[Noblejanobii]

In the ruins of a once famed laboratory, creatures of a unique kind roam without worry. They are no longer tortured, hunted, or in harms way. They know they will be protected from any sort of danger. It is here that one may see such creatures in their true forms and here that they may be observed in peace.

So, here's where my fusions and recolors are going to be. This will include all of my new and old sprites, including some of my very first sprites. On that note, please remember that not all of these will have transparent backgrounds and since the older ones were done in paint not all of them will be... well very good. Feel free to critique, praise is welcome, but please spill the haterade elsewhere.

FDAFSDKFSDJHSDFHJ I FINALLY, ACTUALLY HAVE TIME NOW

Okay, so I'm just going to try to give you general pointers based on the stuff that you have here, since I can't exactly critique one thing from the other because I'm not 100% sure what you consider old and what you consider more recent (beside the PNG-JPEG difference).

Quite a few of the recolors you have look incomplete, as in certain parts were not recolored. I also see that you're using palettes from other Pokemon; that's totally fine, but you might be limiting yourself to JUST to color ramp of the Pokemon who's colors you're using, hence why Ninetales' outline color is still light brown, for instance. I'm sure you're probably already aware but never hesitate to use the color sliders in Paint. Basing your colors off of the colors of something else is totally cool--it can be really hard to pinpoint that exact color you want--but try to deviate some from them, maybe.

Some of the others, such as that cyan-colored Flaaffy, lack efficient contrast, therefore I have to squint to see the difference in the shades. Very bright, highly-saturated colors are tougher to scale down into the darker tones because you have to make them really dark before you can actually see some contrast. Yellow and cyan are good examples of these "tricky" colors.

My suggestion? Try varying your saturation for your colors. Lower saturation means that the color contains more gray and is less vivid. For really bright colors like cyan, it helps to lower the saturation a tad as you get into the darker shades.

With fusing, copy-and-paste fusions are alright for just pixelling casually / just starting out. However, you can't just paste the appendage from one Pokemon onto the other and call it a day. A lot of the time you'll need to maybe change the line art some, and even the shading.
Vulveeon is a good example of I guess what I'm trying to get at, here. It looks like the Eeveelution tails were just haphazadly pasted onto Vulpix's rear end. There's just an Umbreon tail that's magically attached to Vulpix's thigh. I mean it would be better if the black maybe transitioned to the brown in some way, or you changed the color of the Umbreon tail, or changed Vulpix's main body color...but as of now it's like nothing is really connecting it to Vulpix, y'know?

Sorry if my explanations are a little wishy-washy. I can get...ehm, pretty bad with that. If you need me to clear something up feel free to just ask me to elaborate! c:

Yeah if there's one thing I'm not good at, it's shading. One of my friends tried to tutor me (which is actually where the flaffy came from) and I became so depressed because I couldn't do any of the revolves right that I just kind of gave up.

Zoromin was so much fun to make. I think some of my best ones come out of me just messing around. Mawleye looks great though in my opinion. I actually took its smile from Sableye's shuffle picture.

Here's my latest creation anyway! I recently discovered the gradient tool in photoshop while trying to make rainbow text. Long story short, I decided to play around with it and created a rainbow shaymin!

It's not the most professional looking but it's so adorable that I really don't care.

Also in my boredom I thought of making a pokeball shaymin! The first draft came out a bit weird and I quickly realized why. The sprite for a pokeball on bulbapedia is orange rather than red. I went ahead with it anyway after I realized the issue so here's that shaymin. Working on another one now that has proper colors.

The second one looks a lot more like a pokeball. The only criticism I can make is that its fur looks a little flat where the dots have been removed - maybe you could add some of the original orange as highlights? The tips of the spikes would probably look best c:

Oh the dots haven't been removed. They just don't stick out as much due to their color being closer to the hedge color.

Also, because I was bored, I did a rainbow axew too. Might animate it later if it isn't too difficult.

Quick question: what program are you using for GIF animations? GraphicsGale doesn't like interlaced GIFs and pretty much ****s them up when you open one in GG. And sadly, every animated BW sprite I've found is an interlaced GIF for whatever reason...probably so that it loads faster on a page.

I'm personally not a big fan of using NPA (non-pixel art) tools on pixel art, but I do like how the animated Axew's gradient remains constant and doesn't actually move with it.

As for the Shaymin recolors: the first one is honestly fine, but you've got some really weird stuff going on with the second one.

