DRAWN ART

Welcome to the Drawn Art section of PXFIRE Season 2! I hope this will be a fun event for everyone to join in regardless of whether you consider yourself an artist or not! Remember, you can earn a lot of points just for participating!

Rules
1. The artwork must be created by you.
2. The artwork must be created this week specifically for the event. You can’t submit old pieces.
3. Your artwork must be appropriate for the forum.
4. You can enter artwork in any format you like as long as it is drawn. This includes traditional pencil, paint, watercolour etc. or digital drawings.

Judging
Judging will be performed by me based on the following criteria!

Technique (5 points): Does the shading look correct? Do the chosen colours go well together? Is everything in proportion? etc.
Theme (5 points): 5 points for matching the theme of the week!
Creativity (5 points): How does your artwork stand out? It could be the technique used, the thing you chose to draw or how you creatively addressed the theme!
Execution (5 points): How well does everything go together? The feeling of the artwork overall.

Based on the number of points you receive from the criteria above, you will receive proportional points for your PXFIRE team! Remember everyone who joins in will receive some points for their team, so have a go!

Week 4 Theme: ITEMS!
Items are an important aspect of the Pokemon world that are often overlooked! Your task this week is to feature an item. It can be any item from any Pokemon game, anime, etc. The item should be the main focus of the artwork, but to get maximum points, you should feature it creatively! Maybe it’s in an interesting location or being used by a person or Pokemon?! This where your creativity comes in! It’s up to you!

Week 6 Theme: A Memory
This week’s theme is more abstract, giving you the chance to draw pretty much anything you like! This week I want to see a Pokemon-related memory come to life. It could be a special moment from the games or anime, a Pokemon-related moment you experienced while playing or in real life, a Pokemon experiencing a memory or an item, object or location to do with a memory! There are endless possibilities! To get full points for this theme, please include a description explaining the memory you have depicted and the image must match the explanation.

Wouldn't digital drawn art be graphic art? What's the difference?

I could be mistaken but graphic is more like designing signature banners and such.

I could be mistaken but graphic is more like designing signature banners and such. Pokemon Trainer Sarah Can you confirm? Because the Graphic Art section looks like any digital art.

In previous WAR/PXFIRE's drawn art just meant you had to do things as if you were just using traditional art tools. You could draw in photoshop and such, but you weren't allowed to use any tools or effects that you can only create using digital tools. Like perfect gradients, blends/blurs,or copy pasting backgrounds.

Yes, Morzone is correct. However since I didn't specify, for this week, using additional tools like gradients is fine. No copy pasting anything though. As long as the finished product is a drawing. Graphic art doesn't usually involve any drawing, it's just putting things together.

Is color required?

Is color required?

No, you don't have to use colour. :) You should try and do some shading though.

Notes: This was fairly rushed, so it could have been a lot better but oh well. The item focus is a poké doll and the drawing is of a cleffa who has lost her family, and the only remaining tie she has left is this simple doll that resembles her kind.

Notes: I couldn't do a digitally drawn entry because I don't have my drawing tablet ;-; I decided to do something more fun and experimental instead so I did a pokeball filled with doodles of items and added a little bit of artsy watercolour too. The picture doesn't do it justice and i'm not sure if it worked well because I did rush it a bit but here it is. Can you name all of the items in there. Here's a hint. They all start with A. :P

WEEK 4 SCORES!

Noblejanobii

Technique: 3/5
Theme: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Execution: 4/5
TOTAL 17/20
Points: 16

Comment: Great item choice! I love how you can see the shadows receding. What a cool idea! I like the effects on the Furret and that the item is front and centre! Since the item doesn’t have an official artwork, it must have been tough to come up with something brand new, so full marks for creativity. I enjoyed the textures and shading as well. If I had to pick on something, I’d say the Furret could be a bit more defined. Well done!

Comment: Aww how adorable! I love what you did with the theme. Very creative. Your lines and colouring/shading etc. are lovely! I like the stitches on the Pokedoll. I struggled to make out the background a bit, but when I turned the brightness up, it was a pleasant surprise to see the creepy looking forest! But I think it could have been a tiny bit lighter. *trying to nitpick to differentiate entries* Great work!

