Making a new thread because it's much quicker than asking someone to move the way older one. x]
I just thought I'd make a seperate thread for this.

Was mucking around, got really inspired by this tutorial. Wanted to try more realistic pixel art, starting with...well, a fruit. A mangosteen, to be exact.
It consists of 32 colors. First realistic pixel art, I've got a long way to go / a lot to learn. Tried to use 50/50 dithering to help the colors blend...hmm. Oh, right: this image (http://en.blog.hotelnights.com/wp-content/plugins/php-image-cache/image.php?path=/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/mangosteen-thai-fruit.jpg) was my reference. I still need to add the second mangosteen there. Anti-aliased to fit well on a white / light-colored background, I will probably end up changing that....
Working on a large Bulbarita:

From an image I sketched out. Still a WIP.

I was working on things for some type of Chao...sidescroller thing. But then I got more interested in coming back here. :P
Older Pixels:

A mix between Mandibuzz and Nidoqueen: Mandiqueen. It uses 13 colors.

Okay, okay...I'm a big VanivilleShipping nutcase. I'm crazy about these two. And Trevor, OMG SQUEE. I am such a fangirl, he is so adorkable. > W <
TCG Pixel Overs. In order from oldest to newest, kinda. 8 color limit.

Progress on Bulbarita:
http://i.imgur.com/9rktVuc.png
I guess I tried to go for a more realistic approach. Heavily anti-aliased, meant to be on a white background. Only 17 colors used thus far. Just have a little bit more to go and a lot of touching-up to do! After I get done with this cutie I'll work on whichever one I decide to sketch out next....
Ta-dah! Bulbarita get!
http://i.imgur.com/ohSQUoz.png http://i.imgur.com/MZXLOEx.png
White outlines exist because of how it's only compatible on a white background...which was indeed intentional. 18 colors total, huzzah! I hate having an odd-numbered color count. OTL
It's done, with its shiny palette. Next will be Treekasaur.
Edit: nevermind, found a yucky and redundant color that could stand to get outta town. Back to an odd 17 color count. orz

Thanks! They're really fun to make. ^^
I haven't posted here recently because I haven't done much that is really worth being shown in this gallery. xD Just some edits for this request service I have on Pokefarm Q.
However, I did start on a little side project, so to speak. Again, they're simply edits, but they're really fun...and I like miniature things, soooo....

Basically, I just minimize the size by 50% and make a lot of touch-ups. They're fun because they're relatively quick, and it slightly challenges you: they're like a puzzle, in a way. You have to be able to get sufficient amount of detail on them while simultaneously not sacrificing their readability by adding too much detail.
Off on the side I'm working on a little Pokemon Egg Hatchery / Adoption Center of these little guys; they hatch and evolve in the course of a few days. Simultaneously, the "stock" of mystery eggs will repeat every other day or so. I might post it here too, but again since I've been a little busy lately I'm not making any promises. Also, I don't plan on starting that type of thread until I can get a really good amount of them done.
I have a resized Egg from BW as well, but I'll have to post it later today when I'm actually on my art computer. Also I think I have a Weedle done, too....

OOOO: THEY LOOK SO COOL AND I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT DONE BEFORE. XD It's awesome! Great job. c: I imagine it WOULD be challenging but fun. :> I especially like the kakuna...for some reason it just works brilliantly. And the lapras. And caterpie. xD
Really nice work. c:

Thanks Xanthe! Some are more or less challenging that others. It obviously just depends on the level of detail. Like, the Metapod, Lapras, and Seviper took almost no time at all.
It was so funny because there was this user on PFQ who subscribed to my thread there who really liked the mini Pokemon. In my request shop someone requested a Butterfree (was difficult but was worth the effort) and so later I finished the evo line. Ninby I think really likes Butterfrees and such, so I made an edit to look like her Ninja Caterpie Pokésona, Nini. Her reaction was so adorable. XD
But hahah, I totally went off on a tangent there....
(I wish my sleeping pills would kick in soon Im too energetic to sleeeeeep)
Edit: ugh. Why is it that whenever I start posting anywhere in this subforum everyone just shuts up and doesnt say anything for days? :< I hate to whine, but its been bugging me for a while. Christ, I work hard to try to get comments. =_= Ive stayed quiet about it for a long time, but Ive never understood. :[
Just seriously...why? Did I say something to offend people? Do I just give off some unintended air of repelling elitism or something? Did I say or do something to offend anyone?
Or worse: am I just not interrsting enough? Posting original content doesnt work. Posting fan art doesnt work. What do I have to do?

No worries! :D Yeah, that makes sense. Orly? Well that's handy. xD For not taking much time, they really turn out awesomely.
Oh nice. 8D Ahaha aw, one of the benefits of having young kids on that site... xD Omg one time, back when I was into pokefarm (but it stole my life for weeks so I sorta hate it now for that XD), I commented on this person's thread to tell them nicely and helpfully that they were doing their recolours wrong (seriously, each shade of that houndoom was a different default Paint colour...), and even provided an example of a correctly coloured rainbow houndoom, and the thread starter and their friend absolutely CRACKED THE SH1TS AT ME. It was RIDICULOUS. XD They started accusing me of flaming and bullying, and I was LITERALLY trying to defend myself by saying that all I wanted to do was help them improve. In NO way did I insult them, and they got on the defensive immediately and ugh... It annoyed the absolute crap outta me and I never revisited the spriting/art section of that place again. XD SERIOUSLY.
xD Tangents are awesome.
Nuuu it's nothing to do with you. D: I think people just randomly come in and out of this section. =/ It's annoying, but it happens. Trust me, it's not an issue with you. :] You didn't say anything to offend anyone, and you're perfect interesting! I think we need a broader audience. D: SOMEONE NEEDS TO ABDUCT PEOPLE AND TAKE THEM TO PXR. >:3

Ah man, like Xanthe, I think it's also the section. There aren't too many spriters on PXR to begin with, so we are pretty sporadic. (plus I tend to lurk more often than post *flails*). I'll do my best to post more xD
Well onto the actual topic...

I just wanted to butt in and let you know whenever you post I am always excited to read it. You're a really interesting and intelligent member of the forum, and I always like to see your input and your fantastic art. :) Activity levels are usually related to the day, who is checking out the forum, etc, I definitely don't think they relate to you, silly.

WOW I LOVE IT! 8DD Seriously, it's fantastic. XD I love how it looks like it's wearing overalls a little. Great use of colours, although the contrast between shades of black seems more stark than your usual style. Same with the eye and mouth lineart. Not a bad thing; just an observation. ^^ Anyways, it's fantastic as always. Lucky Pumpkaboo! XD

Thank you! ;u; And lol, overalls.
Good eye! XD It was kinda intended and unintended at the same time, that is if that even makes sense. I figured that by toying with the shading style a little bit, I could maybe add to that "cute / simple" appearance. No worries! x]

A Snivy Sugimori pixel-over. I am never...EVER...doing a Sugimori pixel-over this detailed ever again. I'm ashamed to admit that this turned out to be around 40 colors. T^T
I tried to add the white border because the Snivy is SO HEAVILY anti-aliased, but doing that just made it look choppy so I anti-aliased the white border and changed the layer's opacity to 50% so it wouldn't have any trouble no matter what the background color may be. It didn't do very much to null the effect, though.
I think I made too much of an effort to stay true to the original style. O_o

Here's another avatar commission.
http://i.imgur.com/Bhjw8LN.png
I was going for a simple-yet-not-too-simple style. Umbreon's colors are plain so I decided to do some extra hue-shifting to make it look more vivid and interesting. x] About 14 colors total. I'm rather satisfied with this, actually. Original was 150 x 150 pixels; however, that wasn't working so well so I shrunk it to 100 x 100. Turned out a lot better!

Everything looks really good. For the Umbreon, I think you pulled off the hueshifting well, and the colors fit together. The one thing that cooould possibly change (though I'm not very sure on this) would be to perhaps shift that dark gray shading on Umbreon towards purple so it lines up with the scarf a bit. It looks great as it is though!
SassySnivy
04-24-2014, 09:22 PM
I think I actually was going towards violet with the hue-shifting now that I look back, but it's so faint. I was still able to effectively use some of the black colors for the scarf, however, but yeah, I totally agree it would look really cool if it semi-dramatically went from a cyan-ish to a violet. Because it's always really cool when pixel artists will actually use dulled-out bright hues to portray lighter spots or vivid, dark hues to portray darker areas. o 3 o Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely keep that in mind.
Also don't worry about hurting my feelings, because I love harsh crits. x] At least ones that are to-the-point. So if it's a hassle then don't worry about sugar-coating things if you don't feel like it. xD Just giving a heads-up!
I honestly feel that getting some kind of crit is one of the best compliments an aspiring artist can receive.

