No sign-up form or anything? So I can just pop in here and post, right? :D I'm in! I have a few anime on my to-watch list right now: Psycho Pass, K-Project, Attack on Titans, One Piece, and Ah! My Goddess.. going to have a busy, busy summer.

Nope. You post here, you get in. Pretty easy, right? :3
Ya that sounds like a busy schedule of anime. I still haven'g finished Haganai NEXT yet. I think I've been reading more manga than anime myself, though, since the last anime I finished was Chiuunibyou (8th grade syndrome). I liked that one. :3
Maybe I should do some features of characters and stuff every now and then. I used to do that. lol
I'm signing up. Because I can.
I also like anime.

Ya I tend to read manga more than watch anime myself as well, but I don't think that's much of an issue here.
I'm a huge Madoka fan, I can't wait for the third movie to come out. :D
I read some of Vampire Knights. Didn't really catch my eye though. I might check it out later on with a better prompt or something. I didn't pick up Soul Eater, for instance, for a long time as well. That turned out to be a good series to read.

I only read the manga for Madoka; my parents have a thing against youtube.
I asked about Vampire Knight because the manga finally ended and the ending is...I feel the need to seek out someone who knows about it as well to rant. XD The final arc in itself wasn't bad, but the final chapter... I've yet to get into Soul Eater--I've been drawing a lot recently, and it's taking up all my time.

The madoka manga is trash compared to the original anime (as with all adaption decays), unfortunately. I've yet to finish Oriko or Kasumi either, though I've already known the ending for each. There's also A Different Story light novel as well, but that never got translated.
Ah, ya that happens a lot, with endings and stuff. I've read a bunch of manga that had unsatisfactory endings as well.

Count me in!
Hokay. So I watched through a lot of Yu Yu Hakusho recently. There is a scene at the end of Yusuke and Kuabara's first battle with Toguro with Heie that is just so awesome. Remember Tarukane has kidnapped Heie's sister Yukina and he's torturing her emotionally to produce tears because her tears turn into really expensive jewels. Heie busts in and slices three guards, and starts explaining that Tarukane can't run from death forever. Tarukane, who doesn't know that Heie is Yukina's sister, starts trying to buy Heie off with money. "That broad behind you makes jewels you wouldn't even believe. I can pull millions from her!" Ohhh, bad mistake. Heie just punches him in the face, he goes flying into this sorta bullet proof glass, his head hits it, and the glass cracks. Heie walks over and proceeds to give him the beating of his life. He punches him in the face over and over, while Botan calls to Heie not to kill him because he's forbidden to kill humans and if he does he'll be severly punished (nevermind the fact that he just sliced three guards, they're extras, but killing a main antagonist is what will get you in trouble). Heie's response? "They're just afraid of justice!" So he's about to deliver the fatal blow when Yukina stops him. My jaw dropped. Best line in all of Yu Yu Hakusho. o.o
You can find it on Youtube but I won't link to it here because of some of the language. But yah.
Not really cute but, sure, I have 8th grade syndrome too. xD

Well this is definately my scene, count me in!
My all time favorite anime is the Monogatari series. (Bakemono, Nisemomo, Nekomono, etc.)
I've read spoilers about the other LN's, except for the final 2 that are to be released this year (pt1 - sept 9 and final volume sometime in summer), and i'm pretty much all 'giddy' about what will happen, the story in it's entirety intrigued me like no other anime has, and this is the first time i've been so absorbed into an anime/manga/LN storyline so much.
As for anime in general, i'm a comedy/romance guy myself, current;y ALSO watching highschool DxD and Brothers Complex on the side =)

Yu Yu? You know, I never actually watched that. DX
WHAT IS THIS BLASPHEMY?! D<
YOU WILL DEVOTE A WEEK OF YOUR EXISTENCE RESOLVING THIS ISSUE PROPERLY!
... No, but seriously, anime is a thing. I like it. Count me in, and consider your club more awesome.
A few animes that make up my top 5 of late:
YU YU HAKUSHO (grrrrr... D<)
Orphen (Dunno why no one's ever heard of this. .___.;)
Soul Eater (It's on Netflix, by the way.)
Highschool of the Dead (IF YOU CAN BELIEVE THAT I WATCH IT FOR THE ZOMBIES!)
Fullmetal Alchemist (either series is good to me)
I wanted to add Sword Art Online, but I wasn't sure what I'd get rid of for it. But it is fantastic, and I'm excited for more when they get around to it.
But I've watched all those all the way through. I'm currently watching Fairy Tail as well. Dunno where I'll go after that.

*high-fives XaiakuX* You have good taste in anime. I haven't seen Orphen but I have heard of it. Someone I knew owned it actually and I wanted to watch it but never got to. :/ Since you bring it up though, I'll watch it.
I have a question about Sword Art Online. How much action is there in it? The reason I ask is because I was a huuuuuuge fan of the .Hack// series years ago, and Sword Art Online is similar in many ways, but it seems that SAO isn't nearly as dramatic or dark as .Hack//. These are all first impressions based on nothing but trailers but really, it just seems like a weak .Hack//.
Hm. I don't think I could actually compile a top five. I could only say that Ruroni Kenshin is probably my favorite? But then I also like Gundam Wing...
Homura
09-17-2013, 07:32 PM
I've heard of Orphen, I just never watched/read it. I dunno, Yu Yu never captured me as a series that I must go watch, that's probably why. Then again, my favourites are of a different kind of tone:
1. Monster
2. Puella Magi Madoka Magica
3. Noein
4. Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae wo Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.
5. Fate/Zero
So far anyway. I'm definitely more of a manga reader myself though.
Kenshin and Gundam Wing are both still good. Wing and Turn A Gundam were the last gundam to be interesting. Seed and on got weak.
SAO I hear is like .hack with more action and less plot. The setting is certainly one thing that ties the two together, but it seems like they're simply different genres.
Sanctus
09-17-2013, 08:04 PM
I probably like drama the most. Even when it comes to action, it's primarily the drama of the battles that keeps me hooked. Kenshin, Soul Eater, and to a lesser extent, Yu Yu struck a great balance between action, drama, and comedy. Of course they have different types of humor too.
For that matter I actually read a little bit of Fruits Basket for the humor, but it was ultimately too girly for me and I had to put it down. xD
Homura
09-17-2013, 08:22 PM
Oh you'd probably like Monster then. it's Seinen drama at its finest. It even has a slow pacing to go with as well. My repetoire of manga is much larger than my anime repetoire though. Stuff like Team Medical Dragon and Dr. Frost are amazing, even though ironically my favourite manga is The World God Only Knows, which is shounen.

S.A.O is kind of its own thing. It has its own drama, and own story that makes it utterly different from .Hack. You'd need to actually watch it to understand. The battles though, tend to be fast paced, and physical. I do recommend it, though. There are very few anime that made me just SIT and WATCH without doing anything else until it was done.
Kenshin is mah dawg.
Gundam Wing I got into with Endless Waltz. So as far as I'm concerned only Mobile Suit Gundam Wing as well as Mobile Fighter G Gundam was good. I couldn't really deal with Seed or anything else. xD

This is why I joined this club. :3 Thanks for the recommendations.
I'm sure SAO has it's own story but the basic concept is still similar: getting trapped in a vidya gayme and put in a coma. But hey if Bleach can get away with its similarities to Yu Yu then whatever. I'll have to watch it to pass a final judgment on it though.

I tried to read it, but I could only manage to glance at a few pages. At least with Fruits Basket Shigure's dry humor was great enough to get me through three volumes.
You'll have to watch Cloud doing Omni-slash to Sephiroth at the end of Advent Children just to get your manliness back... but save that until you're completely done so you won't have to do it again later.

