Welcome
good pixel/sprite artists...

THIS IS THE VERY FIRST POKÉMON CROSSROADS WAR!

Here we see the mighty strength of each and every WAR team come together and clash with an echoing boom to prove their worth and emerge victorious.
How, you say? Why, through spriting with pixels, of course! What better way to express yourself than through meticulous detail placed with unwavering care?

Prepare yourselves, sons and daughters of Mew, for you shall be put to the test and graded weekly through trials of hardship! With each new week comes a new challenge, so ensure that your spriting skills are in check and your ability to produce wonderfully harmonious pixels is fired up and ready!

Grading Rubric:
Neatness: /10 Did you colour within the lines? Clean up said outlines? Are there stray pixels you forgot to colour in? Neatness is self-explanatory!
Creativity: /10 Is your sprite as boring as the beige paint that cover the walls of the café below my classroom at school? If not, you'll score highly! Don't be afraid to get creative!
Overall Look and Effort: /10 You can often gauge how much time was put into a sprite based on its overall appearance. Will you impress the judge?
Relevance: /5 This is obviously how closely your entry adhered to the theme.

Contestants who win first, second or third place will be awarded prize points for their WAR teams!
1st place - 3 points
2nd place - 2 points
There is no third place because apparently that's normal.

In the case of a tie, the point award system will remain the same, so the entries that tied will obtain the same amount of points (a.k.a. 2 points each for two entries that come second).

The WAR contest officially opens on MONDAY the 7th at 12am!

RULES:
1. . Respect your fellow artists and follow all PXR rules!

This includes NO flaming, NO bickering and NO mocking of WAR scars!
2. Stick to the theme! This is a must for entries to score highly.
3. NEW SPRITES are the way to go. No reusing old sprites that were made before WAR!
4. You are only allowed to enter one single sprite per week. You may submit an entry and edit it anytime up until the deadline.
5. ABSOLUTELY NO ART THEFT will be tolerated. Your entries must be yours alone.

I myself will sent you into a mine field and watch with a shaking head as you try to avoid what may or may not be a set of deadly explosives set to go off at the slightest touch. (A.k.a. You will be disqualified instantly.)
6. No Generations VI Pokémon are to be used!

As there are no official sprites for Gen 6, you cannot use any pokémon from that generation unless you sprite them 100% yourselves. For instance, with fusions, you may scratch on a some fennekin ears and a tail if you choose to use one (where it applies to the week's contest, of course)

Side-Notes:
- You do not HAVE to use Pokémon sprites for entries that do not specify that you need to, but it is encouraged
- Remember two of the basic but essential rules to spriting: Never, EVER save in .JPG format. Save in .PNG or your sprite's quality will be eaten alive. Secondly, never resize sprites! They are not designed to be any bigger!

WEEK ONE:
This week's theme shall be something simple to begin with. Therefore, you shall complete for me...

-- A recolour!
Choose a sprite. Any sprite! It can even be non-pokémon related. Recolour it how you wish, with whatever palette you wish. Feel free to include the palette in your entry!
Remember - You may not alter the position of the shading or the outlines. Only the colour. There are ways around the shading so don't feel like you're restricted by this rule!
Check out some winning entries from the previous WAR! (Made by 2gamers and 5TailedDemonLizard from PE2K respectively!)

WEEK TWO:
For this week, your challenge shall be...

-- A simple fusion!
For this fusion, you may choose up to three pokemon to splice together. You can use a minimum of two and a maximum of three. It can be any pokémon except those from Gen 6, unless you completely scratch all the Gen 6 parts. some, at least. No fusion can look its best without scratching!]
- You may colour it HOWEVER you like! You may use WHATEVER pokémon you like (with the Gen VI sprite exception of course xD)! Don't feel restricted. 8)

Check out some winning entries (although these were more than three pokemon mashed together) from the previous WAR! (Made by FrozenChaos from PE2K and me respectively!)

WEEK THREE:
For this week, your challenge shall be...

-- A retype!
Ever wondered what your favourite pokemon looked like as another type? No? Well who cares! This is your chance to choose a pokemon and give it another type. For this, remember that you cannot use Gen VI sprites UNLESS you use parts from a Gen 6 pokemon that you scratched yourself.