I love all your new sprites. c: I think something about the umbreon's face seems a little off to me though; I'm thinking that maybe it's the shape of the head or the placement of the mouth? Perspective for me is really hard so I'm not entirely sure. Nevertheless, it's coloured beautifully. ^^
The revamps are awesome; I greatly admire how you do those. c: The alakazam sprites seem to have more black outlines than the other sprites you devamped, which makes them seem a little out of place, but other than that, fantastic. :D The skitty's very well done too, but there's one single pixel that's annoying me... It's above the leg and just under the pink. It seems to be darkish, but not dark enough to be an outline colour (though I think it's a continuation of the leg outline but a lighter colour for blending purposes). I think it would look better if it was just pink. x)
WONDERFUL JOB AS ALWAYS. <3

Thank you, Xanthe. I'm not quite sure about the Umbreon; I gave it a slightly more cartoony appearance and exaggerated some facial features to overall make it seem more goofy. Does the problem revolve around this, maybe, or is it something else?
To be totally honest, the Alakazam was a revamp of a revamp. I originally made one in the DPP style a few years back, and then revamped it again to match the style of Gen V. The BW Alakazam's outlines are actually mainly black.
http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/8/88/Spr_5b_065_m.png
I think maybe the problem is with the Machamp. It has many more colored outlines...then again, looking at its official Gen V one, it does have a lot of "broken" outlines. Although maybe I did use too much color for the line art on Golem, too. Come to think of it, that Golem revamp looks really off to begin with. :| Anyways, thank you!
The description of the offending pixel on the Skitty is a little vague, so I'm not sure that I understand where exactly you're talking about. xD; However, that did make me look at it with a lot more scrutiny and I did end up finding a couple of other errors. :>

http://i.imgur.com/ThXRxML.png
They were both minor errors, but made a big difference overall. x] I just love the scrutiny that comes with pixel art.
I think it might be the shape of the head around the mouth part, how it goes out at the sides. And also the large mouth in general. XD It's just an opinion though; the actual pixel work is great, of course.
Ahhh, that makes sense. x) Maybe. I liked the machamp though. Yeah, I think I remember seeing in a few different sprites of machamp that they had broken outlines. Lol nah, I think it looks great. No worries! ^^
Lol it is! But that looks much better! :D You addressed what I found amiss, and now the pink is skirting nicely with no offending pixels, as you put it. xD Beautiful work. c: And I agree; it's amazing how A FEW PIXELS can make such a giant difference. xD
I am in love with all of your fusions. xD Tell me again, how do you do it exactly? I'm sure you fuse them to get their proportions/features and then you scratch them in your own pose after that? Or something similar? I really like them all; I don't think you need to entirely redo the quilmeleon. I think the feet are a little rigid, so fixing that would suffice. ^^ The others I have nothing to critique because they're so awesome, except, actually the blastogatr's shell seems to be sitting weirdly. I feel like the line between the skin and the shell could be more rounded or something, as the way it is now makes it look like it's jutting out to the side rather than sitting on its back. I'm not really sure how to fix it, but that's what it looks like. Aside from that, I think that the treekosaur is fine apart from the spots. The red is awkward when blotched on the green like that; I think doing a darker green like how it is on bulbasaur would work better, especially if you minimised the places that the spots sit.
I didn't know what DarkNerd was talking about with the treekorita until I saw the shiny version; that central pixel looks like the pupil, which DOES give it a creepy stare. XD I know that it's actually looking toward the ground, but the shiny version is deceiving. But yeah, aside from those points, I really love them. ^v^

http://i.imgur.com/nz4hVjJ.png
It has 15 colors. Also, good LORD it was really difficult to try to get the alpha character on its head to have the correct angling. Still failed, but at least I tried.
Also, my explanation: I'm sure you may be wondering why its design is based on Primal Kyogre. Let's take a look-sie, shall we? Primal / Ancient Kyogre is, as its name suggests, what it looked like in ancient times, presumably around its time of creation / birth. Assuming that it was born from an Egg as a different species / baby version, it would have been in ancient times. Sooo...Primal Kyogre is what it originally looked like. Plus this also implies that Kyogre is literally one-of-a-kind, is ever-living, and is not actually able to reproduce, unlike some legendaries that aren't as significant (Lati duo, etc). Yes, I know no legendary can reproduce in-game, but it's always been hinted at in movies, the anime, and spin-off games and main series games (since, after all, why would Moltres appear in like three different regions at three different times if it supposedly originates from just one of the said regions) that there is some way that some legends CAN, in fact, reproduce. However I like to think of the weather trio as being some of the very original legends. Buuuuttt yeah. Just a little bit of headcanon there. For the contest going on! I had a lot of fun with this. :>

So, guys...where have I been for the past month?
Working on these. (http://www.mediafire.com/download/7xz0173jbmwqdrm/ZIP.zip) You know how GPXPlus has these icons, but the older non-XY versions that look like total crap (and the recoloring jobs don't look much better)? This is what I've been working on: recoloring. Yes, but I plan for these babies to be used. This being said, they aren't transparent yet and/or in their final sizes/dimensions...so bear with me here. Hoping that these will be plenty useful for others. Anyway, this is all of what I have done so far.
It won't take long to download, only 100-ish KB. Also it won't infect your computer. I can assure you that.
And then there's these little cuties:

Heya! I think for every small pixel art piece I do (or almost every) such as these TCG Pixel-overs, I'll upload a video on Youtube of it (except sped up xD ). Yeah, Sigilyph has a pretty high number of colors on its sprite, at about 13. Pretty bold move on their part. And even then, some of the decisions they made on the execution of the sprite boggle me. This being said, I did what I could to fix things up here and there without it deviating too much. x]
Also, the lack of much shading on some of the sprites from Black and White (compared to generation 4, anyway) was done so that the animation process would go by more quickly. I think a great example of the changes in shading from 4th gen to 5th gen are Alakazam's DP and BW sprites:
http://pldh.net/media/pokemon/gen4/platinum/065.png
Platinum's shading is pretty in-depth.
http://pldh.net/media/pokemon/gen4/hgss/065.png
HGSS try to simplify it a little more, making the line art much more prominent.
http://pldh.net/media/pokemon/gen5/blackwhite/065.png
Then you have BW, which heavily simplified it.
The pose and body structures are very similar, yet you can see how much of a difference there is.
Wait wat are you srs. Ugh. Stupid Youtube. Should be fixed, now.

I've finally finished ALL of those shiny XYORAS icons I've been working at.
Wow. I seriously cannot believe how outrageous some of the palettes are for the shiny Kalos Pokemon. I actually had to break some of the "rules" of this style to make it work.
I'm happy to say, though, that I have them all done! EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. o A o Here's a ZIP file to download. I swear it's not contaminated. Uploaded via Mediafire because that's probably one of the file-uploading sites that I trust the most. Was going to do 4shared, but that would inconvenience whoever wants to download the file that doesn't already have an account with them. They're all separated by region and listed by number. Then there's just little letter suffixes for alternate forms and such. Minus Castform's other formes, of course, since there isn't a difference.

That just kinda became a thing. All of a sudden. I dunno, hahahah. Originally I was going to make it be a finalized version of the previous sketch I made. However, I was getting frustrated at Sketchbook's lack of having a paintbrush tool that's affected by pressure sensitivity (the closest I could come to was the pencil tool, which has very low opacity), I just copied the sketch into paint, changed the color format to black and white, refined the outlines, then just...viola. I dunno either. xD

So I was super-inspired by Pokemon subspecies on tumblr.
Basically, these are interpretations of what Pokemon would look like if they acquired traits from the father Pokemon, assuming he was a different species from the female. I personally like it when there are noticeable physiological changes, but at the same time, the changes aren't SO big that they make the Pokemon look like a fusion.
I started with Sneasel. I made a few sketches, and instead of finalizing my sketches and digitally going over them, I did what I know how to do best: pixel art. I took my old Hi-Res BW Sneasel sprites and made some edits.
http://i.imgur.com/UiLIUz3.png
You can probably tell what this one is.
Changes: fur markings; ear and feather-ear are positioned more upwards and forwards; Sneasel's sclera are yellow; small protruding fangs; slightly larger snout / muzzle; red is more red and less pink; main body color is lighter and more gray-ish.
I was thinking of starting a project similar to Dredd's fusion gallery for these things. Thing is, the Pokemon that it slightly resembles needs to be in the same egg group as the mother. Makes more sense this way.
These are so fun to design, though! Fun to finalize, too.

