Anna Johnson stroked her Eevee. Her husband was out in the fields, working. The moon hung hung low in the sky, and the stars gleamed like priceless jewels.
The atmosphere was content as the small Pokemon purred, and the middle aged woman leaned back into her chair, smiling. All was well.
The Eevee had been around for quite a while now, and Anna was expecting him to evolve soon. The Eevee blinked open an eye. He yawned, and shifted slightly before falling back asleep again.
A lazy hour passed and Anna husband returned home, settling down in a seat near his wife and pet. The married couple began talking casually about how the Miltank was expecting another calf, a Kadabra took another Combusken in the night, and they were expecting a fine harvest of berries that fall, when a soft light began to surround the Eevee.
Anna and her husband stared in awe as the the Eevee’s ears, legs, and tail lengthened. His mane shrunk away, and his fur darkened.
The newly evolved Umbreon opened his dark red eyes, and smiled at his owners, unaware of the tension rapidly building.
Mr. Johnson stood up. “Get the minister. This house has come under the influence of Yveltal, Darkrai, and Giratina, and it is shown by the corruption of that Pokemon.”
Anna frowned at her husband. “Adam? What is the matter? He is still the same Eevee we hatched together from an egg. His heart has not changed.”
“Anna, it is more than a simple darkening of fur on the outside!” Mr. Johnson cried. “The evolution, it has corrupted his heart with evil. You are aware, many men and women in Salem have been revealed to be in league with the Unholy Legendaries, those three shunned by our lord Arceus. In its evolution, that creature has revealed its true colors.”
“You know that is not true, do not be absurd!” Anna said, shocked. “Umbreon has remained with us all his life. We are a good, Christian family. How can any of this family, be they man or Pokemon, have strayed from the path of faith while the rest stand firm upon it?”
“Humans have fallen to the lies and temptations offered by the Dark Legendaries in Salem,” Mr. Johnson repeated. “And the Bible has taught us that humans were given dominion over Pokemon. Pokemon are less than human, would they not be the first to fall? Umbreon’s heart is corrupted by darkness, it made a deal with Yveltal, Darkrai, and Giratina in exchange for its new powers. The Eevee you believed you loved never was. Can you not see?”
Anna frowned. “But… He is the same Eevee, even if he is an Umbreon… I know it.”
“Bree?” Umbreon asked, confused at why his two owners were fighting. Anna quickly stroked along the Dark type’s spine, feeling its silky fur.
Mr. Johnson scowled. “Fine. I can see that you still feel some attachment for that… Beast. If it is not gone from my sight by tomorrow afternoon, I shall throw it to the Herdier.”
Mr. Johnson stomped up the stairs, to the bedroom. Anna looked at Umbreon, worried for the little Pokemon.

“Bla-zi-keeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!” A Blaziken crowed, signalling the start of a new day.
Mr. Johnson woke up and got ready for the new day. He began loading goods into a cart, and hooked up a Tauros to that cart. Once his farmhand, Stephen, arrived, he told Stephen that he would be heading the the market to sell his goods. Stephen affirmed his understanding, and began taking care of the farm while the Tauros began pulling Mr. Johnson, and his cart, away.
Stephen turned to his Pokemon, and gave them their instructions. His Wartortle used Rain Dance to water the berries, while his Dodrio used Peck to kill any Bug types inside them. He let out Mr. Johnson’s Herdier, and drove Mr. Johnson’s Miltank into the pasture for them to graze while the Herdier guarded them. He told his Ambipom to go into the Combusken coop, and collect any eggs from inside there while he milked the Miltank.
When Stephen had finished the chores around the farm with the help of his and Mr. Johnson’s Pokemon, he rested inside the house, as he and Mrs. Johnson shared lunch. Nearby, his Ambipom and Wartortle ate berries. His Dodrio sleeped in the corner, full from the hungry Bug types it had eaten.
As Stephen watched his Pokemon, a timid looking Umbreon slunk out from the corner, stepping hesitantly towards the food, staying close to the wall. Its red eyes fixed on Stephen, and it seemed to shrink away from him.
Stephen stared at the Umbreon, incredulously. “What is that creature doing inside the house?”
Mrs. Johnson sighed. “Our Eevee, he evolved into Umbreon last night. My husband believes that this is because he had been corrupted by the Unholy Legendary Pokemon, but I know in my heart that he is the same Eevee as he always was…”
“You believe that it was always evil? Then why did you care for him, instead of casting it out?”
Mrs. Johnson frowned at Stephen. “I do not believe he was corrupted at all. Yes, now he looks darker, but I do not believe his outside appearance has influenced his heart.”
“Arceus believed Giratina to be good, until the Unholy Ones betrayed Him, and He cast them into the Distortion World,” Stephen spoke.
“Umbreon has betrayed neither me, nor Adam,” Mrs. Johnson said, softly. Umbreon hovered near the woman’s chair, and she stroked him softly, tenderly. “I do not believe his heart has changed. He still loves us, and will defend us no matter the cost.”
Stephen looked down at the Umbreon. Yes, its behavior did seem unchanged from the Eevee he remembered. But he had been taught from his youth that Darkrai’s evil can disguise itself easily. Only a pure and righteous heart can differentiate between Darkrai’s lies and Lord Arceus’ truths.