Hue-shifting is also a good technique to try out, because as of now the red Shaymin looks kinda flat. Very true that the Pokeball icon is actually more of an orange; its use of hue-shifting makes it seem more red, though. Check this out:

It looks more natural if you use more hues to portray one color. If you use the same exact hue, saturation, and everything it makes it look flat. This is especially apparent with warmer colors. In that example, the saturation goes down as well.

I'm using Photoshop CS5 for the gifs. It's the only program I know how to make gifs on.

Ah yeah I made that dark because i wanted the flower to represent like the button of the pokeball, so I gave it the same style of outline.

Introducing Sloaneon! I got the idea for this in church today and she wasn't all that hard to make.

Sloaneon is a dual Grass/Dark type who is usually pretty playful but has been known to show a darker side to things.

The main thing is readability. With all the dark blacks and low contrast, it's really hard to tell what's going on. Don't be afraid to make your colors contrast and stand out against each other more! It also looks like the outline color on the black is lighter than the rest of the body, which adds to the readability problem.

Upon changing those outlines to the darkest black in my graphics program, it's already starting to look better:

Okay that makes sense. Yeah the tail was half scratch half leafeon tail as base and I think in trying to get the veins out of the image I might have accidentally gotten rid of the outline. I'll keep the tips in mind next time though!

So the same guy who requested the Nimbreon and the Umbreleaf wanted a recolor of the Nimbeon sprite with bluish purple coloring rather than yellow.

Personally I'm a much bigger fan of the violet one than the yellow one. Both look nice, color-scheme-wise, but the violet makes it look more sleek. But that's more of a design thing and it's someone else's design so yeah!

The contrast with the black is looking a lot better. Even a small change can help a ton. But we still are having some contrast issues with the violet; I'll show you how you can fix that up.

As you can see, I really only made the shades slightly darker so that they don't look like one large cluster of a solid color. That's what usually happens when you don't have enough contrast: at first glance, everything consisting of that hue looks like it's all squished together. You want to make sure people know what they're looking at from the first glance!

Another thing I found kind of odd was how the outline of the farthest ear was outlined in a lighter color instead of a darker one. Another minor thing was that the tail still isn't shaded. Sorry if I forgot to mention that before; I have this habit of only mentioning one or two things at one time as to not overwhelm people with a crapton of different things all at once. It's a habit I probably ought to try breaking, really.

With the tail, I fixed the strange jagged lines and gave it more of a swooping curve like how it is in the artwork. Here's a really helpful tidbit about curves in pixel art from arguably one of the best pixel art introduction tutorials online, which you can find here! Jaggies:
Jaggies occur when a pixel or group of pixels are out of place, interrupting the flow of a line. Jaggies can also occur when a line lacks anti-aliasing. Jaggies get their name from the jagged lines that they create. More broadly, jaggies are the result of any bad pixel technique, but they are most often discussed in reference to line work, so that is the context in which they will be discussed here.
How to fix jaggies:

That's the most basic way to fix jaggies. Remember when you form a curve with pixels, it needs to be a gradual thing just like if you were drawing it.

Another basic diagram of how curves generally work!

Generally with curves, you want to follow a 3,2,1,2,3 or a 5,3,2,1,2,3,5; like so:

The reason the two patterns are different is because generally you'll want to end a curve with a 3, 2, 1, 2, 3 kind of curve to look smoother / rounder. Here's what the second curve would have looked like with a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

See how it looks like that white and purple flareon is an old man and has grey facial hairs? That's because you have grey (which is meant to be a dark outline colour) clashing with a much, much darker purple, which shouldn't be darker than your outline colour. Whenever you do light colours/shades, you NEED to make sure that the outlines bordering a different, darker colour are dark. You absolutely have to do this, otherwise it doesn't look good. See how the outline of the purple mane is also grey, on the right? It needs to be a dark purple outline, not a grey outline. It makes it look messy and it doesn't contrast well.

I hope you understand what I meant and that it was helpful!

The problem with that bastiodon is that for some reason, the contrast line is completely off. xD If you want it right down the middle, you have to curve it with the angle of the head. Right now, if the bastiodon was to put its head upright and straight, it would be a diagonal line across its face. Other than that, I like it. But yeah, fix that line!

Oddly enough, the onomatopoeia in the second animation actually makes it look like Shaylava is hitting it a little differently each time; like as if her paw is offset a little. Its really cool what a little misdirection can do! That animation is adorable btw xD

Yeah! It was pretty simple. I'm probably going to practice recolors some more. Though I've been trying to make sure that the colors are all the same distance apart as they were on the original color scheme. I think it helps.