I did a huge post on escapist about what anime to recommend to people, as well as some controversial stuff I said, so I might as well post here as well:
There are some really good suggestiions, particularly the Monster, Madoka, Fate/Zero, and P4, Gurren Lagaan are very good. In fact, Monster is my favourite anime, Madoka being number 2.
SnK definitely is overrated in the sense that it has a lot of pacing issues and really hasn't yet dive into the core of the series so far, even though it's a year and a half into the series. I did not find myself to care for the squad much outside of MC and Mikasa either, so YMMV on it. In comparison to Fullmetal, it's not close in it that Fullmetal managed to make you care about a minor character like Hughes. I can see the appeal, since the anime is very...American in mentality, but the quality of the visuals and sound is very good.
Out of the stuff I haven't seen a recommendation for:
Kara no Kyoukai: it's a series of movies that are deep and relatively unnerving. The animation studio is fantastic and the quality is top notch. If you like Type Moon, this is an easy pick up. If you're into Fate/Zero, this is kind of like a predecessor to it, while still being in the same universe. As a side note: Fate Kaleid Ilya Prisma is in fact a magical girl anime despite being in the Type Moon universe, whereas everything else in the Type Moon universe falls under thriller or supernatural. DO NOT watch Fate/Stay Night and Tsukihime, as neither of those two anime were any good...which is sad since the source material is great.
Steins;Gate: Sci-fi drama, from the minds of Nitro+. This is one of their better offerings, where an unsuspecting scientist(?) discovers ways to Time Travel and uncovers a hidden plot. This is the best of the trio of semi-colon series from Nitro+, with Chaos;Head and Robotics;Notes also set in the same universe. I never watched Chaos;Head, but Robotics;Notes is pretty good with the exact same formula as S;G.
Noein: Speaking of science fiction, Noein is also pretty good. The visuals are quite outdated by now, but the storyline managed to grip me after a rather slow start. As always, there is a time traveling element to this series as well.
Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka (and KWZDK of the Dead): KlK is insanely stylish and over the top. KWZDK is insanely over the top with comedy and also thrives on the similar absurdities that is seen in KlK. For insance, there is a zombie man who is a magical girl in this series. Totally crazy shenanigans.
Yakitate Japan!: Bread-making anime. See notes on absurdities above.
Shiki: I saw some suggestions of horror (Another, Higurashi, Umineko), so check out Shiki. It's vampires done right. Truly frightful from beginning to end, but for different reasons by the end of the series.
Mawaru Penguindrum: The series lays it pretty heavy on you at the beginning to set the tone for this series, and it's crucial for it to be this case in the psychological genre. This series does thrive, at least early on, on absurdities, but really gets deep into the main characters abotu midway into the series. This is more of a drama with comedic elements in the earlier half of the series than a thriller like Monster, though.
Durarara: Someone recommended Baccano!. I'll put Durarara in here as well, since it's very similar, and made by the same studio.
I would like to join ;o
I saw some SAO discussions. To be perfectly honest it's A+ great (minus how fast it actually is) UNTIL the second game world. That place just....I don't even know why I continued to watch it. It was okay during that but ugh. First half >>>>> second half.
Mainly I'm rewatching series right now, like Inuyasha, Digimon (it's on hold right now tho), soon to be Negima, Sailor Moon, and others. But I'm watching Dance in the Vampire Bund right now (I watch x amount of Inuyasha then watch a new series so I don't get bored)

I watched Sword Art Online a few weeks ago. The story still seems very much inspired by .Hack// but it's original enough. Most of the action scenes were very good -- most of it was in the first season though. The romance aspects of it were pretty lame and kind of annoying -- probably because they're little teenagers.
I plan to watch Durarara next.

I have really been enjoying Kill la Kill. Back in December, I was marathoning that while they were on break. I decided to watch the show in chunks so that way the cliffhangers won't be so bad but now that the show is revving up and everybody on the Twitterz are talking about it on the same day as airing, I have been forced to watch it by the week now.
It is a good thing KLK is a damn great show.
EDIT: I guess I should say more then what I am loving. I use to watch One Piece weekly and trying to get back into that. Besides Kill la Kill and One Piece, I tend to watch things that I hear are good now instead of doing the weekly hot-thing of the season. Fujiko was good and well worth the buy. That was the last thing I saw before Kill la Kill.

KLK is definitely the most talked about anime this eason. It's for good reason with all tis over-the-topness, but I can't shake that feeling that it's been there already with Gurren-Lagaan, which Trigger also did.
Madoka movie is coming out in a month or so! Best animated movie of last year on BD! :D
TheoreticalSelkie
03-07-2014, 04:25 AM
I think KLK has a different plot structure than Gurren Lagann to be honest, though the animation kinda reminds me of it. But then as my friend puts it, Gurren Lagann was escalation to the extreme while Kill La Kill gives me that vibe of being twisty as hell (though not as twisty as you, Space Dandy). ALL THE PLOT TWISTS.
The cliffhangers are killing me right now. At least the new episode comes out tomorrow on CR even though I don't watch it there.
Homura
03-07-2014, 04:39 AM
I think that's a fair assessment. But then again, after watching Madoka nothing really surprises me anymore in the anime department. lol
So far it isn't super twisty in the first half of the anime. But they have ramped it up these few weeks in terms of making things go round and round, so to speak.
Space Dandy is just...weird stuff going on there. I wonder what is with weird stuff and the space theme. They seem to always come together.

I'm in the process of watching Madoka and all I'm thinking is "this is definitely Urobutcher's writing". I'll have to thank Psycho-Pass and Fate / Zero for that. I've put it on hold for now because watching that right after seeing the ending to Psycho-Pass is a major downer.
Space Dandy... yeah it actually reminds me of how episodic Bebop was except it's a lot more comedic. Both animes definitely had their trippy moments (SD ep. 9 and Bebop's Mushroom Samba/Pierrot Le Fou) so I won't put it past Shinchiro to have something crazy happen in the season. There's going to be backstory in the new episode and I can hardly wait! CAT FAMILIES AHHH
Also speaking of anime, I just started watching Ace of Diamond annnnd I have more favorite characters and shippings. It's killing me! DX

What's interesting is that Madoka came before both of those series. Fate/Zero doesn't really count, since it's an LN adaptation. The conclusion of F/Z was predetermined, and Urobuchi cannot change it. That accounts for a lot of why F/Z was much less Psycho-Pass like than other Urobuchi works.
Madoka is Urobuchi's most positive work. Well, at least contemporary Urobuchi anyway.

It's interesting that Cowboy Bebop is quite well known in NA, but not really placed in such a high pedestal there. In any case, yes the episodic methodology makes me think of the old TV days, where people would reoutinely miss episodes. No arcs? No problem. SD reminds me a lot of Zetsubo Sensei, for some reason. lol

Actually I think Urobuchi also wrote the F/Z LN. The anime is comparatively newer and better quality than the Stay Night anime. It definitely reminded me of how he often deconstructs ideals in the stories he wrote (i.e. you see a lot of arguments between the characters about what makes a hero/king/etc in Zero).
Even considering the nature of the Holy Grail War in F/Z, some of the deaths killed my soul again. I guess it's only positive because of how F/SN turned out but pretty bittersweet.
Madoka really feels a lot more brighter. Kinda thankful for that but it makes all the dark parts of the anime stand out more. Eeek.

I think Cowboy Bebop was well received in NA since AS still runs it sometimes on their late-night programming. FMA:B and InuYusha are the other two I remember seeing a lot on AS too. Really prefer the episodic stuff sometimes because I tend to forget long-running plots heheh. It's also easier to get people into since you can just drop into a new episode and drop out without missing too much of the overall plot.
Just checked out Zetsubo Sensei. Looks like something I have to add to my ever-growing backlog!

To be honest, I never really like Cowboy Bebop. There are a few episodes of it that I like such as the Shuttle episode but overall I just don't really find myself eager to watch it. Maybe because it has been on reruns for the last ten plus years or something.
Now to Space Dandy, while it had a rough start, I do enjoy this series a lot more. It has a lot of episodes where I find myself interesting and the one from last night was rather sweet. Very tripy though but I think that is part of the magic. Certainly isn't a Cowboy Bebop when it comes to tone.

Madoka really feels a lot more brighter. Kinda thankful for that but it makes all the dark parts of the anime stand out more. Eeek.
I double check. You seem to be right on the F/Z being an Urobuchi LN. I suppose the only restriction he had was "connect it back to F/SN". that makes a lot more sense now. Ufotable has always been a fantastic animation studio. They didn't do F/SN, but if you compare the animation at the time in their works (Kara no Kyoukai), you'd see that it was still top notch animation.
Also, another F/SN later this year. I'm hoping for Heaven's Feel because Dark Sakura is <3. And also the possibility of a Rin and Saber Alter rereleases on the figures.
Ya I can see that probably being the reason. I also think there's a huge dose of nostalgia too. I mean, if I go back and watch DBZ, I'd probably not be able to sit through it nowadays.
AGH I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THAT EPISODE. LET THE ESCALATION BEGINNNNN
But seriously the E4 working with Satsuki in that fight was awesome.
KLK21
Ya, they are really ramping it up for the climax. It's in a couple episodes.
Haha, so true.

Yeah. Prior to the ending, I was comparing Kill la Kill with Gurren Lagaan but realize that I shouldn't. GL had MEGA universe sized robots fighting in space which is impossible to compare to girls wearing sailor fuku to fight a crazy mother.
Either way, that was some way to end a show which I am glad was done how it was.
Also, Mako is just so precious.

I pretty thoroughly enjoyed Kill la Kill. The ending may have been a little underwhelming in light of Gurren Lagann, but out of that context, I thought it wrapped really well.
I'm currently working on Spice & Wolf. I'm only two episodes in, but I'm absolutely in love with the show.

