He must be around here somewhere, thought a pikachu as he dashed around the corner of a small wooden barn. Night had fallen hours ago, but the pikachu didn’t care. He was having fun! The searching only by moonlight only made things more interesting. Glancing around, he looked for his quarry. There were a few short logs and small bucket, but the area seemed empty otherwise. Perhaps inside the barn.
The pikachu pushed open a small door and stepped into complete darkness. He created a few quick sparks to briefly illuminate his surroundings. As with the yard outside, the barn appeared to be vacant. A thin layer of straw covered the ground inside. Suddenly it hit him—the bucket! That must be it! Crouching low, he quietly crept up to the bucket outside the barn.
“PI PIKA!” he shouted suddenly. As the pikachu predicted, a vaporeon lept out of the bucket, spraying water all around.
“Was that really necessary?” demanded the frazzled vaporeon. “Oh, whatever. I’ll get you back for it later. Your turn to hide! One, two, three…”
Chuckling, the pikachu hurried off to find a good hiding spot. But where to hide? A vaporeon couldn’t make any light, so the darker the hiding place, the better. Soon he came to a cobblestone street and followed it to the left. There were many streets in this place. Master kept calling it “Chicago,” whatever that meant. Being in a city, fortunately, provided lots of opportunities for good hiding spots.
As he ran, the pikachu noticed hole near the ground in the one of the older wooden buildings. That would be perfect! He dove into the hole and peeked out. With any luck, he would see the vaporeon before he himself was spotted. As he waited, his mind wandered. He had met the eeveelution several months before, when his owners first moved to the city. Until then, he had lived on a farm, with only a few miltanks to keep him company. Finding a friend to spend time with made this new home much more of a home than the farm had ever been.
After a while, the pikachu noticed a glow back toward where the barn was. It shouldn’t have taken the vaporeon this long to find him. Where is he? At last he could stand it no longer. Hopping through the hole, he ran back toward the barn. Perhaps his friend had given up and had gone inside. The light could be from an open door. He rounded another corner. At last he saw the light, but it definitely wasn’t what he had expected. The barn was on fire and it wouldn’t be long before it spread to other buildings.
“Vaporeon! Where are you?” the pikachu cried out desperately. The only response he heard, however, was the crackling of flames.
But what could he do? Water types would probably be best for fighting the fire, but someone would have to find them. Perhaps if he woke a human, the human might be able to get help. He bounded up to one of the newer houses.
“Pi! Chuuu pikachu! Pi pi pika!” he shouted into a low window. After several attempts, he finally heard footsteps. A woman with long red hair stuck her head out the door. Her eyes widened quickly and she shouted to someone else in the house. She dashed out, leading a squirtle toward the blaze. By now several buildings were on fire. A young boy also ran from the house, banging on doors and yelling to wake others.
The pikachu sat down, feeling helpless. Electricity wouldn’t help fight a fire; in fact, he could have easily have started it in the first place. There was nothing more he could do but wait.
Before long, a blastoise and a floatzel, joined the growing number of water pokemon dowsing the flames. Thank goodness for water pokemon. These humans would be in big trouble if they had to fight the fire on their own. But the vaporeon should be here helping too. Where was he?
At last the flames were out. Pokemon and humans alike began trudging home away from the now-soggy scene. The pikachu, however, didn’t move at all; his friend was still gone.
“EON!” came a sudden shout from behind the pikachu, who jumped impressively high.
“There,” said the vaporeon, stepping out of the shadows, grinning. “Now we’re even.”
