View Full Version : HD Sprite Pixel Over project.

NOTE: Since Generation VI started introducing everything in 3-D and the only 2-D graphics exist as fan-made sprites, we will not be including the Kalos Pokemon or Mega Evolutions at this time.

Tutorial Links

If you would like to contribute but are not too confident about your knowledge on pixel art, I recommend--HIGHLY RECOMMEND--going through this (http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=11299) and this thread. (http://www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=5692&PN=1) The first one will explain pixel art overall in a very easy to understand manner. The second one is more so optional: it goes over nitpicks and pointers relating to pixel art.

I also have a link to a tutorial (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?380-HD-Sprite-Pixel-Over-project&p=6304&viewfull=1#post6304)--made by a contributor--and a video guide (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?380-HD-Sprite-Pixel-Over-project&p=6353&viewfull=1#post6353)--made by me. Please take note that these two tutorials / guides use two different methods of getting the job done. Please feel free to do what you wish, but please make sure to read my note (on that post that had the video links in it) about the method that Protobabe is using. ^^; Thanks! c:

-----------------

Hey guys! I wanna be able to post a project here, maybe to gather together any pixel artists around here.

Anyways, if you are aware of pixel art, it's possible that you are aware of the concept of pixel-overs: they are pretty much traces, but converted into a pixel art form / style.

As of late, I've been pixelling over existing Pokemon sprites--usually Ruby and Sapphire ones--via enlarging them and portraying the proportions and shading of the original sprite as close as possible to the original. This is best done with a program that supports layers and/or opacity, but whatever works for you is fine as well.

You need to make sure you mimic the original style (shading style especially) as well and as closely to the original as you can.

I've done quite a few of these myself; for examples, please see this post (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?334-Speed-s-Pixel-Cluster&p=3081&viewfull=1#post3081) in my gallery. However, I was hoping to maybe get others interested in this; it's really pretty fun in a sense.

I honestly do not have any specific rules pertaining to this thread and this thread alone, at least not as of yet. However, please do be aware of the following:
Take the sprite you're wanting to pixel over, and enlarge the overall image by 200% (x2). From there, you can, if applicable, paste it into a program such as Graphics Gale, change the opacity / alpha of that layer to be lower, and then add a layer above that to be able to trace over the original, hassle-free. However, you may of course feel free to do this in any way you wish...just so long as it works for you!
I only plan on us using the official sprites from Black 2 and White 2, for now.
Try to include the gender differences separately, if you can. This isn't as big of a deal for Pokemon with smaller gender differences, such as Sneasel or Aipom; however, it's very, VERY encouraged that you create one of both genders for Pokemon that have vast differences, such as Hippopotas or Frillish.
Please do the best that you can with successfully executing the overall artistic style used in the official sprites. Heavy referencing is recommended!
And finally, I will quality-control these; after all, if I didn't, where would the challenge be? Plus, art is all about self-improvement, and upon not doing quality control that would ruin the purpose of it being a community project! c:
You may reserve up to four Pokemon at one time (just do whatever you think you can handle); this reservation will last for approximately a week. If this week has expired and you are still trying to work on it, please say so in this thread and your reservation will be renewed. If it's obvious that you're just trying to take up space, however, then your reservation will not be renewed.
Shiny versions are not required, but appreciated!
Please use pretty much the exact colors provided by the original sprite in your pixel over. Feel free to maybe edit some things / alter some colors around slightly if you feel that it will look better for the larger image (for instance, more anti-aliasing in some places for the pixel over; or maybe those two colors don't appear to contrast as well in your version, so you heighten the contrast JUST enough)

The list will be arranged so that any Pokemon that have not yet been completed / added will not be included in the list, therefore making navigation easier; additionally, this is so it won't take up an unnecessary amount of space!

What i do is take the original sprite and paste it in a program whose canvas size conforms to the size of an image pasted / is easy to change (Paint); I then crop the image down so that the very edges of the original sprite are touching the canvas border...this isnt required, its just so you don't have to work with uneccessarily larger images.

Anywhoo, select the entire image and enlarge the overall size by 200%; copy this, then repaste it onto that same file. Find out what the dimensions of the image are (since Graphics Gale uses preset, non-conforming canvas sizing); start a new file in Gale withose dimensions. Paste it and then lower the opacity down to around twenty percent. Add a new layer, and trace over the enlarged original sprite in that new layer. Try to make it look as similar as possible, but some things can be altered or added if it would make it look better in a larger pixel art size.

That's just my method, though, but you do still need to enlarge the original, find a way to trace over it, then copy the shading as closely as possible. That's pretty much all there is to it, actually.