I'm trying to decide if I should watch Kill la Kill. It has a big fanbase, and people love to discuss it but I fear I can be too picky. I am very open minded though, I'm not easily offended and such I just crave good character development and a smart plot. I'm not sure if Kill la Kill has either of those things, anyone care to tell me otherwise? haha. :P

No, it doesn't really have brilliant character development or an entirely original plot. It's pretty friggin' awesome though. The visuals are gorgeous and the characters are a hot-blooded mess of awesome.

Just rewatched it last night, was an even better experience without the multilingual subtitles and horrible cam corded quality haha. I definitely recommend rewatching it now to anyone who hasn't yet. It's an awesome anime movie, but part of me wishes it was a season two or the anime series or at least a 6 or 7 part series since it felt a tiny bit rushed and a LOT happened. I loved some of the "for the fan things" like the magical girl transitions (Kyoko is the best!!) and the fight scenes are great. Eeek.
It was beautiful to watch again.

I picked up a lot of stuff that I didn't see the like 5th/6th time through. this movie is packed with a lot of little things and checkov's objects are everywhere if you look carefully for them. It's incredible how much they packed into such a small package.
There's a Homura 1st take version of audio, which gives you the 1st take of Homura's dub for the movie, which essentially changes the flavour and meaning of the ending completely. I'm glad they didn't use the 1st take, but if you're SUPER hardcore die-hard, it's worth it to go through it again.
The story hasn't ended for Madoka. So...ya wait a couple years. Urobuchi isn't done yet, afaik.

However, whenever I see Homura, I keep thinking he's you because your avatar has been Homura for the last two years so that's how I've always pictured you in my head. It's weird as hell. x.x
I was thinking though... there should be a guy version of Madoka Magica but instead it's about how a bunch of gym rats become Magical Bros.

After the initial shock, I spent most of Saturday morning reading critical reviews of the film. In particular, Bobduh's recently article (http://wrongeverytime.com/2014/07/14/the-rising-tide-madoka-rebellion-and-communal-culture/) about the film really put into perspective some of the things that I wtf'd at. I still definitely need to watch the whole movie again to piece it together, though.
I would contend that the entire movie is Gen Urobuchi thumbing his nose at Hideaki Anno moreso than his fanbase. The film, stylistically, is quite similar to End of Evangelion in ways that I feel like Urobuchi was trying to outdo Anno. In some ways, he succeeds. In terms of pure vision, the artistic design of Rebellion is ****ing gorgeous. However, during the phantasmagoria scene of Rebellion, the narrative is driven far more by plot than it is by themes, unlike End, wherein the Phantasmagoria propels and climaxes the themes of Evangelion.
As a sidenote, one of my favorite bits of the movie is when everything goes to **** there are signs in the movie saying "Do you enjoy the movie?" Definitely got the sense that Urobuchi was mocking his audience there and loved every second of it.
Homura

Lord Celebi
I like the read, rusty.
My initial analysis of the movie did actually state that the first hour or so was a critique of the fanbase, i.e. an illusion written for the fanbase specifically for Urobuchi to write down upon. It's his statement of the fanbase being wrong. It's interesting that this particular review also has the same interpretation as I do, as the majority of critics and reviewers consider it as simple fanbase pandering and fan service. Still, his insistence that the entirety of the movie is essentially "indulgence" does annoy me, if you consider that the final half hour of the movie was nowhere near what fans would call indulgent, and it alienated many fans.
There were many, many examples of people stating Homura went completely out of character in the final part of the movie. That's preposterous, because Homura is internally consistent throughout the entirety of the movie. The only things that changed about her as a character was her methods and her understanding of the world. Rebellion is a character piece, an exploration of Homura as a character, tossed in with fluff and fan pandering that ultimately gets shattered. This is why Rebellion is a departure from the original series, because it's not about magical girls and their struggles. It's about Homura and only Homura.
However, the urgency of Homura's decision was one she had to make. Kyubey continued to mock her throughout the witch portion of the movie. His tacit confirmation (by not revealing anything, as usual) of what he, as part of the universe, would do to Madoka enforces the fact that Homura cannot possibly protect Madoka in her current state as a witch, much less in the state where she would become (non-existence). She had to destroy/separate the law of cycle herself to protect Madoka.
I must admit, much of what I like about Homura is due to how reflective of me she is. I'm, ironically not much different from her in her past and current form. What I ended up seeing at the end was not strictly an act of violence, but rather an act of selfishness and selflessness. To her, and to me as I was watching it, there was the option of inaction and failure to protect Madoka, or action to actively do so. In that sense, her decision was logical. Why not do something in the grey area to get what we want?

But if you're more into the whole Gurren Lagaan thing, there's Kill La Kill and No Game No Life.

The popular stuff from this season are Sailor Moon, Akame ga Kill (think attack on titan but with a faster pacing), and fate/Kalied Liner Prisma Ilya 2wei (for the magical girl in you). Some also recommend Tokyo Ghoul and that terrorist anime as well.

Oh man, if you liked the DEEN adaptation of F/SN, Ufotable is doing a reboot of that coming out in the fall. I've seen the PVs for it and it's so good (and definitely could be a good adaptation of the VN). I just feel so happy that this is happening because the final route is also being adapted for the first time. *throws confetti*
As for this season, I've narrowed my list down to Space Dandy, Zankyou no Terror, Aldnoah.Zero, SAOII, and Stardust Crusaders. Had to drop Ace of Diamond and Haikyuu along with Tokyo Ghoul because there's too much anime I'm watching at the moment. That, and I'm watching Darker than Black and Evangelion as well. I've also just picked up Shingeki no Bahamut (too bad this week was a recap episode :[ ), and I have to say I really love it. I'm like the opposite. I thought the first season was vastly superior to the second. I just finished a bunch of anime during break so... my thoughts on them (Going off what I've written in my tags on my MAL):
Code Geass
Going to start with this one first because it's the one I don't like too much. I get that the show is meant to be quite cheesy (with the amount of pizza there is, I'm not surprised), however it worked against me in this case, which is unfortunate. But! I prefer the second season since it does improve upon the first in most areas.
Story - I found the story somewhat intriguing. In R1, we see Lelouch moving around the political landscape in Area 11, which made sense because he was trying to build up his organization before tackling larger problems. On the other hand, R2 was mostly Lelouch working on a global scale as we can see by his dealings with the Chinese Federation and Brittania as a whole. I prefer R2 more because it's better paced for me than the first season, plus gives a lot of closure the show as a whole.
Characters - Man, I kind of don't want to comment on this one too much. I don't like Lelouch as much though I do recognize his genius. He is driven by his emotions and I do like how it does lead to his downfall in R1 and parts of R2. Not every character can be perfect and I think Lelouch is a good example of that. On the other hand, I understood Suzaku's motivations and found it ironic that Lelouch picked him to be the new Zero. It's something like glory to zero (I'm terrible). I liked other characters too, such as Karen and Orange, though I found that the only really dynamic characters out of the cast would be Lelouch, Suzaku (at the end), Karen, and possibly Ougi/Vileta. I may be forgetting a few, but the majority of the cast was defined by one major quality throughout the show.
Art - My major gripe with the show, I didn't like the CLAMP style with the noodle arms and the weird hands. The mech design looked cool but the colors agh. So I basically spent like most of R1 getting used to it, and then R2 was a bit better about it. Still a problem, but hey I guess the justification for the mech was to be intimidating so that worked.
Sound - Not my favorite, found it a little too overtheatrical for my tastes. The tubas didn't help either during the dialogue, and I had trouble hearing when the characters would speak because the music would be loud. I guess it would be kind of pointless for me to hear dialogue when I'm watching it subbed but it does help to know which character is speaking some times T^T
So for now, I'm rating R1 as 6/10 and R2 as 7/10. It's something I might rewatch, but I have too much in my backlog.
Mononoke
Ah Mononoke. Not Princess Mononoke, but the show known as Mononoke. It's about a medicine seller that goes around cleansing the world of spirits known as Mononoke. Think about it as a bit similar to Mushishi in that sense, but with more... deadly consequences.
Story - So Mononoke is made up of 5 arcs that's around 2-3 episodes long. They aren't connected except for the Medicine Seller, but I found the arcs to be pretty interesting with each premise. So the thing about Mononoke is that in order to cleanse them, the Medicine Seller needs to know the Mononoke's Form, Truth, and Regret. Most of the arc is devoted to figuring that out, and usually leads to a mystery/horror type atmosphere (if you don't believe me about the horror, the first arc is unsettling once you figure it out). While the formula is the same for each arc, I liked how the development of the plot and character gets fleshed out. This is pretty apparent in the final arc (since it's a mystery of who did the thing) but is also found in a lot of other arcs such as the Noppera-Bo one. I got hooked enough to watch all of the series in two sittings so that's a plus.
Characters - Partly covered above in the story, the only recurring character is the Medicine Seller, and he still remains a mystery from beginning to end. I'm not sure how to talk about how the characters develop from arc to arc, but the show starts with the flat character and peels it apart to reveal motivations and pasts and emotions to find what and why the Mononoke is there. This kind of character development is my favorite and particularly fitting for the length of the arcs. There's twists and turns because of those characters as well.
Art - This is perhaps my favorite part of the whole show. The art resembles ukiyo-e and is very much like paper cutouts. I falsely thought that this anime was one done by Yuusa because it did resemble the people of Ping Pong the Animation. In any case, the colors are my favorite, emphasizing the mood shifts especially in Nue. While the animation is somewhat minimalist, it does suit the feel of the show as a mystery type thing. It's all so pretty aahhh
Sound - The OP and ED songs grew on me and I never really skipped them while I was watching the show. The sound also served to accent the horror/tension we as the audience should be feeling, and I believe a lot of it was period-type instruments. I'm terrible at IDing instruments but I found that the sound added to the experience more than anything. I do like the Medicine Seller's VA though some of the voices of the female characters were a little offputting because of their pitches.
I rated Mononoke a 9/10 in my book. Probably will rewatch it in the future again since it's so short.
As for other things, I'm finishing up Space Dandy S2 today. Might write up something later for Barakamon because that show is so adorable Q___Q