Execution: 3/5

Points: 13

Comment: Ooh cool idea! The colouring looks great! It doesn’t work the best with the outlines though, cos now you have white space between the outline and colours. So it might have been a good idea to go around manually closer to the edges or maybe even do lineart digitally over your drawing?! That and lack of shading took down your technique score. The choice scarf itself looks cute and I like how it’s blowing in the wind. I can picture the Bellossom dancing! It’s a cool choice of Pokemon but I think it could have been shown in a more creative pose different from Bellossoms’s standard one. Maybe it could have been attacking or something to show off use of the scarf?! Overall great job!

Comment: Ooh how creative! It’s nice to see something way different! I like that you choose items starting with A as well XD I struggled for a min to figure some of them out! Great job drawing all those different items, they all look really good! I love watercolours and I like what you were going for, but it looks a tiny bit messy or unfinished for some reason. Maybe it’s the dark red in the middle not being even up to the lines, but I find it distracting somehow. Other than though, a really cool idea and I love what you did! Nice work!

Comment: Ooh beautiful colours! I love the shading and highlights as well. Everything looks amazing! I kinda feel like the balloon looks a bit flat compared to the Salandit though?! And that kind of makes it blend into the background more and look less like the focus of the piece. Everything is beautiful though, love that fire! Great job!

Comment: Ooh what a cool item choice. I can’t help but wanna see what it’s doing to that poor computer though! I like the detail of the warning sign in the corner. Your shading is beautiful and I love the grayscale. The keys on the keyboard look a little crooked at the top so I am nitpicking that but other than that, I am super impressed with how realistic everything looks, especially the cable between them and the disk itself. Great work!

Title of entry: Spirits of Metal and Fire
Notes: With almost no good cold climates in the tropical alola region, Snorunts and their evolutions instead inhabited rocky, often fiery mountains and stone canyons. Those that developed harder, more metallic coats survived best.

Alolan Sorunt:
- The Metal Hat pokemon, Alolan Snorunts developed a hard metal shell to protect themselves from harsh rocky environments. It is said their spike can break through even the toughest of boulders when a snorunt gets up to speed.
- Type: Steel
- Locations available for capture: Blush Mountain, Poni Canyon.
- Evolves into:
- Alolan Glalie - lvl 40
- Alolan Frosslass - Fire Stone

Alolan Glalie:
- The Spiked Ball pokemon, Alolan Glalie searches for ideal stones and metals to sharpen its spikes on. The sharper their spike, the more intimidating they are to potential predators and prey. The metal plates that cover its body can come in many different variations.
- Type: Steel
- Locations available for capture: Poni Canyon
- Evolves from Alolan Snorunt at lvl 40

Alolan Frosslas:
- The Fire Spirit pokemon, the flames covering Alolan Frosslass' body can burn up to 1,000 degrees C when angered. It is unknown if their is a physical body beneath its flames, but rumors have it that those who die from or near to an active volcano are reborn as an alolan Frosslass.
- Type: Fire, Steel
- Locations available for Capture: N/A
- Evolves from Alolan Snorunt Using a Fire Stone

Title of entry: Child of Madame Pele.
Notes: Taking rocks away from lava fields in Hawaii is frowned upon for a lot of reasons. For one thing, it's illegal to remove minerals from national parks in the United States. For another, a lot of people are under the impression that taking these stones will anger Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes. While this isn't really mentioned in Hawaiian lore that I could find (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) and seems to just be an urban legend, I read a really interesting one about Pele being angry about the rocks being taken because they're her children. Sableye that live in Alola tend to live around Wela Volcano Park; those that do are shape by their diet of igneous rock and ash, as well as their fiery environs. They take on a Ghost/Rock typing, though the bands of energy on their arms and legs do a good job of mimicking lava. They're actually cool and smooth to the touch, much like the rocks they eat. Most of them have the abilities Keen Eye or Stall like their mainland cousins, but some have the Cursed Body ability - carrying the wrath of Pele wherever they go.