Tips:
- Scratching is key. I won't be very happy if I see a snivy with a flame stuck on the end of its tail and a simple recolour of orange. Get creative, guys! Retypes are your chance to take a pokemon and experiment with colours, features, etc. Don't be afraid to change a lot of the pokemon--just as long as it's still recognisable as the pokemon you're using, then you should be fine. :]
- Feel free to get ideas from other pokemon, but try not to just copy and paste. A bit of that is fine, just not too much. Make sure you reshade and clean it all up!

As an example, I dug up an old retype that isn't amazing but will give you an idea:

Week Four and Week Five Results and Information!

WEEK FOUR:
For this week, your challenge shall be...

-- Lineart Challenge!
This week, I want everyone to step up a little. This will take more time than previous weeks, probably, and here's why. You have to take a pokémon's outline, from any pre-existing official, in-game sprite, and erase everything inside it. You keep ONLY the outline of the sprite, and then create an entirely new sprite within those outlines. You have to be careful here, because you need to choose a pokémon with versatile outlines, otherwise you might get stuck with something that's too difficult to make into something else. In case you're wondering (Velocity), you cannot make an existing pokémon out of another pokémon's outlines. This is to prevent pokémon with common shapes from being used in other sprites' outlines, such as taking a plusle outline and making a minun within it. Not that that would work anyway, because you need to erase everything within the outlines. Only the very outer lines have to be intact and unaltered. I will be checking every outline to make sure that they are exactly the same as the sprite they were taken from. If they have been altered, then the entries will be either disqualified, or, if it's only one or two pixels, you will lose grading marks.

You may rotate the outlines in increments of 90 only. This is to avoid pixel distortion. This can be done in order to give you more anatomical options if you so desire.

Tips:
- Make anything within the lines, whether it's pokémon related or not. It can be a weird clock if you like. Make sure you colour and shade appropriately.
- I'm looking for not only creative entries, but also well done entries. Take a look on Google for some sprite tutorials on how to shade if you're unsure, or even observe an object in real life to get a bit of an idea.

As an example, Shadow Tracker Max and I completed a sprite which originally had a bulbasaur outline:
Step #1 (http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll34/goldflareon/dd_zps3f9c040e.png) ; Step #2 (http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll34/goldflareon/sp_zps88bfb25f.png)

I feel like I should give you extra points for winning all these weeks so far. xD But I can’t. Ahem.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WEEK FIVE: THE FINAL WEEK
For the very last week of WAR I, your challenge is...

-- A Scratch Sprite! With a twist
That’s right. This week, your entry has to be entirely from scratch. This means, no bases, no pre-made outlines, nothing. Just you and your empty canvas, until you form something from scratch. But that's not it. Here’s the catch.

Your sprite's palette has to be based off one single colour, which has a maximum of four shades. And what do I mean by that? I mean that, in your palette, you have to have ONLY four different variations of one colour. Just like the Game Boy Pokémon games, where you'd have a sprite that had black, white, and two other colours to it.

This does NOT mean "Oh cool, I'll use red, green, blue and yellow!" and then you have multiple shades of each colour. No, you have to choose one colour, and use four shades based around that for your entire sprite! Challenging, right? You can dance around this a little and use yellow, but then have your darker colour as an orangy-yellow, as that would still count as yellow, but only if the shades are close enough that they're not obviously two different actual colours.

Restrictions:
- Your sprite may not breach the 96x96 DS sprite dimensions. I will be checking this come judging, so don't think you can get away with an extra pixel. ;3
- If your sprite is not within the 96x96 restriction, you will lose ALL "Relevance" points in grading.
- If your sprite contains more than 4 overall colours to the palette, you will lose ALL "Relevance" points in grading.
- You may edit your sprite up until the deadline, even if it's been submitted.
- You may choose anything to sprite, as long as it fits within general PXR rules (a.k.a. have some decency).
- You must have fun. YOU MUST.

