THE METAL LEGION
Years ago on PE2k, there was a Heavy Metal club designed with the simple goal: being a better club than We Love Music, because it was a terrible club filled with a bunch of false, idiotic people who couldn't tell the difference between Thrash Metal and Deathcore; people who actually thought Synyster Gates was a better guitarist than Jason Becker or Marty Friedman. We succeeded in that goal.
Now we're back to kick *** and chew bubblegum, but we're all out of bubblegum.
RULES AND HOW TO JOIN
The rules are simple. Don't suck.
Joining is also simple. Tell us your top 5 or more metal bands and favorite genres. I'll decide if you are worth having.

I have been way out of the loop with metal. Am I reading right that Burzum is turning into an Electronic band (This is me not knowing a lot about Burzum, anyways.)? Also that Opeth's coming album is going lean more towards hard rock than Death Metal?

Mm. Their latest wasn't amazing. I preferred it after I heard it live though.
I generally try to stay away from Varg news but I think he tried to distance himself from metal quite a while ago because he's a nonsensical twit.

Varg's going back to his dungeon synth **** that only deaf retards liked. Opeth will probably continue their garbage they started with Heritage, which was just sucking off a bunch of old Prog Rock bands Akerfeldt had a stiffy for.
On another note, good bands worth listening to for anyone who hasn't: Cult of Fire (atmospheric black) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_D7goM4uE4), Mion's Hill (black/thrash) (http://mionshill.bandcamp.com/), Slutvomit (black/thrash) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-FxlYTw0UA), Demon Lung (traditional doom) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoCQPWRnLZk).

Mainstream metal is still metal, sir. Even Metallica. Just try not to talk about Slipknot, Bullet for my Valentine, or Avenged Sevenfold a whole lot.
Or at all.. if possible.

Well I start browsing the interwebs. More specifically Wikipedia (Best source in the world for information!). Apparently Behemoth, Blind Guardian, Sonata Arctica, and surprisingly enough, Judas Priest are coming out with records in the near future. There are a couple others on that list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_in_heavy_metal_music). Some I prefer not to name. But really? Judas Priest? I assumed Epitaph World would be the final tour ever. I mean, I'll go see them when they tour because it's been on my to do list for a few years. But I feel like Rob Halford is a little past his prime. Credit where it's due, just past 62 and still kicking is admirable. I guess the same could be said for Ozzy and Sabbath. But I just.. feel skeptical about it. Dio did it great and he was 67 years old. Suppose it's a matter of perspective. Any insight on Priest doing another album and tour?
Back to the original question, I am kind of excited for some of these bands to come out with new stuff. I'm going to be on a Metal kick for the duration of 2014, for sure.

Sanctus, you're under review and debate about being accepted.
Andrew, you're accepted, but only so you shut up and leave me alone about accepting you.
Dragon Master, Blue Oyster Cult I will only half recognize as a metal band, only because they were one of the bands to give strong influence to what would become proper Heavy Metal as we know it. I do not recognize Evanescence as Metal, because they aren't. They're gothic rock and alternative, but not metal. So you're not accepted on those grounds. Feel free to try again in the future.

Metallica debuted a new song during one of their tours. Thought I might get some opinions. Bear in mind that there isn't a clean audio version of this song to my knowledge. Just little clips people shot with their iPhones.

Super late to respond, but I tell you what, Dragon Master. Sure, you're accepted. I don't really think of Led Zeppelin as Metal. They're "early Metal," in the sense they helped pioneer the genre. But today they're just Classic Rock or Hard Rock. But, what hell, I'll accept you.
Also, Bulb, I don't really have much positive about Volume 8. I don't care for anything Post-Belladonna in Anthrax.

I don't honestly know if you'll like them, but I found this late 70's metal band that was probably 10 years ahead of their time in terms of heaviness. The band is Supernaut, and they have one album, Keeper Of The Keys.

I'm sure Red won't mind having you as a part of the legion, dude. So consider yourself in until Red says otherwise. But like I said, I doubt he would.
Bulbasaur: It took me a minute to find the Supernaut you were talking about, When I initially searched, all I got was some Glam Rock band and I was like "This isn't metal at all."
So they only had one album? That's unfortunate.

As for a top 10, I have nothing. I'm not as committed to metal as I was 2+ years ago. But, I have a list of ones I've listened to, and ones I want to hear.
Listened to:
Iron Maiden
Blind Guardian
Sirenia
Want to listen to and will.. probably before the week is out because I'm on a Metal kick lately (and didn't know they had albums out):
Korpiklaani
Saxon
Ensiferum
Napalm Death
Venom
Ones I'll listen to to make it 10 (because I at least heard these bands and like what I've heard):
Enslaved
Nightwish

Death Magnetic really killed Metallica for me. I listened to HWTSD the single, and while it sounded good, it really just sounded like a bunch of old guys trying to sound like Metallica. I just couldn't bring myself to love it like I did before. However, if you're standing by it, I'll probably rent it from the library or something. xD
I did listen to the new Sirenia, Blind Guardian, and Ensiferum albums. Sirenia has really been an up and down band for me since hearing the 13th Floor which made me fall in love with the band and that Metal genre. Each album seems to have good and bad songs on it, but none that I could really latch onto and heavily favor. But I guess Perils of the Deep Blue got them some US fame, so it can't be all bad. With that said, I've been out of the metal loop of late, but I'll certainly look into some old favorites to see what they're putting out.
I know Alestorm is about to drop a new album. 3 years in the making, it better be damn good. Makes me sad that Finntroll won't even be looking for a new drummer to put out a new album. At least, to my knowledge. Finntroll is so good. They need a new drummer/album soon. I'm iffy on the new Immortal. I'm so used to hearing Abbath on vocals, that I dunno how I'll feel with someone else behind the mic. I'll still check it out, because new vocalists aren't always a bad thing.
