I'm starting another contest because I can :P


๑ Overview ๑

Every week, ten contestants participate in a series of challenges that I give. The worst performing contestant after each challenge will be eliminated. For the first two challenges, four of the worst performing contestants will be cut. Single elimination rounds begin by Challenge 3. Those who fail to turn in their entries are disqualified.

The top three last users standing will be given trophies.

The challenges will consist of four random Pokemon sprites I will post from a random generator. Your goal is to fuse them together into one sprite. And send them to ME THROUGH A PRIVATE MESSAGE!

However, I'll be giving a twist. These twists can include themes, holidays, or a certain type of spriting style. Big points are given to those who can take advantage of the twist to its greatest value within the sprite. So be on guard so what I may throw at you!


๑ Judging ๑

Judges: Me, Intel, and {none}

Three judges (including me) will be grading based on creativity, skill, and originality. A number out of ten (the average of our three scores out of ten) will be presented to you during judging day after a weekly challenge.

All three of us will be offering commentary to why we gave you that score. We'll have the typical "first place to last place" order in one post. And at the bottom of the page, I'll be declaring an official announcement of who is eliminated for that week.

Forms to be a judge are available below. Those who apply must post three quality sprites that show their best work. I'll decide then.

Yeah it has been slightly irritating me on why we don't have more people. I wish spriting was bigger here. It somewhat makes me disappointed :( I even posted an announcement not long ago encouraging people to join. I'll start the contest once two to three more people sign up. Until then we have to wait, I'll try making more members aware of this thread's existence.

Mkay. :] I think, I dunno...it seems people these days aren't as interested in spriting and art in general as they used to be. Same with writing stories. Back when Pe2k still existed and was active a few years ago, the sprite section was filled to the brim with spriters who posted and sprited daily, and the story section introduced a new story every few days, which was amazing. But now if people go there and post things, it's rare that things will get read or critiqued, which is sad. :c Then again, we don't have that many active members so I suppose it's just a lack of traffic at this point.

Kinda reminds me of Pokestadium. Go there about 5 months back and the pokecreator would be full to the brim with new creations. Now all it takes to get #1 weekly is 20 or 30 likes, which is kinda pathetic. Don't ask me how Johan feels now that his site is kind of a dead website. Hardly anyone ever even goes there anymore.

I would join if I were good at spriting, however, the only thing I can do remotely close is just recoloring things. I haven't delved into spriting for years.

I hope more people join this though! I was looking at this a couple of days ago! It looks like a lot of fun! :)

Actually is it at all possible we don't start before tomorrow? I'm going to be gone in like an hour until around noon tomorrow, so I cant participate if it starts today.

Even if the contest starts tomorrow, a reasonable due date will be given in which entries will be due. Remember, it could take a fair amount of time for contestants to not only fabricate their unique creations, but for Bisharp and I to judge and decide on point distribution.

So even if you had a day late start, you should have a reasonable amount of time to submit your entry. The most common deadline is a week after the announced round, but it is all up to what pace Bisharp wants the contest to go.

Making high quality sprites do take a solid amount of time, Bisharp knows that and so he wouldn't give a reduced amount of time for submissions. Unless you were being tested on sprite making efficiency, you should have some time in your own spare time to work on your sprite. ^^ As Dawn would say, there is "no need to worry!"

Stunfisk, Seviper, Tyrantrum, and Drowzee are the four Pokemon you all are going to fuse in one creation to be judged.

The Twist: The creation must have reference to Valentine's Day in any way. So be creative!

All entries are due on February 8th, 2014 before midnight.

Are you allowed to use pokesho sprites?

Using Pokesho sprites give you a bit of an advantage due to their enhanced details when compared to the regular game sprites, so I would highly recommend not using them. Just use the regular Pokemon game sprites for the given Pokemon, except Tyrantrum, in which you have to use the sprite Bisharp provided.

Yes, you guys can scratch whatever you feel necessary. Just remember this is a fusion, so fuse using your skills, and do some scratching here and there to trim up the sprite and give it a Valentine's Day feel. ;)

If you completed your entry just send it to both Bisharp and I and we will discuss in private messaging about the sprite's final score etc. Expect feedback from both of us as well. ^^

If I'm not mistaken, two people dropped out of that round and another didn't submit an entry due to the difficulty. My sprite was difficult to work with, but not everyone has the same spriting skills.

