows a young protagonist and his allies as he experiences the dangers of the galaxy and the secrets of the Traverse. The overview is maybe twenty pages long, primarily because I am attempting to keep the project as accurate with lore as possible without changing too much. The premise of one of the endings will, however, be changed a tad but not completely so.
The second chapter is almost complete and will be posted in a few days.

I'm working on a Megaman X fan fiction right now because SOME COMPANY... is not giving them proper attention that they need. Despite the fact I have only played a total of two MMX games, read a bunch of books and have a guru who teaches me this stuff, I've been told I am very 'close to canon'.
Other than that I have things in waiting, while I focus on finishing that fan fiction. It sucks being me because my brain won't let me write about a character until I see or make a visual of it. Then it won't let me write about the picture unless I make it work in some sort of sense. THEN if I don't have writers block, I can write.
My brain sucks most times ladies and gents.

I never thought about it that way. Although I'm really bad at planning things. Most of the time I make stuff up as I go along and hope it works.

I don't see why you couldn't do that from the Pokemon's perspective. Plus, you don't even have to have humans involved.

Sign me up, pretty please?
I, personally, am really really bad at planning. Usually, after I form an idea, I give it a vague outline mentally and then begin writing, going back to revise later.
I'm not much for fan work, though. Except for a couple of self-indulgent Gravity Falls episode ideas, I mostly focus on original things. My three leading projects are a post apocalyptic sci-fi-esque thing about a couple of rival revolutionary leaders; a story about the kids of some superheroes who have vanished; and a dark animal fantasy thing about cats. My head is a mixed bag. nvn

Velo! :D I was hoping you'd sign up~! ^^
You guys talking about planning and such reminded me of a lecture I watched one time, and it talked about two categories of writers: NaNoWriMo calls them "pantsers" and "planners" (if I remember correctly), and this guy called them gardeners and architects. Pantsers/Gardeners don't plan out to much and just let the story go wherever it wants to, while Planners/Architects thoroughly plan out EVERYTHING. (The guy talking about this in the lecture though noted that it's more of a continuum than two distinct groups)
Er, but sorry, didn't mean to sound like a know-it-all there ^^' Just thought it was interest :D Anyway~
@Caite-chan: Loving Hope really sounds interesting :o If it's about wrestling, could it be considered original fiction? (or do you use real people as characters?) I've thought about reading it, though the mature warning on it kinda gave me pause. Why did you give it thhat rating? Also, there's actually quite a bit more you can do with Pokemon fan-fiction than the typical cut and paste Trainer adventure. Like TotS said, you can always do it from a Pokemon's perspective (Suicune's Fire's Through a Flareon's Eyes is a reeeeeaaaallly good example of this!)
@TotS: Mass Effect! I don't know anything about it, but that sounds srsly cool! Is Sci-fi the genre you like writing in? ^^
@Sabi: You know, Megaman's probably one of those games I really should look into xD The new SSB game has really piqued my interest ^^ That's interesting with the visual thing :o I wish I had the artistic ability to make a visual of my characters--the most I can do is make a map xD (and that's a must for my stories xDDD)
Velo was telling me about of her stories, and they sound amazing! :D

Yes, SF's fan fiction is definitely a brilliant example of a story from the Pokemon's perspective. Explore the emotions and interactions between the Pokemon. :D

Ah, Mass Effect has pretty extensive lore, so that is understandable. I definitely recommend the first game if you ever get the chance (it is pretty cheap nowadays). Yeah, sci-fi is my favorite genre to write in. Thank you! :D

I imagine it must be like trying to jump into the Kingdom Hearts lore. Except with less Disney. And stuff. Anyway, cool! ^^ I've wanted to try some sci-fi, but I've been writing fantasy for two long I'm having a hard time balancing the two xD Like, I reaaaaallly want to write a post-apopcalyptic book but somehow it started incorporating magic and "light vs dark" wierdness. Hahaha, it's not going anywhere xD

Well I can't claim the wrestlers as my own (Like Petey...lol) as they are real people. But Molly is my own character and Ajay is a friend of mines character. And we both own Jack and any other kids. The reason I gave it the warning was for one the cussing in it and there may possibly be some nakie fun later on if you know what I mean...LOL. Nothing hardcore graphic though promise. Anything fun in the bedroom will be done in a good manner and have a warning at the top of the page.