Thanks so much for the comments you guys, it means a lot. ^^
It is, isn't it? I think since these kinds of Pokemon share more similarities to crossbreeds...I'll just call them that for now.
I've kinda figured out by looking at others' designs that there's a really thin line between a crossbreed / variation and a fusion.
Fusions try to incorporate two (or more) characteristics of a Pokemon in a relatively even manner. These crossbreeds, though, don't incite drastic changes to the Pokemon and instead change them physiologically. For instance, notice how I didn't give the Torchic Sneasel a beak? Or replace its arms with wings? Crossbreeds keep the base Pokemon's design and adds elements to its design and at times will deviate its body shape. Also, a lot of the time a variation / crossbreed seems to have a nickname associated with it. For example, here (http://40.media.tumblr.com/40115202e43a537b455ade1d6fde1886/tumblr_nngs9r86wB1rc2534o1_1280.png) here (http://nyapapa.tumblr.com/post/117560292906/variations-of-the-precious-floofball-pokemon-c) here (http://spiralshells.tumblr.com/post/117485017202/i-too-have-been-tempted-in-by-that-pokemon) here (http://too-much-green.tumblr.com/post/116874774324/i-finally-gave-in-and-did-one-of-those-cool) and here! (http://too-much-green.tumblr.com/post/117386028254/more-crossbreeding-variations-this-times-with)
Now just to think of clever names for these Sneasels. ._.
Also a lot of the time, the only characteristical changes to the Pokemon is its behavior. For example, a Torchic-bred Sneasel doesn't magically get fire powers. :P Basically...they're still the same Pokemon. They just have traits of whatever Pokemon their father was.
http://i.imgur.com/ventx68.png
I changed the Poochyena-Sneasel a little bit to make it a little more shaggy and furry, like Poochyena. Also made it a little more grayish.
Oh, and here's a Stunky one. :>

Well, made another crossbreed. I decided to quit on Sneasel crossbreeds and work on Snivy ones instead. :> I had this one sketched on paper; made an improved sketch in Sketchbook, went over it to make the outlines bolder, then resized it to be 100 pixels maximum. Then I just worked my magic from there. 14 colors, which isn't too bad.

Desert Snivy. :> It's a crossbreed with Sandile.
I have concepts for Scraggy, Sandshrew, Meowth, Aipom, Wooper, and Dunsparce. I'm going to start on the one for Meowth now, probably.

Thanks, Selkie! Hahah, I know you're really fond of recycling colors, but sometimes that isn't ALL of what matters. x] Though yes, it does matter a great deal in most scenarios x3

Thanks, Sarah! I'm really looking forward to seeing the final result, also!
Anyway I know I showed Selkie on Skype, but using colors in that way was inspired by some guides on DeviantART made by cospixels. I'll post them here in case anyone is interested, because she does a great job at explaining it.
Palette Creation (http://cospixels.deviantart.com/art/Palette-Creation-520830770)

Full Circle Color Ramps (http://cospixels.deviantart.com/art/Full-Circle-Color-Ramps-531084827)
I was inspired ESPECIALLY by that last one! AAAAAAAA SO AWESOME o A o
Oh, and also yesterday Selkie linked me to a pixel art blog on tumblr that focuses on weekly challenges (http://compixellated.tumblr.com/post/118082285850/weekly-challenge-86-may-3-2015), this week's challenge being Tamagotchi-styled sprites. Turns out this is actually WAY more fun than I originally thought it would be. I started out with Houndour, then Sunkern. I'm pretty sure I need to fix Sunkern badly...it could probably benefit from being a little bigger. That being said, crits are totally appreciated.
Then I made Gengar because I figured I'd make one for all of my VPP Pokemon.

Last Tamagotchi Pokemon for now. I wanted to experiment with color again, using pixel-overs as a terrible excuse. I wanted to do a similar thing that I had done with the Scizor.
http://i.imgur.com/UkSEQPV.png
The RNG said Kyurem, so I accepted the challenge! I actually had a lot of fun with this one, since Kyurem's hide isn't as shiny and smooth as Scizor's. And because of the ice 8D C+C always appreciated!
http://i.imgur.com/s87p24I.png
Furret! Originally I had that pink be a completely separate color from the third-lightest brown. Then I remembered that I'm trying to experiment with colors, here, so I merged the pink and brown to be one color. I was actually really shocked at how well it worked out. Just made a couple of adjustments and I was done. Also the pink pixel in Furret's eyes are supposed to add just a dash of color, as well as give it just a teeny-tiny more of a shimmer. Just a small thing, really.

I'm mainly posting this just because I can, but more experimentation with color! Sorta. I bought a 12-month premium DeviantART sub yesterday and was reorganizing all of my stuff. I found some old stuff and this TCG Pixel over thing:

Hahah. Thank you, Xanthe. :P cospixels / RHLPixels' work is amazing. And she's thinking MY work is amazing. It was really funny because this exchange happened between us:
I want to comment on this to just tell you that this (along with your other color tutorials) has seriously changed my outlook on things. Actually, as I'm practicing with making bolder choices with my colors, I feel like I've changed my point of view and personal style immensely. Just within the past few days of practicing! This has seriously been an inspiration to me. I've actually been using colors from entirely opposite ends of my palettes / color ramps just to provide some accent to certain areas. Not to an excessive extent, though, hahah.
I think a lot of it has to do with how you explain things and break it down. How you word everything makes it sound so much more simple, but at the same time very effective. And, of course, your examples provide little to be asked for! (Er, I think I worded that right) :D
Please keep up the excellent work! And for the watch, by the way xD
Awwww thank you so much for your kind and inspirational words :.D Your palettes and coloring techniques are amazing, I can't wait to see how your work evolves as you experiment with colors! With your talent, you're going to fly :3
You're very welcome! Oh Pffth when I read that my first reaction was OMG R U SRS
Cause seriously I totally admire your work and it's an honor to hear that, so thank you!
DHKDH *Head explodes* I don't think I can even XD I'm always looking up to pixel artists and being all like "I WANT TO PIXEL LIKE DAT SOMEDAY ;___;" So to hear such kind words causes some system shock XD
Hahah! Well then, I guess the feeling is mutual! XD

Phew! I organized an art trade with RHLPixels . It took a few hours, but I managed to finish my half of it!
Thanks SO much to TheoreticalSelkie for helping me out throughout making this. She was like my second pair of eyes, and helped me fix things up a ton!! However, this being said I know there are still some things wrong with it. I highly encourage constructive criticism, but at the same time I appreciate any feedback I can get!
This was some really good practice. I'm really glad I gave this a shot. I wanted to challenge myself and change things up a little. I made it floating upside-down playfully--don't ask me how exactly that works logically, I'm not totally sure how--and the lighting really, really challenged me. This being said I'm not sure if the fact that it's floating / flying / whatever upside-down is super convincing, so if you know how I can fix that PLEASE let me know.

Before I wanted to start on the commission I figured that I'd go ahead and come up with a commission info page. Not a journal, but an actual deviation / image. Anyway for my Hi-Res sprite commission section, I have to provide an example of a "super-detailed, large Pokemon" for $20. Note that there are very few of these, hence the high price. However...I think it's well-worth it, because a lot of work was spent on this Zekrom:
http://i.imgur.com/ijMg5gM.png http://i.imgur.com/qBIBxsB.png
I've actually BEEN wanting to make one of Zekrom for a while now, and kinda decided to use this as an excuse. I'm glad I took up the challenge....
Though man, talk about having to fill in details! Zekrom has so many little details that can't be fit into its 93x93 px sprite thanks to the fact that the readability would suck if the details weren't condensed.
But THAT's not what I'm going for, here. I'm going for not only having enlarged versions of the original sprites, but also to fill in any missing details that had to be sacrificed for the sake of simplicity.
Anyway, I'm working on my commission info. Whether you're interested in buying or not, I'll update you guys with that when I get it done!

So here's what I did instead of my commissions I need to do:
http://i.imgur.com/N2VT2A3.png
Here's the story: I found a really cool tutorial (http://gregarlink10.deviantart.com/art/Tutorial-1-HD-Sprites-260755019) on DeviantART that was about HD Sonic sprites.
While I'm rusty on the Sonic style, I attempted to do the same thing as the goal in that tutorial. What I really liked was how he tried to make the HD Amy in the style of the Sonic Advance 3 menu sprites (http://www.spriters-resource.com/game_boy_advance/sonicadv3/sheet/7151/), with the bold lines.
I tried to do the same thing but ended up more loosely basing it off of the Sonic Advance 3 menu sprite shading style, since it doesn't really translate well 100% without making some adjustments. I did start out making the extra thick outlines on Knuckles, only to later go over it and make it so that I just used some inner anti-aliasing instead. I feel like I followed the style pretty well, both of the original sprite and the SA3 menu style.
The Knuckles I used is the very first sprite you see in this sheet. (http://www.spriters-resource.com/fullview/7147/)
So yeah, I pretty much just decided to go back to my roots. I really want to try animating this guy.

