.:WELCOME:.
http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/uu222/SirX-kun/Graphics/Breaker.png
This is the Graphic Arts Competition of WAR II. It is also the first stand-alone Graphic Arts contest that PxR has had in a WAR competition. I am XaiakuX, and I am both proud and excited to Host and Judge this particular contest. Finally the WAR Leaders did something right! [-BaDumTss-]
Only members of an OFFICIAL TEAM (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?6416-WAR-Season-II-Team-Applications) may participate for judging and scoring for their teams. If you haven't joined a team yet, just click HERE (http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?55-Groups-and-Clubs) to pick one, and join up! On the flip side, ANYONE may still participate. If you aren't a part of a WAR team, and just want to participate for fun, you're absolutely welcome to. You just won't get any points at the end of the week.
http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/uu222/SirX-kun/Graphics/Breaker.png
In this contest, you will need some form of art program such as Photoshop or GIMP. These are examples, of course. If you feel more comfortable using MS Paint or another program, feel free! So long as the end result is the same. Moving on to what you'll be creating in these programs. That's actually a surprise, but I'll give you some examples. Anything from a Text Edit, to a Tag for a Signature, an Animation, or a Banner and Avatar Set for Forum use.
If you've never created a banner before, and need some help just click HERE (http://www.deviantart.com/browse/all/?q=signature+tutorial) to follow some tutorials in banner creation.
Speaking of Animation. Even if it isn't the Theme of the Week, you're still welcome to use it in your project. It may even gain you bonus points if I like it well enough. This goes for any style or format you chose to go with. Again, as long as the end result is the same. Feel free to create your project in any way you want, so long as it fits the Theme of the Week.
http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/uu222/SirX-kun/Graphics/Breaker.png
As for Judging, I plan to be as fair and honest with anyone new as well as anyone experienced. I'll do so because I really want to get people into Graphic Arts the same way I am. I started doing banners when I was 16, and I've been having a blast ever since. Sure they were just awful at the time, but I got better, and developed new styles and techniques. Eventually, I started teaching other people my styles and techniques.
The very best Graphic Artist that week will be rewarded 3 points for their team.
The runner up Graphic Artist that week will be rewarded 2 points for their team.
One other Graphic Artist at random that week will be rewarded 1 point for their team.
To join up, just go ahead a post your graphic arts submission, with your team name somewhere in your post.
How will I judge you? Like this:
Text: /5 (Text and text placement is crucial, if you can't come up with something, it's perfectly acceptable not to add text.)
Imagery: /5 (When using images, I request that you use official art, or your own art, unless permitted otherwise by the artist.)
Colors: /10 (Color matters in art, if you create a design and the colors don't go well together, it could hurt you)
Flow: /10 (To avoid messy and unnecessary slip ups, it's good to to keep an image going in one direction)
Style: /15 (One of Two all around sort of judgements, you will be judged based on your general style and technique)
Balance: /15 (Two of Two all around sort of judgements, you will be judged based on the general balance of your image.)
Overall: /60 (This is to be your final score after judging everything else listed above.)
http://i650.photobucket.com/albums/uu222/SirX-kun/Graphics/Breaker.png
Seems intimidating, doesn't it? Don't let it get to you. The judging part of this is to guide you and help you get better. If you're new to this, and you flop the first couple of times, don't sweat it! Your team still gets a point thanks to you, and my judge reviews will always give you tips and guidelines to improve.
Now, get ready to to make a banner... or something!
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

This week's theme is:
TEAM BUILDING!
Now, let's start off with something basic. I want you to create a banner for your team! This banner should possess three key things:
Your Team's name.
Your Team's colors.
Your Team's slogan.
If your team doesn't have a color scheme or slogan, feel free to create your own.
For example. Team Awesome's color scheme is Red and Black, and the slogan is "Then.. Now.. Forever!"
There are otherwise no restrictions. Remember this week is easy and basic on purpose. This is so that new players can get comfortable. I'm no cruiserweight, though. So expect things to get a little more complex as the weeks go on. This will be to both test your developing skills, and to give the more seasoned graphic artists something a little more challenging.
Enjoy, and remember to have fun!