Though a fusion of four +a little love shouldn't be too difficult. :/ You guys had a decent amount of time as well. Palkia has an excuse though that I deeply understand.

Also Suicune, you did submit your entry to Bisharp, but not to me. Since I only have 3 submissions sent. Remember, your submission could be late if isn't sent to me as well. <.<

I can appreciate that, but I can't appreciate getting offended when a few people forget to submit. xD To be honest I wish we had more spriters, but the fact is that PXR's spriting section has never been big. =/ Which sucks.

I will speak in purple from now on. Even though my soul desires Cyan because, well.... my iris' find the blue color to be more radiant than "blinding."

Lol PS was a sprite database based (jynx lol) community. So its not surprising for there to be such a different kind of feel about spriting contests here when compared to PS. There were literal rules and etiquette for spriting on the forum (via the PC) and since most of the contests were done by PC mods, they were taken pretty seriously. Bishy over here was a PC mod, so it is natural for him to take this seriously. I was one as well, but I usually kept to myself and did my work like a ninja. Well.... I got off topic... <.<

Anyways, just get your entries in soon, and I find it kind of hilarious yet ironic how everyone has used the same base Pokemon so far. xD

Cyan (which isn't light blue. There's a difference) is a wonderful color, which I used to use on another forum, but that one was black. Extremely light colors and white backgrounds just don't mix...

I need a new favorite color or something.

Not to be extremely off topic and all, but my forum skin is the Magic of Darkrai. xD So that is why the light blue, since its not cyan to you apparently, didn't effect my eyes.

No, no, that is cyan. That's what I was saying, I was just noting the difference... For some reason or another. Cyan is a perfect mix of blue and green with no red, and light blue is just blue that's lighter than regular blue.

Hey everyone, the entries have all gotten in. And those three who haven't submitted their creations are sadly disqualified.

RULE CHANGE!!! So after much thinking, I don't think its fair to have a competition determined by dropouts, so instead each of you will have a set score based on each creation you have made per challenge. As the competition progresses the points you have earned out of ten will continue to add up per entry you have made as this contest progresses. Each week, those participants with the lowest combined score will be eliminated.

BBlade's Response: The color pallet looks relatively nice, but the red in the hearts looks too bright compared to the other colors. The lack of black outline bothers me; all pokemon sprites should have at least some form of back outline within the shadow. Black outline in darker-shaded areas are a standard part of the art-style in pokemon sprites, add it in next time.

Intel's Response: To be honest, I really liked your sprite! You did do a bit of a similar fusion as everyone else, but I really liked the little scratch touches you did on your own. The coloring of the ears and the scratched hearts were very nice touches. ^^

BBlade's Response: I'm not sure whether the pink and brown contrast in a good way or a bad way, but it works. I'm not sure what is going on with the stunfisk fin as a hat, but it looks alright. There could be worse headpieces to choose from. This sprite is solid, stay consistent this way :)

Intel's Response: I like how you used stunfisk's parts as a little hat for your sprite. It looks cute, but not necessarily valentine's day related. It's kind of a basic design as well, but it was done fairly well.

BBlade's Response: The colors clash too much a bit. Toning down the brightness of the hot pink would do wonders by decreasing the saturation of the color (blending it in with gray more, works). I would also expect more creativity from when it comes to spriting from a PS user like you, so adding parts to make it easier won't necessarily give you a free pass in my judging.

Intel's Response: Although you did provide two different gender versions, your sprite seems like a pretty basic fusion. Colors alone don't give off a valentine's essence. A bit of scratching here and there and more creativity could have greatly increased your score. I really liked your description though. Sadly, that wasn't necessarily required for this contest.

BBlade's Response: I found it cute how you chose to do a cupid by adding the tyrantrum fluff to the back of drowzee for wings. Hardly any seviper is seen, and this sprite almost looks like a simple recolor. The bottom half was hardly worked on too. EDIT MORE! The gray also doesn't go well with the pink very much, but it isn't too bad. I don't get what is going on with the incoherent "floating red tail" in the back of the sprite.