I've got this custom Bulbasaur pixel over from a few years ago. I can edit it at some point if you want just a normal Bulbasaur, but that'll have to wait until my school work loosens up. So is it possible for me to reserve Bulbasaur? :)

I will keep that in mind. c:

Guess I'll reserve Scraggy.
Okay. It's a pretty good start, but make sure to focus on things on more of a pixel level than a sprite level. I get what you were trying to do there, but a lot of the lines are very jagged and a few of the shapes are really "out there."

I will add your reservation for Scraggy. :D

I think I'm going to add a link to a couple of tutorials for general pixel art. c:

Just out of curiosity, would it maybe be helpful to provide a video for how I do these? ^^; Not implying anything, just seeing what you guys think! O w O

Edit: Oh, right, I can't believe I forgot: I have Tepig finished. ^^;

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT PROGRAM JUST FREAKING DID THAT.

I recorded the WHOLE thirty minutes or so that it took to make that Cottonee, and then when I go to save the video it says there was an error.

ARGGGHHHH!! Does anyone know of a good screen capture program that can take videos that last a long time? I'm such a noob when it comes to creating videos and shizz.

Okay, let's...slow down a bit. First thing's first: we've...really gotta fix the lineart on Shinx.
You are off to a great start: you mimicked the shading relatively well.

However, a lot of the line segments are very wonky and jagged. Since I'm not too great with explaining things, I will upload a GIF image that shows the main problem points. First, however, I will link you / quote a section in those threads I linked to that kinda explain jagged edges and basically how to round them off, for the most part.

Jaggies:
Jaggies occur when a pixel or group of pixels are out of place, interrupting the flow of a line. Jaggies can also occur when a line lacks anti-aliasing. Jaggies get their name from the jagged lines that they create. More broadly, jaggies are the result of any bad pixel technique, but they are most often discussed in reference to line work, so that is the context in which they will be discussed here.

How to fix jaggies:

Changing the length of the lines

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g209/phototekcub/jaggiesreduxgif.gif

often times the problem is just that a segment of the line is too short or too long, and it creates an awkward jump. Using a more uniform length of pixels to smooth the transition is the solution here.
Some jagged lines cannot be helped, which is where anti-aliasing would need to be used, but I'll get into that at a later time.

Heh, sorry I'm using other sources to explain myself better. To be honest, that's the best way I know how to do things, is to, if possible, link to someone who has stated their point in better words than I could myself.

The main problem points are at both of Shinx's ears and its back leg, for the most part. Those are the two most prominent areas. c: Lemme know if I need to clarify something / elaborate / etc...or something! ^^;

Could you possibly show me where the problem spots are? As I've said, I'm new at this. I also realize that you may not use a lot of my pixel work, but it's so fun that I just kept going XD I won't be offended one bit if you don't use it. If anything, it will be for personal use.

I also have the original files saved to be worked on for just this reason! I know I'm noobish. Would you mind possibly taking my image(s) and giving me an example spot/problem?

EDIT: Nevermind, working on things now. Hopefully they look better when I'm done ^^

Of course! That actually is what I have been working on. c:

I completely understand, and you are doing quite well for starters. :> And whether I add it or not doesn't matter quite as much as, like you said, having fun and trying to improve. :D
http://i.imgur.com/Co38ubM.gif
Okay, so as you can see here I clearly forgot to explain one important thing in the OP: yes, you do want to mimic the original sprite, but you also may want to make certain changes at your discretion. For example, the original sprite portrays Shinx's front paws as being little "nubs" (due to the fact that the sprite is small, thus some details must be spared to increase the sprite's "readability" )...but as you can see in Shinx's official art, its paws do have a rounded bulge to them where the toes are.

What I would recommend would be to draw (yes, draw XD ) just a rough lineart where the sprite's original lines are, not paying much attention to the smaller details of the lineart yet. Once you have the lines completed, this is the time for you to try to straighten everything out! Of course, like I showed above, you want to keep the contours relatively smooth and round, without any off pixels creating jagged lines.
However, this is where anatomy comes in, too! Like I said above, there are many small details that need to be spared in the game's sprites because they have to be kept within a smaller size limit. This is to enhance the "readability" of the sprite so it doesn't look like a cluttered mess! c:
However, since what you're basically doing here is making a larger, touched-up version of the original sprite, there is more room for smaller details. I would have a reference at hand of the some of the Pokemon's actual official artwork.

I had shown that in my video, but sadly the stupid program is stupid! I still gotta find a better one. D8

http://i.imgur.com/Co38ubM.gif
Okay, so going back to my alterations on the lineart...as you can see, I rounded out the ears much more, because Shinx's ears are, well, pretty round, and in your original pixel over they looked a little polygonic with those straight lines. I cleaned up jagged edges as well. As you can see, I also edited Shinx's back leg so it wasn't quite that straight and was more rounded and natural looking.