I'll be first and post my submission for the team building event!
I went with a pretty simple geometric idea with a popart vibe. The animation used in this is a few frames from this gif, which I found pretty relevant: x (https://38.media.tumblr.com/4dd032172048356f1a04cc4d6853d73b/tumblr_n5d3wmIahf1s4wbdoo1_500.gif)

Team: The Prism League
Colours: Rainbow
Slogan: No official slogan, but I went with "Restorers of Light" based on Nekomata's intro post--

I chose Mega Charizard X and the story from Pokemon Chronicles because I feel that it really shows what it is to be a trainer :D

XaiakuX;
You didn't post a submission deadline. :/ I probably should've mentioned this sooner, but I literally just noticed a few hours ago and assumed I miiiiiiiiight finish tonight and be able to submit before I went out. When do we have to have submissions in by? I'm going to try and finish before I go to bed tonight (since I'm going to come back to my computer anyways when I get home), but I have no idea when the deadline is to begin with. I realize it's my fault for waiting until the last minute, so if I don't make the deadline, I don't expect you to wait for me, I just want to know when it is to begin with.
also obligatory comment about how the letters in that WAR Graphic Art banner at the top of the page don't actually say WAR, it's more like "shshdya" because yay Cyrillic alphabet, but i totally get it's a stylistic thing; the Russian student in me just had to comment on it
I'll edit my entry into this post once I finish assuming no one else has posted by then, and if I miss this unknown deadline, then so be it.

Felly Unless other wise stated, the deadline for all WAR events is 11.59pm EST Friday. You may also submit things on Saturday up until the judge states entries are closed or judging begins. No entries may be submitted after 11.59pm EST Saturday unless the judge has previously said so. Hope that helps! You still have time! :)

06-13-2015, 04:22 AM
That does help, yeah, but I feel like a specific ending time should be posted anyways. @_@ I'm posting this approximately 15 minutes, give or take, past that 11:59pm EST deadline, and I'm not really sure if Xaiaku intended for it to be over at 11:59pm EST but he forgot to post it or if he's just going to post when entries are closed today/on Saturday. I don't really want to have to assume an event ends at the blanket time of 11:59pm EST, I'd rather it just be posted up front, but that's just me. He might've just forgot though, and that's fine; hopefully it can be resolved for next week so I don't have to worry about when the actual deadline is/whether or not my entry may be accepted! :3
All of that said, I did finish my submission, so here goes~ Probably don't stand a chance against all of these other wonderful entries, but I'mma give it a shot anyways!
Team: Yoga Bears
Colors: Mainly green and brown, but there's some blues and honey yellow in there too.
Slogan: "Gettin' All the Honeys"

I had no intention of doing graphic art, but then this happened. I wasn't sure I was even gonna post it, but I figured wth.

Keeping it simple, cuz I like simple. Still not sure I like the colors.

Colors: None, officially, but red, blue, and green seem to feature in a lot of our stuff, so I used that.