The TV ending was barely an ending as far as I'm concerned, and EoE, although a bit more solid, is unbelievably... Just... I don't have words. I don't have words.
Spoilers Beyond This Point.
The ending confuses me greatly. As far as I can tell, Shinji and Asuka are the only humans left, although it does seem to be implied that other people can come back. Why did Shinji try to strangle Asuka though? My brain hurts.

There's a couple competing theories. The primary school of thought amongst Evangelion academia (based on some vaguely canonical Carddas trading card that was printed in Japan) was that Shinji was trying to see if she was still real. Within Instrumentality, Asuka would be unable to put up any resistance to the assault. However, in the real world, Asuka would be able to defend herself. I really don't like this one myself and the piece of merchandise that backs it up, besides being extratextual in the first place, doesn't have a clear direct line back to Anno.
"Shinji renounced the world where all hearts had melted into one and accepted each other unconditionally. His desire... to live with 'others' — other hearts that would sometimes reject him, even deny him. That is why the first thing he did after coming to his senses was to place his hands around Asuka's neck. To feel the existence of an 'other'. To confirm rejection and denial."
Other theories that have been proposed:
Asuka chose to return the world in order to die properly and was hoping Shinji would finish the job based on her experiences within Instrumentality.
Since abuse is the only "love" that Asuka knows, Shinji lashing out at her is the "advance" that she had been looking for from him the entire time, and returned this gesture by stroking his cheek (the intimacy that Shinji has always wanted).
My personal theory: during the first choking scene, Shinji finally decides he is tired of Asuka's emotional and sexual abuse, so he finally stands up for himself and chokes her out. When he washes up on the beach, having just experienced the trauma of Instrumentality and sees Asuka, the omnipresent "bully" in his life, Shinji, who now finally has a sense of self-worth, is willing to defend himself, and unwilling to live in a world populated solely by Asuka, finishes the job he started within Instrumentality.
Regardless of your canonical interpretation of the scene, metaphorically, it hammers home the main theme of the show: even though humans often hurt each other, sometimes they choose not to. This is what makes human interaction worthwhile.
EoE is one of my favorite films ever. I've watched it about 8 times since I first discovered it and am pretty well-read on various interpretations of the film. Feel free to pick my brain--I've thought pretty extensively about pretty much every aspect of the film.

To be honest, every one of those interpretations confuse me in some way. I can't even seem to explain how, it's just that the entire movie just messed with my head.
To be honest, I'm confused on what the whole instramentality thing actually was. I have an idea, but I don't know enough to be able to explain it. In the end though, Shinji stopped choking Asuka didn't he? I still don't understand why he would want to kill her in the first place though.

Using the Mass Production Evas, SEELE created an Anti-AT Field which shattered every single AT field on the planet. Without AT Fields separating people (symbolically the fear of rejection and closeness that keeps people apart--the "space between us"), everyone merges into one single consciousness inside of the Tree of Life. Everybody can hear everyone else's thoughts.
Asuka is a bully, plain and simple. She's clearly being eaten alive by her own insecurities, so she tries to reaffirm herself by knocking Shinji down both emotionally and sexually. It's clear that Shinji, as a teenage boy, badly desires carnal knowledge of her. Asuka, being completely immature about it, uses her sexuality to tease and degrade Shinji. It's no surprise that after finally being exposed to her raw mind that Shinji finally has enough and decides to stand up for himself.
It should be noted that I really hate Asuka.

Oh, no, she's an excellently written character. I hate her because she's fairly despicable and treats Shinji pretty miserably. Asuka is very much not best girl.

She was supposed to be a tsundere taken to a logical extreme, including how a backstory can change someone. However, it generally backfired as she became the icon of tsundere instead. Life is weird.
The point of evangelion was to have everybody being unlikeable. Shinji is generally the opposite of the "cool hero mc" that these types of anime normally have, Asuka and Rei are extensions of the tsundere and kuudere archetypes, etc.

I'd disagree that they're intentionally unlikable. They all just have flaws and psychoses that prevent them from being normal. I generally like Shinji, Rei, and even Gendo because I understand their characters and why they do what they do. With Asuka, I just think that most of her tsundere stuff crosses the line for Shinji. Honestly, throughout the course of just the series, I think that Asuka did more to mess Shinji up than Gendo did.

Naw I think they are. This is Anno after all, and he explicitly stated, "I tried to include everything of myself in Neon Genesis Evangelion—myself, a broken man who could do nothing for four years." source of translation (http://evangelion.wikia.com/wiki/Hideaki_Anno). In essence, he put much of himself into the story, mainly the parts of himself that he loathed. It's not saying that they can't be characters you can related to, because it's clearly how Anno sees it. However, through his words, it's clear his intentions were to make them unlikeable characters.
It's generally clear that he does not like the fanbase (http://wiki.evageeks.org/Statements_by_Evangelion_Staff) either.
Anime fans and the anime industry are also indefinite. In a manner of speaking all of Japan is indefinite. I hated this, and I wanted to construct a barrier between myself and society. Expressing it in terms of the show, it was an “AT Field,” a pattern [of behavior] where I would tear apart or reject anything that crossed the boundary line between myself and others. Perhaps [that was the] “barrier of the heart.”

Yeah, but that doesn't mean the character has to be unlikeable. If Shinji = Anno, then Anno just thought he himself to be unlikeable when he was a perfectly okay chap. Anno may think that these characteristics are normal because of depression, but it doesn't make it that way.

Right, it might not come out the way it was intended, but it's pretty clear Anno set out to make a character unlikeable. I never stated that you as a viewer can't like the characters, just that they were intended to be unlikeable mainly due to what Anno set out to do.
Anno also set out to intentionally make Asuka essentially a disgusting character, of how a Tsundere might look like, and she instead became THE icon for Tsundere who's well loved by many otakus. What happened was completely the opposite of what was intended, even if it did work for you, as you do hate Asuka (she came out as intended for you). Same with Rei, Anno set out to describe another aspect of Shinji with Rei, but instead the fandom accepted her as her own character, even creating a new archetype of moe in the Kuudere.

My understanding of the creep-factor with the Rei-fandom was that since she is, on the surface, a blank slate they can graft whatever personality they want on her. :X

Favorite anime? Hm… that depends on which the regards you are speaking. If you're talking about the anime they show the younger age groups such as Avatar the Last Airbender (which taught me that not being able to see well makes you a bada**) and Beyblade then I would say Pokemon is my favorite. I'm still following it and it's starting to get good again (I almost stopped because of Unova). But if you're talking about anime like Durarara (one of my favorite openings ever), Fairytail (zodiac signs ftw), and One piece (don't even get me started here) then the Fate series (Fate/Zero, Fate/Staynight, and Fate/staynight unlimited Bladeworks) are my favorite.

As for recent watches, just finished Mud Grass from Mushishi and... that was really brutal compared to the episodes before. God, I'll be sad when Zoku Shou finishes :(
Noblejanobii, I love the hell out of Baccano!, even more so than DRRR!!. Can't wait for the x2 season to come out for DRRR in the winter since there's so much more that needs to be adapted in the series.
My all-time favorites are Ping Pong the Animation (which I'm rewatching) and Mushishi. Lupin the Third is my one true love (in a general sense) because I've gotten way too hooked on the whole series, especially with the release of the Gravestone of Daisuke Jigen and the Woman Named Fujiko Mine. I've watched Gravestone like 4-5 times already... maybe I'm just obsessed.

Yeah the subs are out for Gravestone (actually really fast compared to the Detective Conan vs Lupin movie but I guess that makes sense). The animation is pretty good and I like Blue Jacket Lupin a lot. He's up to his old antics again, and I practically squealed when I saw the ending.