I suppose that's true that it's SORTA like a recolour, but you'll probably not win or come close if you're gonna reduce the amount of colours. xD I would not recommend it, especially since devamps are in a separate category to recolours.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how to answer this one. Changing the shading should be fine, theoretically, but if it happens to be more detailed than the starting sprite then it's a different sort of edit. You can work through the current shading but hm, for simplicity's sake, I'm going to say you can't change the shading. Hope that's okay. :]

Keep up the great entries, guys! :D

Rule #1: Always, ALWAYS save in PNG. JPG is a quality killer and you won't have a chance at winning with a sprite in that format. :/
#2: Never use sprites that have a black background. Save them, then open them in a program that can read transparency. Copying and pasting has its risks for cases like this, where the background is black and unchangeable.
#3: Never EVER resize sprites. xD Good thing you didn't resize it. Why do you think they're that size to start off? Because they're supposed to be! Being any larger would ruin the sprite's quality and intention entirely.

I'd suggest resubmitting this one because of the black background and the JPGiness. If those weren't an issue then it would be a great submission. Same with everyone else! Good work, guys!

I did like this one, but there are a few shading errors which let it down, specifically around the neck and chest area, and also down the arms. You’ve mixed up where you’ve coloured the dark shades and the light shades. xD Also the purple dress seems to start in a direct straight line across the waist, rather than using shape to your advantage. The tiny bit of light colour just below the yellow chest protrusion looks out of place and probably should have been purple. I think the whole colour scheme in general was a little too dark.

The idea was pretty basic and although you did execute it well, and it looks very clean and neat, it’s a rather basic recolour without any complexity. I couldn’t really count the blue glowiness—which is cool, but it doesn’t really apply to the whole ‘recolour’ theme considering it’s outside of the sprite. Overall, not a bad mark though. :]

I do like the idea of using inverted colours, but there are a lot of points where the colours are too light and it doesn’t really mix very well. The outlines are too light and it makes the black outlines seem incredibly unnecessary against the inverted shades which are lighter. I understand that you were working with a palette that you didn’t create, but in order for inverts to work, which they sometimes don’t considering you’re working with literally the opposite colours that the sprite is meant to have, you need to edit the palette accordingly. I know this makes it technically not a true invert, but using the same colours as the inverted palette gives you, even if it’s not the exact shades you were given, still makes it a valid invert in my opinion. Nice try though.

This one appeals to me greatly. I enjoy rainbow things, because they’re always linked with happiness for me. It’s also pretty! However, I have a little bit of a problem with the shape of each colour, and the way they sit on the dragonair’s body. Because the body is serpentine, it’s safe to say that the colours would dip down, if that makes sense, to curve around the body. But on the tail, they appear slanted and flat, and on the chest/below that, it’s curved like an upturned smile, although I suppose that’s in the spirit of the rainbow, yes? Thinking about it, it doesn’t make that much difference, but some places look more curved than others. As well as that, the end of the pink up until the orange part sort of blends, meaning you haven’t used enough variety in the lightness/darkness of the shades, and there’s an odd triangle of dark colour on the curve that looks out of place. Anyway, nice looking sprite.

I liked this one, but I think it would have looked better if the magma was using the lines between the aggron’s armour as channels for it to flow through, rather than having random streaks across it. The way the tongue and the teeth aren’t separated on the left side makes it look like the tongue is pointed and sticking out of the mouth. xD There are also black outlines everywhere. Overall not a bad submission. :]

I don’t consider infernos recolours. =/ You’re reshading and you’re getting rid of a lot of lines, which makes it more of a reshade if anything. I would have rejected this sprite as soon as you had posted it had I actually realised what you’d posted, so I do take the blame for that, but you should probably know that this isn’t a recolour. xD

The fact is, a simple recolour isn’t going to cut it when you’re up against submissions of much higher creativity and effort. Nevertheless, you did stick to the theme. One thing about the wings was that the dark green paired with the dark purple-y wings clashed in areas without any outlines because the colour of a charizard is normally much lighter than the wing colour.