Okay, I have debated, and I think I would like to sign-up. I have something in the works right now but I'm not sure how long it'll take or if I'll get frustrated (or busy) and quit. But it's a Kingdom Hearts fanfiction that is set in KH2 and focuses on one world that I'm adding: a super smash bros brawl world. So far I've wanted to try to stay true to both storylines, casting Sora in the SSBB story, but also including of course heartless, the organzation and lesser nobodies (this seems like it would meld quite well with the SSBB story). I want to use the pokemon characters extensively (and add one at least) since it's being written for this forum. I'm having to do research on Fire Emblem and Metroid, which I have very little knowledge of but which I want to include.
That said it's all in my brain right now. I'm playing SSBB right now to stay 'close to Canon,' as Sabi's friend geniusly has it.
Like, I reaaaaallly want to write a post-apopcalyptic book but somehow it started incorporating magic and "light vs dark" wierdness. Hahaha, it's not going anywhere xD
Those themes can and do work quite well together though. If I may inject some input from a philosophical/theological perspective without being ostentatious, light and darkness are often conceived of as describing spirit and matter respectively so that "being light" would mean a flight from time, space, and the material. However in an apocalyptic setting you can present light and darkness as historical realities both at work in the world in which we live.
However you do it, the mention of the apocalypse just makes me salivate. :O

Ooh, SSBB world. Sounds neat, since a lot of fan made SSB games include Sora.
Since Sanctus mentioned his KH fic, I'll mention mine too.
My KH fic is set in another world and is based on a fictional lore I made about when Light and Darkness were completely neutral parties and fed into one and other. [I like being different and I heard enough DARKNESS DARKNESS, DARKNESS jokes as it is.] Before one was designated good and one was evil. I'm not sure where its set but I'm probably going to write it pending what happens in KH3 since I was going to have it for after KH2. However since I take forever to write things and I can't make up my mind on how to develop things in my head, it gets to wait until my MMX one is done and after KH3 comes out and I've played the ever living hell out of it.
Char: Yes you can definitely put any kind of spin on that, like I am with my KH fic. Often times I take one common aspect that people normally use, and figure out how to turn it around in a unique way.

@Sabi: Lolz~ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MzxQ61b-gOo) That sounds cool, though, too! You guys have reminded me of an old RP idea (http://pokemonelite2000.com/forum/showthread.php?t=115921) that I had that I wanted to turn into a fan-fiction of sorts. I always thought it'd be interesting to do as kind of a multi-author thing where people could just write their own stories in the setting I presented in that RP. Like, a veeeery extensive RP but you use your characters only. Or something. But IDK xD
But hmm... You've guys have given me some serious thought. Maybe I can pull off this apocalyptic weirdness xD

Which games and which books (I didn't know there were Megaman books o_O)? I'm curious as to where your inspiration is coming from. From the MMX series, I think I played mostly X4-8. I believe I remember X5 most vividly from when I was 10 and would visit my friend's house and we'd stay up all night playing MMX, Gundam, and watching anime.

When I heard that Megaman was going to be a character in SSB, I anticipated in vain the use of the Legends Megaman. They may still make him available when you change his outfit (doubt it), but even if they do he won't be in the cutscenes. :/ Of course, that Megaman has gone the way of no return, probably. Capcom scheduled a trilogy to the series a couple of years ago for release on the DS and cancelled it. What nonsense!

Besides that, I'd be very anxious about speculating further than DDD in a KH FF. I thought about it but I was concerned that whatever I came up with, the third installment would make my fan fiction look horrid. Your idea will give you a lot of creative freedom though. Interested to see what you'll do with it.

I've played X8... on easy... and Megaman Zero and ZX... yeah I am not good at them. The books I speak of are the Complete Works books with all the development information for the Megaman X [the book I have anyway] games from 1 to Command Mission to Maverick Hunters and Extreme and everything in between. That's where I got most of my information from. Also there is a Megaman Zero manga. The Manga is a horrible excuse for literature and is held responsible for murdering trees. However this (http://www.interordi.com/mboard/topic.php?page=1&id_topic=11777) review of it makes me laugh EVERY single time.

Don't even get me started on Legends 3. Don't. Crapcon.... oh--no Sabi, no tangent for you. No. Crapcon has been killing off poor Megaman for awhile. They promised us at least the demo of what they had done, but did they deliver? NO. I'm glad Nintendo did SOMETHING GOOD with poor Megaman. Archie comics has been doing a hell good job with the comics. I heard they may do spin offs [mmxplsplsplsplsplsarchie] if they get enough feedback. Nintendo just needs to buy Megaman. Or Sega. One of the two. It's not like Crapcon has no evidence that people don't want to buy Megaman [Especially MMX] because you try to buy an X figure online from D-Arts? ALWAYS SOLD OUT. Or on eBay for $200+ US/Canadian when regular retail price is $80.
Also I just realized you and I are on the same side when it comes to MML 3. You get friend request. Right now. /highfives

Its basically looking into what happened way way way way back a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away ways into the beginning of things. Dare I say its an origin story. DDD gave me more to work with via how my original character involved in said story got some of the things she has. Hoping 3 does the same thing since I stray a tad from the 'heart' theme and go into more 'well wtf happens in the background?' details. Also that Keyblade MAsters can unlock whatever they want. So I'm thinking 'well sure okay, but things that go through locks aren't always simple... what if someone mediated what goes in and out of something that was once locked?' Thus BAM. Fanfic idea started and it went from there.

