Chapter Four sneak-peeks, progress, and discussion

This thread is purely for Chapter Four related discussion- mostly predictions since it'll be another three months before the chapter officially starts (maybe less if the challenge goes well!). I'll be posting some progress updates and the occasional sneak-peak here. No worries- all updates/previews will be spoiler free. All the sneak-peaks will consist of random panels (or WIP panels) of pages that I feel like sharing- I won't ever post anything that gives direct spoilers.

Here's the first official sneak-peak. I was debating whether I should post this or not, but eh- I'll just do it. It's a preview of the Chapter Four cover- already uploaded onto Smackjeeves (since I'm an author, it'll show as the 'latest' page for me- and Snowy.)

Though it isn't a spoiler, I'll still put it in spoiler tags for those who don't want to see anything related to Chapter 4 until it starts.

Anyway, on that note- let's start some discussion. What do you guys think will happen in Chapter Four?

I'm holding off on posting thoughts for Chapter 4 until Chapter 3 is wrapped up but it looks to be going in interesting directions!

We all know the twins are going to blow SOMETHING up.


The chapter isn't finished, but I have a feeling Nyra will play a major role... But I also sense that "barrier" she spoke about is going to fail, just from that falling fiery feather we saw in that one panel. Much as a rose loses a petal, a bird losing a feather is often a sign great illness or loss. Not always, but it often has a foreboding feel.

The twins are guaranteed to blow something up. That's just a fact. It'd be no fun without explosions. =D

And you'll have to see regarding the barrier. Always nice to see what people think will happen in the coming scenes! I haven't responded to all threads so far- but you've got quite a few thought at theories! It's always fun reading them. =P

And yes. All my cover pages have fire in them so far. This was not intentional.... but considering this story arc involves Moltres, I guess it was bound to happen. xD

Anyway- I'll try to get a weekly sneak of sorts- no spoilers.

I love the focus on fire. Fire types are my favourites. c: I really love your backgrounds too. You put a lot of effort into every stroke, which is very admirable.

I'm keen to find out what they discover in the temple! The fact that Naya is going along with them - somewhat against her will - is probably the thing which makes it the most amusing for me. xD I can't wait to see what she finds. And I'm really curious about Nyra. O: I wonder if those kabutops will find her... and what they were doing there. It's a shame her father was how he was, but hopefully she can bring some honour back to her family. x) That might be nice. xD

And oh god. How did I not notice that earlier. D8 -scrambles to fix- I would make silly puns like that completely unintentionally. And you're always more than welcome to point out spelling/grammar issues. Photoshop lacks a spell-check, so I often don't catch all the typos before posting a page. xD

I love fire types- they've been my favorite since forever. Can you tell? xD The entire comic won't focus on fire types, but for now, we'll see plenty of them! And my backgrounds? What is this insanity of which you speak. I rarely slow down to work on backgrounds on pages. I abuse gradients a lot... though, I guess I did put some background effort at the end of chapter three. O_o Wonder what possessed me to do that. -shot-

Poor Naya got herself into this. Maybe eventually I'll actually give her choices.... PFFFT. Yeah. I can't say too much about Chapter Four at this point (spoilerssss), but I can say there will be Kabutops, Naya, and Nyra! 8D -shot-

The reason cover pages don't take long is because I don't use any lineart in them- they're usually a bit more abstract. I'm faster at painterly stuff than I am at lining, though I HAVE gotten faster with lines in more recent pages, but that's mostly due to the increased line width I've been using for the last several pages.

Puns are always awesome. I don't care what people say, I love bad puns. =D I typo everywhere. Being a fast typer means that I make more typos... but it also means I get more done. TYPO MONSTERS ARE EVERYWHERE.

Fire types are awesome. Oh- THOSE pages. xD Those were fun to do.... you know, now that I think about it, I haven't been THAT lazy with backgrounds in Chapter Three. I wonder how many panels I actually made backgrounds for vs. gradients. I should count.

With NaNo starting this weekend, production on Ch. 4 will slow down quite a bit unless the hiatus is cut by more than one or two weeks (in which case I'll have no choice but to update!)- so sneak-peeks will be scarce. I'll see if I can get a page done tonight or tomorrow night though. I don't think I'll be able to post anything significant from that page though without potential spoilers.

