Have you got ideas for stories that you just can't fully develop? Do you need a little bit of inspiration from other members? If so, then you're in the right place!
Welcome to the Story Ideas Lounge (we have cookies!)! Here you can discuss ideas for stories you have, and see how to improve them, with the help of other members. Basically, this is like the RP Café, only its Writing equivalent.
Rules:
1. Only constructive criticism. Try not to tell someone that their story is awful, or that they should give up on it immediately.
2. Be respectful. Very similar to the last point, don't disrespect people, or their ideas.
3. Have fun!
I'll kickstart things with an idea of mine;
I haven't fleshed it out much yet (it is still in the development stages), but I want to do a story that focusses on young love. I'd like to start it off as someone falling in love with a person way out of their league (or vice versa, with the out of the league person falling for the in their league one). As time goes on, their relationship would be put under scrutiny and pressure, which results in ordeals they'll have to overcome. Will it work out for them, or will there be too much water under the bridge for them to stay a couple?

STICKY-FYING! 8D
Sounds interesting! :) Do you have any idea what it could be that makes one of the persons "out of their leauge"? Are they just too popular, rich, fabulous? I actually think the idea of the person out of the league falling in love with the league one might be more interesting, because there could be a lot more you could explore there (and it's something out of the normal cliche, kind of).

My first sticky! That is, if my memory hasn't died recently... :3
I think I'm going to make the boy the one that's out of the girl's league. It's easier to get more stuff in that way, without portraying their friends as psychos, and words that can be used to describe female dogs. Names are still very hard to think of, though... I want to call the girl Amy Rose, just to see how many people get the reference. :D
I was thinking of going along the cliché lines as to why he's out of her league; he's popular, rich/spoiled, and not too bright (although I won't play on that last one very often). I thought that the girl could be very studious and only at school to learn, and not to make friends or have a social life. Then, she gets punished for something ridiculous by her teacher, and then she answers back, which makes him realise that she's not just a drab, study obsessed 'nerd' (for lack of a better word) who listens to anything and everything that teachers say without standing her ground. That's when he starts trying to befriend her, and it all develops from there.
That's probably the very basic description of what might happen in the first chapter. Is it sounding okay so far?
EDIT: I've had a HUGE brainstorm, and it was completely unintentional. Here is the latest on what I plan to add to the story:
The boy and the girl end up going out. Life gradually gets better for the girl, who is introduced to parties, and the joy that is binge drinking.
Their love life is getting spread around the school by practically every gossip. They're both being constantly asked all sorts of ridiculous questions, and this stresses the pair out. There is then a massive argument between the two at a party, which results in them breaking up. The girl walks home, crying her eyes out, and then gets home, where the situation doesn't get better...
As it turns out, her parents (who are going to be horrible, just a little heads-up) have left her, saying that she's a waste of time and space. Heartbroken and abandoned, there isn't long before social services end up taking her into foster care. The kids at the care home are pretty mean, and she ends up doing something that she shouldn't (drugs). Just as it is all about to go downhill, there is a beacon of hope for her.
I realised that drama would be better than soppy romance, but I don't know what to do next. I want her to be taken off somewhere, but I have no clue as to where.

O:! More people need to post here so that we may come up with more cool ideas for people! I was gonna say "UM, YOUR STORY IS AWFUL AND YOU SHOULD GIVE UP ON IT IMMEDIATELY." XDD But nah. x) JOKE'S OVER, ME.
Sounds like you have a good story structure which should provide entertainment for readers! Tell me, have you started writing it yet? To be honest, it's not my sort of story, but I'm sure other people will love it. :D
I REALLY want to get back into writing, as I just haven't done it in yonkles. So I'm really wanting to discuss story ideas with people--not for me, but to help them. Maybe if others talk about their ideas, it'll inspire me to work on my stories too. xD

I started writing it ages ago, and the story has changed so much it's practically unrecognisable; the beginning is mostly the same, but with new characters to work with the new plot. She still goes into care, but this time, she's with one of her friends from school who is a bully victim. That night, the other girl dies. It's a huge investigation to see who did it, involving the care home's 'manager' (my fave character out of them all :3), the protagonist (who kind of takes a lot of my personality traits), the bully, another kid (Alvin 2.0), and an actual detective.
Everyone is a suspect. I'll give you a random hint on who did it; a burger with metal in. And no, it's not the chef. Dun dun dun!
In the end, I'm torn; I want the kids to either end up as detectives or spies, with the care home's manager being a 'scout' for whatever agency they end up getting signed to.
And I'd love to see you write something, because you're awesome. :D
WE NEED MORE PEOPLE TO POST HERE! Kidnap them from other threads, if necessary. XD