I've played X8... on easy... and Megaman Zero and ZX... yeah I am not good at them.
I remember the X series giving me a pretty hard time at the bosses, and a couple of annoying places where you have to time your jumping. I swear I know people that manage to go through those like it's nothing, but I have been known to spend up to an hour on them at times. XD I have an amazing will for the first 20 minutes. But around the 20 minute mark I sigh, slouch, and grow disgruntled until 40 minutes later, I pause the game to return hours later after my blood pressure goes back to normal and do it no problem.
All that just to say that there are some games that I just suck at, but I guess gaming isn't always about being good. Unless it's a fighting game, haha. I get annoyed and pretty childish when I'm horrible at a fighting game.
The books I speak of are the Complete Works books with all the development information for the Megaman X [the book I have anyway] games from 1 to Command Mission to Maverick Hunters and Extreme and everything in between. Ugh! They did THAT to Zero?! That is... pathetic... >_< Hilarious review though. Actually makes me want to get the manga because it's so bad it's funny.

Megaman Legends was a huge part of my childhood. I never owned it, I rented it at the Blockbuster. And it was never there because I always had it. It was the second game I ever beat after Pokemon, and I knew the game inside and out without a walkthrough because of how many hours I put into it. If I had learned about the intended release of MML3 prior to its cancellation, I might have actually shed a tear to have the anticipation destroyed.
I agree with you that they should sell Megaman. It's such a beloved, longrunning franchise. Why do nothing with it?
Also I just realized you and I are on the same side when it comes to MML 3. You get friend request. Right now. /highfives

I thought of doing an origins story, but I'm just baffled at the prospect of it precisely because of certain things you mentioned, mainly the lack of a distintion between light and darkness. I'll be cheering you on though. You have a lot of time to think on it before KH3 is here, and of course KH3 will make the job a lot easier.

I would love to try and write a Pokemon fic but I don't want to just do the standard Trainer goes off on their adventure. But I'm not sure what I would want to try and do with that.
I've reflected on this some. Here's something that might help you with a creative kickstart aside from the fine choice of writing it from a Pokemon's perspective as has already been suggested. I made a cursory list of different Pokemon occupations:
Gym Leader
Elite 4
Scientist/Breeder (and here you could have a specialty in different types)
Police Officer
Nurse/Doctor
Villain Team Grunt, Admin, or Leader
Radio Show Host
TV Reporter
For prewriting, you could take the ones you like and create a branch and combine some. One that I came up with could be taken in a humorous direction: an indie radio show host who also happens to be the leader of a villain team.

In other news, I just created a Google Drive folder entitled 'freaking write u bum'. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to give myself the metaphorical kick to get writing? I have plans, but for me the beginning is always the hardest part, and neither of my two current projects want to have beginnings. If someone could supply advice I would be quite indebted.
This is semi-related because storytelling, but does anyone have any experience with graphic-novel type things? I have an idea in my head for a short one and it would be helpful to have someone who knows what they're doing to bounce some stuff off of.

xD That's an awesome name xDDDD Well, from my NaNoWriMo experiences, I know something that might help? Maybe? They have "Word Wars"--which is to see who can write the most words in a certain amount of time. We could do one of those in this group ^^
Man, I wish I could art. But my art is fart. So can't help ya there xD ASK SABI *pokes* :3
I need to chase down some of these old writing tips I've found online and share them on here; maybe they'll be helpful. Maybe xD Although, if any of you find some, feel free to share as well! ^^

Ooh, that sounds like a good idea. I'd be willing to participate! Some sort of motivator is just the thing I need.
It's not artistic so much as dialogue and pacing choices. Artistic stuff I'm 90% sure I can handle, but since the comic is so short, getting everything through while maintaining a cohesive flow and good pace is going to be an issue.

My computer at home is oooold and I don't even have internet anymore. I access the web strictly at other places, usually around 11PM-2AM central time. So while it is theoretically possible for me to engage in a skype chat (I don't have one but I can get one), it'd be difficult to be on at the same time as everyone else.