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to override XaiakuX as judge, as we're almost into Tuesday and the next theme badly needs to go up (not to mention this is holding up the Week #1 overall scorekeeping).
GRAPHIC ART WEEK #1 RESULTS!
I don't really have the time to grade art entries based on XaiakuX's rubric, so I'll try to leave a short but sweet review for each piece. I know you guys worked hard on your stuff and I wish I could go into more detail like I did with Creative Writing (and this is why I do my judging on a weekend!), but I'll do my best just keeping it simple with a rating of 1-100.
Hope you guys understand. :)
lorri - The Prism League, Restorers of Light
This is definitely a neat, very eye-catching banner and the animation is simple, but neat, smooth, and fits the banner just right. I also like the cityscape-like background and the white, neon-like text is a great fit as well. It's simple and to the point, but in a great way and doesn't go too over-the-top with unnecessary flair or gimmicks. The text and title stand out and it definitely does a great job. I think one extra layer of effects, such as maybe a sun behind the central pyramid, clouds in the background, or stars (something along those lines) would have really given it an extra bit of spark, but it's great on its own.
92/100
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sou Cleife - Team Trainer - For courage, honor, and Glory!
Definitely a neat, animated banner by a true Pokémon fan. :D
I like the unique shape of the banner, and the way you incorporated the GIF animation into the Poké Ball off to the side. I think it bit more variance in the color would have been need to see (maybe more of a transition from pink to purple would help it stand out some more, but overall, it's definitely neat and well-designed. I also think the animation would have been better off in the center, since it's definitely the most eye-catching feature on the banner itself. But overall, it's a nice piece of art!
85/100
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pokémon Trainer Sarah - Team Trainer - Honour, courage, glory
You bring out the best in Mega Charizard X. And I'm sure it takes a REALLY good trainer to handle a beasty like him, so you picked a good one! XD
I like this banner for the fact that it takes a big step away from the rectangular shape and instead, the Mega Charizard really stands out, but the background effects like the arrows, spikes, and the squares in their varying shades of red, black, and blue actually bring out the Mega Charizard X even more. Plus, I really like the way you incorporated the background Poké Ball and the way you used the text.
The only teeny change I'd suggest is maybe doing something a bit more with the "Team Trainer" text to make it stand out. I think just a little more bang and sparkle with it would have really made it even more epic, but overall, you did a great job with that banner. :D
95/100
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Felly - Team Yoga Bears - Gettin' All the Honeys
You sure love your bears. XD
The claw print is a cool idea and I like the slogan, but I think a little bit more could have been done with the images and the text to make them stand out. I'd even suggest maybe going with a nice white font that stands out a bit more (like on your current signature) as opposed to a dark yellow on a green background, which doesn't make it as easy to read.
To make the banner even better, I'd suggest going beyond the diagonal black line overlay and incorporate more effects and dynamics to make the banner more of your own creation rather than relying too much on the images. Try some experimentation and don't be afraid to try new things to see what works and helps it stand out more. :)
72/100
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
sammy0295 - Team Trainer - Honor, Courage, Glory
I love how Team Trainer likes to go old school when it comes to Pokémon artwork. XD
I like how you made the banner take on a unique shape and how you linked the manga artwork with the colored rod-like shapes. It keeps it simple and to the point. I think maybe a little adjustment could have been done to make it brighter and stand out a bit more.
Also, some of the text is a bit hard to read, especially the word "Glory." The name "Team Trainer" is also not too easy to read either. Maybe going with white for "Honor," "Courage," and "Glory" would help those words stand out a bit more, and some kind of gradient or patterned effect for "Team Trainer" would have helped it stand out a bit more and be more eye-catching.
76/100
WINNERS:
3 Points - Pokémon Trainer Sarah (Team Trainer)
2 Points - lorii (The Prism League)
1 Point - Sou Cleife (Team Trainer)
GRAPHIC ART WEEK #2
For this week, we're going with... Legendary Pokémon!
Pick a legendary (just one) and make the best banner you can for them that really captures their essence and character. On the banner itself, it should have:
An image of the Legendary Pokémon.
The Legendary's name, in text.
And some kind of phrase, statement, or slogan that you feel best captures them.
Other than that, go all out and good luck!

My entry this week is inspired by the song "Wrapped Up in Light" from Pokemon 4 Ever. You can listen to it here if interested. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRecrRjgCl4) :) It plays in the movie after Celebi dies and all of the Celebi come from different times to save it. ;_; It's also the moment shown in the gif used, which is here: http://giphy.com/gifs/pokemon-pkmn-dtcfmpLFssvew Also vertical banner because I've never done one before and WAR is the time to try new things! :D I apologise that I couldn't save it as transparent - Photoshop can't save transparent gifs without making a huge mess of everything for some reason. :(

Since it's practically midnight. Imma close up shop for this week and get to grading. Thanks for your entries, all! It's gonna be a real tough call, this week.
New week's theme!
Vintage Bulbasaur!
This week I want you to create a poster. A huge-ish poster. To the point where I'll need to click a link to view it, but no larger than 16w x 20h in. This will allow me to see the amount of detail you put into your artwork, and grade it accordingly.
Prerequisites:
- Can only have Bulbasaur as the feature image.
- Must fit a vintage theme.
- Cannot be animated.
Also! To make up for my late grading, I will attempt to get a print of the winning poster to the winner. o:
Said results will be up tomorrow morning. Just need a wee nap from working. XD

Week 2 Results!
Did you guys draw some of these images? That's some impressive stuff. Otherwise, wou guys are using official art, right? If you answered no to either of those questions, I'll let it slide this week, but I'm going to start including a spot in the application for a link to the original art used. xD
Also, on a side not, I want you all to know that my judging is based on experiences that I've had with this particular field of art. What I've seen, done, and have seen other people do. I've spent my time around experts and and learned from them, as well as on my own. I'm hardly an expert, but I have an eye for detail. The calls that I make I feel will be the right ones. Thanks for reading.