Well.
Thanks to Char's Writing Prompts, I'm gonna create a thread for my one-shots / flash fics based on songs. You know, taking lyrics and turning them into stories, that kind of thing. I'm also hoping to do a thing where people request me to write something based on a song of their choice. This is all well and good, but I was also thinking about reviving one of my unfinished stories as well, seeing as I have so many of them, and it would be a waste not to continue at least one. See below spoiler for my five final unfinished ideas. However, knowing me, I will most likely end up focusing on one rather than the other by accident.
I'm definitely doing the short stories, but I'm wondering whether I should do one of my longer ones as well? If you tell me which one's interesting to you, I can elaborate a bit more.
• Four dead people try to solve their own murders
• Zombie apocalypse with a 6-year-old, a scientist who caused it, a survivor from another country and two relatively normal people
• Four detectives solving a crime in London that slowly escalates into something more
• Six people who can dream in a world where dreaming is outlawed
• Continuation of an old RP where dead people collect dead people for a living

I'd love to read them! It'd be fun trying to work out the songs, too. :)
The first one sounds like Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, and that was an amazing game. I'm hoping there would be more twists and turns than a spiral. :3
I vaguely remember that RP your last story would be about... Did it only last a little while? And we really need to reboot some of the old PS RPs to get a more active RP section. I'm thinking of doing Dimension Distortion II, because I miss RPing as Bones. XD

My memories of PS are really getting fuzzy, and it's been less than a year. XD
And honestly, I haven't played the game, I've only heard about it when I was browsing Ace Attorney related things because the same guy made the two.

Hooray, spies was the option I had more material for! :3 It only takes a girl being murdered for our protags to get the most epic job in the world.
And I'll go and read your some of your stuff now. I just finished the series of books that I've been reading on-and-off for two years.
Should we do something like a write-a-thon to get people into writing? It'd be like the sprite challenges you see where everyone is given a deadline to make a sprite, but people could be given something like two weeks to make a story. They could maybe win a profile badge thing. Just throwing suggestions out there.

Such a brave sacrifice; all she truly wanted was for her friend, the girl who bullied her and a guy from the care home she lived in to become spies. XD
Pokémon stories are usually really great, so I'll have to look into your ones. :) I had one in fanfiction.net called Civil Rivalry, but it's on hiatus. It was basically just me testing the waters, so yours will probably destroy mine. XD

Some of them have plot issues though, which is what's stopping me from writing them (as well as the fact that I simply haven't written anything in ages...) so I might want to bring some of them up. I think that if you end up reading The Arena, we could discuss that. Okay...
So I have this idea. There is this wolf Pokemon (Electrike) who fell in love (more of like, stalk) on a Skitty. On a stalking basis. When the Electrike sees the Skitty seeing (kinda like dating) another Pokemon, the Electrike basically kills (oops, harsh word) the two.
I'm just wondering if any got an idea to flesh this out. It is just a one-shot short story. an URPG Story. (:

Don't worry, tears will be shed... Blood, not so much, but there will be gallons and gallons of tears! >:D
This may sound crazy, but trying to relate to a character makes it easier to write for them at least; I stopped writing the story this thread was about when LibreOffice crapped out in me,but then I realised that I could very loosely adapt some events of my life for the new version of the earlier part of the story, and viola! I had seven A4 pages in two days!
Maybe, for The Arena, you could bring in other events like Contests and the Pokéathlon to liven things up. I haven't read it, so I dint know if you've done these yet, but it would toss in some more variety. And... have you got an antagonist who is full of themselves like a more evil Gary? Guys like those are always fun to write.
So I've had a member of The League as a friend for all this time? The secrets continue to unfold! I hope the next one is that I have super powers. *crosses fingers*

I think there's a lot of potential there. If the two Skitty are seeing are like opposites (like a Machoke and Munchlax), there would also be potential for different types of conflict (a battle to the death against Machoke, and feeding Munchlax so much it becomes sick, for example).
Also, whilst I haven't watched Death Note, it could end up similar to that, with Electrike having to destroy every male Pokémon in Skitty's life until he's the only one left. Each chapter could be one Pokémon's downfall.
Just throwing these ideas out there, so don't feel as though you have to write it this way. :)