At any rate, I think we're fairly familiar with each other now ^^ Now that we've talked about Megaman, Kingdom Hearts, and everything in between, let's open the floor up for your guys' works :D
If you have anything that needs critiquing, share with us! ^^ If we could all critique as a group, that'd be great too ;) (also, I think I mispelled critique. OH WELL xD)

I, personally, don't have enough written for critiquing. Hmmm. Well here's a little poem I wrote very quickly a couple of nights ago.
Laziness. He's my chillest pal
He's the most loyal guy around!
My objectives continously grow and grow
Yet Laziness is there to share the load
He never eats, never sleeps, never misses a beat
I've simply never met anyone so persistant as he!
What would become of all my duties and tasks,
If only Laziness would cease and not harass?
Just ponder: If all my hopes and good intentions
Were met by a brazen will with no objections!
But alas, it is easier to dream than to act
Harder to fulfill obligations than sign contracts
I command: My Soul, pursue! But Laziness shall not do
Lagging and sloth are the portion of my days
And I've no virtue to end these fruitless ways

By the way, does anybody have a story they want voice acted? At the same time as I ask that, I want to mention that I don't really want to set up any scenes with characters in shows already that I'll need to find "impersonators" for. Firstly, it seems wrong to cast someone who isn't the original voice actor as the character's voice... It's sorta like how they changed the voices in the anime. I refused to watch it after that. XD Not only that, but I don't want to have to search for them, or wait for people to sign up. If they have to sound like an already-existing voice, it makes things more complicated. Than they need to be. xP
And no, before you ask, I wouldn't plan on doing all/most of the voices for these voice acting scenes; I would simply audition people and put the scene together. x) Then probably post it here somewhere. I've done this in the past on Pe2k, and I'd get you YouTube video links, but it seems they've all been deleted... xD Well probably a good thing, since most of the ones I was in were terrible because my acting suuuuuuucked back then. XD Anywho. Anyone interested in welcome to contact me.

The first chapter was written well over a year ago. I have a habit of not explaining environmental detail too well and I -hopefully- learned from that and expanded more on environmental detail. It was basically a more open area with a lot of debris everywhere, like if a bomb went off. I'm glad I drew you into the story though and made you look stuff up. XD I like getting people into a good franchise. I have I think 9 chapters right now and am working on the latest chapter right now. Okay, so I found that lecture on characters! :D I hope it’s helpful for you, Vegeta, but if it’s not, if it’s not really what you needed help with, then maybe we could just discuss it as a group . I’m actually curious about how you guys feel about characters and how you would go about molding one, rules you’d follow, all that. And I’d like to hear what you thought about the video. It’s definitely not going to apply to everyone, and definitely isn’t the cover-all for characterization, but I thought that this person had some genuinely good insight on creating characters.
So, here it is! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIjFEkoaebc&list=PL8YydnShI45i_D8D1Mn1suFcxuno0hBUL)
Er, it’s a way long lecture (it is from a university class) but it’s been split up into several videos. But in case you don’t have time to watch through all of it I’ll post a little summary.
In the first video, the speaker (Brandon) talks about what makes a character great. Some of the things the class members said was that a good character is relatable, exists beyond the page, has growth and motivation, admirable, but flawed. He notes that sometimes authors put the character’s role before the character’s actual character, and this is something that should be worked on to make characters interesting. His big thing about characters is making them proactive rather than reactionary. They need to actively be doing things of their own will (or pursuing their passions and plans) rather than simply responding to circumstances thrown at them.
Next, he talks about different character types used in literature. There are capable characters, and sympathetic characters. Capable characters excel at what they do, while sympathetic characters are those we can easily empathize with. Sympathetic characters should have similarities with reader (flaws, short-comings, ect) but more importantly they need to show EMOTION. He says this is a problem with new readers—they are more about showing than telling, being more cinematic than in-depth with what their character is feeling. There needs to be a careful balance, however, because you don’t want to overload with drama but at the same time you need to breathe life into the characters and show that they have feelings.
The next set of lectures talk about how to humanize characters, make them seem more dimensional rather than flat and bland. Brandon says this can be accomplished by giving the characters quirks, passions, flaws, and limitations. Quirks in media have often been used as a comedic contrast, like the men in the bar in Disney’s Tangled. You have those big burly men who have silly side hobbies. But quirks don’t have to be comedic like that. He used the example of having a bounty hunter who collects stamps, or the new high school student who likes art. The point is to have something to a character that goes beyond the plot.
There’s some methods to encourage this, and one is the Dossier method, which is kind of like a questionnaire for your characters that lists questions as simple as “what’s their favorite food” and the like. He warns not to go overboard, however. Being an author is like being a stage magician; you show them a little detail, while working things behind the scenes. Skimp on the big, note the small details.
Lastly, he mentions another method for characterizing, which works well for “discovery writers” who just kind of write whatever comes to them. He says you could try casting the wrong person for those roles, and figure out why they can’t work in that role. You feel for how characters belong in your story. He goes on to talk about how the reluctant hero, though not always the best for every story, is interesting to readers because you throw the character out of their comfort zone, and readers are interested in seeing how they cope or develop to deal with their problems.
Some problems can come from this method, as sometimes the MC or character you’re developing can become bland or not well formed. But he just encourages experimenting and practicing.
In the next lecture, he talks about how to make characters sympathetic. He talks about another set of character types: the Everyman and the Superman. The everyman is your average joe forced out unexpectedly on a journey—the Frodos of the universe, if you will. They are more relatable, being prone to flaws. The superman is your capable character, the ones who are good at what they do, and barely have any flaws (he jokes that their flaws are that they are just too good). These would be your Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, ect. Brandon says that a good character has both of each. They can be the everyman with some superman capabilities. Maybe they have one talent they excel at, but are still pretty average joes. Many modern stories show the progression of the everyman to the superman as part of the plot. We love rooting for the underdog and seeing them grow into something more.
Next video talks more about developing flaws and handicaps. He distinguishes the two by defining flaws as characteristics that are the character’s fault. These are internal problems that define the character at the beginning of the story, but do not have to define them at the end. These can be overcome and changed, and worked into the whole progression thing we love so much. Examples: shyness, rashness, rudeness, ect. In contrast, handicaps are something that is not the character’s fault, something that is external that they really can’t do anything about. And really, you don’t want them to. It’s like the one-armed man who wants to play football, or something along those lines.
In the next video, Brandon answers a student’s question and goes more into detail about making characters proactive. He says that looking into their hobbies (quirks) and passions (goals) and continuing them even after the plot monster interrupts them can help build that. There’s the Try/fail cycle, where the characters make attempts to fix their problems but end up failing at first. His example of a proactive character is Han Solo—particularly in the scene where Darth Vader interrupts their dinner by walking in the door. Rather than standing and saying “Oh no!” What does he do? He takes out his gun and shoots the sucker! It fails, but at least Han tried doing something rather than taking in the problem and debating his choices.
His last video wraps everything up by saying that limitations are more interesting. It’s geared more towards making sure magic systems/technologies aren’t overpowered, but he goes over how it’s important to think out the ramifications of your limitations. How the world would be different and all that. But yeah, overall, a very informative lecture!
Um… sorry this was so long xD But if you didn’t tl;dr, please let me know what you thought ^^