Not bad at all! I really quite like this concept. It’s creative and it looks good. I had to remove a point from relevance because you removed the tooth, and that’s tampering with outlines. It’s only a small amount though. Changing the stripes was a good idea, and adding “cracks” along it makes it look great. :] Very nice. Definitley a favourite. Some parts are a little light though which makes the dark outlines look very prominent. Perhaps even colouring them a dark green would have worked better.

Interestingly coloured, but the black with the white is quite a stark contrast. The outlines on that white part are too light and sort of don’t work with the intense black. The orange colours are very saturated, as are the blue shades, which are not chosen very wisely. All the blues look like different blues rather than shades of the same blue, which does not at all work. The colour choices were good in theory, but they needed to be completely different hues for it to all work smoothly together.

This is very basic and rather plain, as well as not at all creative. Some of the shades look too light and in all honesty it looks like a lighter, much less saturated version of a regular lucario.

I love this one a lot. The only issue, and this is the only thing, is that the scenery here looks very flat upon this venusaur. If you single out the leaf overhanging its face, you’ll notice that the tree is not at all in line with the leaf’s centre, which I think takes away from the pattern a tiny bit. Same with the leg on the right, which has a tree on it that continues onto the back leg. If you were to look at that venusaur from the side, it would look like the tree was on its side and it wouldn’t have a top. xD Unless it all matches up somehow with other tree parts, but I can’t be certain. Otherwise it’s absolutely beautiful and you may very well have won. But wonderful job nonetheless.

I know I said I usually love rainbow, but this raikou only has rainbow markings. Which, I admit, is pretty awesome, but the rest of it is solidly coloured pretty much. That, to me, is like a basic recolour, which wouldn’t score very highly. Again, some of the outlines are much too light, but overall it’s a nice colour combination. I think it might have looked better if it was smaller as well, given that the colours wouldn’t have looked so spaced apart.

Okay, I love this. A lot. XD The only issue I had was that the tops of the ears, in my opinion, perhaps should have been white like the rest of the sprite, because all that red with yellow patterning makes it a little busy up the top with overlaying parts of the sprite. Other than that though, really good.

Hahaha, disallowing scratching on a fusion? Am I MAD? xD I expect people to scratch; a fusion without scratching sounds like a frightening concept. Lol.

In all seriousness though, yes, it's allowed and encouraged. The only point I meant to make was that in order to be able to use Gen VI pokemon, you'd need to scratch it. x) I'll add confirmation to the first page!

The only restrictions you have are the basic "no gen VI unless you own the sprite" and "no posting old sprites that you didn't make for this contest specifically." xD You're not restricted by anything else. Choose any pokemon, colour it in any way you like, etc. It's entirely up to you. x)

Sorry for the last minute entry. I've been quite busy this week, but still wanted to enter so I thought I should create something now before I run out of time. Here's my entry. I liked the concept of Krookadile, so I wanted to combine it with two more pokemon which I liked the concept of. Torterra and Hippowdon. There isn't really much of a big meaning of why I chose these pokemon, it is just that I liked each pokemon separately, so I thought, what would happen if I fused them? I got this.

Pokemon in fusion: Krookodile (Base), Torterra (Colour, Tree, Rocks), Hippowdon (Sawdust dispenser thingy)
Description: Terradyle, the Sawdust Pokemon. Terradyle has adapted to it's habitat and has grown foliage for camouflage. It has also grown fleshy growths that seem to resemble rocks. The outside of it's body is said to be as hard as wood and is very susceptible to fire. It seems to dispense sawdust from it's legs through two holes. It only dispenses this sawdust to attract a mate and also as a way to confuse it's foe by kicking the sawdust into the foe's face. It is usually found in forests and meadows.

This fusion is very basic and it looks like you spent a minimal amount of time on it. The way you shaped the part of the mane fur which was clearly the edge of your copy/paste is quite lazy and doesn’t look good, and as for the concept, well it’s pretty basic and it’s not at all a new idea. If you can fused in other places and done more of a crossover than just a head placed on a body, then you would have gotten more points.

