"Are you up to the challenge?"


Once upon a time, there was a thread on Pokémon Elite 2000 known simply as "The 493." The 493 was a project started by a nameless entity. The idea behind this project was to create a banner, a tag, for every single one of the four hundred and ninety-three Pokémon. This project was renewed by Tombi of that same forum only a year later. It erupted the forum into a frenzy of hectic and messy banner making. I, myself, was included in this lot.

On this day I bring this project to Pokémon Crossroads. However, I call it The 721, for the current amount of Pokémon currently in the Pokédex. My goal is as simple as my predecessors. Create a banner for all seven hundred and twenty-one Pokémon! But we can't do it alone! We need your help!

"We? Who is this we?" You may ask..

Well.. Myself, obviously.. Well.. The magnificent Suicune's Fire! As well as the lovely Braixen! Both talented and wonderful women who have earned my respect.

So then your next question must be.. "Well what can I do to help?"

The Requirements

How do I make a banner for you?


Well first you gotta know how to make a banner. After that, it's pretty easy.

The banner must include an image of the Pokémon you have chosen.

The banner must include the National Pokédex number of the Pokémon you have chosen.

Your chosen images must be official art, only. Or else they won't be featured on the home page. That is unless you DRAW your Pokémon before adding it to a banner. Then by all means.

The banner must be your entirely own creation. If there is a breach of this, it will be proven against you, and you will be punished. Art thieves are not welcome here. I lift, bro.

The banner must not exceed 500 x 250.

The banner cannot have two different species of Pokémon.

How many banners can I submit?


No more than three a day. I would like quality over quantity. Also, you may only reserve three Pokémon at a time.

How do I submit a banner?


Just tell us which Pokemon you would like to reserve, or if you feel lucky, just go ahead and make one for a Pokémon. Once you've finished it, upload it securely onto a Photobucket account or something similar, and post it on here.


ALL MEMBERS OF THE PROJECT MAY HAVE A PROFILE POST TO KEEP ALL OF THEIR COMPLETED BANNERS AND RESERVES IN CHECK.

ALL BANNERS SUBMITTED ARE FREE TO USE IN YOUR SIGNATURES, AS LONG AS YOU CREDIT THE ARTIST WHO MADE IT.

ALSO!
For the sake of sanity, we're going to start of with the first generation, and when it's complete we'll move on to the next respective generation. We'll repeat this process until we work our way to and complete the sixth generation.

Now there is something that I must bring forward that you may not like. You cannot use Mega Evolutions in your banners.


I mean you can.. if you hit the proper rank!

Well, that's a funny story. See, when you submit a banner, and it's accepted into the Pokédex, you receive a shiny new point. when you reach a certain number of points, you rank up. After you hit a certain rank, you'll be allowed to use Mega Evolutions.


Mega Evolutions!

Now.. despite what I just said, there's a little more you should know. Mega Evolutions don't count for the regular Pokédex. It counts for the new Megadex. Unfortunately since there are SO FEW Mega Evolutions, each person who hits this rank, will be entitled to 2 Mega Pokémon total. Here is the List of Mega Pokémon:

Okay... This is actually a good point. It needs to be official art. Being Pokémon cards, sprites, or renders. Because it'll be a good thing to post them up on the main site. I'm totally behind this idea. Also, I feel like they should be newly made. I mean, how do you hope to test your skills if you used some old banner you did?

And, like.. Once a week on my free time, I'll post an article update. Just to appease the powers that be.

Speaking of which.. Ray asked me to see this through until the end. I will see it through until people stop posting here all together. Even if one or two people still post, I won't abandon ship, but if it's just Braixen and myself.. I can't say it'll be worth keeping around. It was spur of the moment and a total shot in the dark. With little to no preparation. But I've always been that sink-or-swim kind of guy.

This is, for one, way too big. 2, there was little to no effort, I spent, at best, 30 seconds making this. I want to see real effort. C'mon.

While this has a little more effort, I mean.. I just hope to whatever God you believe in that you never EVER consider something like this acceptable.... EVER.


In closing, taking a gander at my actual Scyther submission, it is very basic, yet clean and neat. a few gradient maps and some blur/sharpen action goes a long way. As Xanthe stated, It looks like I just cropped it out, and made it look pretty. Because that's what I did. Borders are also essential. It really helps to have them when making tags, and submitting them to this particular project..