Animated this HD Snivy, went for trying to mimic the first loop of its BW2 animation. Was going to do the rest but now I think I really just need to take a break.
I hate animating in layers in Gale, but it's kinda a necessary evil because I need to have everything divided into sections so I can move / rotate / whatever each little part of the Snivy that's supposed to move...and I touch it up as I go along so I know what's going on but I have to make sure I'm on the correct layer and just asdkfjlsdfjdklfajdfajfkdf

Thanks, Sou! Nah, it actually really sucked because I had to work off of something that was already finished...which is what made those such a pain to animate. If I were finishing the frames all together, then, well, that'd be a different story perhaps!
But naw I just add edits frame by frame; so like I just work off of each frame to make the next one.

Thanks you guys! So I know I have commissions to work on but honestly I kinda wanted to try isometry again. Especially after looking at this tutorial (http://orig06.deviantart.net/46db/f/2015/146/7/b/isometric_tutorial_by_rhlpixels-d8uvs4n.png) by a friend of mine. I tend to get turned off from isometric pixel art because it's less art and more building, quite honestly...but still, I decided to give it another shot. This (http://www.mehrtalk.com/z/2014/10/home-decor-1168esrd-billboard-image-cool-house-plans-beautiful-town-houses-plans-modern-style-nice-houses-with-pools.jpg) is the house I'm modelling it off of. Well, I have the left half of it, anyway.

I've finished more of it...but kinda put it on the backburner until I figure out how I want those side roof tiles to work. Or even if I have them working right, which I honestly don't think I do.

So here's what I did instead of my commissions I need to do:

Knuckles <3 Tails is better though :)
I feel like you were working on chao too, weren't you? SA2B Chao was my life for a good 2 years. #animalglitch #chaoschao #allschao
As always Speedy, your pixely creations are superb. Jealous of your skillssss.

So I got inspired by all the awesome entries in this week's pixel art section of WAR.
I originally made this Charmeleon because I wanted to make a video that basically shows you how I make a basic pixel-over to maybe help people who are unsure of how things work.
Well, I ended up scrapping that. Today I came back to this and figured out that I didn't like the direction it was going...so I turned it into this:

I wanted to take things a step further, so I added a lot of extra muscle-tone to Charmeleon's body, as well as making its fire the primary light source. If you notice the orange and yellow flecks in the eyes, well, that's just Charmeleon's eyes reflecting its tail flame.
15 colors, not including transparency. I had a hell of a good time playing with the shading in this.

Man I keep remembering the brief glory days of Project Mutation activity, where there were a few sprites every day and I would churn out (hopefully good) CC like there was no tomorrow. How did I do it?! Your pixel art looks great as always (I really admire how you pursue it as a serious art form, at a deeper level than just a simple hobby) but something didn't sit right with me for this one, and I've been mulling over how to write the CC since before I joined! I've also not delved deeply into the art that is pixel art for a while, so I don't think I'm the most authoritative or knowledgeable person on this, but I'll give it a shot. As always when I talk about left/right it's in the perspective of the subject, and I hope what I write helps.
On first glance I think what strikes me as the most "off" about this piece is that Snivy's proportions and pose looks a little awkward. I feel like I can't say too much about this; the way you draw a Snivy is up to your interpretation. If I were to compare it to the official art sources and say that the head to body ratio is a lot more equal compared to a normal Snivy's pretty big head and small body, it would be incredibly unfair. Rather, I think the posture of Snivy is just a tad stiff and unnatural. The biggest contributor to this is probably the perfectly straight right arm, and I feel like the pose might look a little bit more balanced had you made the left arm straight as well (for a hugging the stomach kind of pose) or curved out the right arm like the left arm (which would have also upped the glee factor on Snivy's general body language as well!). My attention is also drawn to the nearly identical feet, which in this case is probably fine but if I had to be nit-picky about the general perspective that's been established in the rest of the picture (with the left arm having smaller fingers due to perspective and the leftmost petal on the leaf looking a bit smaller) it seems like the left foot could have been made a tad smaller/higher or the right foot pointed slightly more outwardly just to create a bit more variety between the feet. It doesn't look bad, but the thing about posture and nature is that no two things are identical and that things don't tend to occur in straight lines or perfect squares or circles or such. The tips of the two feet being noticeably identical is incredibly nit-picky of me, but I feel like a small change in just one arm and one leg will go far in making the Snivy's posture a bit more natural.
You've already addressed the colour a bit in response to Elrond's critique of this piece (which I found by accident and decided to read before formulating this) and you've correctly identified that the hue-shifted highlights that you've given to Snivy (done very well I might add) looks a bit out of place as it doesn't harmonise well with the background. I find that the background is severely lacking in harmony with the Snivy in general, but it is not an easy task to pixel a background in any situation! There's two ways to approach backgrounds and objects in most artistic mediums; you can just have a background with its basic colours in a neutral lighting environment paired with an object with its basic colours in a neutral lighting environment to obtain a picture akin to a photograph taken inside a white room with white lights or something. This is something like the way Pokemon sprites worked before Gen 6, where the sprites were shaded in a very neutral fashion and so were all the backgrounds, so they paired well together, and that's kind of how the blue sky and green grass work with the Snivy in this picture. However, it's a bit more jarring than what you'd see in the Pokemon games as Snivy has not been shaded in a way which implies a neutral lighting environment, while the background has. It's also a bit strange that Snivy is the only object that actually has highlights; the highlighting done on Joltik and the grass is a lot more subtle compared to the oomph factor that hue-shifting provides. When you see the minimal yellow highlights on Snivy, you would expect a very warm, low-lighting environment; something like a sunset (which would've worked great with a lot of the colours that already exist on Snivy!), or a torch-lit room, to list a few. In the case you had good reason to have a nice blue sky with the grass you do, it should be reasonable to go in reverse in the sense that you incorporate colours of the background into Snivy and Joltik. Make the background more vibrant, then use those colours to harmonise with Snivy and Joltik. I know you worked on the objects and the background separately, but when you're thinking about colours you should consider what's more important to the overall feeling of the piece, such as the desire to have a very specific environment or the desire to make your subject matter pop, and try to manipulate the other into making sense with the colours that you've already decided are the most important. You could've just as easily given the grass some of the yellow highlights transitioning into a lighter colour (near-white if you don't like using pure white), and then give Snivy similar highlights to imply that it's a very bright sunny day for example. Make the sky a bit lighter with colours picked from Joltik's eye and also shift the shadows a bit more to the blue side, and you might save colours while making the overall atmosphere more focused.
On the topic of shading, you've done very well as you usually do! In terms of texturing, the dithering on Snivy's highlights is pretty obvious and actually makes the Snivy look a little scaly. This would partly be due to the resolution of the image and sheer size of it being a lot larger than, well, most pixel art, and dithering in this case creates more of a texture than it might on a smaller image. Something else to consider as to why the dithering might be more prominent here is because it is used rather sparingly, i.e. it only applies to highlights. Had the shadows been dithered as well (and I'm not entirely sure why you decided not to; it would've gone a long way in making the feet and tail leaf feel a bit more... flat without being flat, if you catch my drift) then it might not be so prominent. On the topic of shadows, as I already mentioned, I feel like some skilful dithering (which you're perfectly capable of) would've been nice in adding a bit more depth and consistency to the shading of Snivy. On top of this, it may be hard to hugging the shape of the body when you shade it on a serpentine body such as Snivy's, but with the implied direction of the light and the way the back has been shaded, I think extending the shadow along the curve of the body more would be appropriate and work pretty well. The shape is communicated well enough as is, but it could potentially look more natural and be unambiguously more conical.
And that's all I really had to say! I'm sorry if my use of parentheses makes it a bit hard to read, I tend to type out sentences that I make in my head orally, so there's a lot of odd pauses as if I'm mid-rant all the time. I also feel like I'm being incredibly nit-picky and maybe not as constructive and more critical than I intended to be, but in the end I hope you get something out of reading all this! Keep up the good work; maybe I'll look at critique'ing some of your other stuff when I have time.