Word costs a Bob-Omb, though. XD
I checked out the first half of chapter one today, and I'm beginning to see how badly out of context they are. The one idea I have fir a plot is Typhen having to fight Mana (that was the female Luxio's name wasn't it; my memory is my biggest weakness). Or, a human battle is fought alongside the Pokémon battle, and Typhen could ends up doing something to help. I'm in ideas guy. :3

Mmm, this is a fairly interesting idea (I'm particularly intrigued because I have had a recent interest in Yveltal because of a story idea I have xD). But I'm wondering: what kind of personality are you giving Yveltal?
It seems a little strange that an ordinary Pokemon like Honchkrow would be training a legendary Pokemon--what if this 'krow played more of the role of the corrupting counselor, similair to say... Grima Wormtongue and Theodin (spelling fail xD) in Lord of the Rings? Someone who pretends to be his friend and listening ear, but all they are doing is feeding Yveltal's anger?
Or maybe you could have something like a Honchkrow possessed by Giratina or something xD IDK, throwing things out there xD

Well, I could make the Skitty have around 3 suitors, and into which Electrike would kill them. Great idea!
Anyways, for the curious, this is based on the song Wolf by this Korean group EXO. Although, the meaning is quite closer to their another song called Growl.

Hey, you're welcome! Glad I could help ya! :D Srsly, sounds like a great story!
You could always share them elsewhere! ^^ I understand where you're coming from, though. Still, getting feedback from others will always help improve your writing :) (not that you need much improvement x3)
That sounds interesting! :O I've heard of the site and looked at it a few times, but never tried it. Although it seems really cool :)
*ohheythatremindsme Ishouldclickonyoureggies*
Pfft, always room for improvement. I will be putting up anything I write here though, no worries.

Hey guys, what would you say to something like a prompt exercise, except people assign others prompts/thing they have to include? (Either that or, like, drawing numbers out of a figurative hat which determines who gets who.) So it would be one person devising a setting or part of a setting for someone else and going, "Now write a story that conforms to these restrictions!" I say "restrictions," but you would hardly be limited; maybe it would be something like, people put their names in the thread to be available, so there's a list, and then we can do a random number generator thing to assign people to each other to do their chosen prompt or whatever, so it would be like,
"I choose Grassy for this prompt:
The skies are grey and there's danger in the air...
She has to include the following:
- A theme revolving around revenge
- A lairon
- A glue stick"
Maybe we could have a word limit and a time restriction, and there would be a number of brackets for this, such as, for instance, 400-750 words for a three day limit, 1000-2000 words for a week limit, 5,000 minimum words for a three week limit, etc. Just an idea. xD

Seems like a fun idea. Try not to be too restrictive because that can really kill inspiration XD And if someone is a new writer, you can opt to go easier on them, where a more experienced one can be given a harder task. I would say 2000-3000 for two weeks, and 3000-4000 for 3 weeks... So on and so forth. It can be very difficult to write. It took me months to plan for that college contest and I wrote up 2000+ words in two days, but it was difficult and only because my muse decided to be polite.
(FYI, yes, I won first place ^^ MONEY REWARDS WHOO. And published. That's more awesome.)
Even though I and I know many others could hit that mark, I want to think about the other, younger writers who decide to partake. Don't want to over water the blooming authors for fear of making them wilt.
Also, awesome prompt idea XDDD

Yeah, definitely. xD Maybe there could be a list of things they can choose from? Or like ONE must-have or something? Then they can follow the other must-haves if they want. It could provide ideas and push it in directions the writer wouldn't have otherwise considered. xD But yeah, it should be available for picking. Yeah, true! People can have, if they fill out the form to be put on the prompt list, a preference for the amount of words/time they want to be allocated. ^^ And it's more like a guideline I suppose, since it wouldn't be fun to enforce deadlines. xD Ah yeah, good idea. x) And yes, true!
(THAT'S AWESOME! 8D Well done! WOW THAT IS AWESOME. :DD)
No, of course not! The idea is totally open for suggestions/refinement, of course. ^v^ I appreciate the input! Char and I have been discussing things like this lately.
XD Thanks!

