I ADORE your art and character styles. I seriously wish I was as good as you are, because hot damn, girl, you've got heaps of skills and talent!

Really, I can't spot any flaws. They would be cool to see as finished art in color, but these sketches are still awesome with their own unique flavor and style.

So first of all, Gem. These are REALLY amazing! Art this good makes me wish my friend here kept up with his art, but he lost that skill now. I bet you could even make some of the most complex characters to draw as well is super amazing detail. Seriously it's THAT good! I'm in the same boat as the others in that feeling. I'd love to be able to draw out anything like that, but my skill never improving when I tried kinda...forced me away xD. I think my art skill even got worse over time hahaha!

Yup! I would tell you do that! Nothing would help you more than taking on new tasks and keeping up some kind of challenge to push you to improve upon that skill more, but we can't force you, it's all up to you to decide that!

If I could draw like you, I'd have probably already made a bunch of Life is Strange fanart. Suppose if I had a request it'd to see more art for that game. As much as I admire your accuracy with Pokemon, it's refreshing to see artwork on here that isn't Pokemon.

For example, as I've gotten older my eyes perceive more and I recongise things that just seem 'wrong'. Before I started back here with my Pokemon related sketches, I hadn't drawn anything in probably a year or so, yet I was able to pick up right where I'd left off, and even improved I'd say. That's because compared to when you were a kid, you know what looks right or wrong, to you, and so can naturally draw better. At least that's how it works for me. xD I dunno, it might be different for other people.

It just occurred to me... I never posted some of my most detailed works on dA. Maybe I'll stick them up on my Tumblr sometime. I drew this super cool elephant for my nan's 65th birthday. A baby elephant. It is so cute. >u< I'll have to show you sometime. It doesn't really mean that a detailed drawing is any harder than a simpler one, it just takes a lot more time as there's more lighting and shadowing to play around with.

I doubt I could tell anyone how I draw like that. I'd just say to someone "I look at it, and I do it." XD Doesn't make sense for most. I suppose it helps to have an eye for these things? Like you need to know the direction of the light, and how it works, to make realistic drawings. The best thing I can offer is to go outside and look at EVERYTHING. It's much easier to see how light works then. I also love to tell people that pencils DON'T just have one shade. A single pencil can have tonnes of shades! Light pressing is great for shading, and it's better if you hold the pencil on its side and use a back and forth motion. This gets rid of ugly lines. O:< Press harder for outlines, and vary the two. Where lines intersect, make the joins thicker, and darker etc.

I could go on all day, but I won't. Cx I'd also love to teach people, maybe I can try some kind of sketch tutorial... It might help.

I find a lot of the time I lack motivation, so if I have a 'push', or a request or something, it forces me to actually do it. Which is best (I need deadlines in my life lawl). No no no. Well throughout elementary school (year 2-5 I guess that is outside America?)I made a friend who I learned had an amazing art talent. Seriously, one of the last things he he gave me (if I could find it I'd post a picture of it) of Goku from DBZ. Literally, the picture turned out like something you'd see the DBZ creator make. I know there's many artists out there like that, you included! Once we hit middle school he was in a separate class than me. So we barely got to talk after that. When I did I asked if he could still drawn things like he used to. When he tried it didn't turn out as well so he told me he "gave it up." I mean yeah, now being older I know better ways to handle drawing anything, but it still ends up pretty bad =3

That was one thing I never worked on as much because I could never have the image fit proportionately to a good design haha. So I found shading pointless to try at least til I got any better. Which it never did back then.

Some people are kinda just born with the talent. It makes it hard to explain. Some just have the desire for it which pushes them to better their art. Tutorials help, but to certain points.

Yup! Those 'pushes' could really help with creativity honestly. Oh, by the "shy" on the requesting thing it's just an old habit. Ever since I've been on forums. Sigs/banners have been created for me by other people. First 5 years I had to ask others to help make them and I always never wanted to bug anyone about it. So it's an old habit I have still =3. I might be able to think of something though! =D

Also, if you want to dabble in coloring and digital art, maybe itd be best to go with a really simple line art that isn't 100% refined and work from that. Its a lot better than working from something you already refined, then feeling like you ruined it when you went to color and shade it and therefore losing any motivation to try the medium at all. Gah it happens to me so often!!!