Notably I also got rid of the shading, but that was just so I could work on the lineart. :> I however, did not clean up the tail at all; I edited enough so that I felt that you would see the main idea I was trying to portray, here. ^-^b

If you would like, you can feel free to use that edited lineart I provided if you'd wish to make changes to it. I don't mind at all. c:

Oh, and I forgot to mention...I added a little bit of anti-aliasing so that the eyes didn't look so square. I swear, the eyes can be just the most tricky to get right sometimes! o A o
Oh, and I just got rid of Shinx's ankle bands because I could just add those later. So yeah, that was just a personal preference, don't mind it too much. xD

Nonsense; no need to apologize for that! I completely understand, and would probably have done the same thing myself. c:

Anyways, geez. That is a very, very large improvement. You do still have some very uncharacteristically straight edges, such as at the top of the ears, the hair tuft, and the closest foot.
Also have a few more nitpicks, if you don't mind.

Try to stay true to the original sprite, for the most part. For instance, the the majority of the farthest front foot should be outlined in black. Also, I see you have added quite a bit of unnecessary dithering; try to avoid this unless the original sprite calls for it. DS Pokemon sprites have let go of the dithering technique for the most part, since more recent generations are on consoles that allow a higher color limit. You may see dithering very rarely for texture, but for the most part you need to try to avoid it if possible. By the way, "dithering" can be described as "using a checkerboard pattern" to add some texture and/or transition one color to another. c:
The tail is kinda at a right angle. As far as the sprite goes, for the most part, the entire tail is relatively straight.

If I get around to it, I will try to find a better screen capture-video program with speaker audio, like...one that will actually freaking record the entire damned file. I swear, last time I did it I took an hour or so to finish the Cottonee; when I wrapped it up and decided to save it, it said it was invalid. =_= Gotta love technology! Not entirely from scratch, we use the base of the original Pokemon sprite. But as far as how I do it, I re-draw the image larger and repixel over that, trying to emulate the original style of the sprite. So, yes and no, I guess? Oh my god, are you freaking kidding me? THE AUDIO DID NOT RECORD. EVERYTHING IS GOING WRONG.
I'll explain, then.

Part 1
I go on to describe how much I hate technology and that this is my fiftieth try at trying to successfully record something. I show that I take the sprite and enlarge it in Paint and copy it into Graphics Gale, basically. I explained that I make a new layer, lower the opacity / alpha of the original layer, and use the layer on top to trace. I also mention that I have a tablet therefore makes drawing out the lines a little easier for me, in a way, but you guys can of course use whatever you feel comfortable with.

Since I had already finished the Ditto (and part of the Victini) in two other (unsuccessful) recordings, I explain that you want to try to make the shading as similar as possible. However, sometimes you want to add exceptions. The smaller sprites have to sacrifice some details because of the size limit: if all of the little nitpicky things were included to such an obsessive level, the sprite would be a cluttered mess, and would not be readable at all.

I then explain, with Victini, the importance of "buffer shades," aka using anti-aliasing. With Victini's original sprite, note that the two colors for its eyes look just fine. Use only those two colors for the larger version, though, and it doesn't translate well. This should be used only on rare occasions; usually I would try to use an existing shade to use for anti-aliasing, but since the blue and the rest of Victini's colors were on opposite ends of the color hue spectrum, I was forced to make my own color inbetween the two blues.

Explaining that contrast will sometimes translate differently when you are going from smaller to larger, therefore a lot of the time you may need to lower / add more contrast (by making the shade of interest lighter or darker).

I'm then explaining why I use a white outline around my work: it is mainly because it will make it look more attractive on any background color, because in a way, that white is acting as a background color. It's very difficult to, with pixel art, shade the outlines in but still make them friendly with any color of background. This is a simple solution to that.

.:MOST IMPORTANT SECTION:.
I find Protobabe's method interesting. But nonetheless, when you have pixelled over the trace you made, you still need to compare it to the original sprite and revise it when necessary. The eyes on your Raikou vs. the original is a prime example. Also, the very farthest leg.

I then explain that the lighter purple is not necessary, and warn you guys to be careful of banding and pillow-shading. View the first link in the OP if you need to know what those two things are.

Lugia's head--despite the fact that yes, it should be a little bigger because it is a little closer to the viewer than the body is--is a bit too large. I also mention that Luxio's head looks really squished.

Part 2
And I really, really like the turnout of Luxray; however, there is something that is needed to be kept in mind: always, always, always, use a bigger reference picture to look at every now and then when you do these. If you look at the pupils of the Shinx line--and trust me, at first I wasn't even aware of this, hahahah--they are not solid color. They are "hollow," so-to-speak.

