View Full Version : Nintendo 2DS?!

I guess everyone knows about this by now... the next member of the 3DS family is the... 2DS. I think it's a pretty weird move by Nintendo, and the console itself definitely looks strange. But I kind of like it. If I had the option I would have stuck with my DS Lite rather than move to a 3DS anyway as I don't care for 3D at all. The design reminds me a bit of the original Gameboy/Gameboy Advance. But I think the DS worked well with the folding to protect the screens. It's great that there is a cheap option out there, especially for young kids who can't use the 3D anyway. And releasing it on the same day as X and Y is a great strategy.
Now they just need to get rid of the touchscreen that I never use. XD

If it hurts the eyes during gameplay, it's not worth it for me. I'm just keeping the 3DS. I like my vision.

Don't see how releasing it the same day as X and Y is a good option, since I doubt you'll be able to play 3DS games on it. :P
Anyway, I have no intention of getting one because it doesn't fold, it's bulky, looks like it'd be awkward to hold, the screens are exposed to damages, etc (mainly aesthetic and user-functionality things). I just think it was a really random move on Nintendo's part and I don't see how it's supposed to be better than the 3DS, aside from it's price. If you don't like the 3D, you can always turn it off. Since you can play both 3DS and DS games on it, it's worth the cost, as it's essentially two consoles in one.

You can play 3DS games on it, they'll just be in 2D! It's basically like a weird looking DS Lite that plays 3DS games. xD

Yep and save yourself some money, I suppose!
I guess they are targeting the young audience who can't use the 3D anyway, cos it's bad for developing vision.

Hmm I may get this, as it is cheaper, and I am not to keen for 3D. All I want is to play 3DS games and have WPA compatibility.

It looks way to bulky and I hate how you can't protect the screens. My friend was telling me about it because it would be cheaper and I said it's not worth it if the screens get all scratched up because you can't close it. And he argued about how you need to be careful with it then. I said no....because with a 3DS you can close it up and toss it into your bag. This....this is just a big, bulky and stupid.

^Everything Caite said. Everything.
I'm fine with it not having 3D; I rarely use the 3D, anyway. But how it doesn't fold, the bulk of it, and how the circle pad is right next to the top screen makes it seem like it'd be better to spend a little extra on a 3DS, especially the original one, since it's cheaper than the XL.

This. I'm not sure why they didn't make it fold-able, it's just beyond me. Really, if you want to protect your eyesight, don't play with the 3D on. :P There are settings for that on the 3DS itself!

since it's cheaper than the XL.
The XL is well worth the extra cost, imo. The graphics look so much better and when folded, it's about the same size as a Samsung Galaxy S3, which makes it really easy to hang on to if you hold it like a clutch purse (http://www.shefinds.com/files/2012/10/Hand-Strap-Clutch.jpg).
I can't think of anything to say that hasn't already been stated numerous times, so yeah. In essence, I don't plan on getting one for the same reasons most other people don't want one. I'm 100% content with my 3DSXL. ♥

Well yeah, I don't see a point of getting a 2DS if you have a 3DSXL. But if you're like me and don't want to spend $70 more for nicer graphics and 3D, you should get the 2DS.

If I remember right a slate form factor is cheaper to construct than the clam shell, something to do with the hinges and the leads that connect the bottom half and top half.
I think the 2DS just looks a little unwieldy and bulky. The placement of the shoulder/trigger buttons look a bit uncomfortable

If there is any difference in the production costs, I highly, highly doubt it's a notable amount. A lack of some screws and bolts wouldn't be the reason (or even a contribution to) why the system costs $50 less. :P

It's not so much the parts but the extra work it takes to put together. It's kind of like taking a car to a car shop, the labor usually costs more than the parts.

I was never a fan of the DS's design, but I kind of like this one, it's different! I never carry my DS around without its case, so not being foldable doesn't really make a difference to me, but I can see how it could be annoying. I already have a Pikachu 3DS XL so I won't be getting one of these. Unless they released a Bulbasaur one or something...