If I think of another request, it will definitely try to keep your interests in mind. After all, there IS such a thing as a good requester. Requests are usually taken to practice and try new things, so it's wonderful to have someone that requests that has your interests and skill level in mind.

Yeah, we have Primary School, which is Prep, then Grade 1 - 6. :p Then Year 7 - 12 is Secondary College. Cause we're weird like that haha. That's cool! But lots of people just do it as a hobby, myself included. I don't have the motivation to make illustration an actual thing. xD I mean I could sell my works, but I don't draw enough for that, and what I do draw are usually sketches. I'm just fine drawing for myself and for friends, I don't need to make money, or a name for myself, out of it. You should draw something sometime. I'd like to see! c:

I tried to explain drawing to my younger step siblings and they just didn't get it. xD Then I showed them on a piece of paper and had them try, but they STILL couldn't do it. I couldn't figure out what was so hard about it, but then I suppose it just comes naturally to me, and I have a different understanding than they do. I kept telling them to NOT push the pencil so hard into the page and create a LIGHT outline in case they had to erase it. Well their 'light' outline wasn't light enough and the poor page suffered bruises. </3 Ah well. xD

That's true about tutorials. Even I can learn to a point, but then it's really all about practice. They can teach you HOW to do certain things, but that doesn't mean you'll be any good at them.

Sure can! Fair enough, I have habits that I can't break either. xD I'm shy as well, but in person, not so much online. I HATE talking on the phone. Awkward silences will be the death of me. x.x;; I tell all my friends (and it says so in my sig), that anyone can ask for an artwork. And I'll accept it if I want. :3 Generally I don't turn people down, though. I can be too nice for my own good. n.n;;

And if you ever need a new sig or avi, I don't mind if you ask me. :D

I sure will! :3 I should have another character for my upcoming fanfic drawn soon, then I plan to do some more LiS artwork (due to popular request and cause I love it so much 8D). And who knows what after that!

Ah no, see I NEVER colour my sketches. xD That is, indeed, what ruins them. If I go to make a digital work, yeah, I usually start from scratch and draw the entire thing on the computer. It's just easier that way. I did TRY to colour my sketches once, but that doesn't work at all and I kinda rage quit - short of stabbing my Wacom with the pen. XD That's probably why it's been soooooooo long since I've done any digital works at all. Actually the last one I did was a LoZ request for one of my friends on Facebook. Imma share it here cause I can. Spent so long on this. xD SO. LONG.

THAT IS... AWESOME!!!

Okay, so here I was lying in bed at 5:30AM (I typically wake up at this time naturally for no bloody reason at all), and I just decided to whip out my tablet to browse PXR. Ah, I got a mention, let's check it out. I tap the link, and WHAM, there's this masterpiece, and I'm fumbling with the tablet keyboard trying to reply and said "you know what, screw it, I'm getting my butt out of bed, hopping on my computer, and writing a proper response to this one.

I TOTALLY ADORE IT, it's beyond incredible and I really love the mischievous grin! You captured all the cool, fun, and mischievous things I love about Emolga flawlessly. I was feeling a bit down yesterday, but this definitely made me smile this morning, and for that much-needed happiness, I thank you a lot. You made this WAY faster than I had expected, and did an absolutely amazing job on it! Like Xanthe said, the shading is amazing, the pose and expression is unique and super cool and cute, and it totally captures the charm that makes your art so lovable. Well the Enolga from the anime IS female and it does have that appeal (I swear it LOVED doing it too). It was hard NOT to smile at it when seeing it. Same goes for the one Gem drew. She captured it perfectly!

I was already really liking Emolga a lot even before seeing the anime episodes where Iris's Emolga appears. And then when I saw those and was laughing at all the mischievous and naughty things she does and all the hilarious expressions she has, I was like "YES, THIS IS DEFINITELY THE POKEMON FOR ME!"