I'm not sure where in the plot this season of F/SN will stop at before the second season, but if it's where I'm thinking, hooo boy, that's a scary cliffhanger. Then I can curse Ufotable and end up twiddling my thumbs for the spring season.

Fan service does tend to lower the quality of an anime. I feel like the japanese version of high school of the dead would have been a lot better without boob and panty shots every five seconds. The subbed version took itself very seriously and the fanservice distracted from the seriousness. The english dub, on the other hand, made very effective use of it. The english dub wasn't serious AT ALL. They added the f-Bomb every five seconds to couple with the fan service and added so many jokes that you couldn't take it really seriously. The fan service helped amplify this. Sure it was still VERY distracting (especially given that all the girls lack the invention known as a bra and each breast seems to have its own physics engine from the matrix) but it was funny by that point.
I haven't seen Lupin so I can't give my opinion on the fan service in that particular anime.

I have issues with how anime as a cultural expression and as a medium is homogenizing into basically porn. It's only there because producers refuse to take new risks with their productions and would instead rather cater to and enable the hikikomori crowd. It's bad for the industry and for the art as it alienates everyone that isn't sexually deprived.
I haven't seen Lupin so I can't give my opinion on the fan service in that particular anime.
Lupin III is excellent. I'd highly recommend either the new Fujiko Mine series or Lupin III: Part 2 (AKA "Red Jacket" Lupin).

I think it's kind of understandable considering the show has their main focus on Fujiko rather than Lupin. Though it's kinda a trend for Fujiko to get the short end of the stick sometimes. And she does end up being the fanservicey one (I'm looking right at you Gravestone T_T), which does annoy me because I liked the dynamic of the Green Jacket series more with Lupin getting outwitted a lot by Fujiko.
As for the fanservice, I think it depends on the show you're watching. Highschool of the Dead is notoriously fanservicey, while Free! is on the other end of the spectrum as well. Then you have shows like Kill la Kill, that make fun of the fanservice by being overly blatant with it. And there's shows like Mushishi that don't have anything to do with fanservice. At least, I haven't been noticing it a lot in the shows I'm watching.
And I definitely second the motion with Lupin III. The Woman Known as Fujiko Mine is pretty dark and hits on the tone of the original manga with all the visuals. There's a lot of nudity but it's a really good show once you get past it. However, I do recommend watching Green Jacket (Part 1) as well since it's the original series and adapts parts of the original manga. Red Jacket is also fun, but I find it a little too episodic/wacky for my tastes. At least, I prefer the darker tone of the series rather than the light-hearted ones.

Yes I think a lot of anime has fanservice in one way or another. There are a select few that are mature enough to have almost no fanservice. Fate/Zero, for example, had like no fanservice at all. I know Gilgamesh was naked at the end but there's a perfectly good explanation for that. But I wouldn't discredit an anime just because it has fanservice. Despite all the boobs and panties flying everywhere every five seconds, I loved high school of the dead. I actually found the fanservice humorous (especially in the case of the nurse who I have nicknamed Dr. Boobs because… Eh do I need to explain?). But then there's anime like Free! I originally started watching it because of the swimming. Now… I am ashamed to admit that the fact that the only reason I'm still watching it is because no one is really wearing any clothes for most of the episodes. ^^;

They weren't just making fun of it; Kill la Kill's fan service was metatextual satire. It basically asks the viewer "So you like fanservice, huh? Here's some ****ing fanservice." Ragyo's molestation of Satsuki is a pretty apt metaphor for just how creepy the people that derive sexual pleasure from anime are, very similar to Shinji's sploosh from End of Evangelion.

Fan service always detracts from good writing as it forces the show into a niche that it normally wouldn't belong. It polarizes audiences and severely limits the amount of people that can be earnestly interested in and accept the text as a work of art. And fan service being the main point of an anime is what I'm raging against. It is poisoning the industry.

By having fan service, you are already wasting precious screen time on what could've been used for character development or at least worldbuilding scenes. IMHO good writing and fan service don't go hand-in-hand. The focus shouldn't even be on the fan service. Of course, as long as fanservice is presented more of an afterthought, it's tolerable for me. I rather a five-minute cutscene than a season's dedication.

And while that's all true what I don't like is when people discredit animes that have fanservice. Highschool of the dead, for example, had an awesome plot had it not had so much fanservice I think it would have been a reputable anime that would have grossed a lot of money because when it came out america was in that hype zone that you through zombies in it and it is instantly sold out. However, there are some animes, like Free!, where it is somewhat unavoidable (I mean they're swimming in competitions meaning no shirts) so producers do try to make the best of it. Plus some animes try to appeal more to their target audiences. Free!'s target audience is obviously girls so adding six packs everywhere is definintely appealing (I would know). And with HOTD, the target audience was mainly guys, and in the words of one of my favorite anime reviewers, "Guys have ****s, and ****s like these. Really, though, how many people watch porn for the plot? Same thing. Anything with excessive fan service has its writing dictated by getting people naked. It could have the best writing and characterization in the world but it won't detract from the fact that its still porn. It won't do anything to advance the legitimacy of animation or anime as a medium in the eyes of the public.
I think you have it backwards with Free! The show was made to show mostly naked men--swimming is just the excuse.

It won't do anything to advance the legitimacy of animation or anime as a medium in the eyes of the public.
I think you have it backwards with Free! The show was made to show mostly naked men--swimming is just the excuse.
But that doesn't detract that people, like myself, do exist that are willing to watch anime with excessive fanservice for plot. HOTD has an amazing plot, the fanservice just makes it hard to take it as seriously as it needs to be. Doesn't mean I that I won't watch it. Free! is similar. As much as I like the fact that the guys are 3/4 naked most of the time, the reason I got into it was because of the swimming plot. I watch shows for plot and if it has fanservice, well then ok, I'll just ignore it. Some people just have more tolerance than others and given your tone, I'm guessing you have like no tolerance whatsoever. Just because something has near porn in it doesn't mean the writing and such aren't good. There are many people that I know or have met online that watch shows for PLOT and deal with the fanservice. The people that don't have the tolerance for it are missing out because a lot of anime does have fanservice. Your argument seems to association fanservice with the show being automatically bad and that's incorrect. Just because it deters from the plot doesn't mean the show still isn't good.

Most of the anime I watch don't have high levels of fan service, just minimal stuff. It doesn't usually bother me. If fan service is very noticeable then I occasionally find it is taking up precious time for building the story and such.
I just started Zankyou no Terror. I'm really excited for this one but I may not be watching much of it over this week due to other responsibilities...

That's a good way to look at it! I find that fan service doesn't occur in the genre I watch though. Typically horror, or sci fi. It usually seems to be more of a SOL thing. Shin Sekai Yori has a tiny bit but it didn't bother me a bit! I don't think I would refrain from watching an anime over fan service, but I may dislike it if there's too much (because it's blatantly obvious).
I don't always think that fan service is in an anime because the story is bad though.

I watch a wide variety of anime so I encounter fanservice quite often, especially since I'm partial to the adventure/fantasy genre. In case you aren't aware, fantasy + adventure= girls with large breasts. For whatever reason. But I have developed a tolerance to it so I just say "hey, I can't do anything about. Might as well make fun of it and enjoy the story." Too many people discredit an anime because of fanservice and I hate that happens because there are a lot of good stories out there, they just have fanservice in them.
On a completely unrelated note, anyone here a fan of the reviewer Gigguk?
Ganyu
12-16-2014, 03:19 AM
I usually don't come across much fanservice, given that I typically watch fantasy/scifi. But I'll chalk that up to my strict filtering and away-from-the-mainstream tastes.
I've heard of Gigguk but I don't follow him. I prefer not to pay attention to reviewers until after watching the anime because I want to maintain objectivity in impressions. XD

Well not all animes have it and many reputable animes don't but that doesn't mean it still doesn't happen. Like I said, I watch many different genres so I come across it a fair amount.
He's really funny to be honest. I usually watch his videos after watching the show as well and trust me, it's so worth it. His sword Art online review was pure genius to say the least. He made so many references in that video it was hilarious.

I love his Fate/Zero review. Some said he overrated it but I thought he underrated it but gave it a fair score of 9.5. I guess that rubs Code Geass fans wrongly.

I can link a couple of his videos here if you wish to see them. His top 20 anome character review is really good (but several videos long).
His fate/zero review was really good because he brought up all valid points and while I think fate/zero did deserve a 10/10, I can see why he gave it a 9.5.
Anyway, who is your favorite fate/zero character? Personally, I really only liked the servants to be honest. There was like one master I liked and I liked Maya and Kiritsugu's wife but that was about it. Tolerated Kiritsugu, barely tolerated Diarmuid's master, loved Iskander's master, I didn't like Gilgamesh's originally master but I felt bad for him later on, caster's master was just a crazy man, I liked berserker's master at first but grew to hate him later on, and DO NOT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON KIREI KOTOMINE!! I never thought I could hate an anime character so much.
I was so happy when he died and then it was like oh no he's still alive and I was like YOU FREAKING PAPILLION JUST GO FREAKING DIE ALREADY!!