I accept your banner. But your comments require me to give you some pointers. The text itself should not be more prominent than the image you use for the banner. They're meant as an accessory of sorts to make the picture whole. When I look at a banner, the first thing I see shouldn't be the text. Like how I'm seeing the layer over Flareon, the diamond pattern thing, It seems to sort of hide the Pokémon while it doesn't cover the text at all. Perhaps that should be the other way around? Other than that, I would say it's good. Being someone who's not entirely savvy at creating graphics and banners, you did relatively well. Kudos.

At this stage I would like to say that I will be fairly inactive for the coming week. It is the American holiday known as Thanksgiving. Following Thanksgiving is this ridiculous retail event called "Black Friday." This is where mobs of grumpy sleepless mothers and grandmothers mob the store for deals that you could literally get any other time of the year. Except for some which are actually event deals, which at that stage I can understand.

Point in case, I work full time this week, and won't have much dedication to PxR as a whole. I will leave the acceptance of Banners, New Members, and Reserves to Braixen and Suicune's Fire. Enjoy your week PxR, I know I will.

Alright, here's my first banner. Sorry if it's bad, I was just going off of Sarah's tutorial and trying out what I liked and didn't like. Regardless, it's done now, and I'll see when I can do more.

I'll say a few things. First off, it's not bad, and I'll accept it. Unless you want to work on it, again. I feel like the lettering stands out more than the Pokémon. This was my same beef with Xanthe's Flareon. On top of that, if I remember reading the tutorial correctly, you're supposed to center the brushes around the image you were working with to make the Pokémon stand out more. It's easy to get confused, though. especially when you're relatively new at making banners. I know I was terrible when I first started. But I was so full of myself that I called myself the "Hidden Talent." But that was more or less because I was a champion of the sprite art boards on pe2k. If I were to recommend anything else give the Persian render its own window/tab, size it down a bit, and rotate it a little. Make the arrows point away from Persian, then make the text smaller and less prominent. Then show me what you come up with and we'll go from there.

Also, yes, PTGigi does make some impressive banners. I'll be stoked to see what she does for the Mega Evolutions that she chooses when she reaches 25 banners. xD

wilpin7 looking at those, I can give you some feedback despite being an amateur myself:

The koffing is pretty hard to see amongst the darkness you've splashed over it. The number is also very difficult to see, although I do like the layout. It's sortof weird because right now on Alpha Sapphire, my DS is sitting on the "your pokemon was sent to the box" after catching a koffing. XD

As for the magneton, the pokemon itself also needs to stick out a little bit more, as it seems to be blending into the background too much. The stark red of the number is very distracting. One thing that XaiakuX likes to stress (and rightly so) is the fact that the number must not outshine/distract from the pokemon in the banner. Again, I like what you've done with the banner. :] I'd make the number into a light blue/green/silver or something and then make the magneton more visible.

I'll reserve psyduck, koffing and magneton for you so that you may fix the two you've posted before I add them. :]



PTGigi YOU'RE AT IT AGAIN! Those are all brilliant! Omg the ditto one. xD Perf. Thanks for the spelling errors! Fixed 'em. Can't believe I didn't notice. xD (Not that I compiled the list... I have a quick question about reserves too. Is there a time limit on reserves? Some Pokemon have been reserved for a long period of time (understandable given people's schedules) and, while it's not an issue now, when we get more Pokemon completed, most if not eventually all of the Pokemon will be reserved. I guess I'm afraid we might get into a situation where we're at a standstill because of this? I dunno.

I'm thinking that the Kabutops is a little too transparent here...so in other words, it blends in with the background a little too much. And with the paint splatters, it was actually difficult to see what the Pokemon was on my phone.

I'd say to use contrasting colors more. Maybe use a different color scheme, because Kabutops' color scheme is pretty monochromatic as is. Try to use a different color arrangement, such as complimentary So, for instance, maybe try a shade of blue? It won't be too out of place since it IS a water type.

I think the Caterpie is also pretty invisible, especially given that you used the original sprite at its original size. It'd be cool if it was a shiny Caterpie on that background, but Idk what Calebs policy is with shinies. :P

Photobucket is a poo-bum. It's made me less inclined to use it over time. -_- However, I really like the banners. :D Smaller than usual, but nice. I don't like the way the pixels on the alakazam sprite stand out though. It looks a little choppy and tacky. If you fixed them up yourself and maybe made them darker, so they weren't so out of place, I think it'd look better. :]

P.S. Using your Sta.sh on DeviantART is a really good idea. :] I use it for a lot of things nowadays which is why I'm running out of space.