While on the road home, Adam Johnson and Stephen exchanged greetings. Adam was returning home with a cart full of food for his Pokefarm instead of products to sell, while Stephen was sitting astride his Dodrio, with his Wartortle perched upon his head and Ambipom clinging to his back.
When Adam returned to the farm, he found the Miltank back in their pen, the Combusken and Blaziken asleep in their coop, and the Herdier eagerly greeting him.
He unhitched the Tauros from the cart and returned it to its pen, before placing the Pokemon food in storage. He tossed the Herdier some Tepig meat as a treat, and returned inside.
He and Mrs. Johnson said grace, and ate dinner.
Then Adam searched around the house for Umbreon. He could not find it.
He smiled at his wife, and put a hand on her shoulder. “I am glad that you came to your senses, and cast out the beast. I am happy that you saw the light.”

Umbreon had been confused.
He didn’t know why his Master had treated him so differently when he had evolved. He didn’t know why his Mistress had placed him in the forest outside of the house, telling him that for his safety he should not return.
The next day he used his sense of smell to guide him back to the farm. He burst through the bushes just as the the Blaziken crowed, like it did every morning. He saw the Master send the Miltank and Tauros out to graze in the fields, and the Herdier to guard them. The Master’s assistant arrived in the farm, and sent his Wartortle and Dodrio to care for the berry crop, while his Ambipom went to collect the Combusken’s eggs. The Miltanks were milked, and Umbreon continued to linger on the edge of the farm.
He wanted to return, but he was unsure why he had been treated so strangely.
Soon, however, a breeze kicked up, and smelling his scent, one of the Herdier wandered over to him.
“Umbreon?”
Umbreon jumped, noticing the Herdier. “Herdier!”
“Umbreon, why have you returned?” Herdier growled.
Umbreon tilted his head in confusion. “What do you mean, Herdier? This is my home. I will always return to my home.”
“Not anymore,” Herdier corrected. “Pokemon tainted by Giratina, Yveltal, and Darkrai are not allowed here!”
“I am not tainted! I am the same as ever!” Umbreon said, shocked. “I did not accuse you of being tainted when you evolved from Lillipup to Herdier! Why should my evolution from Eevee to Umbreon be any different?”
“Because Herdier is not affiliated with the Dark type,” Herdier snarled.
“Herdier, we were brothers,” Umbreon whispered desperately. “We were family…”
“Were,” Herdier pointed out. “Not are.”
Umbreon stared at Herdier, heartbreak in his eyes.
“Master has given us the command to do whatever it takes to drive you away,” Herdier warned. “He does not want you tainting our home.”
“But… It is my home too,” Umbreon said. His vision was getting watery.
“That is why I am giving you a warning, a chance to leave and never return.”
“It is my home too. I cannot leave my home.”
Herdier looked at Umbreon for a long moment. “Then you never will leave again.”
The Normal type let out a howl.

That day Mrs. Johnson brought home a Meowth to catch Rattata in the house, and comfort herself in Umbreon’s absence. That evening Mrs. Johnson stayed outside, stroking the young Meowth and watching the sunset, wondering where her Umbreon was now. She prayed that Arceus would keep him safe, and that she would see him again.
The Meowth let out a hiss, and Mrs. Johnson looked down. One of the Herdier had something smeared across its fur. Mrs. Johnson put down Meowth, and kneeled next to the Herdier, touching the Normal type’s fur, hesitantly.
It was blood.
“How did you get blood in your fur?” Mrs. Johnson wondered aloud.
The Herdier yapped softly, before plodding over to the edge of the forest. Mrs. Johnson followed, Meowth skulking behind her hesitantly.
She looked down at the ground. And screamed.