Maybe this is a subtle admission of failure? I mean, Nintendo is more aimed at kids than the other big gaming companies (in my eyes at least), but the 3DS's 3D functionalities aren't recommended for children under 6. Kind of a screw up on thier behalf.
Now that I think about it, I might just get myself a regular 3DS instead. Better size, and easier to carry around. Just gotta wait until I get some money haha.

Thing is, how many kids will. You gotta remember, these are 6 years and under we are talking about. They will want the 3D and not really care if it says six and up. As well as parents these days don't have half a crap to give. 10 year olds are allowed to play 18+ games.

This is a good point as well. Then, maybe Nintendo made the 2DS aware of that. However, I couldn't see them making it JUST for that reason.

It would also be the price, and people who just don't want the 3D in general. I would love a 3DS for the wifi capabilities and new games. The 3D doesn't appeal to me too much, however now that I think about it, I would choose a 3DS over a 2DS. I like being able to carry my DS in my pocket (assuming the pocket iis big enough), and would hate not being able to do that.

Instead of releasing a firmware update that implements a child lock on the 3D option for the 3DS, they instead develop an entirely monotonous, unreasonably bulky downgrade in order to make more money.

While its portability may not matter to you, it is a major selling point for a handheld device to be reasonably sized. It is ignorant of them to create this device; but completely like them to release it and, a year later, release the 2DS Lite that will have the ability to fold. Anything to make money I suppose.

I don't think this has to do with money in the way you're talking about. :/ I think it's about people not wanting to buy a 3DS cos they're expensive and most don't use the 3D function, so Nintendo developed a way for people to still be able to buy 3DS games, but use a less-expensive console that they can entirely utilize. The 2DS is about getting people to be more likely to buy 3DS GAMES by offering a cheaper way to play them, along with making it more child friendly. Nintendo is trying to sell more games, not more consoles--they're trying to sell the 2DS to people instead of a 3DS, not trying to sell everyone both. :P

I am probably getting one, I really love it. o: I, like, NEVER use 3D. I've been looking for a 3DS to play Y on and be able to trade between X and Y, but the 2DS is cheaper, so I'm most likely getting one of these if I can score one on the release date.
When I do use 3D, it's for epic moments, like maybe when Xerneas gallops toward the player or Yveltal lands in front of the player. Though, I'll probably do all of my 3D experimenting with X. xD
I don't really mind the non-folding element, it's like a tablet. I don't really see that as a big deal...My 3DS XL, which closes, is scratched horridly, and I always keep it in its case when I'm not playing it. xD As a kid, I couldn't tell you how many DS consoles my brother and I went through by ripping/breaking the top-screen hinges, meaning the top screen tore off or wouldn't stay up. :I
I think this was a good move from Nintendo. Parents won't be too concerned with their kid turning on the 3D without permission, and since it's being released with X and Y, while Pokemon-loving kids can play the newest games if their parents wouldn't allow them a 3DS. This console was most likely developed for worried parents and their young children's undeveloped eyes, but hey, seems to have attracted some adults as well. ;)

Here's some of the reasons why I don't like this and hope this is just like, not continuing.
-It doesn't fold, meaning that the outside doesn't give protection (Even if it's just a little bit).
-The circle pad's location is a little awkward. I mean, it's literally right next to the top screen!
-It doesn't look too compact unless you put it in the bag thing.
-Why two colors? (This is just nitpicking, so ignore this one. xD)
-You're kind of holding it from the top, which is a little weird and might be awkward for some...
Also, the back of it looks uneven, sort of bringing out my OCD. xD It comes out, but then it just gets thinner as you look down. Then there's sleep mode, where with the 3DS, DSi, and DS, you could close the system and have it go into sleep mode, but what about with the 2DS?

I mentioned this to a friend and he mentioned that you can put 3DS games in sleep mode by pressing the Home button. But if you're just playing a DS game, then the software is cancelled, so I still have this same question.