Ah, what a fun and totally cool Pokemon.

Okay, so here I was lying in bed at 5:30AM (I typically wake up at this time naturally for no bloody reason at all), and I just decided to whip out my tablet to browse PXR. Ah, I got a mention, let's check it out. I tap the link, and WHAM, there's this masterpiece, and I'm fumbling with the tablet keyboard trying to reply and said "you know what, screw it, I'm getting my butt out of bed, hopping on my computer, and writing a proper response to this one.

I TOTALLY ADORE IT, it's beyond incredible and I really love the mischievous grin! You captured all the cool, fun, and mischievous things I love about Emolga flawlessly. I was feeling a bit down yesterday, but this definitely made me smile this morning, and for that much-needed happiness, I thank you a lot. You made this WAY faster than I had expected, and did an absolutely amazing job on it! Like Xanthe said, the shading is amazing, the pose and expression is unique and super cool and cute, and it totally captures the charm that makes your art so lovable. I swear, the more I look at it, the more I smile.

I can't believe you got up at 5am to write this. XD My artwork is more precious than your sleep! Haha. I was really hoping I did your cute Emolga justice on this one, but I think I captured its expression fairly well! I got (literally) a crap tonne of references from Google to get it just right. Aww, Neo! You shouldn't ever feel down, but if ya do I can always draw you another Emolga picture. n.n I'm happy it makes you feel happy, because that's what I strive for when I draw. I swear that's one of the reasons I'd love to be able to draw better xD. Drawing characters I like the most would be awesome. I figured as much more would be more difficult and time consuming for sure. It's just the craziest thing that came to mind when I tried thinking of literally anything, but like I said....some reason I couldn't get away from the Pokemon idea lol. Not only would it take a long time, but the more in one photo the less details that could go into each really since they'd have to be shrunk down rather than one large image.

Well I did think more on it and I think rather than anything specific I'd like to just request a Pikachu and leave the real design up to you as the artist =3 sometimes I'm just a bit uncreative xD. Though sometimes I can have sudden thoughts of inspiration. I thought maybe the Detective Pikachu at first, but nah I'd wanna experience that game first hand before anything and go with something more normal Chu related. Since you draw Pikachu on a daily basis I'll leave it up to you if that's fine? Or I can throw a random idea out there and roll with it xD.

Yeah though that group idea was about the best I could come up with. Even if there would be 2 Pikachu one would be male and the other female right? I don't know exactly how many would say even want to take part in something like that having their pokesona featured. So it was just one of those things I thought of and just threw out there =3

That project sounds good, but yeah if you go with all the ones you like most first it'll throw off any motivation. Maybe schedule certain ones in groups (at least one you really like in each) so that it keeps that motivation up and going. Like I've seen musicians on YT do is just doing them in order (though for drawing that could be a bit different and have it's dull moments I'd think). Maybe start with a starter at a time in the group and add a few more of the same typing or something (i.e: Bulbasaur, Bellsprout, etc).

I really wanna say it's "NOT FUZZY ENOUGH!" for the lawls, but this is serious time. Yes! When I draw something I like, I'm a lot more motivated to make it awesome and actually finish it. xD As opposed to stuff I don't like a whole lot, where close enough is usually good enough. It's really bad when people ask me to draw something and then I say "sure, like what?". And they have no idea and I sit there for half an hour trying to figure out what to draw. =.= Can't think for the life of me. And yeah, smaller images are usually quicker, cause less detail. :3

Maybe, after the game is out, I can draw detective Pikachu for you sometime. :D That would be cool.