Ahhh F/Z, it's been a while so bear with me. Note that I watched F/Z after I finished playing F/SN so some of my opinions are colored by what I learned in F/SN.
Kiritsugu - Probably one of the guys I feel bad for out of the cast along with Kariya to an extent, especially considering what happened to him after the Holy Grail War. Wife's dead, can't even see the daughter, lives the rest of his life in pain because of the Grail's curse. That. Sucks. And I think his actions were in line with his ideals, though they did change after the war. He did manage to mess up Shirou with the whole "ally of justice" thing...
Saber - Don't feel like commenting on this, knowing her backstory coupled with the ending of F/Z is bittersweet. I don't blame her if she resents Kiritsugu for what he did but then there's F/SN.
Toikomi and Kariya - After much musing... screw that fire guy. Seriously. He gave up Sakura to whatever the hell the Matou is. Some crazy crap went down because of that in the future. He gave her up TO THAT. NOPE. He probably had it coming with the backstabbing. I really don't feel sorry for this guy. I just don't. Kariya on the other hand... he was noble and selfish at the same time. I respect the guy for going through that much pain to save Sakura, though him nearly killing Aoi, ouch. I don't really hate the guy and can understand his motivations. Berserker was one heck of a Servant to have especially considering how much it hurt him to stay in the war.
Waver and Iskandar -favorite relationship, Waver just grows so damn much. Annnnnd then his current state in F/SN is hilarious. If I ever rewatch F/Z, I'll talk about this relationship more often.
Kayneth and Lancer - Lancer gets the short end of the stick again. Thanks KFC, you prick. Arrogant, but I can see why he was competent at what he does. Except for that part where Kiritsugu just decides to blow up the hotel.
Kirei - He's a really cool character to me in my opinion, and in actuality, very similar to Kiritsugu. I don't remember his exact motivations in the Holy Grail War in F/SN or F/Z, but he really does pull it off in the best way. Shinji definitely beats Kirei out in the most hateable character in the universe since he's pretty irredeemable.
It's getting late for me, so I'll just leave this here. Blagh, F/Z was a great anime in my opinion. It's apparently rated 8/10 for me, but I'm a hard rater anyways.
Noblejanobii

Kiritsugu- while his actions did line up with his ideals and his suffering was bad, I felt like killing everyone was a bit… well overkill to say the least. Plus he used kind of cheap tactics to get his wants across. I mean, when he killed Lancer's master, one: NO LANCER NO!!! Two: The whole loophole thing (which I knew was going to happen anyway) was just cheap.
Saber- She is justified in her hatred I believe because of what Kiritsugu made her do.
Kirei- To be honest I am probably slightly biased against this guy, given that he represents the church (specifically the Catholic Church if you look at the formatting of the church shown in the anime) and I am the religion he represented. He was just downright sadistic and while his character development was drastic (which is something I look for in an anime) it took a turn for the worst in my opinion. At first he was just a pawn and then he became like Kiritsugu, willing to take any dirty trick or opportunity to kill to get what he wanted. I just utterly hated this guy and it probably didn't help that after this anime was released in English dub I was tormented in school for months following because of his religious representation. At least with Kiritsugu, he got some redemption with Shirou, but Kirei… oh my gosh… *shakes head*

I don't really have a favourite. I mean, I did form attachments to them but in a platonic intellectual sort of way because seven-way mind games. xD But I'll give my opinions for all characters (that had significant impact on the Holy Grail War).
King Arturia: Every show needs a heroic paragon and Saber fits that title to a tee. I'm not fond of her, but I'm impressed with the lore-play of her NPs.
Emiya Kiritsugu: The 'Batman' of the series. He was probably the most fleshed-out character with the most interesting development path. His love for Irisviel and Maya - two women who relied on him for support - and his friction with Saber was well-executed and well, real.
Irisviel von Einzbern: More of Saber's Master than Kiritsugu, despite being proxy. I find her naive sense of justice (naive because she was influenced by Kiritsugu) akin to Psycho Pass' Akane. Her growth into someone who can use her beliefs to face stronger challenges was a bit cliche, though I find her quite likable.
Maya: Strong female character with a dark background. I'm going out on a limb by saying she could be Urobutcher's perspective on how women are treated like objects/tools. Her love for Kiritsugu was what made her human.
Tokiomi Tohsaka: Rich elitist but not as much as a douchebag than Kayneth. Typical caricature of the working father who prioritizes business over family. The Tohsakas are the stereotypes of a typical upper-class family, with women being oppressed.
Gilgamesh: Does whatever the f--- he wants because he is the King of Babylon with the greatest treasures. Oh and he's totally not in a homosexual relationship with a priest. I love his fight scenes the most, especially against Berserker.
Kotomine Kirei: Sociopath? Priest? Both? IDEK, he's like Makishima Shougo to Kiritsugu.
Hassan-i-Sabbah: Hardly has anything to comment on except that he has a cool and nearly broken NP.
Alexander the Great: Funniest character with the best charisma and manliest charm. His straightforward brutal force is a relaxed perspective from all the suspenseful strategic fighting.
Waver: I actually like him, only because of his relationship development with Rider. Hands down, the best Master-Servant dynamic.
Kayneth Archibald El-Melloi: #1 Elitist Douchebag. Favourite scene of him was him vs Kiritsugu as well as him vs his wife >:D
Sola-Ui Nuada-Re Sophia-Ri: Best named female ever. xD
Diarmuid: Male counterpart to Saber. I love the ending animations of his legend. And isn't he just the hottest Servant ever?
Ryuunosuke: Crazy killer who was probably just a mouthpiece for the division between atheism and theism, what with all that talk about God being a sadist.
Gilles De Rais: His relationship with his Master is almost symbiotic for pleasure. Creepy Servant, but hey, that's what the lore ordained so no complaints.
Kariya Matou: One of the few Masters with a profound motive (the other being Kiritsugu). He could've greater audience sympathy if the show wasn't set up to lead into the mess titled "Fate: stay/night".
Sir Lancelot: Most awesome NP ever? I love every fight scene with him in it. It moves my black heart. *tear*

TheoreticalSelkie, I just finished Tombstone of Daisuke Jigen and loved it! I want the new Blue Jacket Lupin series to be exactly like this. I was a little disappointed to see Discotek licensed this for domestic release though. They do plan on dubbing this, but unless they license FUNimation to do the dubbing, they're not going to keep the same cast as in Fujiko Mine. Though, if its an LA dub, they might get David Hayter back as Lupin which would be an okay substitute for Sonny Strait.

IS ANYONE WATCHING DEATH PARADE? OMG
Someone suggested Death Parade to me and I plan to give it a try tonight.
So, I've finished Clannad and just about finished the first season of Mushishi. Mushishi Started off kinda weak to me but I think I just had to get used to it, because the more I watched the more I liked it. I gave it an 8.1. Clannad started really slow but got pretty good around episode five. I thought it was good enough to be worth watching, but I still only gave it a 7.8.
Spoilers for Clannad:
Oh my god though, I am so mad about what they did with Fuko. I HATE that they made her randomly appear throughout the rest of the anime on occasions. For me, an important part of what happens at the end with Fuko was that I didn't know if she was still there in the school all alone or if she had moved on or something. Her appearances showed she was still there but was perfectly fine. That not knowing though was part of what I thought made it sad.

I don't know anything about the route in the VN lol. I don't know anything about the VN period. After Story is next though. I'm just taking a break though since I've got so many anime I want to watch. I'm considering starting Planetes. As for Winter leftovers, I still have to finish up Nanatsu no Taizai and Yoru no Yatterman. I did finish a bunch recently though ;3
Rolling Girls was really awesome, I liked the animation style, even if the story went all over the place. It was so damn colorful and my favorite moment in the series was the bike race in episode 6 (I think). It was just awesome so I'm really happy with it. The other one I finished was Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun and dear god this was great. I laughed my head off a lot, and while I was kinda sad about the ending (dammit Nozaki) I really liked how positive Chiyo was about the whole thing. I think there's more so I'll probably pick up the manga for that at some point.
Dunno what else I may pick up for this season. I may watch Plastic Memories once there's a bunch of episodes out and maybe Digimon Adventure Tri. Gintama I can't until I watch... the rest of the show :P

Noblejanobii - Who are your OTPs for Fate/Stay? I honestly ship Saber x Archer (for reasons to be revealed later in the show) and Shirou x Tohsaka right now. But that stuff's been around since I played the VN heheh.
On another note, I spent the past week watching the Berserk movies. Way to be depressing, Berserk. The biggest thing that rankled me about Berserk was that it's basically CGI (with the main characters looking like they were hand-drawn), which made some stuff really choppy. Like Guts trying to behead people on a horse with that massive sword of his.
It was really nice seeing some of the relationships animated, while others made me pretty sad (Judeau WHYYYY). Needless to say, if you ever plan on checking out the Berserk movies, be forewarned of nudity, violence and gore, and, I dunno, horror (which really applies to the third movie). And then read the manga, because the manga goes on for at least a 100 more chapters after that and you get to see more character development ;D
God, those movies were a downer honestly. *shakes fist*

Ok it depends on which series you're speaking of. If you're talking the original Fate/Staynight series then I'm for ShirouxSaber. If it's for the Fate/Zero and Unlimited Bladeworks shows, then I support SaberxFate/Zero Lancer and ShirouxTohsaka. And I know Fate/Staynight Archer's true identity. If that's who you're talking about then I could see it. But if you're talking about the Fate/Zero archer then what I have to say to you is, "Do you want Saber to be subdued? Because that's exactly what he'll do to her!"