Ah, I didn't think about that. Probably because when I hear about buildings and explosions and clean-up duty in Megaman, I instantly get a mental image based on the games. Good point though.
I've looked over some of it again. Sabi wrote:
"Axl immediately went into hover mode and started checking the roof's and higher levels of any buildings he came across, as X went to the ground and middle floors while Zero took any basements."
Maybe what's missing is some detail on how numerous these left-over structures are? Also, how tall are they? Are there any dome buildings and skyscrapers? What do they see in the distance? Sabi also wrote that X had to turn his head from maverick bodies. How many were there, and what kinds?

My big thing is I wasn't sure what kind of a building it was--was it, like, an apartment? Was it futuristic? Was is from the Bronx? I wasn't sure, since I hadn't played those games before xD
But anyway, I'm glad you found that informative ^^ That channel has plenty other good advice too, for plots, settings, and so forth ^^ It's been really helpful to me, personally xD
*flails* y u people copy paste part of my fan fic aaaaahhhh *hides*
Anyway, I hope that my descriptiveness got a bit better as time went on. It was written over a looong period of time. I shall try to improve upon my descriptive skills.
In other news, I got past a character design bump and have official artwork of something now. YAY.
YAY--you share? :D Cuz visuals would help a Megaman noob like me xD
"Checking the roof's" is incorrect. O: Should be "checking the roofs." NO APOSTROPHE, GOSH!
Hey Sabi, if you want, I could try to help you with description. Sometimes I go overboard with it. XDD I dunno, if you feel like you need help or something.

EDIT: LOL, has anyone ever thought that "roof" and "roofs" were funny words? XD The fact that they have Two Os...ahaha... ROOFS! It's like a nickname for "Rufus." XD ROOFS!
Haha, you're awesome at grammar--I would have never noticed that xD
And you're right--roofs is a weird word... What's also a weird word is awkward. Two "w" placed awkwardly next to each other. Talk about awkward. Anyway xD