I started to finish Victini to show you guys at least a little bit of how I'm doing these, but then am interrupted by an epiphany: there's something else I had to mention. at 2:42, I show you the "3, 2, 1, 2, 3" pattern that is pretty uniform for pixel art. However, sometimes, especially for slight curves and to make it so that some curves don't look like straight, polygonic angles, you need to break this streak. I show how this can be done. And then at around 6:18, I just kinda fix Luxio's foot up.

Part 3
I finish up Victini and revise things along the way.

Looking a LOT better. Just try to change the male Luxray's top tuft of mane; it looks like the two pieces are connected unnaturally. Just make it just like the female's, but longer. c: Otherwise, looking fantastic.

Luxio still looks odd though. It looks like the point of view is more at a higher view.

Raikou looks like ten times better now. c: Lugia is looking a lot better, also; just try to remember to not make those "lowlights" (the highlights on the darkest edges of Lugia. While this would be accurate if it were laying on a surface that reflects the light back, it does not, therefore they aren't needed) like you did with Raikou's mane before.

:D

Just don't forget the shinies. xD

Edit: As a side note, I have started on Panpour; going to reserve Patrat, Lillipup, and Purrloin.

That's understandable. Proto and I actually made guides showing the ways we make these; you can find the links to those posts at the top of the OP. c: I would suggest starting back from the beginning and/or starting a new Pokemon, perhaps that is just a tidbit more simple, to get the hang of it. :>

Hi! Since I haven't been swamped lately and haven't much to do, may I reserve Arcanine, please? I need to stretch my pixelling muscles. ovo

Lolz. Reserving Woobat I guess. XD I wonder if I'll actually ever finish all of the basic stage Pokemon in Unova. I'm starting to believe that will be the case. xD;

Sorry about my latent absence - here's your kickin' fiery dogs. I do hope that they're up to snuff!

I'll take the opportunity to reserve Salamence and Manectric, if you don't mind.

EDIT: Ooh - may I reserve Breloom as well?

Pretty good so far. You seem to be having a lot of awkward and jagged lines when it comes to Arcanine's mane, though. Mainly at the part of the mane that is at its "chest" area.

I would look over the resources posted on the OP to maybe get a better of idea of outlines and such (namely the first link, I believe.). I plan on, when I actually have enough free time, recording another video and posting it up. Hopefully I won't have any difficulties with the audio or the file not saving at the last minute this time.

I'm sorry for my strange wording today, I'm just a little out of it. If you'd like I can show you exactly where the "problem spots" are. ^^;

Hey guys! Sorry I've slowed down; got sort of obsessed with tabletop gaming. It sucks your life away, man. I'll work on some of these when I get time, but expect them to be a lot slower from now on.

I'm not sure if this really counts for what you're after (or if this project is even still going) as it's not a pixel-over of a sprite, but it's something I did years ago...

Nah, it wouldn't count because Speed wants to pixel over the Black and White 2 sprites. xP

Anyway, Speed, I did the HD suicune I claimed! I'm happy with it, but I'm lost about how to improve/make it awesome like yours. So please, critique away and feel free to go into depth by zooming in/touching up parts you think could be better and screenshotting the progress...if you feel like it, that is. XD

Can I claim Treecko, Grovyle and Sceptile? I haven't sprited in a long time but hopefully I'll manage to do them okay! :3

EDIT

So apparently doing these things with a trackpad is a bit horrible.

All critique is thoroughly welcome. I wanted to add so many more shades, looks so flat on a larger scale :c

I quite enjoy your sceptile! 8D Well, both of them, really. XD I definitely understand adding more shades/shading where it wasn't previously. I did that. XD I think some of your outlines could be smoothed out a little, and perhaps adding pixels of the dark shading on some parts of the inner outline would be good, to give it a little bit of softness, especially from a distance. The eye on the shiny one looks a little odd...sorta like they're really bloodshot, haha. I'm sorta unsure how to critique it further (AND SPEED DISAPPEARED) but nice job. :3 Especially with a track pad! XD

Hey you guys, I'm really thinking of picking up this project again. I'm out of my sixth-month art block, fortunately, and doing something like this sounds pretty fun right now. While the only new one I have as of now is just Blitzle, I will totally add everyone's submissions.

Xanthe, that Suicune is effing amazing. I fell in love with that the instant I saw it. I really love Tombi's Sceptile, too. Adding everything to OP.

Thank you very much! However, I merely copy the style of the original shading...well, with some necessary shading and color changes in order to make it look smoother and less choppy due to the larger size. I really only do these for fun, but thanks! ^^b
