Dance because we have some dragons!
It is Pokemon Podcast Month and we got some exclusive content from your favorite Pokemon podcasters! From GO, TCG, talk, to tabletop and beyond! We have sent out the classic Podcasters Questionnaire to see what your favorite Pokemon podcasters have to say about podcasting!
And today we have….Madeline and Santiago from Dragon Dance to talk about podcasting and everything in between!
So what does the Dragon Dance have to say about…
What type of podcast do you have? Why do you make the type of podcast that you make?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Madeline and Santiago: We have a podcast about the gaming series of Pokemon. We touch on mainly main series Pokemon games and Pokemon GO. We also cover news on upcoming events and tournaments in the non-virtual world (live events). We make two types of episodes: fusion and freeform. The fusion episodes cover each dual typing that exists in the games currently- these are more structured and informative episodes- they are great to listen to if you’re interested in competitive Pokemon or strategy.
The freeform episodes are exactly that, they can be rankings, interviews, a discussion about in-game events, background lore- anything! My favorite freeform episodes are when we rank the hottest gym trainers, dog type Pokemon, or typings.

What drew you to the Pokemon franchise?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Santiago: I’m a classic 90’s kid who grew up on the game. It’s always been a part of my life and I just love how in-depth and layered the world of Pokemon has become. Onions have layers, ogres have layers, Pokemon has layers.
Madeline: So I actually wasn’t allowed to play video games as a child. We didn’t even have a TV in my house for most of my childhood. Santiago bought me a 3DS at a flea market for my birthday and we played Gen 7- Sun and Moon together. That was a great gen to be introduced on and it got me hooked. We also played a lot of Pokemon Go during college and met all of our friends through the PoGo club at our school.

What inspired you to podcast?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Madeline: Santiago started it! I wasn’t even involved at first- I’m not great with technology and wouldn’t know how to get into it. He started as a Twitch streamer but quickly realized that podcasting was more his speed.
He also had the awesome idea of doing fusion episodes that cover dual type combinations in the Pokemon universe (multiverse? because of wormholes?) He wanted me to come on one time for an interview and we realized we work well together on creative projects.
We’ve been married for 4 years, and we don’t have too many hobbies together except for Pokemon. I had a really good time recording with him and I wanted to come into it fully, but I also didn’t want to railroad his creative pursuits, so I didn’t ask to be a co-host. Luckily, he had the exact same experience and asked me to come on fully.

What keeps you going when it comes to podcasting and Pokemon?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Madeline: Pokemon is a leisure activity for us both- so its definitely something we turn to for fun and recreation.
What keeps us going on the podcast? Anyone who listens or follows along! We love getting feedback and comments from listeners. At first, we were shocked that people actually listened, and from not just the United States either. Our top listeners are from Canada, the US, Germany, and France! Its wild, though we’re still not convinced that it isn’t just our friends and family using VPNs lol.

What kind of feeling do you wish your listeners to have when listening to your podcast?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Santiago: That’s a great question and an easy answer: Joy!
I want people to listen and feel like they’re having a conversation with their friends. Pokemon is a gaming community and I want listeners to be able to unwind after a day or drive home while listening to the podcast to chill out for a bit.

What is the hardest part when it comes to podcasting?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Madeline: Consistency! We are so bad at having a schedule because life gets in the way!
This summer alone we’ve traveled internationally, applied to grad schools, worked, and have classes as well. It is such a nice escape when we finally do get to sit down and laugh and learn about Pokemon. It is hard to carve out the space to record and edit an episode, but we love putting our stuff out there and meeting new trainers through our Instagram, @TheDragonDancers.

What is the hardest part when it comes to podcasting?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Santiago: Being able to grow and evolve (pun intended) alongside the franchise is the best part of Pokemon for me. I was born one year before Pokemon existed, which was the saddest year of my life! I was so sad without Pokemon, I didn’t even speak for that entire year. Experts say that is normal for an infant, but I say it was because I was lacking such a great game series in my life.
Jokes aside, having Pokemon be a consistent part of my life through all of my developmental years is such a gift. I was playing on my Nintendo DS in the backseat of long car rides, I played Pokemon GO throughout my college years and still, and of course I have a Nintendo Switch now to play the more recent generations. I’ve made some of my best friendships through Pokemon and made some unforgettable memories.
My favorite part about podcasting is when Madeline gets so tickled by her own jokes that we need to pause or edit out a laugh attack. She’s not great at holding her composure sometimes, and her jokes can be pretty funny.
Madeline: Going to Charlotte, NC for Pokemon Regionals this year! We got to connect with previous podcast guests and creators we listen to, we watched a friend compete in the PoGo GBL tourney, and of course we got to buy some cute Pokemon merch.”

If you can suggest an episode of your podcast to a new listener, which episode would it be? Why?

https://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Dragon-Dance-podcast.jpg?x41655Madeline and Santiago:A good episode to introduce anyone to is the Ghost/Water episode (https://open.spotify.com/episode/0tbMKVPZtjaQx7TAZHrB1l?si=0085d3e7e6f5473b)!

This is a fusion episode where we discuss everything there is to know about the Ghost/Water dual typing in Pokemon! Fusion episodes are a great way to gain some integral Pokemon knowledge but also still get some great Santi-Madeline shenanigans!

These were some amazing responses from our favorite Dragon Dancers! You can really see how great they work together and the fun they have making this podcast.
Thank you for Madeline and Santiago from Dragon Dance for answering our questions. We hope that you give Dragon Dance a listen if you haven’t already. If you are a listener then let us know!
Signing off! Until next time!