First thing to know about Megaman is that there are different - as myself and my girlfriend put it - 'species' of Megaman. Classic Megaman, Megaman X, Megaman Zero, Megaman ZX, Megaman Volnutt, Megaman .EXE, Megaman Starforce etc. They are all very different and the only ones that really relate to each other are Classic, X, Zero and some of ZX. All the other ones are fairly separate to themselves as far as I know. Each have their own notable art styles as well.
ANYWAY. Confusing things aside, the one I'm focusing on right now is the X series because its probably my favorite out of my top three. I try to stick to the art style as much as possible [even though how I draw things keeps changing over time like a bipolar maniac] when I make the fan characters, though I might bend some rules here and there.
If you'd like to see all my other designs of the original characters I made for the fic , I can upload the designs and post them here. Since you've all at least read the first chapter, I can give you what one looks like now that I've updated her look (http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t100/Saraibre/CHROD-ECH-0AKAEchoConceptV2_zps7f498003.png).
But wait, the fic said she was dark blue and didn't mention a gem on her helmet and such! INCONSISTENCIES.
Yes, I did say her body was a dark blue and her armor was a silvery colour. Any inconsistencies with her original mention of her appearance and this one are entirely on purpose. Why? Spoilers people, those are spoilers. Is surprise. I'm mean I like to leave people hanging.

Er, really sorry 'bout the awkward double post, guys (I'm a terrible example of a mod, guys, lol), but I just had this idea pop into my head and I really need some help fleshing it out. I hope you don't mind ^^' (and hope that this doesn't seem too selfish of me ^^')
Anyway, this came to me after I caught a katydid and kept it as a pet for a few days (before killing it and mounting it in my insect collection like the horrible biology student that I am haha). What I want to do is write this story about a how a powerful, evil sorcerer dude gets turned into a katydid by an inexperience apprentice mage who has just has ridiculously luck (like, everything just happens to turn out good for him and he doesn't even have to try). Said kid is then thrust on a crazy adventure to find a way to finish of the evil sorcerer dude for good while toting said sorcerer dude along with him. (his sorcery powers got turned off when he turned into a katydid, much to his chargrin, so he's mostly harmless other than his pompous complaints ;P)
That's the basic idea I have in my head--I'm just trying to figure out the different directions I could take. I need to better figure out why this quest has to take place in the first place. Originally I thought that the sorcerer is nearly immortal; due to something like selling his soul or something he gained immense power blah blah and can only be killed by his one true arch nemesis. Some hero or something. And the MC would have to go find this hero in order to vanquish the villain.
I'm debating whether or not to have some bigger problem over top of this all. Maybe some other more villainous villain causing trouble with the kingdoms in my little world. I've decided on a magic system for this story which maybe I could do something with: basically, in order to cast spells and whatnot a mage has to have a magestone, which acts as a channel of sorts. Magestones come in different varieties, some stronger than others. Weak magestones can't handle strong spells, and if a mage invests too much energy into a spell the stone will shatter. Strong magestones are coveted by all mages as it allows them to pretty much do whatever they'd like with no fear of shattering.
So with that in mind, maybe there could be this whole war over some legendary magestone--which happens to fall into the MC's hands (because it was in the possession of his master, who gave it to him before he died).
I'm not 100 percent sure if I should go that direction, though, cuz I don't want to complicate the plot. I'm also debating about the katydid sorcerer's personality. I'm debating whether or not to have him sort of turn good--mostly because I imagine going (unwillingly) through all the MC's trials with him would give him some level of sympathy, I suppose. But I don't know if that's reasonable, cliche, or dumb or whatever xD What would you guys think of that? A story where the bad guy turns (loosely) good (some habits just die hard, though).
(Also, if anyone's interested in this, I do have a little bit written up--it's just a rough draft, though, but still ^^')

That sounds interesting Char. Though I know you've mentioned magic, but what time setting are you planning on having it in? Typical medieval type, more modern or something else entirely? I find what's capable of being done in the time of the setting [depending on the era etc.] can play into how your villain's roll out.

@Char: Ahhhh : O *<3 Mages*
Immortality sounds like the only way to go. I suppose the apprentice mage has contained the katydid in something like a jar? His immortality will have to keep him from being able to be crushed too -- an eternal defensive spell of sorts that for whatever reason this heroic mage character can overcome. I'd propose something to the effect that this defensive spell, while incredibly powerful, is still able to be thwarted if someone who possesses greater offensive magical powers attacks him.
I think the setting is what's going to make things work here. I personally would limit the amount of attention given to attaining these powerful stones if you want to focus on other elements of the plot more -- which I think is a good idea.