Yes. xD My Pikachu is female so there would be a male and a female, then a Flareon, Snivy, Bulbasaur... whatever else lol. That's probably more of a group project I can start off with. I'm sure Detective Pikachu would be great! I'd love to see your interpretation of it. I'm sure in your art style it would be pretty interesting (honestly I just wanna know if my theory about it is true now xD). Again though you don't have to draw it for me, unless you just really want to =3

Yeah I don't know all of them by heart yet....just a select few. Like male and female Pikachu, then a Flareon, Snivy, Bulbasaur, Emolga, Jolteon, etc. Though like I said that was something random I threw out....I didn't expect you to actually think about it xD even if it does sound great. While I was thinking of a request I just kept getting images of like a photograph and a group shot/image. Kinda like a memories to look back on kinda thing. Even though I knew it was a crazy idea, I'm one for writing things out I think of either way =3

Aside from that...Yeah making sure you find a way to keep the motivation during a planned long term project is important. So sketching out all of your 'favorite' at one time would immediately take it all away. Maybe make a list of certain ones to draw in a batch (or throughout the week of like one typing).

I am currently working out pricing, but it's so hard. Like, I don't want to undercharge but I don't want to overcharge either. I wanted to tear my hair out yesterday trying to think of prices. xD

For the general sketch I'm thinking something along the lines on $25 AUD? Which is approx. $18.50 USD. You're lucky since the Aussie dollar is currently under the US. xD Obviously the more/less detail it has, the price might differ a little. What do people think? /seriouslyineedhelp

And sketches are easy to price. It's the full-blown artwork I'm having trouble with. 3:

It must be so hard to price! I recon you just have to pick a price to start. If you don't get (m)any takers you can lower it and if you get lots you can think about increasing it. I assume that's how people come up with prices! $25 seems pretty reasonable! I guess you could also take into account how much time each one takes, and if you want to gather interest to begin with, you could offer some lower prices things to get started maybe. I have never bought art so I have no idea what things go for!

It's all about what it is, how much time, how much they want in the sketch, if they really want the full artwork in person or just digitally, etc. It's a tough thing to sort out. Probably it would be best to just do a test and see where it goes. As Sarah said, set it at a price. If it gets too much attention, set it a bit higher after you catch up on current orders. If not many takers, decrease it a little. It's a learn as you go kinda process. Then again sometimes it'll be less active while others it may skyrocket. Hey if you get well known enough you may start getting advertised. I know one artist who was advertised by a Youtuber recently and her order list blew up to the point she needed to shut down her store just to catch up with orders. That was back in October and it's still down today =3
Still, would be interested in looking into it at some point after you start commissions...of course I don't wanna go broke either xD

As for the name of the project it shouldn't be too hard. You'll come up with something. Could even use your name as part of it. Gemma's Gems, Art's a Gem, etc stuff like that. Naming projects are hard for something long term =3. Unless you think it'd be better to use a more set name with Pokemon as to help advertise the actual project.

If anything, it'll only help you improve more and get your workout there (never know, it may even lead to something bigger). That and it'll help fund future projects and such.

Even if I set my prices high (which I won't) it's all about advertising. If you get popular people advertising your stuff, others are going to naturally want to buy it. I saw on dA you can pay people (in points or money) to advertise on their page. Might be worth looking into if it's not too much. Whatever gets me out there, right? xD Hopefully I can finalise prices enough to get 'em out this weekend and actually start some commissions!

And Sarah, I read that some person said not to start out low, even if you don't get many commissions, because people will expect it of you that you keep your prices low. So if you raise them too much they probably won't come back for more. Also the price represents the quality of your work. So the better the quality, the higher the price.

Also, have a Raichu sprite. For Speed's HD pixel project thing. xD Took me forever cause I nitpicked it so much. Oh and an animated icon I did for my dA sometime last week.

Another artist I've been following just reopened her store today. While she does coloring as well, she sells her art (not custom though as far as I've seen) for around $15 + shipping. That's not through DA though so it's something you'll need to look into for sure. So around your if you aren't wanting to start out too low then about what Sarah said sounds fair. If no gain then lowering it may help. Hey maybe someone will find you online and help advertise for you that has connections. It seems that's how things go now and how all these artists or people in general get more well known. Keep us updated though on what you figure out or if you need help figuring it out.

Considering things, I don't really think they're overpriced. I do put hours of hard effort into these things, and I used a lot of references which priced things the same - I just used a currency converter to work out my prices. xD Things look so much lower if you use USD or Euro as your currency lol. But yeah, if they need adjusting I can always do it later. I did say certain things were open to negotiation depending on detail. Prices can be so finicky around that.