Your banner looks like something straight out of a comic book, and your style is something I've come to expect since I've seen your artwork in a variety of projects including my 721 Project. I also have a fond appreciation for your use of MEWTWO RETURNS quotes and imagery. My only beef is that I feel like your playing it a little safe. If that makes sense. I know you have the capacity to blow the competition out of the water. I enjoyed your banner. Now I want to see bigger and better than ever!

I didn't see the name of the Pokémon in your banner, so I had to take points off for that. The text itself blended in to the point where I had to draw focus to see it. Next up, since I'm not exactly familiar with your talents and skills it was difficult to make a sound judgement on most of the fields, so don't take the low score entirely to heart, as it was my fault for not knowing anything about the image source. However, I did notice the light source. In fact for a few seconds it's all I could look at. I feel like, if it were either more transparent, or otherwise nonexistent it would have been better.

Your banners have always been rather big and flashy. Something I don't think suits a Pokémon like Latias. Latias tends to be gentle and docile, and doesn't really fit into the relatively extreme style of your bannners. That said, I've come to enjoy, respect, and even draw a little inspiration from your style from time to time. On the flip side, I feel like your banners, after a while, begin to show a heavy amount of repetition. This can hurt a score from a judge looking for a pop or a wow factor from a known artist. After getting by with the same style, I feel it's good to come out of the cage with something entirely new. Maybe I'll see that in the next contest.

I swear this was done just because of my love of Mew! This is actually a favorite of mine. Despite it being bring, and a looking little basic as a whole, I feel that's how Mew is. Unlike a very similar Latias in an extreme, intense, and edgy sort of banner. The banner itself has a good balance and flow to it. Nothing is really standalone, and nothing seems out of place. Kudos to you.

Feck Yeh Serebii. This is just glorious. I didn't even pay attention to the animation upon initial inspection. The animation, however, was a nice touch and added a wholeness to the banner which helped your score a bit. I have seen your work, and it's all kinda got that soothing starry feel with a bit of edge to tell everyone you've still got a rebel in you. But this one is different, it honestly just tells me it's a banner about Celebi. That's all it actually needs, and other than the difficult to read text and it all being a little bright, I absolutely love it.

Okay, so. Hi, my name is XaiakuX and I'm kind of a jerk. But today, I'm going to be real with you, and kinda try to help you out. Okay, so. The text, albeit cool in font (and would enjoy seeing running down the side of my Corvette), is very plain, and apart from its bright color, is hardly noticeable. If you'd like, I can link you to some neat text editing tricks to make your next banner really pop (or just send Neo Emolga a message, he appears to be an expert). My next thing is the little squiggle next to the Entei on the left. If you're going to use pen tool, try to give it more significance than just a squiggle in the background. I approve of your capacity to jump outside the lines to give it a 3d effect. I don't approve of the lack of a border. A banner type like yours should have some sort of border more for effect than style. My final pick will be the effect you used to to sort of hide the right side Entei. This Entei has more prominent lines and colors than the 3rd movie render to the left. Therefore you'll need to put more effort it making the 3rd movie Entei more prominent. if you need any help doing any of this, I can gladly link you to tutorials, or just PM me the program you're using, and I'll be glad to tell you a few tips, myself.

It seems we have a draw. THEREFORE I will award 3 points to the tie players Pokemon Trainer Sarah and Lorii
I will also grant 2 points to the runner up Sou Cleife.
This will mean I've given out 8 points.
Better than like.. 13.. right? xD
Ohhh, grats to everyone! :> XaiakuX~ Mew was actually and is still is in my top five favorite pokemon. It was the top of the charts for me for the longest but then Sylveon came around and made it difficult lol.
Being Mew was so simple, I did decide to keep it a bit simple. Originally I had planned on having the large bubble along with 3 bubbles placed evenly on each side with an animation in some of them but then decided that would probably be too complex haha. But perhaps, maybe I should have done that rather then dialing it back xD

Sorry to say, we can't make XaiakuX's judging results official until he changes the number of points awarded for the week back to 6. Every WAR section can only award 6 points a week, and he's got to follow the same formula.

Thats fine, to be honest, I figured it was possible they'd be omitted because it was over 6 points anyway. I was more curious how i could have improved it. To go for something more complex or simple really made me unsure :> This is more of a learning process for me since well...I had a bad time when I tried taking a graphics design degree and switched it because of bad critiques.