It'd the typical medieval type setting, with melding of several other cultures ^^ So, not a whole bunch of technology. Swords and such. Yep ^^

x3 Yesh, mages! <3 Fire Emblem's been fueling the muse, it appears xD
Mkay, yeah, I think immortality would work--and yep, it'll still be in effect when he's a katydid, even though he can't use his powers. And yeah, the katydid will actually be contained in a cricket cage (inspired by the Chinese, who crafted elegant cages specifically for keeping crickets as pets for thier songs and for fighting. Hmm, and that spell thing would work, I think. I was thinking for a while thinking about getting demons or something involved, but maybe that would work better. Hmm...
Hmm, and okay--good point. I gotta get things planned out here a little better, me thinks, but it might be good to limit that. Thanks :)

Phew, I haven't thought too much about lore at this point--I don't want to get into "world-builder's disease", although crafting a little lore will be fun ^^ There definitely should be some mage lore <3 I imagine with the whole magestone thing going on there's lots of lore stuff I can invent :)
I'm thinking about getting some kind of demon involved with the villain, now. His immortality could be the result of a deal he made with a demon, which bound his soul to his magestone. As long as his stone remains intact, he's practically immortal. Since it's laced with demon magic, the stone can only be destroyed by a "holy" weapon, and the only one the apprentice could find is wielded by a hero named Janden. :D And I've also thought of a way I could deal with the sorcerer in the end, but it all depends on whether I want to have a larger plot in play or no :/
Srsly, I can't decide if I should pull the "bigger bad guy at large" thing xD
@Sanctus: Actually, there is kind of a Mages Guild--although it gets destroyed in the beginning by ebil sorcerer dude xD Orathris, the City of Mages.
BTW, you guys have been way helpful with this ^^ Thanks! :D

I would go
If it's more comical -- no bigger bad guy at large
If it's more mature -- yay bigger bad guy at large
Obviously you want some comical elements with the main character being kind of ditzy (<3), but you seem like you want to do more a mature story. May not be bad in that case to just opt for another villain.
This whole thing is bringing back fond memories of my Mage, Saruin, in Ragnarok Online. x3

Write the character like you perceived your friend prior to your falling out. Our characters are based off of perception, even if we extract kernels of truth from the world around us. You are the dictator of your story. You create the reality. You are in control. Adjust the character accordingly.

Pfft. Tombi and I didn't talk for months, and I still planned on using two of her characters in my story. Although I helped in the creation of one, it was still hers. Thing is. though, she wouldn't have cared, because she's not a spiteful person like that. xD

--Serena is a bit of a Meta Girl (so to speak), so expect some commentary on journey fic cliches, as well as some gentle parody of the Pokeverse itself--games, anime, and manga.
--The Mega Ring is not a bracelet, but a literal ring (Serena's is a ruby) To invoke a Mega evolution, the wearer must sing the mystical spellsong unique to each Mega Ring-so no two Mega Rings will have the same spellsong. (Serena's is Jao wiisha nes chiel com yutuul...)

I made extra sure to wake up early the day I left on my adventure. This way, I wouldn't be lost in the horde of other aspiring trainers that had probably woke up late and hoping to Arceus that they would not be stuck with a Pikachu with a attitude (extra points if they got shocked on the first attempt at picking them up) or some other "unwanted" Pokemon, like an Eevee or a Zorua.
Why would Professor Sycamore give such rare Pokemon out, anyway? Once all the Chespins, Fennekins, and Froagies were gone, they were gone--do not pass Go, do not collect 20,000 credits, better luck next year. If you were REALLY lucky, you could talk him into, oh, a Pikachu (thankfully minus the attitude) or an Eevee, but Pokemon outside Chespin, Fennekin, and Froagie were the exception, not the rule...
What do you think, sirs (and madams)?

Omg I hate when people write in quotes because then I can't quote it and have to do the quote code myself. -______- Anyway...
I made extra sure to wake up early the day I left on my adventure.
The phrasing "I made extra sure" sounds sorta odd. Maybe "I tried extra hard to make sure I woke up early" or something?
This way, I wouldn't be lost in the horde of other aspiring trainers that had probably woke up late and hoping to Arceus that they would not be stuck with a Pikachu with a attitude
Should be "woken up" and "an attitude." Should also be "who" instead of "that" because trainers are people, not objects. In that sentence, "and hoping" doesn't really work there. Probably "and hoped" would be better.
Once all the Chespins, Fennekins, and Froagies were gone, they were gone--do not pass Go, do not collect 20,000 credits, better luck next year. Should be "froakie," not "froagie."
Other than that, it seemed pretty amusing. XD I'd like to see the rest of this, despite my general disinterest in parodies.

"Hoping to Arceus" made me smile.
Fair start. Will have to see it in the context of the first chapter to really say much.

