Welcome to another discussion thread here on Artist's Easel and I feel this thread is an important thread to have here to help artists realise their true potential.
How far do you think you have developed and improved your art skills/techniques since the time you have considered yourself an artist?
I feel it is important to reflect on this every now and then so you can look back and realise that you have truly got better and you can reflect on what you have improved and what you need to improve on. It gives you a boost in confidence and helps you not compare your work with others and be put down by some art which you see as better, when in reality, they may have been practising longer than you. It shows progression and that you are well on the way to the standard of some art that you aspire to be around.
I feel over the last three years, my art has got significantly better. I used to be very heavily manga/anime influenced and it really narrowed my skills and I feel I was trying to copy work and put it into mine rather than for me to develop a style. This lead to very different looking, angular, unaccurate drawings. I admit, I was not very experienced as I thought that I did not need a style as long as I drew like others.
From then, I have come to realise that staying in one artistic genre is not good, it makes you feel trapped. I have also realised that I need to draw from what I find easy and what I feel like drawing so I can express myself more, hence creating better art. I have created a style for myself, which is somewhere between cartoonist and realism, however, it exaggerates more of a cartoon feel due to my shading style. I have only very recently found a shading style that I love to do. It is fun, looks good with my style and I am developing it constantly so it isn't boring and stationary. The shading refers to when I colour it digitally of course. It uses a copic-like tool so I can blend but show contrast at the same time. It gives me the best of both worlds of shading to experiment with.
If I was to talk about traditional art, I have found my medium. I am much better at painting than any other medium. acrylics are my main focus, but I intend on using oils for a painting for my mom and I will see how it turns out.
Here is a visual representation of my development as an artist over the past three years. In 2012, I drew my OC, Kelisa. I recently redrew here and updated some things. The contrast of the two represents maybe 2-3 years of work and development of my artistic skills.

Feel free to share your artistic development and feel free to give visual aid if you wish. You don't need to if you wish not to. I look forward to seeing how some of you have improved and I'm sure I will be fascinated. It is always amazing to see other artists improve and get better and to hear their story of development. It's quite inspiring.