Ahaha, yeah I'm talking about FSN's Archer. Zero Archer is a bit of a douche, but as far as I know, that's mainly due to the time he was summoned in. He's a lot nicer when the present day isn't affecting him. I definitely wouldn't ship him with anyone though. Stay Night's Archer on the other hand, I almost feel sorry for him, but having played through the VN completely, I just want to see him at least have a good ending. That's what I'd like to believe anyways with the Realta Nua patch :P
Well in the end, Shirou x Saber is a super cute pair and should never be destroyed (FHA is like the best for this not going to lie) and Archer is the surly guy in the corner dealing with Lancer bro.

Well my friends always joke that I have Zero's Archer hidden in my closet because I was watching the last episode of Zero and that scene that you should know what I'm talking about but I'm not going to mention because spoilers happened and my friends saw me watching that and they were all like "Oh Janobii, going after the hotties now are we?" I was completely flustered and just shouted that they didn't know anything and then they made the joke about me having a closet shrine and it just kind of went down from there. So if you want to borrow Zero's Archer for like the weekend or something just let me know, he's in my closet for whatever reason.
I'm ashamed to admit I've actually never gone through the visual novels. I know they exist but I've never had the time to go through them. I barely have time to keep up with the anime right now as it is (which is why kissanime.com is a life saver because I don't have to spend a long time trying to find an episode) but it's on my to do list. I know enough about the series though to keep up a decent conversation about the paths though.
I agree the FSN Archer does deserve a good ending. I've read up about him and that poor poor man! I do think he deserves some justice because what happened to him was so unfair!
ShirouxSaber is an adorable shipping! Still SaberxFZLancer is my like original OTP but that's only if ShirouxTohsaka happens. Lol and I see what you did there. *adds to shipping wall*
Also, thank you to whomever said to watch Kekkai Sensen. It's like Durarara and Baccano had a baby! Because I mean when you have scenes like the one featured in the gif below, how can you not love this anime?

I really like Sakura for FSN. Heaven's Feel is probably the most interesting route of the three to me, and I really hope they will anime it now that the other two routes have been animated.

Theoretical Selkie said something about them turning the third route into a series of movies. Which I'm super excited about since I adore UBW. Speaking of UBW, Oh my god I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NEXT WEEK FOR THE NEXT EP!
Started Durarara recently. made it up to EP 12 (+ the 12.5 special). Loving it so far. I like it at least as much as baccano, and arguably more. I died laughing during the part Isaac and Miria made a cameo lol.

Durarara!! is arguably one of the funniest animes out there. But just wait until you get to the X2 series, it's pretty funny too.
Ah yeah they're turning Heaven's Feel into a movie as well which is totally hype because I've heard, of the three routes, it's the most different from the other routes.

That's ok. Most of us watch on an irregular basis as well so you're in good company.
So I caught up with FSNUB today. I was in class when…
Kirei died and I just screamed, "YES VENGEANCE!!" And the seven other people (including the teacher) just stared at me. I looked back at them and was just like "There's this guy I've wanted to die since the beginning of a series and he finally died so I'm really happy right now." My teacher just kind of looked at me, the nodded, and said, "Carry on then."
Also Lancer being sassy to the very end. XD

On subject of FSNUBW... Lancerbro is on par with Broskandar. Not going to lie here, I love them both.
And since I'm here, I'm going to drop this site: BIRTHDAYS (http://schara.sunrockgo.com/). It's a website where you can look up your birthday and see which anime characters you share them with. If you want to look up by date, the green button at the top will be the option you want.
I'm also watching Kekkai Sensen and Stardust Crusaders, and I feel like Kekkai Sensen might edge out FSN for me just on how plain awesome the show is. And I'm the Nasuverse nerd here, SERIOUSLY. Jojo is great as usual, but I need to catch up on the final arc. Soon... we will see the end. Soon. But I don't want it to come Q__Q
Lupin III never :(

Alexander the Great will always be my favorite.
The episode that he died in is actually my favorite number, 23. They also read my favorite Bible verse at the end, Psalms 23. It's also the only episode that I cried during for the entire Fate series things I've watched. I mean he finally got to hear the ocean right as he died! TALK ABOUT THE FEELS!!
But FSN Lancer does come in a close second. While he doesn't play much of a role in the original FSN, he's very important in FSNUB. Plus the amount of sass coming from him is just funny. I mean come on, how can you not like a guy who admits he has an ulterior motive, punches a guy then sarcastically says that it was an accident, and then comments in his last words "Come see me when you're older." HOW CAN SOMEONE NOT LOVE SOMEONE THAT SASSY!! Honor wise I think FZ Lancer is better but if you're arguing who is the sassiest, FSN Lancer takes the cake and the cookies. Man he takes the whole freaking party. Ok, rant done.
Ok, I actually haven't watched Stardust Crusaders, on my list, but I'm trying to finish some other shows that I've started on first. But Kekkai Sensen is hilarious. It's like Baccano and Durarara had a baby. It's a great plot with a lot of confusing twists and turns with enough humor to keep you going. It also helped that the instant I heard Klaus talk in the sub the first time I recognized his voice actor to be the same guy who voices Kiritsugu in the Fate series, but that wasn't what I came for, it was just a bonus.
On a side note, I'm about to finish the Sacred Blacksmith. It seems like it has too much plot to only have 12 episodes but I thought the same thing about Mekakucity Actors and they wrapped up that anime quite nicely. I hope the same for the Sacred Blacksmith. Though, I have to warn you, if you're not tolerant of fan service don't watch it. They actually have boob comparing scenes in episode 8 I think. Though if you've watch High school of the Dead then you should be fine.

Kekkai Sensen is like "wow dammit NIGHTOW YOU"RE BACK". I literally started watching it, then I found out that Kekkai Sensen was written and drawn by Nightow, who did the Trigun series and NOW I'M JUST WHAT THIS IS GREAT. Because I'm a huge Trigun nerd. That's fun stuff.
In either case, yeah I really like the nonlinear plot of KS, it's tied together by some really good worldbuilding in that weird New York there (have you seen the food episode yet IT'S GREAT). I heard that a lot of the cast are VAs from Gintama so some people can't unhear those interactions heheh. Never got around to Gintama myself so I can't attest to that claim.
Lancer is awesome. If you want to hear more sass, after you finish FSN, you should watch some of Carnival Phantasm. Lancer is practically a meme there :P
For Stardust Crusaders, it's the third arc in the Jojo series, so if you haven't watched Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency (the previous seasons) you should get on that before you start Stardust Crusaders because those two seasons have the context for what happens in SC.

Personally I think Gilgamesh is the sexiest of the whole lot but since his ego could swallow their earth I'd rather take FZ Lancer. I don't know if it's his love spot (which if you researched his backstory you'd know was actually placed in the wrong location when they made the anime) or his sense of honor, but I think FZ Lancer is my preference to FSN Lancer. Unless it comes to being sassy, in which case, I reiterate my previous point, FSN Lancer takes the whole party.
Still think FSNUB is better but Kekkai Sensen is great. I'll catch up on it and FSNUB when I finished the Sacred Blacksmith.
For… what exactly?
Ganyu
06-09-2015, 06:38 AM
For telling everyone here about it. :P
Gilgamesh isn't my type. Plus he's overrated; literally every fan girl is obsessed over him. UBW doesn't wow me, probably 'cause I've watched FZ and it just set the bar high for the series. It's good but not great, IMO. (Considering that I've never experienced the VNs, I'm quite lenient.) Kekkai Sensen is refreshing, "Blink and you'll miss it" type of crazy, and completely unexpected which is what makes it a good contender in my eyes. Sadly I think having 12 episodes undermines it as it is being an anime-exclusive arc.