Mrs. Johnson stormed into the house. Her husband looked up from reading. “What is it, dear?” he asked.
“Do you know what your Herdier have done?” Mrs. Johnson asked, almost snarling.
Mr. Johnson frowed. “Anna… I know that it’s hard, but--”
“Adam,” Mrs. Johnson yelled. “You did not need to kill him!”
“Yes, I did!” Mr. Johnson insisted. “He was going to bring misfortune to us all, we cannot have--”
“He was lonely! He wanted to return home!”
“Then let him return to the Distortion World! That is the only home for those tainted ones!”
“Adam, he was not--”
“He was!”
“No!”
“Yes!”
The argument continued building, the tensions rose, until one entity decided that enough was enough.
And in the midst of the night, a brilliant white light shone through the windows.
Mr. and Mrs. Johnson rushes outside. The light was coming from the town! Putting their argument aside momentarily, they hitched up the Tauros to one of the carts and rode it as fast as they could to the town. A heavy tension hung in the air during the silent ride.
One they reached the town square, they saw that everyone had gathered in the square, wondering what the blinding white light was.
Finally, the light condensed and changed until a miraculous creature stood before the crowds.
The creature had four legs, and yet it hovered high above the ground. Each leg was tipped with a golden hoof. The creature was clad in lustrous white fur with dark skin, and encircling its’ torso was a shining golden ring, with four viridian gemstones set in it. Peering out of its face were two green eyes shining like miniature suns, burning with an unreadable expression. Eighteen orbs orbited around the creature, each glowing a slightly different color.
Gasps of shock and amazement echoed below in the crowd, as each human instinctively realized that this was their Lord Arceus. The crowd rushed to its feet, and kneeled.
This has gone on long enough, the voice of Arceus rang out. He surveyed the crowd below Him, before continuing. You persecute each other, as if you alone are worthy of forgiveness and favor. And yet, how can one be rewarded if they do naught but destroy this Utopia I gave to them? I gave you fruit and meat to eat. I gave you beauty in all around you. I gave you Pokemon who understand that there is no greater love than making their friends happy. And this is how you treat my Utopia? You slay the loyal Pokemon who have been your friend since the day they were hatched, simply because their typing has changed?
Mr. Johnson felt that he was growing hot. He couldn’t help but feel that Lord Arceus was speaking about him, in particular. Guilt grew in his heart, and began to gnaw at his entire being.
I may change my type as I please. If I chose to wear the guise of the Dark type, would you turn your back on me? Arceus demanded.
There were murmurs of “No,” and “Of course not, Lord Arceus.”
Then why do you betray your friends for the same reason!? Arceus shrieked. The orbs around him spun faster and faster, until they suddenly stopped. I give you a warning. Stop this madness, or I shall stop it for you.
The orbs began to spin faster and faster around Arceus as he prepared to leave. Waves of light radiated off him, when Mr. Johnson found himself speaking up.
“Lord Arceus…” he muttered weakly.
The spinning stopped. Arceus peered down on Mr. Johnson. Adam Johnson, the Legendary pronounced.
“But… Yveltal… And Darkrai… And Giratina… To be affiliated with their type, the typing of Unholy Legendaries… Surely is a sin itself?” he asked.
Darkrai uses his power of nightmares to warn those in danger, Arceus intoned. And Yveltal’s gift of death is simply a way to bring all things back to me. Neither is to be feared. Giratina was banished to the Distortion World, it is true, but she has since repented and remains there of her own choice. Nothing in the universe is pure evil or pure good. There is no such thing as a type where all Pokemon affiliated with it are evil, and the opposite remains true. Just as there is no race if humans made up of solely evil humans or good humans. All there is is living beings, finding their path. Some may wander off the path, it is true. But we guide them back to the path, we do not charge off the path in a misguided quest to force them back on.
And with that, finally they saw the light. But it was not what any of them had expected.
It took time, it was true, but the people and Pokemon of Earth slowly managed to make a world where they ceased to judge others based on their type, their skin, or their beliefs.
And Arceus and His Legendary Pokemon were at last at peace.