Unfortunately, not much progress has been made on chapter four in the last two or three weeks. Life dumped a group project on me and well... yeaaaahhh.... Everything went downhill.

That coupled with NaNoWriMo, I just haven't had free time. Or sleep time. My mind has been focused more on my other story than on PRS lately- but no worries! I'm still working on it a little in the background. Mostly on the brainstorming and mental sticky-notes for long-term plot stuff. I hope to outline the rest of chapter four by the end of the month- I've been putting that off for too long!

Anyway, with the hiatus starting this week, I'll be setting up the contest this weekend- it should be up by Friday or Saturday evening. I've got a theme in mind and all- just need to put together some background info on some stuff for people that might help with the contest. I'll probably feature the contest entries on the SJ site (they'll be removed before Ch. 4 starts to minimize clutter) and possibly let people vote on the winner!

The hiatus challenge still has about 36 hours remaining- so if we're going to shorten the hiatus, post! Right now we're still looking at January 2nd. Part of me is kind of glad we didn't hit a few hundred posts- I'm not sure I can get a decent enough buffer done before January let alone in two weeks. xD

And yes, I know I've been neglecting the tumblr ask page. It's been busy- it'll get more love during the hiatus... to make up for time.

I don't think we're gonna hit 100 posts to be honest, but it was fun to try. xD It's a shame the comics section of PXR isn't more heavily populated. Or PXR in general. Lel. But anyway, I think most people will be busy leading up to January anyway, so I doubt anyone's gonna be ferociously hounding you for more pages anytime soon. ^^

I'm excited for the contest! :D I'll certainly be looking to enter. ^^

EDIT: I just checked and there are only thirteen posts to go before hitting 100, so MAYBE we can achieve that... xD I should post thirteen new threads. lel.

I'm eternally grateful that the people that actively follow the comic are wonderfully patient and understanding when it comes to updates. I always try to maintain steady/regular update schedules BECAUSE the people are so awesome (otherwise I'd say "Deal with it"). An yes, NaNo is always a challenge- but a fun one for me!

Right now I'm pretty far behind, but I'll be catching up this weekend. School started to eat my soul for the last week and a half, but the worst of it is about to end, so it's all good! Right now I'm at 8,200 when I should be at 20,000. I've been further behind in the past though- last year I fell WAY behind and still managed to catch up and win!

I don't think we will either, but it WAS fun to try! I'll always have incentives for being active on the forums. Don't know what yet, but I'll make up new ones after the hiatus ends. Maybe bonus pages for every xxx pages. I do like to encourage activity here, on the SJ site, and the Ask-blog. It's always so wonderful to see all the feedback and such from people. =D It's what keeps me motivated!

And I'm looking forward to seeing the entries! I think the theme I've picked is something that people can have a little fun with- I just need to get it together. I should have time this weekend, thankfully.

Terrible fans. That's what. xD Thankfully I haven't had any of those- but I've seen some impatient people at other comics before. Really makes me upset when I see people whining over slow updates. They forget most comic authors have lives and that these comics certainly don't make themselves. If that were the case... I'd be done with this by now. xD

School was a bigger set back than I anticipated. I had a project that was SUPPOSED to be due on the 7th. A group project. It was pushed back to the 10th- THEN again to the 12th. And on the the 10th my group decided "LET'S START OVER" with two days left (it was a 5 week project) and I went sleep deprived as a result. So tired right now. xD

And NaNo isn't a competition with others- but against yourself. The goal is to write 50,000 words by the end of the month (1667 words a day). To 'win' you simply have to hit the 50k mark. So if I write about 2,200 words a day for the rest of the month, I should catch up and manage to win. xD

Also, there's a rule against proof reading during NaNo. You do that in December. Preferably after the TGIO party (Thank God It's Over Party).

No. I'm not counting my own replies.

... Just kidding. I'm not THAT cruel. Well... maybe. Just a few more to go- part of me wants to scrape at least ONE week from the total. Not sure why, maybe cause I secretly feel bad that I have to go on hiatus for so long. I'll be regretting that in the weeks to come, I'm sure. xD I don't actively advertise my comic on the internet- but I do spam links related to the comic on pages relating to the comic- like how I've been spamming the forum and tumblr links on the SJ/DA sites lately. xD

And I don't intend for the contest stuff to eat into the NaNo time. I just need to do a few rough sketches for some characters that haven't yet appeared that will appear- I figure it's stuff that may help with the theme. I won't do anything I consider too much of a spoiler though. xD

I've been slacking off on replies everywhere. I need to fix that. Part of it was being out of town, but now I have excuse.