I don't think so. It has already received massive flack since Nintendo's announcement. You honestly think that most parents would know anything about firmware for the 3DS? Christ...
I think that if the 2DS was going to be used to recover from any financial mistakes, then it'd be released AFTER X and Y was released. That way consumers have more time to spend more money on a 3DS that they think they'll need.

If plunking down almost 200 dollars for self-trading is his prerogative, whatever.

I'm sorry, but at what point does consumer responsibility come in? The firmware update would automatically readjust the settings to the safety mode, and only authorized owners would be able to reset it. It would be simple, free, and solve the issue of underage 3D use.

I never said Nintendo was particularly bright. If they were, they would have never produced the 3DS. Why? Because nobody wants 3D. 3D televisions sold horribly, just like the 3DS. I mean the 3DS sold at a loss even after its considerable price reduction. With the 2DS, they are hoping to make up for the loss. I see that they will release more handhelds along the 2D line with minor improvements that could have been implemented the first time around, solely to make a few extra bucks off their horrible investment.

I certainly believe there are better alternatives, and I think, yes, the 2DS was probably for profit. I know people hate it, and I don't know why. :\ Most of them ignorant about why the design was chosen, the purpose of the console, why Nintendo chose this (other than profit), etc I assume.
Isn't it true that you can reset your 3DS to factory setting, deleting the update? This is really the only sure-fire way I can think of right now. As a parent raised in the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc, I would have no idea what a firmware was. xD Most older people aren't very tech-savvy.
I like the 2DS though, especially the two-color thing (especially that red and white). If I can't find a used, good condition 3DS cheaper than a new 2DS, then I'll get a 2DS. I can go without using the 3D for epic moments, I survived when in HG when Ho-Oh flew in epically. xD
GameStop's refurbished 3DSs are actually the same price of a new 3DS, if not higher. o_o My parents won't chip in $40 so I can have $160 for a 3DS. I'm already having trouble saving for X and Y, the official guide, and a Fennekin plush as it is (All costing about $100 of my $120 ;__;), so I haven't the slightest idea how I'm going to be getting another system. My options are a 2DS, or if my parents feel willing, I might get a 3DS. If I can get a 3DS, I certainly will, if not, a 2DS is just as good in my eyes. c:

DOUBLE POSTING IM REPORTING U loljk
But, all the way down there? When the buttons and circle pad is up there? So, you hold it from the top, having the bottom hang a little, and the sleep button is on the bottom? It just seems more and more awkward. The only reason I'd get one is if they release a Pokemon 2DS. xD Especially like the gold Charizard theme they never released outside of Japan. Jerks.

ugh u mean i hav 2 shut the 3ds to put it in 2 sleep mode wont my fingers get caught ill hav 2 move them that is so awkward
Honestly, I'd say the lack of a clamshell design makes it great for their intended consumer, which is kids. I cannot begin to tell you how many of my DS had to be replaced because some little kid snapped the lid. :C The button placement is pretty awkward, though. But, hey, kids are pretty conformist when it comes to technology and if it means more peeps get to give me streetpasses then by all means.

I preordered my blue 2DS today. The 3D effect gives me a headache and I don't find the 3DS XL to be very comfortable. When I look at the 2DS button/d-pad positioning it looks much more comfortable. I also like that it has the original screen size as the larger screens on the XL make the graphics look pixelated.

Lol design looks fugly. I'll stick my my 3DS, and save my cash for something worthwhile...like food! (lol kidding) but seriously, no way to protect the screen now, it's not foldable.

And the nightmare of the return of Game Boy/Color/Advance returns yet again.

Its not so much a nightmare, Arceus. The thing was made for a younger audience which really fits in well with Nintendos marketing to families. Sure its design is ugly and bulky but it seems like it was built to hold up against careless kids who drop stuff, step on stuff and general just destroy anything they can get there hands on.
Plus its much cheaper than the 3ds which also give people on a budget a chance to play the newer 3d games !

My little brother got himself a 2DS to go along with his copy of X, and he seems to like it just fine. I got to play around with it a little myself and it's not as bad as it looks to be. That may be because it's a Pokémon game, but yeah. It seems to be good for its price up to this point.