I found this thing on the internet that creates crossover fanfiction ideas for people who can't think of a topic to write about. or if you're too lazy to think of a regular topic or crossover yourself It's called kaction (http://kaction.com/) and it comes up with great themes and plot devices such as "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Neil Patrick Harris and Metallica. The story should use getting sucked into the "real world" as a plot device!"
excellent. Also, I couldn't really find somewhere else to put this and I thought that it could be a challenge (as it says "your challenge is" when it generates something). also this is a feeble attempt to revive this Also, it can come up with some weird things, so you might want to click the title again if you get something too weird... *ahemcough*

Nah. More of, like, stalker tendencies. Electrike stalks; Sees Skitty with suitor; Electrike kills suitor; Repeat.
Although, I don't have inspiration to write, though. Anyone, any ideas? (:

LOL MGS that sounds amazing. XD Imma check it out. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Cinderella and World War II. The story should use a plague as a plot device!"
And hm, Voltaire, a stalker situation, hey? I reckon we should try to put together something that's gonna get people writing...even silly things. Sometimes writing literally anything can get your creativity flowing. Joining GCEA might be an idea if you want to do a casual roleplay sort of thing because you do have to write stuff and it's lots of fun. :] Alternatively, try freewriting. It's awesome. Set a time limit and write anything non-stop for that long and see what comes out. You can't stop even if you write "I have no idea I have no idea" and whatever else comes to your head.
FedoraChar Oh my gosh. This thing is actually amazing. "Your challenge is to write crossover fanfiction combining Metal Gear Solid and Kill Bill. The story should use marriage as a plot device!" I THINK WE SHOULD DO CHALLENGES WITH THIS.

So I know that this thread has not been posted in for more than 20 months, but it's stickied so I am going to take a risk and post in here.
I have been on a kick recently with the Pokemon movies, or at least the first four (still haven't seen Pokemon Heroes, but am looking for it, or any of the advanced generation movies), and this idea came to me after watching Spell of the Unown. What would a journey fic look like with Molly Hale as the protagonist? I was thinking that it would be fun to see her travel through the Johto region (the anime's version of it) with an older Max, who would play kind of a Brock-esque mentorship role, and maybe another companion (Falkner, Bugsy, or another Gym Leader to go really old school on the traditional trio maybe?) and confront some of the deep-seated issues that were hinted at in the movie as well as maybe some sort of larger behind the scenes plot involving the Unown, and/or dreams becoming reality. The details aren't all there yet, although I have a hankering for a crazy trippy dream sequence in the Ruins of Alph that I think would be really fun to write.
I'd be delighted to hear anyone's thoughts on this.

I can't really remember much of the movie, cause it's been so many years since I've seen it, but your idea sounds like a good one! c: What kinda issues would your story deal with? Also I'm all for the crazy dream sequence; I love the Ruins of Alph. xD

To recap: This Indiana Jones-esque researcher guy is obsessed with the Unown, he goes off to investigate them and is sucked into a different dimension leaving his little daughter Molly all alone, save for like servants because he was really well off. Somehow the Unown get to her and grant her the power to remake reality to her four year old heart's content. Dealing with the crippling loss of her family, she wishes for, in short order, a crystal kingdom that engulfs the surrounding countryside, an Entei made out of dreams and voiced by Dan Green (although that's a tad cumulative), and then she wants a mom so she can finally not feel so alone. This naturally leads to phantom-Entei kidnapping Ash's mom and our favorite hero and his friends attempting to break through, literally and figuratively, the world that Molly's shattered innocence and the Unown's power have conjured up while showcasing some of the best battles and uses of Pokemon in the series in my humble opinion. Oh, and her dad comes back after it's all over which is good.
Phew.
So I was thinking that the story would pick up six years later, with Molly starting on her own Pokemon journey, maybe not so much because of any desire to be the very best at anything but rather because the time spent in that Shadow Realm-esque dimension really did a number on Molly's father and they lost much of their fortune and the girl wants to stop having to look at the hopelessnessher dad embodies everyday. You can bet she feels guilty about this, and this would be just the tip of the iceberg in expanding on what one reviewer called, "The classic symptoms of PTSD" demonstrated by Molly during the movie when she was literally a four-year-old girl. You just don't bounce back from almost seeing a fake Entei snap a Charizard's neck. It just isn't done.
So obviously I don't have much beyond the very broad strokes of the story, namely of a girl trying to escape from her current life, but also incredibly wary of the horrors that her dreams can become. I have no villain or overarching external conflict that could serve as some kind of catharsis for this, and I think the story could really use something besides the "what about the Unown?" scrawled in my notebook, if only to help move along the adventures of the traumatized protagonist and give the story some energy and maybe some highet stakes?
I'm open to any and all ideas, this is a super rough sketch in my mind still!