Even if I just get commissions for sketches for now, I'm happy. :3

Oh NO, of course not! AUD is only for people who have the currency, or are located in Australia. That just lists my currency (makes it easier on my end). PayPal sorts all that out. xD And I pay for any conversion fees that may happen. On top of what I charge for my comm. pricing, though, with the invoice I send out I'll list and extra 3.5% fee which covers most of whatever PayPal happens to charge. Generally that's only a few cents more at the lower prices. At the high-end of things ($80) it's a couple of dollars more.

I'm new to selling on PayPal myself, so I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I'm sure I'll figure it out as I go along. xD I did try reading their website but it only confused me more, aha.

Well someone asked DeVito at a con recently that hosted a panel with the cast from Always Sunny in Philidelphia. During the Q&A someone asked if he'd be voicing the Pikachu. His response? "No? What the F**k is Pokemon?" So I'm pretty sure it's a big "N-O" on the DeVitochu thought.

It'd probably be a great addition to it yeah! Might help give an idea of things like it to others that may want that kind of stuff. =)

Oh you get used to using paws to writing things out with pencils eventually. When you've done it for as long as Gem and I have it's easy. Especially when you cut them down to Pika-sized.

And now I'm like, oh okay I totally see why. c;I was thinking about this earlier...pardon my gushing, hahah. xD I think it's because Sans, like a lot of characters in Undertale, is very well-developed and his personality is entirely believable and, actually pretty realistic. I think it's the enigma, too, and all the emotional baggage he hides behind a veil of laziness. Kinda. As someone on gamefaqs put it: definitely someone you'd want to go drinking with. Also I guess his traits are like, desirable as in a long-term relationship thing? xD I dunno, tbh his demeanor almost reminds me of David. Kinda. Like, not some stereotypical pretty girly-man anime dude. He's realistic, and it's really refreshing.I think that pretty much covers it. xD I think it's just something that's hard to explain? Hah.

I DID IT! You guys talked me into it, even though I think I've plowed through quite a few spoilers already. Not a biggie. Wouldn't be the first time I've run into spoilers but still enjoyed the game.

And Papyrus and Sans are EFFING HILARIOUS! I can see why you two like these guys! XD And I agree with Sans, crosswords are harder than word jumbles (in case you needed proof!). But yeah, these two guys are funny and crazy.

Aside from that, I'm taking the pacifist approach. I find it's actually a much more interesting way to go through a traditional RPG. Some guys are easy to figure out, others are a bit tricky. It took me a bit of time to figure out how to get past Toriel without attacking, and trying to dodge all that stuff isn't easy, but it's an interesting approach as opposed to just randomizing hit rolls and stuff. But yeah, the game definitely has a silly Earthbound-like humor and quirkiness to it.

Nah you didn't drag us down. If anything it made me want to make the Pikachu happy again by giving her shelter and warmth. But I really love the sketch. Those ribbons are awesome. I didn't notice the falling the first time around 'cause I was blind, but I love how you depict motion. It looks smooth. And as always, you're great at expressive faces.

I'm in the same boat as Speedy in terms of interpretation. I find the expression and action together an interesting pair. You're falling (not you-you), but instead of a surprised or fearful expression, there's a dispirited one.

I hope we'll see a happy Chu soon!

UM. I'd have to check cause there were a couple of specific brushes from this (https://www.kylebrush.com/#brushes) website I found a while back, and I bought the Megapack. xD Yeah it's a bit different to my usual style for sure! Tbh I'd love to go more impressionistic, but I have such a hard time doing that. I'm a sucker for details and that kinda style is a lot more loose and free, so I'd really have to train myself to ignore the details and focus on bolder shapes and raw lines. IT'S SO HARD. ;O;

I dunno. XD I found a few pictures as inspiration for colour schemes, but I added my own tweaks. :p Ya know, the bangs and such aha. I should, shouldn't I? I've actually been meaning to make a tutorial at some point. xD Eric was lucky and got to see me work a little before he had to go to sleep.