Intel's Response: I really like how you made Tyrantrum's parts into wings and stunfisk's as a hat, but everything else just seemed really lacking. You chose a really poor color palette and I'm not quite sure what is exactly going on with the tail and the random line at the top connecting to the hat. I feel like you spend most of the time on the top half of the sprite, since the bottom is what is my main concern. x-x

BBlade's Response: This looks like a child's nightmare. The psycho face through the eyes and the teeth don't help either. The colors look okay together, but the purple seems to be thrown in without much thought. The face looks deformed by the oddly shaped purple mask (phantom of the opera reference? I'd be scared to see that creature's face without the mask :( ) This sprite seems to connect to Halloween more than Valentine's Day.

Intel's Response: Your sprite is good without a doubt, but it has absolutely no reference towards valentines day!! X.X It looks like some crazed mutation that would hunt me down and kill me. You even gave it a crazy eye! xD If this was a ferocious pokemon fusion contest you would win for sure, but a good sprite alone can't win. Next time follow the theme of the round ok? =p

BBlade's Response: The head looks too big and pear-shaped. I also assume you used seviper colors because I bet the parts were too difficult for you to use within the sprite. A lot of my past competitors have tried to pull fast ones on me by doing that, but it doesn't work. Use SOME body parts of each of the four pokemon I give you, trying to use the original sprite colors is uncreative and lazy.

The valentine's day is also pretty lacking. "Oh I'll just add a purple heart to make it work, he'll also think I'll be using seviper by putting in the colors." Don't sacrifice your work with that type of thinking! Add at least a seviper eye to replace the drowzee one; and add some pink and red color in the mix to make the theme work!

Intel's response: I feel really bad giving that rating, but hear me out. The head for one, is really distorted and unnatural. I do not see any relevant seviper parts either. Although you did add a little purple heart, which was a good touch, the coloring of your sprite is very dark. Valentine's day is more of a loving holiday, so brighter and more vivid colors would have been a greater choice. What really struck me the most though was the feet. They lack shading and basic outlines. It made your sprite look unfinished to me, thus the score. :c

Intel's Response: I think you were the only contestant who didn't use Drowsee as a base, but since you knew that I can't give you creativity points. Your design was probably the most creative out of the bunch despite of its lethargic look. I do see a chocolate heart reference, so it fits the theme perfectly. I really liked how you used tyrantrum's parts and scratched a little details here and there. The only reason I didn't give you an 8 or higher is because I don't see enough seviper or hypno, even though you used them for the eyes and ears. You still did an excellent job overall.

I can't believe how many of us used Drowzee as base, Tyrantrum's legs and Seviper's tail. That was just shocking.

I'll take your advice on board next time, guys. I tried messing around with the pink, and if I'd have used the original shade, I think your eyes would have bled. :3

Looking forward to the next round! I just hope that I can do a better job with the theme this time. I edited the shading a little for the bottom half, and added the 'string, but that was as far as scratching went... Sorry. :(

If Speed was to compete, it would be ultimately up to Bisharp. I just said what I did because on PS, no matter what, no one else was allowed to compete once the contest started.

Like Lightning Dash mentioned, there WAS eliminations also he just refuted what he said in his last post about there being none however .-. I generalize the term "elimination" to include those who were disqualified along with the last place scorers to clarify.

Although letting a late member join goes against my policies in every way on running contests, I am here to encourage spriting among the PXR community after all. I'll let SpeedX join, but this is the last time this is going to happen.

Also, I'm going to give her an automatic last place score of being of again, being late (its not like a tenths of a point makes a difference this early in the competition :P). I also feel this a fair cost, because she didn't have to go through the pain of doing Challenge One.

Like I mentioned before, you can try scratching or use sprites from Deviantart (but for you may need to check for permission) if you are uncomfortable using the sprites I have given.

And I got the sixth generation sprites from Pokestadium in the sprites library, so yes, I'm 100% correct we have permission to use them; despite the fact they aren't official.

Hmm, this hypothesis seems to have a lot of evidence backing it; however, making an immediate conclusion with inconclusive data would be rash and unprofessional. While I appreciate your input, we must wait it out to see for ourselves!

In regards to this contest, I'm sorry about how it turned out. Ultimately Bisharp had the complete say in how the contest was to run, and with him being absent/busy it was difficult to put into action. I guess you guys can either compete in a new contest when its up, or if BB comes back, try to continue with this one again.