Title of entry: Maui's Fox
Notes: Every religion and mythology has a trickster. It's well known that in Japan, the kitsune share this role with many others, resulting in Zoroark and Zorua being viewed as illusion wielding foxes that trick others for fun. In Polynesian legends, this role falls to Maui. Using his mighty hook, he performed a variety of tricks including making the days longer, creating coconuts, and more. Alolan Zoroark are generally only found on Poni Island. Legend states that they were brought with Zorua to Alola by those traveling by sea. Unused to the environment, the foxes had a difficult time capturing prey and Tapu Fini took pity on them. Hearing their plight, she gifted the zoroarks with hooks made from her own shell. Thus, they have taken on the dark/water typing. They are fierce swimmer, able to accurately ensnare prey with their mighty hooks at the end of their manes. Still, this does not stop their trickery, with their new found aquatic abilities now expanding their target area to both land and sea.

Title of entry: Alolan Spinda
Notes: Spinda were introduced to Alola from Hoenn a long time ago. In Hoenn, the spinda generally make their homes around the volcanic areas of Route 113. In Alola, the spinda instead migrated to the beach shores of Melemele Island. Seeing the local water-types playing with the humans in the sea inspired the spinda to learn how to swim, and over much time, they evolved to glide through water as a water-type does and cloak themselves with sand and seaweed to help disguise them from predators such as toxapex. The one component of their physicality that remained was their inconsistent placement of their face spots, which remains unique to each spinda.

They lost their normal typing and gained water/grass types. As well as retaining Own Tempo, Alolan Spinda can also have the Hydration ability.

Title: The Scourge of Kalos
Notes: Despite being a relatively recent introduction to the Alola region compared to other Pokemon, Skiddo and Gogoat adapted quickly to the environment, and the frequent volcanic activity combined with the abundant vegetation to graze on has made them shed their old grassy coats in favor of firey ones. Sadly, Alolan Skiddo and Gogoat are something of a pest in many areas, consuming vegetation in excess and leaving many native species without a food source.

Comment: Ooh I love these! I really enjoyed the Dex entries you included. They’re definitely a great fit for Alola and totally make sense. I could see these being in the games! The colouring looks a bit rough in places but that could just be your scanner. The shading looks a bit off like on Glalie’s spikes. It’s hard to tell what direction the light would be coming from. Comment: Cool idea! I recently watched Moana so I actually know this one. XD Zoroark seems like a great choice for this too. Good job drawing without lineart, I find it really tough. Some parts could be a bit better defined though, like the hands. I really like the eye though! The addition of whiskers and fins was smart, but it took me a second to realise it was a fin on its arm. I think the colouring looks better this time, well done :) There are still some white spots but they’re not as noticeable. Good job trying your hand at shading! The pose looks kinda familiar to me which is fine. *seen a lot of Bulbasaur art*. Bulbasaur looks a little bit short or pudgy like it’s kinda missing a belly section? Title of entry: Dimensional Scream
Notes: The theme of this week being Memory immediately brought this scene from the Mystery Dungeon games to mind. I know the Dimensional Scream is technically more of a time vision ability, but the way the scene is presented certainly gives off a "lost memories" vibe, especially how the place where this specific Scream occurs being one that the protagonist feels familiarity with. Also, I drew the protagonist as a Vulpix because that's what I played as in Explorers of Sky.

We decided as motivation, we'd eventually make a picturelocke out of it with our characters being fusions of our catches. Notes: The Final battle with Darkrai in Pokemon ranger: Shadows of Almia. Today it's really easy for me to beat, but back when I first played it this was one of my favorite final boss battles in all the games and definitely my favorite pokemon ranger game. Unfortunately I ran out of time and only didn't finish it, but this is what I have. If you're wondering why the light pellets are going away rather than toward Darkrai, the first attempt to "capture" darkrai, he's closed his heart and forces the lights away so nothing you do gets through to him.

I hope I'm not too late!

I'm titling this one 'Glory Days' - the theme is reminiscing on past victories and friendships. Gardy looks back on the early days of the journey, memorialized and surrounded by the trappings of victory.

Gardevoir isn't quite in the same plane as the table, and the shadows didn't quite turn out the way I wanted, but I'm pretty new to drawing so I'm cool with it.