2 for Sarah & lorii
1.5 for Sou
0.5 for PTGigi?
I'm thinking this would be the most logical and reasonable way to go with it, but I'll give it a little while for XaiakuX to confirm it. If he doesn't show up for a while, I think we'll have to go with this in the interest of time and getting Week #2's results up.
Apparently, I need to change my style and make a cute banner for Latias next time. :x
In any case, it's different strokes for different folks, and one judge might have scored things differently or on a different basis than another one. I have to admit though, the shiny bubble effect you had on that Mew banner was pretty spiffy. :D

Holy crap, how did I miss that we had to have the name of the Pokemon in the sig? (that would have improved the balance so much ._.) Well, I sure failed this week xD
You sounded a little curious, so this is what the original image was: (official artwork) (http://archives.bulbagarden.net/media/upload/5/56/Lugia_HeartGold_SoulSilver_TCG_artwork.jpg)
I prolly did go overboard (hehe, get it? cuz underwater? *shot*) with the lighting, but I felt kinda meh about my entry anyway xD
Man, I've never made an actual poster before. Hrm '~'

Okay so uh hi so I can't get into great detail as I am on my phone and tiny keyboard and thumbs because my laptop died soooooo I'm gonna summarize my thoughts as best I can here:
I'm giving Neo Emolga first place and the 3 points! I liked the overlay and it just killed me with the five cents. I think that really added the vintage for me, made me think of those days way back when, it was good. I didn't feel my eyes wandering away from the main point of the image or to anywhere that was an empty space. This is a poster that I would want.
I'm giving second place to Pokemon Trainer Sarah for the rather motivational propaganda war posters from way back when, or whatever you call them. It was nice and simple, though I had a tiny bit of a hard time with the colours contrasting, but that could have just been me. I can imagine these in the PXR Admin room, all over the wall.
Third place goes to @ Sou Cliefe and one point to them. I liked yours a lot, and the bit with the varying quantities of Bulbasaurs was a nice tough, though I kept gravitating to that empty space on the left and I think the text could have been a touch bigger. Other than that, it was a close tie between you and Sarah.
sorry these aren't super detailed with points and what not, but those are my thoughts and scores! Neo if you can link this in the scoreboard for me, that would be great. Sorry to ask again DX
So this next weeks theme is a little different: ITS SUPER EFFECTIVE
Yes that's the theme. You can make any kind of graphic you like, banner, avatar etc. You are free to use what you like, make it serious, funny, work with Pokemons biggest trope. The only rule is that it has to be Pokemon related or contain a Pokemon in it or something Pokemon related. This may seem a bit vague but that may add some challenge for you all. I just realized I repeated myself but I'm on a phone and am not going back to erase it. Also having the text of the theme in the banner is encouraged but not required.

So something quick again, because I've got oil and cotton jammed in my ear and I need to get it checked out:
I'm gonna five first place to Neo Emolga, for his fine use if gifs and something that was plain, sweet, to the point and just plain enjoyable. If I don't see that being used in other places, I will be disappoint. Use it loud and use it proud dude! My only miff is that it's a tad tall but that's just a minor personal preference.
Second place is going to Pokemon Trainer Sarah for, another simple little poster like graphic, as it was entirely adorable, and brought me back to my Gen 2 days. That was also the generation I stopped sucking at Pokemon. I think you could have made the center piece a bit bigger though and trimmed down the amount of white, but I do like all the other little type symbols on there as well.
And third place goes to Sou Cleife for that nice little animated banner! I liked the layout a bit, though the tiny grammar flaws bug me just a tad. Need dem apostrophes for my inner RPer. XD Also the edge on the left side... feels rather cut down, I'm not sure what was goin' on with that side in comparison to the rest of your borders, which looked very nice. Maybe it's the PXR Skin I'm using, I dunno. O_O
There you have it!
@Saraibre Ryu~ Odd, I cant say I know what you're talking about...mmm. does this look better?
Just out of curiosity lol

I've noticed that when trying to save gifs with transparency in photoshop, it makes the transparent part really messy. :( I haven't been able to find a solution which is annoying. I guess it's just the limitations of the file types.
On a dark background, the version you just posted looks cleaner, yes! :)