It would have worked, but the issue is that the brown is a lot darker than the previous yellow, which means that it clashes with the belly colour. The belly colour's outline colour clashes with the brown and creates a "banding" effect. You can fix this by simply making the belly's outline colour darker than the brown. In other words, use the brown's outline colour for the belly outline where the belly connects with the brown. Get me? :] Try it and see if you know what I mean.

As a general rule of thumb, make sure that if you have a dark colour and a light colour next to each other, the light colour's darkest colour is DARKER than the dark colour. Otherwise, banding and clashing.

Yeah it is a bit of a hard color scheme but I was trying to stick as close to the reference I had as possible. Honestly I think there are ways it could have come out better but she loved it so that's neither here nor there.

A request from a friend to Alolaize his pokesona! I lightened the colors of the wings and tails, as well as made the coat match the fur. I think it looks great in my opinion. I wanted to keep the colors of its wings and tails vibrant, but not as much as it was, and I think I succeeded at that.

In my excitement and anticipation about getting Pokemon Sun and Moon this Christmas, I decided my pokesona needed a new look for when she went to the beach! Introducing Shaylava, Alola form!

Upon entering the beaches and warm sun of the Alola Region, Shaylava's colors changed to match the warmer environment. Her pelt has lightened to match the blue waves of the ocean, and her skin darkened to match the sand. Due to the food she consumed, Shaylava's flower now blooms to something that resembles some of the flowers that Comfey carries, and her flames bear the same colors. She retains her grass/fire typing, but now learns additional fairy moves such as dazzling gleam as well. It is suspected this is due to her taking on more of a resemblance to Comfey.

Also here's a Ninark. It's a combo of Ninetales and Dark, but also a pun on the fact that more of this consists of Zoroark than it does Ninetales. Honestly it isn't my best sprite. If you look closely you can see the Zoroark parts I used as a base. I kind of ran out of ideas and just went with this. Also little bits of Lucario as well.

So I got two more requests over the past few weeks and just got the permissions necessary to do them so while I was flying to Tampa today I did them.

The first is a purple rockruff! The sprite was recolored for PFQ user Lyupa with the PFQ Rockruff sprite with permission from Sei here: sta.sh/040yfi8twbl This was a lot of fun to recolor. I kept the colors as close to the original shadings as possible and I think it turned out really well. You can also see if you look closely that the eyes are a light green.

The second is a redo of the Alolan Vulbat. This sprite was done for PFQ user, TravesuraAmante, with permission to use PFQ's Alolan Vulpix sprite here: sta.sh/0b9snbz3hzf I decided to try something a bit different with the tail and zubat tails so I made a gradient and tried to add dark enough lines that you could slightly see the tails. Not so much luck looking at it now but it wasn't all bad.

So a long time ago when I was still debating on what my pokesona would be, I had a more experienced spriter make a pokesona for me that was a fusion of Lampent, Shaymin, and Vanilite. The sprite has been lost to time but I did have one picture of it that I discovered while purging my deviantart. So I decided to redo it based on that picture. This is the result:

I think this turned out quite well. I remember for a fact that the original sprite mainly depended on Lampent's color scheme but I thought it would look prettier with Vanilite's color scheme. The eyes have also been changed to the color of shaymin's hedge.

I actually tried both of those and did not like the outcome. I added the ears also and it all just looked too unnatural. I can fix the spray pixel. There are multiple instances. They have the tails, color schemes, and electric cheeks.

Remember this series of requests? Yeah me neither. This is part of the final set. I'll hopefully be doing the Pikachu one soon. You're probably wondering why this looks somewhat different from the previous ones. Well the requester asked if I could make it "look like Zapdos". This was the best I could do. Problem with working with pixel art is that transformations blur the crap out of the images so I did the best I could. That's also why the back wing looks a bit wonky. I worked for HOURS trying to get it to work before just finally giving up and doing what I did. Maybe I'll redo it in the future, who knows.

And the final request! I honestly like this one better than it's evolution. I was inspired by the Thunderbird from Native American mythos, which Zapdos is based on. That really worked given the requester asked if I could make this look similar to Zapdos. Hopefully I succeeded.

This was a fun redo of a sprite I did a long time ago. It's a Chikorita Oshawott fusion. I originally was going to replace Chikorita's tail with Oshawott's but they look like flippers so I opted for that instead. It can be kind of hard to see so I might draw this little guy later for you guys to get a proper view of it.

Cyndamin, the preevolution of my pokesona, in high res sprite form! It's about time I gave another one of my original sprites a revamp. And yes the name is meant to sound like cinnamon.