Things I'm watching:
Plastic Memories: Totally about a guy who collects anime figures of his waifus. :3
Arslan Senki: It's not drawn by the FMA mangaka, and not about war and politics and stuff. Ya~
Gintama: Not at all funny.
Things I'm intending to watch:
UBW because Shirou is a smart character
Kekkai Sensen: I don't think this anime takes place in New York.
Nagato-chan: Because robots are cool.
That's all~

I'm currently watching F/SN, Kekkai Sensen, and Durarara, and I like them all so much I can't decide which I like more. I'd probably place F/SN just above Kekkai Sensen just because I LOVE action anime where the protagonist is at a clear disadvantage (Shirou, at least until the past couple of episodes) but overcomes that disadvantage due to their sheer amount of badassery. Durarara is probably slightly above F/SN, especially after the episode I just watched where it basically broke me.
Durarara spoilers:
The episode where we find out who the Saika "Mother" is, but it turns out Sunohara has the real original Saika. I was so mad I didn't notice the connection between the saika "mother"s name (which I can't remember) and the reporters name. That she was the reporters daughter.
As for what you were saying about F/SN Lancer, F/SN Lancer is like, awesome. I haven't seen F/Z yet though so I can't say whether or not F/Z Lancer is more awesome.

You have a point. But I don't obsess over Gilgamesh since Iskander is probably my favorite character overall. I just think Gilgamesh is sexy. I feel like UBW is living up to was FZ set the bar for. It's doing great and it's really expanding upon what the original movie could not. Like after the first UBW movie, I still wasn't sure who Archer was. It was more openly hinted at but it took my friend telling me and pointing out all the clues for me to actually figure it out. Here, there's no question who he is.
Dragon Master Mike
I actually don't like Shirou for whatever reason. Though I usually prefer the servants to the masters anyway but most of the people I know who like the Fate series love Shirou and I've just never found him that appealing. Taiga is probably my favorite non-servant character if I'm honest. Though I will admit, Ufotable has done a fantastic job on giving me a new character to hate with each season. Though no one will be able to get to Kirei Kotomine's level on the amount of hatred I have for him, Shinji got VERY close.
Oh and just wait Mike, it gets much worse.

Idk the action doesn't match up to FZ for me. Granted that could be attributed to how young half of the Masters were. Rin and Ilyasviel are the only competent ones and I was sad that they didn't have more battles. The action reached its low in #9 IMO, and the whole lecture by Archer and Saber's occasional quip was somewhat boring. So far, UBW hasn't achieved a good cogent balance of heroic spirit conflict both physically and ideologically that FZ had. Plus the character dynamics aren't as strong. I don't feel for Shirou the same way I felt for Waver in FZ (and they share several similarities, both being underestimated as a person and a mage, and having larger-than-life Servants). Assassin seems forgotten in the whole Caster saga. Archer's identity wasn't much a riddle for me, but maybe that's why I'm left not as impressed XD;
...now I feel like maybe my gripes are with how the story was written and not the actual anime itself XD I have to praise Ufotable though because the anime is 100x more enjoyable with God-tier animation ^3^. When I can smell the money peeling off the screen, I can sit through any show.

The lacking of action could be attributed to the soundtrack as well. I don't think they did as well with the soundtrack in UBW than in FZ. I mean they pulled the same trick with the gospel choir, but besides the intro and ending themes, none of the songs from this one really stuck with me. That could just be me though.

Noblejanobii Shinji is my most hated character from any anime I've ever watched. Like, legit. I had another character I really hated, but can't remember who it was, so at least until I do, Shinji is the worst.
Ghostwriter Caster's master was competent too right? And I know what you mean about Assassin. F/SN Spoilers Ahead. He literally just kinda disappeared. I wish they would have given him more of an ending, even if it was just a brief explanation of what happened to him. I assume he disappeared after Caster died?

Kirei tops my list by several miles.
Also, if I remember correctly…
Assassin was given a set amount of mana by Castor so in the original FSN anime he disappeared before she died. I don't think he appeared after his initial appearance in the UBW but it's been a while since I saw it. However, it depends. As they explained, servants can live without a supply of mana for a certain set of time. That means it's possible that he's still there guarding the temple, but like I said, I'm unsure. Plus I'm not caught up with the anime right now (I'm an episode or two behind) so I'm just making guesses.

So, after finally finished the sacred blacksmith, I switched back to FSNUB. I finished it mere seconds ago and I'm sobbing so hard. Ufotable did so well, but the reason I am crying is not because I didn't expect the ending. I did, what I didn't expect was the 25th episode.
In short, it does a two year time skip, with Shirou and Rin now in London attending the Clock Tower academy. It's really funny at first but you can tell it gradually becomes more serious. They go and visit Saber's grave, which struck me right through the heart. That made me tear up, but that's not what got me. Shortly after visiting the grave, there is a flashback to two years prior, shortly after the war, telling us the fates of all the other characters that showed up in FSNUB that we did not see how they ended up. Then, when we switch back to present day, we return to Shirou's attending the academy. He is approached by a teacher. I started crying immediately, because there was no mistaking who that teacher was. It was Waver, from Fate/Zero. As if to reinforce who he was, his words assured of his identity. Everything with Iskander came flooding back in that instant and I just started sobbing. The ending is sweet, and you have to skip the credits of the last episode to see the whole thing. But, it is a really good ending. I can assure, the Fate series is the only series that can draw tears from me.

I've been watching Gakkou Gurashi and absolutely loving it. I love the characters, I love the concept, it's got... Actually, I better not say any more outside of a spoiler because it's very easy to spoil. Anyone who might watch this anime who hasn't yet, watch it without reading anything about it beforehand, but based on what I've seen so far, I'd recommend giving it a try.
Spoilers ahead.
I totally didn't see the ending of EP 1 coming. Selkie told me to start watching it without knowing anything about it and at the end of EP 1 I was just like "WOAH WTF JUST HAPPENED." I just thought it was going to be some cute slice of life anime that I probably wasn't going to like but figured I'd actually give a chance.
I guessed that Megunee wasn't real like, episode two, but hearing them actually say she was dead around EP 5 still made my eyes a little watery.

So I have two notes on my agenda:
1. There's an anime club at my college and I'm so excited because we take Tuesday nights and watch four episodes of anime. Two of them are for an ongoing anime and two are for a completed one. We vote on what we watch on Sunday's through Facebook. First meeting is next week and I'm so excited!
2. I just finished Divine Gate. It took me a little bit because I've been busy. Overall it was a really good anime but it can be really confusing at times because they just kind of throw you in at the middle of the story and you can kind of gather the basics by the end but there are a lot of details that are not covered well in my opinion. And the ending is somewhat of a cliffhanger as like these characters you thought had been dead for like five episodes now turn out to not be dead and there's other stuff. If I wasn't aware the anime was based on a mobile game, I might have been much angrier. I think my favorite part of the anime was the different references to things like Scandinavian mythology, Shakespeare, Santa Claus, Arthurian legend, and more. It was quite interesting how well they blended all of that together and the graphics were overall fabulous. Plus the intro song is really catchy.

Alright, this is going to be a really long post.
So, I just watched Guilty Crown. It has a lot of issues in the plot so I wouldn't call it great overall but I did enjoy it quite a bit. I was actually surprised to see that, although like I said I didn't think it was great overall, the main character got a ton of development.
I just want to get the ending straight here because all the incredibly overcomplicated plot that suddenly got dropped in the last few episodes got me all confused. Obviously major spoilers ahead.
So, I just want to get this straight. Inori, Gai, and Shu are actually all siblings. And for some reason none of them remember this. Inori, originally Mana, was born with some kind of power that was never clearly explained, the lost christmas was caused because of how she reacted to her father being killed, and in the aftermath her consciousness was scattered, and Inori was what was left behind.
Oh, and I want to complain a bit because in addition to the plot not really making sense at the end,
HOW THE HELL DID SHU SURVIVE AT THE END. Like, seriously, it just goes from the tower collapsing, everyone leaving shu behind, to skipping ahead a couple of years to show Shu and everyone together, with no explanation what so ever as to how he got out. Why did Ayase not go back for Shu? If Shu died, she was going to die anyway because Shu had her void.
I'm watching Stein's gate now and I find the main character really annoying. Like, I want to like it, it is starting to get interesting, but the MC is driving me crazy. Does he get better later?
And finally, anyone have any good anime suggestions? Anything new or starting soon that looks worth checking out maybe? I'm running out of anime on my to watch list again.

Well I just finished Trigun this morning and other than the ending being really confusing and not answering any of my questions over all it's a really good must see anime.
Nanbaka is pretty good too if you're into comedy animes but it's on going. And if you're looking for action Drifters and Trickster are also pretty good but they're only twelve episodes so you might blow through them quickly.
From here I'll probably finish FLCL so that I can finish it before the next season gets out.
