A sea of reds, blues, and yellows covered a patch of land at the center of a crossroads. It was the centerpiece of a roundabout that made up the crossroads. In the center was the flower patch, and around it was a dirt trail that split off into three different paths. In between the paths was lush, green grass that had dandelions scattered about them.

Following the east path would take you to a wooded area home to many birds and snakes. The woods were always a lively place, and many of the animals that lived there were extremely happy. To the west was a city. It was a bit of an abandoned city, but it got lively every once in a while. The people in this city were a bit eccentric, but if you could get in good with them, you would be fine. The northern path would bring you to another city home to many artists and journalists. It was nice here as well. The people were typically kind and caring, and the artists had a wonderful talent.

The centerpiece of the roundabout wasn't home to just a beautiful flower patch though. It was also home to the bears. Many people passed by the bears on a daily basis to go explore the woods or to go from city to city. They were peaceful bears and offered no harm to anyone that passed by. The bears would tend to the flowers and make sure that all was well with them each day. If anything ever happened to their precious flowers, the bears would be upset and seek revenge on those that had brought harm to their flowers.

There was always a mysterious green mist in the area as well. Even the flowers and the bears took on this green aura as a result. The aura stood out against the brown fur of the bears and the red or blue or purple or yellow petals of the flowers. This aura and mist rarely ever changed colors, but if it did, it was usually because of the mood of the bears or the flowers.

On this particular day, one of the bears was relaxing in the center of the flower field. One of his legs was lifted up as he gazed up at the clouds. His friends were in the woods, preparing their home for the winter that was coming. Temperatures were dropping, and even though it was only September, the bears wanted to prepare sooner rather than later.

One bear had to stay behind with the flowers though. If anything happened while all of the bears were away, they would never be able to live with themselves. That was why they always had one bear stay behind. If anything happened and that lone bear couldn't handle it, he could always call his friends, and they would come to assist him.

It wasn't until mid-afternoon when the beautiful aroma of the flower patch had been interrupted by an awful smell. The flower patch always had this nice, calming, peaceful aroma that always pleased the bears and helped them concentrate on their yoga poses. No one was really sure what had made the bears so fascinated by yoga, but as long as they weren't bothering anyone, no one really seemed to care.

Today, however, their yoga was bothered by this awful smell. The bears didn't bother anyone else, so why did someone have to bother them? The lone bear in the center of the flower patch sat up and looked around. To his right, the aura of the flowers had changed from green to violet. The color was slowly starting to spread across the whole flower patch, so the lone bear stood up and walked towards the source. As he got closer and closer, the bad smell got stronger and stronger.

His eyes fell upon a black furred creature with a single white stripe running down his back. A skunk. The bear growled at the skunk, but he made no motion of moving.

"Go away," the bear said. The violet aura of the flowers was beginning to turn red with the bear's anger. A single shot of violet energy was sent up into the air.

This was a very special flower patch in that it could warn you when danger was coming. The flower patch not only offered the bears their power, but it also kept the bears and the people of the surrounding cities and the woods safe. It had the power to send up a beams of light into the sky to warn the surrounding cities and the woods of any impending danger. The single beam of violet energy that had just gone up was for the bears that were in the forest to return to the flower patch. The bears were the protectors of this flower patch and the first line of defense for the cities and the woods that split off from paths on the crossroads.

"Go away," the bear repeated. The skunk made no motion to move. The bear tried growling, but even then, the skunk stood his ground.

"No," the skunk said. "We want to destroy this flower patch. It's nothing but harmful to other creatures around here."

"How does it harm the other creatures around here?" the bear asked. "No one's ever been bothered by the flower patch before. The people of the cities have always spoken highly of the flower patch, and the animals in the forest have never complained about it."

"This flower patch prevents us from entering the city," the skunk said.

"Well, maybe if you didn't smell so bad," another bear said. The first bear turned to see that his four other bear friends had returned. The second bear spoke up. "The flowers don't like your smell. They sense danger."

"Well, it keeps us from entering the city," the skunk repeated. "Either let my kind enter the city or face our wrath."

"Nah, the city's better off without your kind," the second bear said. "You smell."

"Fine," the skunk huffed. "I'll be back with my friends. Hopefully you've changed your minds by then."

The bears were on high alert after that incident with the skunk. The mayors of the two nearby cities had also visited the flower patches after seeing the warning flash of violet light the other day to speak with the bears. Another of the flower patch's mystical powers was that it allowed the bears to speak with the elves. It was a fascinating ability that had shocked the elves at first, but they were quickly able to get over it knowing that the bears would be helping to protect their cities.