I like the concept, and the way you created the fusion is done really well! The face is a little awkward however, mostly just in the placement of the coral “arms” and the line that’s separating the red with the yellow. I’m not sure if it was meant to be curved or straight, as it’s straight toward the back of the head but then gets lumpy, and then right at the front there’s a stray pixel that makes the line dip, which didn’t really make sense. The white ring on the back of the head is also poking out a little too far when, at that angle, I think it would be mostly or nearly completely masked by the head, and therefore you could have just had some of that yellow coral poking out. Overall a good effort and great combination of pokemon. :]

Your idea is good, but the execution could have been better. At first I thought you’d simply replaced the head, but upon closer inspection, I discovered that you actually used the krokorok as a base and added sceptile parts. The arms should have been higher up, like where the krokorok’s were, and the way you’ve tried to use the red for where the stripes used to be doesn’t work out so well. It’s quite awkwardly shaped. I think the sceptile legs look slightly out of place on the body as well, because they’re slim and they don’t look like they can support a heavy body like that. xD Good concept though.

Heh, this made me smile when I saw it. However, I have a few things to point out and the first one is the wing coming across the body. As a first critique, it covers a lot of the body which is disappointing because I would have liked to see what more you did to it. Mainly though, it seems that you’ve inverted a wing that normally faced upwards and was the inside of the wing, yes? The main thing that gives it away (despite the fact that there are no sprites that are in that pose) is the bone along the outside, which you can only normally see on the inside of the wing. On a fearow, anyway. So it makes it seem like something weird has happened and the wing was turned inside out or something. The outlines of the yellow crest on the head are too light in some places and although I realise this is the original shading/placement of pixels, the difference between the red and the yellow makes it not look right when replaced with yellow. Overall, I really do like it though. x)

I really like what you’ve done with this. It’s creative and it looks great. 8D I think the servine collar is a little too straight and sort of stretches away without much curvature. The yellow band on the leg isn’t really outlined properly so it blends a little with the other colour, and I reckon the claw outlines are a little too light, but apart from that it’s quite good. C: There’s something about the shading but I can’t put my finger on what it is. I think the dark parts stand out quite well but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing so I won’t mention any more about it. xD Well done.

This is a very cool idea, and I think you’ve tried it out quite well. I’m confused about the shading though, since it seems to be coming from behind and from in front based on the outlines, so you lot a mark for look & effort for that, but otherwise it’s quite cool. I wasn’t sure whether or not to accept the horns, considering it is technically not part of any of those pokémon. Anyhow, it was nicely done but the shading confused me a little, and I think you could have done a bit more with it. x)

Very cool concept. O: The sawdust idea is a pretty cool one, especially since it is normally, obviously, sand. Your shading is a little confusing in places, such as on the face rock. At first I couldn’t quite understand what was going on with your chest shading, only to realise that it was a rock on the snout. xD They look more like spikes; I think if you wanted them to be more rock-like, you could have gone for a more grey look rather than making them white. The way you reshaded the nose is a little off considering the light source is to the left, and I think in generally it might be a little over-shaded. I also would have liked to see some more hippowdon. However, I still like it, so nice job. B)

I think this sprite is very lacking. From the flower and up, the whole thing is unchanged and entirely meganium. Generally with a fusion you wanna go with a mix basically everywhere, or nearly everywhere. I would have liked to have seen a lot more tropius and armaldo used in places other than just below the flower. The tail is also strangely placed; I think moving it a little upwards and to the left would have helped. Also lol at you not knowing what a meganium was. XD

...This thing is feckin’ adorable. I love the way you’ve done the stripes on its back. They’re very smooth and it works really well! The way the wings bend around does look weird, and that diagonal line is bothering me a little, but that’s pretty much my only critique. Everything else is pretty much seamless, including the way you shade and the way you outline. Very well done!

Great job to all and thanks for taking part! Now for the third week's challenge, which you may begin immediately if you wish...

GOOD LUCK YET AGAIN! Make me proud! ;o;

Version 3: Neatened it up a bit:

Version 4: Deleted, the whole fire shooting out fo the ears idea did not pan out and looked very silly!