This was a lot of fun to do. I kept the original color schemes for both of these. I sprite too remember? Been a while since I uploaded one though. I had a request to do a three way fusion so I thought I'd give it a shot with a rapidash fusion I had been bouncing around in my head for a while. This ended up being technically a four way fusion but it still looks awesome.

The base model in Rapidash with the color scheme being Zebstrika's. The horn, spikes, and tail are all those of Zebstrika. The wings are from Pidgeotto and the little wispy clouds are from Entei's back. All in all I think this turned out quite well. I was debating adding stripes but I don't think they'd work well.

Mostly just moving parts around but I did add a bit of overlays for texture on the shell that you can see if you look closely. Overall I think it turned out quite well for a warmup sprite. Alright so, in order to practice spriting and drawing, Peaches and I decided to draw/sprite some fusions of our soullinkfitlocke mons. So here are some of the finished products! It's a mix of both. I used the persian body sprite as a base and used liepard's tail, roserade's eyes, and one of staravia's tail feathers. But the ears and whiskers were completely scratched.

I can see you have done that, but the change is so minimal you can hardly tell. Also, for the shiny colours, the lineart of the body is lighter than the lineart of the pink on the differently coloured features. This results in a banding-type look and stands out in a negative way. An easy fix is to just adjust the darkness of the lines.

I think they would also benefit from harder shading tones, as the difference is barely visible. It makes for difficult readability. Anti-aliasing also really helps to make larger pixel art pieces not seem so jagged. Additionally, this is your colour pallet:

Ah, good that you're aiming for minimal colours. But see that colour table I put? Aalllll those colours are present in those two images. This happens when you miss recolouring some pixels sometimes. As a result, there are 47 different colours in those images, as shown by the table.

Anti-aliasing can definitely make it look blurry, but right now it's really sharp and a bit of anti-aliasing makes it look better. I don't know if you've ever seen Speed's guide right here, but she goes over anti-aliasing and the dos and don'ts (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?3044-The-PxR-Spriting-Encyclopedia). In post 4, she talks about it for a bit. Too much looks bad, but just enough makes the sprite far easier on the eye and is just kind of good practice.

Basically, whenever I want to learn how to do something better, I use Speed's stuff as a reference (even if I'm nowhere near her skill level haha).

But yeah aside from anti-aliasing, the other thing I'd suggest is higher contrast. It's hard to see the shading as it is now, and also makes for a flat image when the contrast is low.

If you actually go back and look at the previous batch of scratch sprites I did I actually did anti-alias with those and I just forgot to this time around. I'll definitely go back and update them later as well as check for the colors. Image > Mode > Indexed Color (it'll ask you if you want to to force black, white, and transparent. Don't force black and white because it's pointless haha). Then once it's indexed, go to Image > Mode > Color Table and it shows up. If you hit the eyedropper tool (the one in the colour table) then select each colour square, it'll show you where that colour is used in the picture/sprite.

If you hit the eyedropper tool (the one in the colour table) then select each colour square, it'll show you where that colour is used in the picture/sprite.

Okay I updated these guys to have anti-aliasing and updated the colors to reduce the odd out pixels! Suicune's Fire is this any better?

I think it's even harder to see the shading now. xD The contrast is waaaay too low. You need a much more definition between shades. That darker shade needs to be far, far darker.

I couldn't actually tell where the anti-aliasing was because again the shades are just too similar. However I could tell that it was fuzzy and zoomed in and, well, anti-aliasing should be done sparingly, otherwise you have that fuzz effect. It's meant to soften edges and make it less pixelly but now it's hugging the entire lineart. You've got a lot of banding going on as well, which is when the shading doubles up with the lineart.

Also...the two bunnies together now have 80 colours in the palette . o__o By the way, it would be much easier to just work with the first one and get it finished before worrying about the shiny variant. Then you can just go into the colour palette and change each colour individually to make the shiny once the original is done. :) So you don't have to recolour it manually.

As a result, I'm probably going to just abandon this sprite since any alterations I make at this point will look too similar to yours and I won't feel like they're original in thought or design. I know you had good intentions, and I appreciate that, so I don't want you to feel like this is your fault since you didn't know. I should've stopped you this morning but I didn't want your efforts to go to waste. However, because it feels like I'm just going to be copying you at this point, I'm just going to abandon this design.

Yep all the commission sprites were completely from scratch just based off of refs I got from the commissioners. Bassui turned out great. He and Grey are probably my favorites out of the group based on how they turned out.