I honestly wish I could say that this thing deserved such a long, well-thought and well-typed response as this. In all honesty I did rush a lot on the background and took little time to adjust things. But I'm going to respond to your critique because I sure as hell know that I'm going to be able to learn a lot from this as long as I reference back to it.
I've also not delved deeply into the art that is pixel art for a while, so I don't think I'm the most authoritative or knowledgeable person on this, but I'll give it a shot. As always when I talk about left/right it's in the perspective of the subject, and I hope what I write helps.
Being a good critic has less to do with how the critic can apply the techniques themselves and more to do with the critic understanding what's supposed to be what. I can't stand those people that ignore peoples' critiques if their art isn't that good. *CoughChristopherHartcough* There's nothing to worry about. :>
I suppose for the closest arm, I was going for some...slight foreshortening, perhaps. Looking back, though, I can understand how it looks too straight.
And about this Snivy's...rather strange body shape, check the shiny Snivy in my signature. It's a link to this character's reference; perhaps I should have been more specific about that. Just wanted to throw that out there, though! :>
For the posture as a whole I was going for the "arms sticking out, curved slightly upwards; body facing outwards a little bit" thing. A bit of an exaggerated pose for when an entity notices something behind them, and does so cutely. I'm hoping that makes a little sense.
Snivy's feet are rather tricky and I think for the most part I was making them in reference to the official artwork. But in this case, since Snivy's body is slightly at more of an angle...it does look odd, and it does look as if the two feet are on the same exact plane when they actually aren't. Feet positioning has always been a weakness of mine, so I definitely will pay more attention to that in the future.
I really, really, REALLY appreciate your feedback pertaining to the background. A lot of what you said kinda falls under a lot of what Elrond mentioned what with the lighting and creating more harmony and all, which has been addressed already. x] Well, not CHANGED addressed, but like, confronted. And while the background was sadly rushed. Looking back I'm not sure why I didn't take more time on it; I'm sure it was because I was just eager to get my URPG Pokemon and was focused less on actually making the piece as best as I could have made it.
you can just have a background with its basic colours in a neutral lighting environment paired with an object with its basic colours in a neutral lighting environment to obtain a picture akin to a photograph taken inside a white room with white lights or something. This is something like the way Pokemon sprites worked before Gen 6, where the sprites were shaded in a very neutral fashion and so were all the backgrounds, so they paired well together, and that's kind of how the blue sky and green grass work with the Snivy in this picture.
This totally sums up the kind of thing I did here. I am much more used to creating singular images that are meant to exist on their own without a background. I think maybe if I were to have taken a different process here, I could have prevented that. Here I treated the foreground and background as two different entities...which in itself isn't that bad, but I do want to try to take things a different way next time. It's clear that that technique didn't work for me, at least not this time.
I typically do a lot more dithering when it comes to highlights than when it comes to the darker shades. It's just...something I've done, I suppose. I honestly don't like to do both and instead do one or the other, else it might seem a little overdithered. And it always depends on the situation xD
I did want to use that as an emphasis, though. You tend to see scaly textures more prominently in areas closest to light, which is something that I exaggerated upon. I honestly see this more as a matter of stylistic choice, but as always your feedback is invaluable. <3
Looking back, extending the shading to fit the curve of the body definitely would have added more depth.
It's also a bit strange that Snivy is the only object that actually has highlights; the highlighting done on Joltik and the grass is a lot more subtle compared to the oomph factor that hue-shifting provides.
Not exactly. Joltik is so small that adding very prominent highlights would likely take away the readability (and readability is something that I totally messed up in its eyes, hah). Plus Joltik has a very fuzzy texture, so adding a highlight that's too prominent would make it appear glossy which would be really out of place.
Again I can't thank you enough for your critique. While there were a couple of things I didn't agree with...that just happens. With these pixel-overs I've been doing (the Charmeleon and Flygon) I've been trying to practice shading from different angles, so I think if you were to ever give some feedback on if I'm doing those right that would be super-helpful as well! But that's totally your call. ^^
This Gengar is still rather largely unfinished (still need to do some corrections if I can find any and lots of touch-ups), but in all honesty I'd really like to know if there are any big, glaring problems (or even smaller ones that take a slightly more trained eye to find) with how the shading works, here. Or anything else, really! My main focus with these is shading, though, since I definitely want to practice with more obscure light sources.
http://i.imgur.com/mIqtq8F.png
I wanted to make the light come from below, in front, and slightly off to the left in order to contribute to Gengar's menacing appearance.

Well, we're two different people after all, so it's expected that some of the impressions and opinions I have of your art will conflict with your own. I sometimes feel like offering critique can come off as "No, I'm more skilled than you, and if I were in charge than I would do this instead of that because this is clearly the better way to go about it", which would make me feel horrible if I do come off as such but I know that you're very receptive of my comments and that I can help you look at your art in slightly different manner that will help you improve in the future.
In regards to my spiel about the background, I recognised that Elrond pointed out a lot of the flaws in the harmony but I think the main thing I was trying to express were possible methods with which you can consider constructing your palettes in future pieces of the same scale.
http://i.imgur.com/nDeZdTJ.png
I reckon you almost nailed it with the shading on this one! Using the shade of orange from the flame throughout all of Charmeleon was a great call and really brings the sprite together; especially the subtle specks of it you used to tint the belly in a sense. The only things I can see that could be improved on would mainly be the outlines. As it is, the shading is incredibly smooth and wonderful; which brings attention to how the outlines, while the linework is great, end up looking a little bit more jagged than perhaps intended. The contrast between the outlines and the colours is a bit higher than I would say the contrast is between each shade and how it's shaded, and I think smoothing out the outline with some aliasing, probably on the outer edge, would benefit the sprite. In addition to this, I've noted that you really stick to darker outlines in general, as opposed to say many of my sprites (like my recent WAR entry) where I quite happily put much lighter colours in the outlines. There's no better or worse to these methods, but the main thing to note here is the back of Charmeleon. By nature, a line of diagonal pixels simply appear to be thinner than a vertical and horizontal line of pixels. Rather than having a straight barrier between the shades and the white background, diagonal outlines allow a lot more of the background to influence how we interpret the shades and the outline colours, and the bottom line here is that the consistently dark outline you've used is subtly broken by the outline on the back of Charmeleon. I recognise that the colour used is the same as anywhere else, but if you simply look at it at 100% it gives off the impression that it's a bit lighter, which in turn creates expectations that this lighting effect on the outline would be present elsewhere on the sprite; and alas it is not. In addition to this, the single pixel where the back meets the tail feels the most noticeably 'jagged' or out-of-place, and while it seems to be there to give the tail a bit more of a curve, it would be better off perhaps a pixel longer or absent.
If there were any major hiccups with the shading, I would have to point out the stray yellow highlight on the offside of Charmeleon's belly. I recognise that there is a very subtle secondary light source which enriches the depth of the limbs and claws, but the yellow highlight on the belly does still look a bit out of place. I like that the red has a slight shift towards blue with the shadows, and it looks great with the yellower highlights (it's seriously a very good ramp for red) and that in turn makes the away-from-light zone of Charmeleon a bit of a no-go for more yellowey colours. On that note as well I feel like you could've been more adventurous with the shadows on the belly and shifting it towards green, which kind of goes against what I'm saying with the whole shadows =/= yellow thing but it's more about using colder colours away from the literally hot light source. There's nothing wrong with the palette as it is and cold browny colours obviously exist and are fine, but shifting in the other direction (in other words making it less red) and using a desaturated shade is another way you could've gone about it to put a little oomph and variety/balance in the palette.
The specks of red in the iris is a neat subtle addition, but the orange may have been excessive in the eye white. It's a cool effect, but it kind of makes the eye a little murkier than you perhaps might have intended. Unless it is intended, which in that case ignore this statement. I will personally add that using yellow to alias the eye would've been sufficient, and to add to this, I feel like putting a hint of a more saturated yellow on the light side of the claw would've also pushed the shading effect a little further, because as it is the claws are very standard. I also think the shading pattern was overdone a little on the claws; and it's more of a preference thing but I think using a darker shade on the other side of the 'main shadow line' of the claw would look a little better.
I don't have time for it right now, but I'll look at Flygon in more depth later if you want me to. I think the bottom line is that I find the palette of Flygon a tad drab, but I'll take another look.
The Gengar is coming along very nicely! Only real comments I have on the shading at the moment would be to make the right arm a little brighter possibly, and I think that the highlights above the edges of the mouth should be shadows instead, but that's dependant on what you're trying to communicate with that. On the pose and linework itself, I think the right leg could be moved a little further up along the right side of the body to make the pose a little bit more dynamic and I think the general shape would improve as well.

I personally don't feel like you're coming off that way, lol. Sure it takes a lot of gut to take criticism, and even then it's hard, but I don't think anyone that's well-seasoned in that kind of field would really take it that way; especially since you're not going off and being an *** about it. And if they do, then they probably weren't worth the time anyway, sadly. :P My only concern though is your huge run-on sentences. xD They do make things a little hard to keep up with. But I try.
while the linework is great, end up looking a little bit more jagged than perhaps intended. This is also a stylistic choice. Some prefer their outlines more prominent than others, but I can understand where you're coming from. I personally like to have depth, but I do also enjoy giving my art a slightly exaggerated, almost cartoony feel as well.
When you're making pixel art that is meant to stand individually and without a particular background, anti-aliasing on the outline is a big thing that you really don't want to do. Unless I misunderstood you there somewhere.
I really want to understand exactly what you were saying about the outlines, but I read it several times and I'm still having a lot of trouble understanding what exactly you're trying to refer to. Don't be afraid to include visual help, such as editing my original pixel-over. :> It helps a lot, and I really don't mind at all
For some reason I figured that the yellow on the chest would provide more backlight from the fire, but pretty sure you're right: it does look really out of place. I tried your suggestion on making the belly hue-shift towards green, and it did give it a little more depth because of the really subtle complimentary color scheme going on. Thanks!
I did get really carried away with the flicker in the eyes, hahahah. I fixed that and it looks a little better now. I think I understood what you meant about the claws.
I'm going to go ahead and post the edits I've made, so let me know if ended up understanding what you meant about the claws. :o

As for Flygon, it does lack a little oomph. I went and played with Flygon's colors a little bit more, and I do like how it stands out.
http://i.imgur.com/8NI4jM0.png
(Even a little sentence of advice can go a long way)
As for Gengar, I may have forgotten to mention that it was a pixel-over. Of the Global Link Art (http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/2/25/094Gengar_Dream.png). As I said before, I'm making these both to customize my URPG stats AND to also practice on more dynamic shading without having to worry too much about structure and form. So while it isn't out of my control to change the leg, I simply prefer not to. But I do see where you were coming from and I do really appreciate the suggestion.