Version 5: Added proper flame to the flame pipes, recoloured the shell:
http://i58.tinypic.com/wsry37.png

Being new to this whole Spriting thing, I had to search up what "Scratching" is. Finally worked out it means drawing it from scratch (Right?). I was a bit worried at having to do that, but I am very happy with the outcome. It is not as neat as some of the amazing work I am seeing in this comp though...Wow some amazing sprites so far. Please keep it up! I am loving the artwork.

You really are full of questions, arentcha? x) Haha. Well hm, that's a very good question. I'm going to say yes, mainly because the example you used includes a bird pokemon which, by default, would be part flying. I suppose as long as you make quite obvious changes then it would be alright, yes. :]

Might I just say, Brettles, that you have been very prompt in each of the contests I hold, with all of your entries. xD I'm impressed by your dedication and speed! Also, sorry about using the term scratching without specifying exactly what it is. XD I actually remember that when I was new to spriting, I had seen people use that term and had no idea what it meant either. xD It was solved by google of course, but it's funny that you had the same issue as I did.

Very smooth and rather flawless. The changes you made were both subtle and obvious, and contributed very well to your retype choice. Sort of looks a little too girly, although that’s commonly the theme with fairy types, which is a little bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, an excellent sprite as always. I think you could have done more with this, but what you have is really cool. I love the idea of a phantom tauros. Very fair point about Corey. XD I love what you did here. It looks like really natural edits, and almost like it could be a meowth mega-evolution into a party fairy type. xD There’s just something off about the face, though. I know the Black and White sprite is like that by default, but there’s something off with the eyes; they aren’t shaped properly and the head isn’t oval enough. For me it’s those small details that let down the sprite, even though you did something pretty cool with it.

No, that's not what I meant. x) You just can't change the outline's position or extend it or anything. You can recolour it, just not add or subtract from it. x)

Teacher! I have a question! Can I recolor my sprite to match, say, something from another game, or would that knock out some of my creativity points?

No, that's fine. x) You can make it another pokemon, even, so creativity is less to do with what you make it into than it is to do with how you use your outlines, if that makes sense. Just do what you like. 8D

That smile does make me laugh. xD The saturated hues of the body makes it look like a sucked-on lollipop a little. xD The idea is pretty similar to the original sprite, however, so I don’t think it was that creative. The outlines are far too light, to the point of near-invisibility, as well. Overall I would have liked to see something much different from the original. The biggest downfall...you changed the outlines. Yeah, it’s only tiny, but not only did you eliminate lines from the contour, but you added a pixel in one spot as well. Doesn’t matter if it’s a single pixel because the challenge was not to alter the outlines, and you did. Because it wasn’t drastic, you didn’t lose all 5 points for that.

Not the first to submit this time! xD Oh well. I still really like this sprite. The description makes it seem pretty cool and the face is hilarious, but the shading is fairly sub-par, unfortunately. I do like what you did with it. I nearly got you for a two-pixel wide gap between the legs of the original vulpix sprite, but because the gap isn’t open, then I won’t count that as the outline. I should have specified that in the rules but I didn’t think to. xD Well done.

The shading style really matches the bone texture. It makes it look really smooth. c: However, there are parts around the eye that clash with the black, and the edges of the socket are a bit jagged. Other than that, awesome job.

I feel like I should give you extra points for winning all these weeks so far. xD But I can’t. Ahem.

Contestants...
There have been some amazing entries so far, but all these challenges boil down to the final test. Welcome to WAR I: Week Five.

YOU MUST.

If you have any further questions, do not hesitate to ask! This is the form you will be using:

The best prize of all when it comes to contests like these is making the most out of everything you're given. And if the competition were based on that, Sarah, you'd have me beat. You and Brettles, because you both seem to be getting a lot out of this and making the most of the short bursts of criticism you both receive. :D

Description of your scratch sprite: Now, I hate doing scratch sprites, especially when I'm limited to 4 total shades of a single color. But I did it. It is based heavily off of the Slime from Maplestory (http://pandodaily.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/king_slime_solo.png?w=300&h=212). However, I also drew inspiration from all of the slimes in the world of Action/Adventure RPG games. So it is green, it is creepy, and it is precisely 4 shades. Black, White, Dark Green, and... Green. I also tried my damnedest to make it look like something out of RBGY. It's not easy.