OH MY GOSH. Speak no more. I think I need to call on Otter Mii-kun. LOOK AT PHANTASM'S STORY IDEA! That does sound really cool, Phant! I reckon it'd make for a pretty cool story, though I wouldn't default to the "mentor + gym leader" formula simply because it's what we're used to. Switch it up a little! :D If you want. Lol. I think that there's a lot that could be done with an underlying "deep-seated issues" storyline relating to perhaps her father and the unown. Interesting!

I don't normally hang out in this section of PXR, but I'm here because Suicune's Fire mention-tagged me in this thread (which left me a notification to answer)...
I really love your story idea of Molly Hale traveling as a trainer! I also love that you plan on including Max in your story idea (although I know it probably won't involve SmartKidShipping). I'm perfectly fine with a Gym Leader as another of her traveling companions, but, if you can find someone else to tag along instead as Suicune suggested, that'd be even better. The 'deep seated issues' that you mentioned would also be a great fit.
(It's late at night, and I can't think of anything else to suggest other than to say "Go For It!" I know I shouldn't get 'greedy' and expect a single chapter let alone a completed story anytime soon, though. Take your time! ;) )

I had to google what Smart Kid Shipping was and only found one picture on Deviant Art, but it was really cute. But alas, I don't think that this story would contain much of that, just because I think I want there to be a greater focus on how Molly creates and handles all of her relationships; familial, friendly, with her Pokemon, and even with herself. That's part of why I think there need to be travel companions for her to give her some sort of positivity to work with and to bounce dialogue off of. This decision not to make it a Smart Kid Shipping fic (adorable as the concept is!) also makes me want to include a third traveling companion to flesh out the team and balance the focus. Does anyone have any ideas? My first thought was Casey, but if this takes place about five or six years after the Johto saga (making Molly 10 and Max 12 if my cartoon math is in order), then Casey would be significantly older in a way that I think would damage the believability of the story. Come to think of it, a gym leader probably wouldn't work too well then either, unless they were around the age of Tate or Liza, which doesn't fit any of the Johto gym leaders...unless maybe Koga's daughter Janine is the third member of the trio? Anyways, that's just my ramblings on that particular subject.
Lunar Latias
I watched Pokemon Heroes this morning, and wow what a beautifully animated and scored film. I can't say that I was the biggest fan of the plot as it kind of relegated Brock and Misty to pretty unimpressive side roles in order to focus more on Bianca and the Lati siblings, plus there were not as many good Pokemon battles like there were in the previous four films, which is a key criteria for my love. The notable exception was how Annie and Oakley used their Pokemon: just attacking people with them without a second thought. It was neat to see Ash, and later an old man, get blasted by an Espeon on purpose and a girl get strung up by an Ariados for a brazen daylight kidnapping. I honestly thought that Annie and Oakley were the best part of the movie's plot elements, and that got me thinking that there might be a way to tie more elements of the anime into this story bouncing around in my head. After all, Oakley was pretty darn power-hungry when given control of Alto Mare's DMA. What would happen if the reality warping powers of the Unown were in the hands of someone like that instead of a precocious young child?

Posting in a thread that is almost three years moribund, because I watched two James Bond movies thus far this weekend and I was wondering if people have any ideas for what a super spy along those lines would look like in the world of Pokemon? Would he have a specially trained team of Pokemon or be provided new, specialized ones for each mission by the quartermaster to replace cool spy gadgets? Would he carry any regular weapons? What kind of villains and plots would he have to uncover and stop? I am currently in a Roger Moore, world-saving vein of the series, but I can see the merit of a grittier Timothy Dalton- or Daniel Craig-type of story as well.

I thought of him as soon as I posted, but while he does arrest some Team Galactic people and observe them, does he exhibit many of the trademarks of the genre? He does not strike me as a womanizer, lacks any cool gadgets (to the point that he is impressed by the Poketch), and lets a kid save the world instead of manning up and doing it himself. He might be a useful starting point, but if I were going to place him in a James Bond context, he would be one of 007's government liasons, like the CIA or KGB agents that he works with. Important to the plot, perhaps, but not the leading man.

What a question.
I would say that a spy would definitely be given specialised pokemon for certain jobs, or even to suit a particular spy. Sounds like a great story. When you writing it? ;)

Ehehehe...
First, I would need a villain and a plot! Something less tied to the existing evil teams, maybe, and definitely shying away from legendary Pokemon as a focus point.
