Hello, good members, and welcome to the GCEA One Year Commemoration Sprite Contest!
As you may have gathered from the title, this contest is to celebrate GCEA's one year birthday at PXR. Yes, this is a sprite contest, so get your pixels ready and use that imagination!

About the Contest!
In this wonderful GCEAOYCSC, you will be designing and making your own hypothetical pre-evolved form of either of the Legendary Pokémon, Kyogre or Groudon! You can do both if you like, and enter both sprites. You can have references to their Primal forms if you like, but that's entirely up to you. As long as you design a pre-evolved form and sprite it yourself, that's all we're asking for.

There will be two winners--one will be the winning Kyogre pre-evolution sprite, and the other will be a Groudon pre-evolution sprite.

In order to win, you will need to succeed in these areas:

Creativity
Neatness
(includes shading, smooth lineart and colouring)
Effort
Likeness to Groudon/Kyogre


You need only make one sprite that is either a pre-evolution of Groudon or a pre-evolution of Kyogre in order to enter and possibly win,
BUT
you are perfectly within your rights to make and submit BOTH a pre-evolution of Groudon and a pre-evolution of Kyogre if you like. It is possible for BOTH of your sprites to win.

As a prize, if you win, you will receive the following:

Your sprite will be featured in all three Hoenn GCEAs! (Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald.)

It is possible to win the Groudon pre-evolution AND the Kyogre pre-evolution side of the contest. In which case, the winner will receive this twofold, with the exception of the second Pokémon being a different species than another Ditto.

*This first prize relies on people being able to give Shadow Tracker Max a valid postal address. If this is not possible, you will win 60 points and an extra free Pokémon of your choice.


The contest begins on the 16th of June, 2014 and closes on the 30th of June.


Rules:

All PXR rules apply!
You may only enter a maximum of two sprites into the contest. However, in this circumstance, it needs to be ONE Kyogre pre-evolution and ONE groudon pre-evolution. You may not submit two Groudon pre-evos or two Kyogre pre-evos.
Your sprite must be in by the deadline
You must not use NON-OFFICIAL sprites! This means, do not use any sprites that are not in the games unless you've made them yourself! Basically, don't use sprites you didn't make or that aren't from the game.

Actual pre-evolution for the normal sprite. However if you want to create pre-evolutions for the new primal color patterns go ahead. As long as they are pre-evolutions and not just different version of the new primal devolutions.

Sorry that was unclear, DM! However if the Primal forms were part of the contest as a requirement, I'd have said so. xD The pre-evolutions don't have to have anything to do with the Primal Forms; forget they even exist in this context.

Except maybe for the featuring, just cause i like to leave my mark. Just hypothetically speaking, would that be okay? its disappointing how long I spent working on this compared to how disappointingly not as good as I expected it to be it looks. took me like an hour and 15 minutes, a half hour alone spriting and respriting the tail to make it suck as little as possible.

Time well spent, friend. xD Only with lots of experience can you sprite quickly and to the same standard. That pyroar in my signature would have taken me well over an hour. I remember when I did that pixel art of that lady which I think you saw...that took hours upon hours upon hours. I sort of wish I documented just how long it took me. XD It was a very long time.

That being said, you may change your entry at any point until the due date. :] So if you truly are unsatisfied, you may resubmit it within the next two weeks and it'll be accepted.

Spriting is not my strongest suit, but I made these today, A Dolphin-Kyogre and a Hyogre-Centipede.

Before Kyogre was a powerful Killer whale, it used to be a graceful dolphin frolicking in the ocean.
Before Groudon evolved it spent it's life scurrying through the dirt as a bug.

Made the Dolphon-Kyogre from scratch, using Kyogre colour template.
Just ripped apart Groudon sprite and added bits to turn it into a bug.

It has 15 colors. Also, good LORD it was really difficult to try to get the alpha character on its head to have the correct angling. Still failed, but at least I tried.