Description of your scratch sprite: Roachibiri: The cockroach pokemon. Type: Bug/Flying. About 1 foot tall, 2 feet long, and about 1 foot wide. Weighs about 30 pounds. Roachibiri are extremely hard to beat because for some reason, they won't go down. Put them in a vacuum (no, not the cleaning kind), "I'm still alive sucker!" Set them on fire, "You think that can get rid of me?!" Put them in radiation, "Hahaha. Nope." Trainers view Roachibiris as pests when they have to battle against them.

The instructions were kinda confusing, but I figured that it was too late to ask. I was confused about the whole colors thing, so I just decided to go with four colors total. The colors I used are below the sprite. Although I'm not that good at scratching, I decided to enter anyway. Hope you like it! :3

Used the cluster method again, this time not using many, if any, defined lines. Something was said that clearly made this shiny Garbodor uncomfortable....

I can really appreciate your tribute to Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire. I like that you chose to do a ruby golem, even if it’s not the traditional pokémon “Golem.” Lol. Anyway, the style of shading is cell, I believe, which doesn’t translate well when dealing with light sources. I understand you may have been going for a ‘reflective gemstone’ sort of look, but it doesn’t really look like it. If you hadn’t explained that that’s what your sprite was, I wouldn’t have known. Everything is very uneven and unrefined, so I would encourage you to spend more time ensuring that lines are appropriately shaped (such as roundness for the head), and also that the shades of red aren’t too close together. The darkest lines would do better if they were darker, because there isn’t enough of a distinction based on the richness of the red you’ve gone for. All in all though, cool idea. :]

Ooh, just within the 96x96 pixel restriction! I always enjoy seeing the processes you go through; it helps me mark you higher for effort, and your end result is always an improvement from your previous attempts. I like that you took the time to do the scales. I think the black stripes were a good idea, as it fills that empty space and gives a more elaborate feel. I think the oversized head takes away from the sprite, as it deducts from a level of realism and comprehension. That might be a strange thing to say, but for me I don’t like the giant head. The light source is also questionable, but overall you didn’t do too badly. :] AWESOME CAKE BY THE WAY!

I do enjoy slimes, but this one is pretty jagged. There are many places where you could have made the lines much smoother and rounded, which only requires a little bit of tweaking but makes a huge difference. The shading isn’t bad, but it could be better. Contrary to your statement, I don’t find this thing the slightest bit creepy; in fact, it’s quite cute. xD Nice job, but keep in mind to stick to smooth lines and shapes. x)

Minun...I really liked this sprite. It was one of my favourites of this whole round, but you had more than four colours. D: You had six, or seven including the white background. You probably used some colours and then scrapped them, but the different shades are still there and weren’t replaced by the new colours you used. If you open it up in a program that can check a colour palette, you’ll see that you have six browns, and one white. If you’d had four browns and one white which was ONLY used for the background, I would have accepted it as four, but there are six total, excluding the white. =/ Which is a real shame. Well, you did well anyhow, even if you didn’t place. :] I liked the way you shaded, I liked the compactness of the small sprite, and I like how you utilised “four” colours. You DID think you were working with four, and the only reason it’s not four is because you forgot to recolour some shades, unfortunately. Great job on the sprite. :]

At first I thought you’d run out of room for the rest of the sprite before I realised that, no, the mugshot was intentional. xD It’s cool though. I like the style in which you did this. It’s smart to choose shades that are close together, but not too close, so that you can allow for more detail and less of a conventional, standard sprite. It give a certain softness that isn’t present with stark whites and blacks, but at the same time, I find myself not so fond of lineless sprites. It was smart to go with one though. I can’t deny that you’ve got mad skillz though!

This is quite adorable! I feel like you could have utilised the black or white better somehow, although in saying that, it’s hard to sacrifice either of those. xD So maybe don’t listen to me, ‘cause using four shades is hard. All in all I think it’s adorable and you did well. And because I’m hard-pressed to choose between you two, you’re gonna come in at a tie, which means there’s technically no second place...which I reckon is dumb, but that’s the way the rules work, so well done. xD