Gengar does still feel super-unfinished though and I'm having a lot of trouble putting my finger on why. I think there's too much blank space up at the top of the head but I honestly am not sure if there is anywhere else I can put shading / highlights with it still making sense. .-.
And I know that it might not seem like it but I really do appreciate the constructive feedback. It's very helpful! I also know how tiring it can be to give crits, so don't feel obliged to do it or anything. x] I'm sure you already are but feel free to just do it in your own time whenever it is that you feel like it. And like I briefly mentioned before, even a short few sentences can go a really long way. :D
I guess I just don't want you to feel pressured to write up these giant critiques just because of how grateful I am to get them.

I guess I just don't want you to feel pressured to write up these giant critiques just because of how grateful I am to get them.
I never actually intend for them to be so long, but because of my habit to run on with my sentences and because I apparently just have a lot to say, it happens naturally haha.
When you're making pixel art that is meant to stand individually and without a particular background, anti-aliasing on the outline is a big thing that you really don't want to do. Unless I misunderstood you there somewhere.
I suppose this comes from different preferences, purposes and intentions. Mainly because I've had a huge background working with the GBA generation Pokemon sprites I've gotten into the habit of colouring, lightening and AAing the outlines quite a bit. Sprites I've made in the past and sprites I've worked with are all usually presented on a white background, never to really be used for anything, so having a lot of straight black lines was never really something I did. I can see where you're coming from though, and you do make a good point. I don't think a lot of the sprites I've made before would look very good on a dark banner or anything.
In any case, the claws and the belly look even better now! I'm glad I helped with that. My comment on the claws is hard to explain better, but it was essentially a little bit too "metallically sharp" rather than "claw/cone sharp", and when you use that kind of shading/shaping effect on every claw they start to look a little out of place.
As for what I was trying to say about the outline, it's really not much worth mentioning but it is more prominent on a lighter background (such as here) than it would be if you looked at the sprite on the standard grey checkerboards that represent transparency. It's much more of an unintentional visual 'illusion' of sorts than it is a result of technique, but it boils down to the back's outline looking much lighter than say, the elbow or the tail (where you would expect it to be the lightest). Especially in regards to the tail and the back, where the same outline colour was used primarily, but it looks lighter on the back which breaks the consistency just enough that I decided it was worth picking at haha. The main reason it looks lighter is as I said, the line is visually thinner at the back because of its slope. As for regaining the consistency of the outline, I'd say to just experiment with darkening the outline on the back and maybe anti-aliasing a bit of the inside to pad it out and thicken it slightly, or maybe just lighten the outline on the elbow and the tail by a shade. There is also a very real possibility that I'm just seeing something no one else is, but it's worth mentioning to give you incentive to look at it a bit more. I would provide visual aid for it, but zooming in won't amount to much or help me make the point I'm trying to, it's really just something you notice when you look at the back on these forums and you compare it to the tail or the elbow.
Flygon's looking much spiffier, nice!
I feel like there's a lot more you could do with the Gengar as well, so I'll look at it more closely and report back in some time.
EDIT: Hey fancy that, mentions are actually pretty good at getting people to notice your edits... I think :o Speed-X
I've been looking at Gengar a lot (and even consulted one of my art-y friends [not a pixel artist, just a person that draws really good]) and the more I looked at it the more Gengar looked complete. I don't think anything really has to be done to it as it's pretty much great the way it is. At first glance it seems, as you said, "super unfinished", and I'm not sure if it's because I couldn't think of alternatives but at this point I feel like it is just about as finished as it gets. Filling the space on the head or simply wanting to add more to it is just a matter of either adding another darker shade or introducing another light source from the top front left, which isn't as much of a solution as it is an alternative.
An interesting lighting situation I could think of might be a cold, icy blue light (a ghostly will-o-wispy blue fire kind of situation) from the bottom front left with a dimmer neutral light from the top front left, but you did have a specific light source in mind while shading this so I say just leave it the way it is and play with the light sources again on another pixel over.

Thanks, Luis! Okay, so I did actually toy with Gengar's light a bit because yeah, it would look cool if the light source were cooler like a wisp or something. I think it turned out very interestingly but at the same time I'm not certain on how I feel about it. Ah well.
http://i.imgur.com/mv80PwF.png
I started on Feraligatr (I'm planning on making the light source be orange-ish, like a sunset, and to be coming from the right side while vertically in the middle), but I got distracted because I really like Luis' attempt at doing one of those HD sprites of Rhydon. I figured it would be fun, trying to HD a style that's long-outdated.
I'm also starting to see what you mean about diagonal lines seeming thinner. Especially after making these two guys:

Yellow Nidorino was a bit of a pain. There's just SO MUCH ANTI-ALIASING and noise on the Yellow sprites that I had to do a little guesswork as to what was supposed to be what.
And that external AA'ing that I always go on about does exist here in order to imitate the style better, before anyone says anything. ;p

I think the gengar palette shift to a cool lighter shade really worked. It looks less empty now, somehow. xD
Ugh, that anti-aliasing... Just...doesn't look good. XD They were n00bs at spriting back then, though, so we can forgive them. I love the nido renditions. It's funny how far across that nidorina's (our) left leg is. xD Looks like it's disconnected, almost. (Which I'm saying is the original sprite's fault, btw.)

They both look great! There's a lot less to comment on when you sprite off a reference haha. My only gripe with Red!Nidorino is that the eyes seem to have lost a bit of ferocity compared to the original, but that's no big deal. I think the slight curve upwards should be more of a slight curve downwards, because that's what the original suggests at a glance.
And you're totally right about Nidorino's Yellow sprite. It definitely could've used a lighter shade for the shadow to make the details less obscure, but you've done a good job of making the palette work in your favour! The heavy antialiasing and disconnecting lines only really worked with the gray palette to be honest.
Also I'd prefer to be called Darren, but if you're more at home calling me Luis (because I unfortunately did this to myself as a child) then I guess that's fine! :D

They all look great!... or as great as they can look considering the source! Honestly though, you've captured the original, wonky charm in most of the pixel overs. If I had to be nitpicky and suggest possible improvements in my opinion, it would be mainly for Bulbasaur and Pikachu.
Bulbasaur is a dangerous case of interpretation, because I always thought that the eyes were supposed to look the way you've portrayed them and that's how I thought they were when I played the original games, but open closer inspection I feel like the eyes aren't as wildly off-model as I once thought. Basically, I think that if we look at the sprite more closely and think about the original art and what they may have been going for, something like this might be a bit closer:
http://i.imgur.com/zFZ2x5p.png
(I scratched that really quickly, but I think you get the point)
As for Pikachu, it's just that the ears look a little thicker than they do on the original sprite and that the gaze (the white pixels in the eye) should be about a pixel or two lower, but these are entirely negligible nitpicks. Though in the case of the ears, I feel like there's something about the thickness that makes them look a little shorter or a little off. In all honesty though Pikachu's already super adorable with its little darkened feet and roundness so I'm almost making flaws up for the sake of saying something at this point...
Also this prompted me to look at the Green sprites again, and I think I'm going to dibs Venusaur and Machoke and sprite them when I have time. They've been dibs'd, ok! :P
SassySnivy
07-11-2015, 03:14 PM
Hey, thanks Luis! :D I actually am trying to make these interpretations as literal as reasonably as I can, but I do agree that the Pokemon Green sprites are VERY interpretation-based! Like for instance I always thought the cue-ball trainer on Red and Blue had like his penis or something sticking out from his crotch AND IT STILL LOOKS THAT WAY I MEAN WHAT THE **** ELSE COULD THAT BE
But I actually did try that suggestion and I really like how that turned out, too, so I saved it as an alternate. Looking back at it, the eyes being meant to be like that ACTUALLY MAKES PERFECT SENSE. I was wondering why there was a pixel of white in an area that looked out of place!
http://i.imgur.com/sUh50el.png
I also fixed Pikachu's ear problem, because yeah I don't think Pikachu's ear length in the HD sprite matched the interpreted ear length in its original. :D

I also began to get bored with these and really got inspired by the TCG again so I decided to work on Gym Heroes some more. IT'S GOING TO BE A WHILE UNTIL I GO BACK TO TRYING MAGNETON BECAUSE GAAAAHHHHH Magneton is really dark and the background is really dark and it's very difficult to distinguish where details need to be. I also apparently skipped over Lt. Surge's Fearow. :P

Then according to the general Holo background style in the Gameboy Color game, it kinda follows a certain yet random pattern.