Hmm... I can't imagine writing anything but fantasy... I mostly (try to) write about mythological creatures, but when I sit down and start to write a story, I write about the environment and then get stuck. My 'projects' are typically in-depth descriptions of caves or meadows or something and nothing else, usually because I have no idea how to introduce characters in a way that doesn't sound completely stilted and choppy. Does that answer your question?
Suicune's Fire

Did anyone ask you a question? XD
I know what you mean. I always tend to start stories off like that, but what I tend to do is if I talk about the environment, I find a way to incorporate a character into that by relating the character to the environment... Sort of like, I don't know...you come back to something you were describing before, but this time it's because it was disturbed by the character. For instance, you talked about the grass, the trees, the sky, the river...then go back to the grass for a second and mention how some of the blades of grass were being trampled on, or were moved aside when something came through. That's your introduction to the character. Either that or go through and with the last thing you describe (in this case, the river) mention the character.
Think about a movie. Similarly, movies don't typically introduce a character after showing off the environment and then making no connection. Usually there'll be some footage of, say, a really nice field, but then the wind starts blowing more, and the clouds start to darken, and then you see the camera angled at the character's hurrying feet dashing through grass, etc. Just write it as you see it in your head. Also, helps to have a plan. xD

Lol, I asked, silly xD (course I was a ninja and edited it in probably when you didn't notice, lolz)
And coolio--same here! Mostly fantasy, here ^^
And that's interesting that you write in environments like that :o Usually it's the other way around for me--I think of characters before setting (or with a vague setting) and sometimes plot. Haha, like with my katydid villain story xD But ya know, it's sure important to get the setting down as soon as possible ^^

Oh, yes, of course! :D *is totally you posted* Welcome to the Guild! As initiation, you must tell us about you and your writing! I see you write some poetry! I haven't had the time to sit down and read it (actually, this is the first time I've been on since last month ^^'), but you've certainly set a trend in the WD! :D
It's been really quiet here, lately, but, uh... How's it going, writers? ^^
I've been thinking about a Christmas event for the Writer's Desk--people could just post little excerpt they've written about how their characters celebrate Christmas or any other holiday this time of year. Anyone interested?

Well, where shall I start? I love reading science fiction and fantasy genres, and I'm a self-proclaimed bibliophile. I'm very nitpicky over what I read, especially since mainstream fantasy literature has been invaded by unspeakable horrors (read: Twilight, The Mortal Instruments, and other trashy vampire/werewolf romance). I aspire to be a published fantasy novelist. In my free time, especially when down with writer's block, I write poetry. I love poetry; it's so malleable and expressive. I love learning new poetic forms. Recently I found an obsession with senryus, which are the cousins of haikus, and tankas. xD I'm also trying to get my poetry anthology self-published on an ebook but a. I'm lazy and I've been gaming most of the time these days. b. I've no idea how to get started because some say Amazon is bad/good *confused* c. I'm a bit scared tbh.

Well I'm not really crazy over action but I love to read descriptions of epic magic battles between mages. As a worldbuilding perfectionist, I like worlds with variety and creative symbolism. Also I don't like systems whereby magic gets very overpowering (e.g. no cap on usage, OHKO spells *coughharrypottercough* etc).

Sweet sauce! (Fantasy, FTW!)
I've never heard of senryus (that's a cool word... maybe I'll name a character that xD) before, but I'm totally going to look it up now ^^ That's cool that you're trying to get a book of poetry self-published :O It does sound a little scary publishing through Amazon--I've think I've come across some self-publishing advice somewhere, now that I think about it. I'll go through my bookmarks and see if I can find it again ^^ Anyway, welcome again to the group! It's awesome to have you here! :D
@Everyone: Hey, sweet! I wasn't sure if it'd get enough interest! An... author's corner? What exactly does that mean? What does it entail?
Suicune's Fire
02-10-2014, 04:42 AM
Basically it's for things like discussions of ideas, problems, and general threads. Like how in the Pokemon Discussion section, we have random threads like "What's your favourite pokemon?" and such; in author's corners, generally there happen to be threads such as "What's your favourite style of writing" or random other threads like that. It's basically one big discussion sub-forum where we can focus on people's individual stories. It's also, say, an alternative to replying in people's story threads if they want to keep them clean and ONLY full of chapter posts. They can have separate threads for reviews/comments/etc, although that's uncommon and personally I prefer to post all in the same thread.
On Pe2k, for instance, it was useful for ideas and discussion. That's effectively what we would use this one for. I'm asking this specifically because a thread just opened up in the Writer's Desk that was not an actual story post (which are usually closed immediately because you're supposed to HAVE a story when you post a thread) but I was reluctant to close it, since it seemed more like a discussion thread. It would be handy to be able to move those threads into a discussion sub-forum so that we didn't have to close them, and so people could still have whole threads dedicated to their writing, or their particular story. This group/guild is good, but it's not even in the WD area and not many people would know about it. Also, topics (like discussion on particular stories) might get lost in threads like this, whereas having an entire thread dedicated to that one topic (in a place that is suitable to have it--a.k.a. Author's Corner) would be efficient and people can input much easier.