Alrighty~! Well, Chapter Four has officially started. SO FEEL FREE TO DISCUSS ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING.

Fun Fact: Exeggcute are seeds. Not eggs.
Another Fact: There should be six Exeggcute. Where are the other three?
ANOTHER Fact: "Its six eggs converse using telepathy. They can quickly gather if they become sparated."
And another: ^ The above dex entry calls them eggs. But most call them seeds.

And for the record, I can and will use stuff from Pokedex entries. Like telepathy... and volcano causing roars. I won't use some of the more absurd entries though. xD

There are. That poor exeggcute... which brings up the question... Do Exeggcute have blood, yolk, or neither? xD

Those questions are always interesting for Pokemon based on non-animal things XD I'd say it's up to creative license since Game Freak would never answer questions about Pokemon bleeding XD

What if they have yellow blood? ;D

Ch. 4 progress went very well during tonight's stream. I only finished one page- but I sketched out the next NINE pages after that. I've had this part planned for a while, so I know what I'm doing. Just... drawing it is gonna be hard. xD I got started on some more script- so PROGRESS!

Been some steady progress over the last few days. Motivation is still very low, but I'm finding bits at a time to be a bit easier to manage than my usual "DO THE PAGE IN ONE SITTING!" method. ^_^'

Here's a preview / WIP shot of page... 14 I think? The page is shaded- just needs backgrounds. I might be going a little overboard with the lighting now. I started it so simple in the pages with Talon's group... not sure what happened, but I'm now using an extra 9 layers for shading total (I've got 3 color layers- so +3 clipping masks on each for a total of 6 layers per color layer.)

They kinda look like this now.

- Shading 1 (light shading)
- Light 1 (Soft light)
- Light 2 (Hard light)
- Shading 2 (dark shading)
- Markings / Misc.

Whoops. I use too many layers sometimes. I sometimes add extra layers for other things (Bern's tail flame takes 5 layers by itself, not counting the light).

Well whatever you're doing with the lighting it looks beautiful! :D Ohey, that's only one more layer than I use XD
-Backlight (color dodge, varying/low opacity)
-Highlight (color dodge, 50% opacity)
-Bright highlight (linear dodge (add), 50%; only for highlights on bright colors, because the highlight layer doesn't work for them)
-Shading (multiply, 70%)

I'm really loving where this is going so I'd hate for you to drop it completely, so work on it at your own pace C:

Not too terribly different than mine. xD I use multiply for most shadow layers (opacity depends on area- 30% for normal/basic lighting, 50% and 70% for inside the temple)- but the light layers are just normal with low opacity. I messed with varying modes, but found I liked normal best. xD

And no worries, I'm just really stressed and not thinking clearly at this time. I just need to calm down and relax a bit. It happens from time to time, PRS just got the worst of my irrational thinking. I'll be on medicines for the insanity/depression before long, I suppose. This might just be a result of the health nonsense I've been dealing with (depression/violent mood swings ARE symptoms). ^_^

And an unrelated note, I've been working on a page for Nightfall recently. Well- not the official comic- more of a bonus comic to test the style and such for when I really get started. It's slow going, but I'm really excited to get officially started later this year. Still lots of planning to do.... I have way too many projects going on at once.

So. Chapter Four is turning out to be longer than expected... no thanks to my brain's inability to stick to the script.... script that it wrote two days ago at that. Dammit brain... why make me write it when you don't even use it? xD Scenes keep sneaking themselves in... All I have to say about it: Poor, poor, Naya.

I know the feels! I purposely wrote my script very basic (1 sentence summary of each chapter) so I could allow myself to change things up easily but I still find myself changing major events up nonetheless OTL

Well, for me- the outline is lack that- a description of the chapter. The scripts are more like a play-script detailing out each scene.... except SOME CHARACTERS won't follow them. I swear- it's either the twins or Echo. Poor Naya suffers as a result of it somehow.

Haha. xD I sometimes go without scripts, but I find it helps to have them- at least keeps me on track... except for when it doesn't. Obviously.