A violet mist still continued to surround the flower patch. The bears spent their days and nights at the flower patch, and one would stay awake while other slept at night. Days passed, but the skunk had yet to return with his friends.

It wasn't until the tenth day that the skunk finally returned. With him were two other skunks. If they thought the smell was bad the first time, this time it was ten times worse. One of the bears gagged at how awful the smell was.

"We've returned," one of the skunks said. "I am John, the leader of the skunks. To my left is Tom, and to my right is Jacob."

"Look at them, they can't even synchronize their names so they all start with the same letter," a female bear said.

"Quiet, Emily," a male bear said.

"Sorry," Emily replied quietly.

"I'm Elias, the leader of these bears," the male bear said. "This is Ethan, Evelynn, Emily, and Ethan." As he introduced the bears, he moved a paw to point to them.

"Great, now that we have those ridiculous formalities out of the way, have you decided to let us into the cities?" John asked.

"You cannot enter the cities," Elias said. "I'm sorry, but the mayors don't want your kind there."

"Then we'll just have to force our way in," John said.

"Then you'll have to go through us," Elias replied. He was the first to step out of the boundaries of the flower patch. The mist around the flower patch turned red in a matter of seconds. Two beams of red light shot up into the sky. That was a signal to the cities that there was about to be a fight. Elias spoke up again. "I doubt they'll need to prepare for a fight. Five bears against three skunks, you're outnumbered."

"So you think," John said. He turned to his skunk friends. "Jacob, Tom, you know what to do."

The skunks formed a V formation with their tails pointing at the bears, who had lined up outside of the flower patch. The bears had taken on fighting stances, unfazed by the skunks and the fact that their tails were pointing at them. A cool breeze blew through the area, sending the red mist around the bears to create an aura around them.

"Dearest flowers, please protect us as we protect you," Elias said. A second cool breeze blew through the area. This time, a pale green barrier formed around the flower patch. The good thing about these flowers was that they were able to protect themselves as needed.

The skunks were the first to attack, shaking their tails to send out a brownish-green mist from their tails. The mist had an awful smell, but the bears moved to surround the skunks. Only Elias took the brunt of the mist, and it caused him to gag.

When the skunks leapt forward to strike, the other four bears pounced too.

Only Jacob and Tom were able to be caught by Ethan and Evan. Evelynn and Emily had fallen flat on their faces. The female bears, unfortunately, weren't very good at fighting, though Evelynn was slightly better than Emily when it came to that. Emily was just all growl, but no bite.

John still rushed forward to strike Elias while he was recovering from the disgusting smell, but Evelynn was able to scramble to her feet and tackle the skunk away from her friend. The smell lingered in the air though, and she was forced to let go of the skunk almost instantly and cover her nose. Jacob and Tom released more of the gross smell from their tails, and they too were released so that the bears could cover their noses.

"I think we're going to need a new way of fighting them," Elias said as he and the rest of his bear companions retreated into the barrier. "They can use their awful smell to protect themselves."

"Maybe we should go in one on one," Evelynn said. "Or Emily and I could distract them while you, Ethan, and Evan take them out. I think if we take them out one at a time, we'll be fine."

"Come on out and fight!" Tom yelled. "Stop hiding behind your pretty smelling flowers! We're going to kill them all once we finish beating you guys up!"

The mist around the flowers turned blue for just a moment to shoot a burst of energy at Tom. There was a splash when it came into contact, and the skunk was now wet. The mist returned back to its red color.

"Let's take the wet one out first then," Emily said. "He probably stinks the least."

And so Evelynn went out first, luring the skunks towards her. They fell for her trap easily, and they didn't even notice that Emily had come out. She tackled Tom and separated him from his companions. Evan rushed out and grabbed Tom. The bear leaned back, much like a catapult. He raised one foot in the air, and then slammed it back down on the ground moments later, flinging his body back up and sending Tom flying away.

"No!" John shouted as he watched Tom fly away. "Not Tom!"

With John distracted, Ethan and Elias were able to do the same thing with him and Jacob. Emily called out to the two skunks as they flew away. "Don't come back either! We don't want you here! We'll do it again if you come back!"

Now that the skunks were gone, the barrier around the flower patch disappeared, and the mist around the patch changed from red to green again. Two green beams of energy shot up into the sky this time. Those were signals of peace.

"Looks like we were right about the cities not needing to prepare to fight," Elias said as he and his bear friends relaxed in the flower patch. "Nice job today, bears."

The day had been saved by the bears. No skunks would ever cross paths here again, that was for sure.