You might've overdone the aliasing on the left eye, it's a little blurry. The design is a lot cuter and accurate though! Game Freak had us fooled the whole time; thinking they can't even sprite Pokemon 001 properly. (Also I think the Cue Ball is supposed to have a crotch guard kinda thing, like WarGreymon's (http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/digimon/images/4/49/WarGreymon_b.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20090127185540) y'kno)
Not much to say about the TCG Pixel Overs other than the fact that they look fantastic and are virtually perfect :P You do the holo effects and the old-school watercolour shading style really REALLY well on such a small canvas, picking all the right colours! Edit: actually, since GBC uses 15-bit RGB (High Color), all I would really need to do is set my color settings in GraphicsGale to 15bpp. :p And even then it's such a minute difference that the only instance in which it would matter would be in the technical instance, lol

Thanks, Gigi! I figured that having a challenge like this would be a little too difficult. x] There are a lot of things I have to keep in mind while making these. But I'm glad that WAR refueled your interest in pixel art!
http://orig05.deviantart.net/668b/f/2015/199/9/3/051__132_lt__surge_s_spearow_by_speedxaaa-d91tcc8.png http://orig08.deviantart.net/dbe2/f/2015/199/3/8/052__132_misty_s_poliwhirl_by_speedxaaa-d91uoug.png
Just general rules of thumb I follow since I feel like sharing. xD
Keep it under 8 colors. Sometimes you need to just get really creative with this. Remember how during WAR I said not to over-dither? Obviously, you don't want to dither to the point that you can't tell what's what, but you still want to do considerably more dithering that you usually would with pixels.
Make the image to-scale so that the Pokemon will look larger on the pixel-over. A lot of the times, even if the Pokemon IS the main focus, it will still look too small when downsized. Gradually cut off either side of the original artwork, then (if you're in paint), resize the image. Go to the pixels tab, make sure that you have "maintain aspect ratio" checked. Type in 64 in the top box (horizontal.) If the bottom box doesn't automatically fill in as "48," then keep touching it up until it does so. Sometimes if there really isn't much of a background and the Pokemon really IS the main, center-focus of the artwork, I'll keep cutting off the sides and then cut off some of the top/bottom sides of the original art until the aspect ratio is correct when I go to resize it. This way the Pokemon is large enough to be translated well into pixel art. This is a little different if the Pokemon isn't the main focus of the art, though, and you sometimes just have to use discretion here.
I usually make a separate layer for the 64 x 48 px image, lower the opacity (just enough that I can both see what I'm doing AND what the original art has done), then make a layer over it and trace. I like to get the line art, maybe even the base colors of the Pokemon down first. Then I worry about blocking in the background. I usually start with the darker shapes and move to lighter ones. Once that's all done, I go back and refine it. Finally, I give the Pokemon shading and make sure all the colors are in check. if not, sometimes I have to do some pretty interesting things to BOTH keep the color count down AND make sure that the final result looks nice. It needs to be relatively minimalistic but not too minimalistic.
Imitate the original artist's style to the best of your ability. An example here is Sugimori's old watercolor-esque style of art. It uses harsh highlights and doesn't usually have much shading. However, sometimes you do want to add a little shading in large spaces so that that space that just consists of one solid color doesn't look too...eh, empty.
Don't forget the white border around the Pokemon. This varies depending on the style and background. For example, this Houndour by Starturds (http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc376/IndigoJeans/HoundourTCG.png) does better without the borders around Houndour since it would take away from the effect of the background. This Onix (http://i.imgur.com/WqLV6Uk.png) also doesn't utilize the white borders, again because of how the background interferes with the Pokemon. It just would look really odd. This Golem, (http://i.imgur.com/guI47Z8.png") however, benefits from the white border because of how
Only don't use it if you feel like it would take too much away from the result and/or if it just...doesn't look right. Most of the lineless art styles translate fine without the borders.
Never use pure black or pure white. Since you have that white border around your Pokemon most of the time, feel free to use the black color in the background where necessary...or even the white!
Be conservative with your colors, but don't be TOO conservative. If you can afford to add a color, and not adding it would take away from the finished product, then just add the color and see if there's anywhere else you can add it to give it some more life. I went and used the tan and the pale orange that was used on this Spearow (http://i.imgur.com/RhuKfbO.png) on the background, as well. Just helps make the palette more unified.
Unification is a little more important than color conservation. If the palette isn't at all unified, keep messing with it. Here's another cool example of reusing colors: Starturds' Murkrow. (http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc376/IndigoJeans/MurkrowTCG.png) If you look, you might notice that he's used some of the tan and yellow colors in Murkrow's feathers. Adds a little bit of color to it.
Make sure that, in general, the Pokemon is relatively easy to distinguish from the background.
Oh, they take about 30 minutes or so, give or take (usually give) several minutes. I've also started a Google Sheets file (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FVm8587vXIWnqp0QLD_wlYLwHVKP3pd0FmRGkuQcGKY/edit?usp=sharing) to keep track of progress and I might even start a project at some point. I guess I'll have to see! Nonetheless it's good to have everything organized. I didn't include some of my sprites because I personally feel like they could be redone (namely Neo Discovery Houndoom). I also didn't include ALL of Starturds original ones he made for the same reasons: some need reworking on just redoing altogether.
Since I'm doing these in order, next-up is Misty's Poliwhirl. (http://pokebeach.com/media/Misty's-Poliwhirl-Gym-Heroes-53.jpg)

Dang it's gotten quiet here, and I haven't even done anything to help!
The TCG Pixel-overs look great as usual! The water effect on Tentacool is super neat, and they're all very reminiscent of the actual card. If I had to pick something to well, pick at, it would be that the shape on Starmie's inner protrusions (that surround the core) don't always communicate the shape too clearly since you only have so many pixels to work with, but besides that negligible point it looks really good too!

And while this is a bit of a disorganized mess, I wanted to create a static sprite for each type of Swim Chao for each of the three views (front, back, profile) before I even fathomed making sheets for them.
http://i.imgur.com/IqTEZzh.png
Top row: Neutral Swim Chao
Second row: Neutral Swim + Normal Chao, Swim + Swim, Swim + Fly, Swim + Run, Swim + Power
Third row: Neutral Swim + Swim / Run Chao, Swim + Swim / Power, Swim + Fly / Run, Swim + Fly / Power
Let me explain what's going on in that last row, there.
The four Chao stats (Swim, Fly, Run, Power) are separated by two different bars. There's one bar that's a Swim <-> Fly, and the other is Run <-> Power. Swim cancels out Fly, Run cancels out Power, and vice versa. Therefore, it is entirely possible for a Chao to have a hybrid second evolution. Basically, it's like an even mix between two second evolutions. So yeah.
I made all of these thanks to this handy-dandy thing I compiled:

While I'm planning on cross stitching one GB style pixel art of every Pokemon, before I do that I have a simpler idea, and I was curious if you could do energy cards for Darkness, Fairy and Dragon like they did in the game for the original seven types? I already have a Metal energy for that, but I'd like all 11 to use as decorations around other images.

A NEW CHAO GARDEN?!?!?! It's about freaking TIME! How the hell did they have such an awesome part of an iconic Sonic game (well, multiple) in 2001 and they haven't recreated it fourteen years later? What??? Are they stupid or do they want their games to fail? Lol. Not that it's ENTIRELY hinged on Chao Gardens, but it's a preeeetty huge part of Sonic Adventure/2.
I love those little chao sprites. c: I'm always going to be obsessed with chao raising... I've raised every type in nearly every colour... So seeing those sprite sheets makes me really happy. ^_^ Hehe. <3

Yup, Sonic World's Chao Garden is pretty cool, albeit a little buggy, the controls are slippery and the turning radius is awful, and the fact that the dev team never seems to listen to any genuine feedback.
Yeah, I think that's what 85% of SA2 players are wondering now hahah
I both understand why there wasn't more variety in the Chao sprites in the Tiny Chao Garden and don't understand. You can transfer any Chao from SA2B to TCG; you'd think they would have at least gone out of their way to make sprite sets for Dark, Hero, and maybe even Chaos Chao as well. Oh well.