Comment: Oooh wow! This is a cool idea. It's interesting how memorable overall mystery dungeon is! I think you did a great job of capturing this moment. Vulpix's expression is great. I love the colouring of the eyes. And the shading and highlights overall are really well done. The scarf is beautiful too and so lifelike! Great work, thanks for sharing!

Title of entry: Soul Link
Notes: My best friend and I started a randomized soullinkfitlocke of Pokémon Black and White 2 this past January to meet our goal or getting into shape. We decided as motivation, we'd eventually make a picturelocke out of it with our characters being fusions of our catches. It's by far one of my favorite memories as I've really gotten close to Peaches through this game and while we haven't been playing it much recently, I know we're both eager to get back at it when school starts back up.

Comment: Aww this is such a nice memory. And a cool idea to fuse your Pokemon catches together! My favourite part of this image is probably the Metang. It's really cute and well done and the shading looks great! The fused Pokemon is also pretty interesting. At first glance I thought it was a new Pokemon I hadn't seen xD I like the details you added to the desk set ups! The angles are a little off and I found the soft shading onTyphlosion kind of distracting as the rest looks like hard shading... But aside from that you did a great job! Well done!

Title of entry: Undefeatable
Notes: When I was a kid playing on my Gameboy and Pokemon Blue, the oddish that the lass has in Mt. Moon, for some reason, was terrifying. It had absorb, which destroyed my squirtle. For some reason, it's always just stuck in my mind that this oddish is super powerful. XD I know it stems from my perspective as a kid and my underdeveloped sense of strategy, but the memory of this oddish being incredibly tough is very real. Go, squirtle, go!!!

Comment: Haha Xanthe, that's an adorable memory! I love that evil looking oddish! It actually looks pretty scary xD Squirtle looks really good, great expression and pose! Maybe the background could emphasise that it's moving toward oddish or something a bit more, since there is a bit of empty space there. I love your nice smooth lines and I especially love the shading and how it incorporates different colours. It's one of my favourite techniques to see. Those leaves on oddish look really nice! Great job!

Title of entry: The Shadow in Almia
Notes: The Final battle with Darkrai in Pokemon ranger: Shadows of Almia. Today it's really easy for me to beat, but back when I first played it this was one of my favorite final boss battles in all the games and definitely my favorite pokemon ranger game. Unfortunately I ran out of time and only didn't finish it, but this is what I have. If you're wondering why the light pellets are going away rather than toward Darkrai, the first attempt to "capture" darkrai, he's closed his heart and forces the lights away so nothing you do gets through to him.

Comment: I loved Ranger! Such great games. Nice choice! Darkrai itself looks really good. There something about the closer hand that seems a bit off, like maybe the top finger should be the lightest, not the darkest shade? I could be wrong though, because of the capture stylus light. Shading black send like it's pretty difficult, you did a good job. I also really like how you drew the capture stylus thing. For the background, the angles of the crystals look a bit strange though I don't think there's anything technically wrong with them, maybe some shading would help. Overall great job considering you didnt finish it! It still looks pretty much done.

Comment: What a nice idea! I really like the details of all the items on the table, especially the picture. I think you did a great job on the shading on the ground and on the table. They really stand out nicely. But Gardevoir's shading is a bit light so it makes it look kinda flat compared to the table. You did a great job on the angle of Gardevoir's pose though! You did a really great job, I wouldn't have thought you were new to drawing! I really like the way you addressed the theme!

Thank you so much to everyone who entered! It was really nice to see how talented you all are! I hope you'll all keep drawing and sharing it with us :)

Apologies for the delay this week, I have been judging at work since I still don't have internet at my house, but this week was crazy busy so I ended up having to do the final week on my phone... Thanks for your patience!

Yeah, the base of the crystal is supposed to be this kind of mass of stubby and wide crystals that make the base look larger but by the time I got my hands on Ranger game to actually check -which I some how miraculously found after it'd been missing for so long- It was either keep re-drawing the crystal base or give the picture a proper background. As for the claw it look like I didn't properly outline that upper finger, which is probably why it looks lighter. I did miss a few spots when I was rush outlining.