I'll only be doing one for Kyogre.
Also, my explanation: I'm sure you may be wondering why its design is based on Primal Kyogre. Let's take a look-sie, shall we? Primal / Ancient Kyogre is, as its name suggests, what it looked like in ancient times, presumably around its time of creation / birth. Assuming that it was born from an Egg as a different species / baby version, it would have been in ancient times. Sooo...Primal Kyogre is what it originally looked like. Plus this also implies that Kyogre is literally one-of-a-kind, is ever-living, and is not actually able to reproduce, unlike some legendaries that aren't as significant (Lati duo, etc). Yes, I know no legendary can reproduce in-game, but it's always been hinted at in movies, the anime, and spin-off games and main series games (since, after all, why would Moltres appear in like three different regions at three different times if it supposedly originates from just one of the said regions) that there is some way that some legends CAN, in fact, reproduce. However I like to think of the weather trio as being some of the very original legends. Buuuuttt yeah. Just a little bit of headcanon there.

I'd like to see more entries, too, at least for Groudon! Said Pokemon has a much more complicated design than Kyogre and it would be really cool to see more emtries for. Kinda like how Brettles' is, maybe you could go for something like a lava wyrm-like design? Or some kind of larval being. Of course its not up to me, just trying to throw out some ideas here!

I used the pokemons basic sprite and tried to stick to what I thought it would look like. I also used Groudon's normal color scheme. Im not very skilled at Spriting but I felt like a created a happy pokemon! Hope you enjoy!

Comments: This sprite doesn't appear to have much effort put into it. The things is, you mostly made it a midget and took away some of its features, which doesn't constitute a pre-evolution. You're just snipping parts off and then forgetting to clean up the edges. Good try, but unfortunately it lacks in many ways.

Comments: It's funny because I actually liked this one more than the previous one, and gave you more points for creativity mostly due to the fact that it didn't look like its base sprite with a few edits. However, what lost you points wasn't just the fact that it's in .jpg format, which distorts the image, but that you simply stuck a groudon's head onto a riolu sprite and then copy-pasted the same arm for both arms. It's very messy and doesn't meld together at all, as well as being blurry.

Comments: Not bad! The main thing was that it was fairly standard. It looks like a kyogre with a few chopped-off features but I know you spent a long time doing the tail. So good effort. :] There are a few places where the shading should have been adjusted, such as on the chin where one of the spiky parts used to be. The shading only curls around like that because there was a protrusion there. Anyway, fairly decent entry, if not a little too simple! Nice job.

Comments: I cannot unsee Batman... xD I don't know why, but when I look at this sprite, that's what comes to mind. I like that you tried to go for a "babier" feel and got rid of the spikes, but that really just left it feeling naked in places. I like that you edited the head and it doesn't have the same armour plating design, but that's all you really altered. That face tho. xD The awkward mouth just makes me lol.

Comments: Not a bad score! The fact that it didn't look like a traditional pokemon sprite and was side-on subtracted a few points from the total. It isn't the neatest sprite out there and shading is pretty non-existent, but I love that you went for a completely different approach. The dolphin look is quite accommodating for the kyogre patterning. I really like the idea, but the sprite itself isn't top-notch. But very good try. :]

Comments: This thing. Is terrifying. xD But I like it because it's different. By no means does it look like a groudon pre-evolution though. XD I marked you highly in creativity because I'd never have expected anything like it, however. Comments: Brilliant work. :] The sprite work itself was amazing, as is expected from you, and I loved all of it. I also liked that you went with a primal approach to the sprite; it really showed how much thought about a pre-evolution and what that would mean. The only thing I can see about it is that the fin on the left could be positioned slightly flatter, but that's more of a preference thing. I also sort of find it peculiar that there are highlights on the opposite sides of the fins to the light that shines on its head. Aside from that though, top stuff!

Comments: This is fairly cute. The design looks more like a style choice, however, as opposed to actually going with a fresh design. I can see you altered a lot, so that's a plus, and I also like the primal elements you went with. The sprite is fairly neat and nice looking, so well done for that. It doesn't look like a pre-evolution to me, though. More like a cuter regular groudon with glow-in-the-dark issues. xD

Comments: To be honest the design looks like a cuter version of a regular groudon with a slightly misshapen head. XD I do like it, but there are many clumps of pixels that aren't very neat, and although I can see you put a lot of effort into it, it wasn't enough of a pre-evolution to score higher.