Wait, isn't Sonic World a fan game? xD I just looked it up. I thought you meant an official game. Gawd, if the FANS have to make something that is so PLAIN OBVIOUSLY WANTED in the main games, then that's just sad. You're sad, Sonic Team. And you suck.
Yeah... It is a little weird. xD I mean, the Sonic sprite sheets are so complex already! Adding a few more chao can't be hard... o_O
Cool element sprites, by the way! xD

Did that destroy you from the inside out? Did that tear your innards from their resting place and tie them in knots? Did you start bleeding sorrow for the lost quality? Did your eyes roll to the back of your head while you foamed at the mouth? Did your muscles seize up and your eye begin to twitch?
Just wondering. That's what would have happened to me. I feel your pain. <3
But in all seriousness, I really do like those berries. A lot! I think (I THINK) I like the berries with the thick black outlines the most, probably because they're stylised and cool. c: Your POs are amazing as all hell like usual, and I especially have a fondness for that mareep! (Or "macreep" as sometimes my brothers and I refer to them; in Pokemon Channel, there's a "guess what this pokemon is" game and as a trick answer, it said "macreep" which my brother accidentally selected one time. Good story.)

Hahah, nah. Once the demo is released I'll reveal the first 0 berries since they'll already be implemented into a published version of the game...so assuming a certain couple of sleazy pokemon fan game devs DO take these for their own game, illegally, then there will be a timestamp to prove that it was for CF.
Thanks a bunch you guys! I'm also kinda excited because I'm going to be reopening commissions soon.

Trainer17: ahahah, I have multiple online families ;3 PXR is my primary.
Thanks! I personally enjoy the Pokemon black and white sprites, to be honest. Sure they did have to take shortcuts with animating, but that's 600+ individual sprites to animate; animating by hand would be a nightmare! Plus the sprites were meant to have a much more simplified shading style so that they could be easier to animate and recolor. Efficiency is key! :3 But hahah, I understand. Thank you a bunch though!
@Xanthe: I got a handful of people during the weekend I started, but that's because I advertised on DeviantART! I made sure to look for journals of people looking for certain commission types, mainly icons since those are in super high demand. Then I just kinda abandoned it. D: But I'm definitely more serious about it, now...we're getting a little low on money.

Used the shiny Snivy to make my icon on DeviantART. I think I ought to make more, because the sparkling effect is simple, effective, and kinda fun. :D

Bayleef's GS sprites are so, so weird. They're so disproportionate; did you know that Bayleef has the same exact sprite between both Gold and Silver? Crystal made a completely new sprite that's more true to Bayleef's design.
Another interesting thing to note that I just found out--kinda related but kinda not--is that apparently when Sugimori was first asked to create the official artwork for Pokemon in Red and Green, the only references he had were the sprites. That's the only thing he worked off of, and obviously changed things up where he saw fit. This is probably one big reason why Green sprites are infamous for being inaccurate...still, though, it makes you wonder what they were thinking with Red. Were red's sprites created after Sugimori drew up the official art? :o I mean Red and Green's sprites are so strikingly different in design.
He then says that when he was first assigned to do the artwork for the pokemon back in the Red & Green days it was for the official guide books that going to go on sale soon. The only artwork that existed at the time were the sprites that had been ripped from the games and so Mr. Sugimori had to go through all that pixel art, one by one, and draw the pokemon based on these sprites. During this time he would change parts of the pokemon he didn't like for whatever reason. The book doesn't expand on this at all, but I imagine he's talking about things like the position of the skull and crossbones on Dogas' body or how Fushigisou stands on four legs instead of two.

But yeah, I'm getting a little off-subject.
On Relic Castle I've been trying to catch back up with the High Resolution Sprite Project, and I'm starting by quality-controlling all of the sprites that I critiqued months ago but were never fixed by the creators. I've only got Bulbasaur and Ivysaur done, but so far they're such big edits that I may as well consider them as originals.

Beautiful, as always, Speed. I NEVER noticed how disproportionate the Gold/Silver bayleef sprite was! I also never realised it was the same one. Also is it the ONLY pokemon whose sprites are the same between Gold and Silver? (Also the Crystal quilava is messed... O_o) But seriously, beautiful work, as always. <3 I LOVE the ivysaur, and the rest, of course. All so brilliant. :D I REALLY like the little icons you posted that look detailed, BEAUTIFULLY coloured and shaded, and so effective! (The snivy and nidoran a few posts up.) Just stunning! :D

Hey there! So I got hooked on Slime Rancher the other day.
I was playing around a little bit, here. Obviously Slimes are very simple in design, so I wanted to really emphasize on the shading. I went for a mix between the official style and a soft, anti-aliased look.
I really didn't care about the colors in this much...the Puddle and Pink have 15, but the Phosphor has 25!
Figured since most slimes are monochrome, I'd have a little fun with that. I actually did try hue-shifting like I usually do, but it doesn't actually work for this soft style. Had fun with anti-aliasing here, as you can tell with the Phosphor slime. Lawl

Thanks, Xanthe! And given the latest installments in the Skype chat...I think you know how I feel about the managers of Smogon's XY Sprite Project. To spare everyone the details...uh, let's just say that they're horrible people. Just read this page and make your own judgments. (http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/xy-sprite-project-read-1st-post-release-v1-0-on-post-3243.3486712/page-131) So many things wrong with that page, I just can't even comprehend. Anyway read that and I think you'll understand why I want to spite them. I will not stand for such injustice. Call me immature, but I genuinely enjoy this kind of petty revenge.
SO! Out of spite mostly, I'm going to fix up all of their "finalized" sprites. This is in NO way meant to offend or is meant to be spiteful against the contributors, as many talented people contributed to this project and all did their best. It's just that, whenever you have managers of the project that blatantly SUCK at what they do, you know your project is going to hell.
On the top are the originals, created by the Smogon XY Sprite Project. The bottom ones are my fixes.

I didn't fix Chesnaught, the Fennekin line, or Froakie, because to be 100% honest, they are completely fine from what I can tell.
http://i.imgur.com/nvWApJg.png
Frogadier is a WIP (on on the right is my fixes, original on top-left). It's really funny because with a couple of these sprites (Frogadier and Fletchinder), it looks like it was traced over directly from the XY models...and with the BW style, that's a no-no. I thought I'd need to pretty much redo Frogadier because of this, but even just making minor tweaks, it looks alright. I fixed the legs too.
These all are open to any nitpicks and criticism, UNLIKE SOMEONE's project. Gee, I wonder who that might be. Please also note that I DID NOT ORIGINALLY CREATE THESE. These are only fixes.
I'm going to finish the Prism sprites now...then I'll post in that Neon Lights project thread I had almost forgotten about. D:

I don't think I've actually ever said this to you, but I've been meaning to for a while; your sprites are absolutely top-tier. They're some of the best I've ever seen. What I like even more is that you use your talent to try new twists on sprites, like the TCG pixel overs (my favourite of which is that adorable Snorlax); I remember I tried doing one of your 50% sprites for Sceptile and I failed miserably. The fact you can do these things - and to such a high standard as well - shows how immensely talented you are. :D

Um, well judging by that Pidgeotto, I'd say GF doesn't know how angles and perspective work, either. XD From the way its wings are angled, they're in different positions. Just looks kinda odd. Also I meant Fletchinder's right wing, that's why I named it. :p
Um...I don't know if an actual image of a bird would help...only now I can't find one I'm after. :/ This (https://img0.etsystatic.com/064/0/5700035/il_fullxfull.773519190_eqi3.jpg) seemed closest. See how the alignment of the wings are parallel to the body?

And wow, does yours look batter. xD So much flipping better! Nicely done, Speedy. :D I LOVE the little adjustments you did--and you're right, it's a brand new sprite now. SoooooooOOOOOOOOOOOooooooo much better than the original, no offence to that guy. However the metal plates look like they should sit further up and point when they're level with the shoulders.

It's a bit hard to tell with prespective, but yeah, every image I've seen looks like the plates point level with the shoulder. Not only that, but they're longer than in the sprite, too. There's this one drawing from DeviantART which appears to have been the reference for that original sprite where the metal sits a lot lower.

Yay. c: IT IS SUPER STRANGE. What the heck. And yeah, like...I get the aerodynamic thing, but it's still so weird. XD Also I wonder if its mega tail is meant to be rippling like that all the time, of it that's just a "flying through the air" effect. XD

I really like how the MegaMence Sprite doesn't reflect the actual in game Sprite so much. Like, I get where you're basing it off of, but it's cool nonetheless to see the MegaMence with legs and everything.

I didn't know MegaMence had feet either... x: Suicune's Fire I JUST THOUGHT IT HOVERED ALL THE TIME UNNECESSARILY.

Thanks, guys! Yeah, I made Treecko a little while back ago. Added Combusken and Blaziken; going to post the entire sheets here so you guys can see all of the ones that have been finished. x]

Yeah, your sprite collection is HUGE!!! There's so many it's a little tricky to keep track of all of them. XD They're definitely all very awesome, though!

54 finished so far. Ironic how I've made about 100 more of the high-res sprites, no? These little ones take between 15 to 30 minutes, while the big ones take 30 minutes to an hour.
And thanks as always!
