Stuck on how to begin that epic story, or just want to practice writing something? This is the place for you.
Each Monday, I'll post a prompt--it could be a first line of a story, a what-if question, a quote, or anything in between. (but it will usually have something to do with Pokemon) What you do with that prompt is up to you--be creative and write as much or as little as you want within forum guidelines.
You can either post your replies in here or in a thread of their own if they're on the long side.
Of course, you are also welcome to submit prompt ideas--but I (or another Writer's Desk mod) need to have them by Friday (so it can be posted the following Monday)
You do not have to write on that week's prompt if you don't want to--every prompt will be archived and can be used at any time
I hope that this will provide new writers with inspiration and allow veterans a chance to sharpen their skills.
Happy writing!

GREAT IDEA, EMERALD!!! Are people to post the link to their thread of completed prompt writing piece in this thread? I'll definitely try this out at some point. Also, is this solely for stories, or also for poetry? I think it would fit for both!

Title: King Arthur and the Pokemon of the Round Table
Link: http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?9421-Weekly-Prompt-King-Arthur-and-the-Pokemon-of-the-Round-Table&p=181684#post181684
Word Count: 1587
Myth Based On: The origin story of King Arthur. This version isn't widely known and is by far not the accepted version but it's always my favorite because Arthur literally forgets his master's sword, sees the sword in the stone, pulls it without realizing what it is, and runs it back to his master. I always thought that was kind of amusing.

Your Writing Prompt this week is…
You suddenly find yourself the master of a genie! How did you obtain this genie? What do you plan to do with it?
EmeraldSky

Short and sweet intro paragraph:
I found the lamp with Aida inside in the ruins of a lost Arabic city. Understandably, I was shocked when I rubbed it and she appeared, and even more shocked when she called me her master, and that whatever I wished for was mine, within reason--I couldn't use her magic to kill anyone, or revive someone that had died, and I couldn't force anyone to fall in love with me (she was very adamant about this rule)
I promised I would use my wishes (there were no numerical limits, just whatever you wanted within reason) wisely, and to help people--I can't wait to see what adventures await us!

Aw, that was really sweet--a perfect heartwarming reunion scene.
Lantern is a character I haven't used in a long time. Back before Sloane Jackson was a dark type specialist, back before Dylan Thomas was even a figment of a thought, and back when Lance was actually their father (not anymore), Lantern was Sloane's twin sister that was separated from her at birth. I decided to bring her back but since Sloane had changed, I decided Lantern should too.

I strayed a little bit from the prompt but I had the idea of death being delivered by mail and I just had to do it. This was going to be a more heartwarming story that ended up being a comedy instead. Still this was rather fun to write so I enjoyed it.

Your prompt this week, in light of the new Sun/Moon info:
What role do you think Lilie will play in the story?
http://www.pokemoncrossroads.com/forum/showthread.php?12869-Igloo-(Prompt-Thread-Week-9)&p=230521&viewfull=1#post230521
So, technically I know this prompt was to speculate what Lillie's role would be but since I've played sun and moon I thought it wouldn't be fair really so instead I speculated what her role would be AFTER Sun and Moon.

Hello everybody! Here is my text for the prompt of this week. It's a true story (all the dialogues happened in French so I translated them into English in my text, but otherwise it's a true story).
In 2016, from February 17 until and including February 19, when I was in the last year of the high school, I participated in a spiritual retreat with some of my classmates and two of my teachers.
On February 17 evening, we watched the movie "Of Gods and Men" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Of_Gods_and_Men_(film)) in its French version. I didn't understand everything in this movie, but the elements I understood triggered a panic attack for me. So, when the movie had finished and when my classmates had left the room, I came closer to one of my teachers. I was breathing so fast that she said : "It looks like you have just come back from a marathon!". I answered her that I was stressed because of the movie. So, we left the room and we went upstairs together. While we were going upstairs, she said to me : "What is this breathing? And you are so pale!".
When we arrived near the bedrooms, she advised me to take a shower so that I could calm down, and she said to me : "Good night, sweet dreams, no stress and remember to breathe deeply and slowly if you are stressed". So, I wished her a good night and sweet dreams.
Then, I took a shower, I brushed my teeth, I wrote in my diary, I set my alarm (on my original Nintendo DS) so that it would ring at 7 AM and I went to bed. It was midnight.
That night was terrible for me. First, I was still stressed due to the movie. Thanks to the deep breathing exercises, I ended up calming down and falling asleep. Not for a long time : I woke up suddenly because I remembered that I had set the alarm. Effectively, alarms are very stressful for me. Usually, I don't use them, but that night, I decided to set an alarm because it was late when I went to bed and I had to wake up early the next morning.
So, I woke up, I checked the time, I fell asleep again, then I woke up again because I was afraid of the alarm, I checked the time, I fell asleep again, and so on until I had to go to the bathroom. It was 5:30 AM. So, I went to the bathroom, I did my business and I flushed the toilet, but the flush continued to make noise for over half an hour. As a result, I couldn't fall asleep again. When the flush stopped making noise, there was less than an hour left before the alarm. Consequently, I couldn't sleep because I was too afraid of the alarm. Finally, at 6:40 AM, I got up and I disabled the alarm.

I have the same problem with alarms if I know I have to wake up for something important! I use an alarm every day so that is fine, but when I am worried about sleeping through my alarm I tend to wake up every hour or two! I haven't heard of that movie but I looked it up on Wikipedia and it seems like it could be quite confronting.

Hello everybody! Here is my story for the "We are having technical difficulties...please stand by..." prompt :
On February 26, 2018, a female Chikorita turned 19. Because it was a Monday, she had to wake up very early on her birthday in order to arrive at her college on time. In the morning, she had an oral test in English. She got 9/10 for that test, but it was very stressful for her. In the afternoon, she had some classes, even though she usually doesn’t have any classes in the afternoon on Mondays. And Dratini, who was Chikorita’s only friend from college, also had a busy day.
When Chikorita got back home, she studied for her Dutch test. Then, she decided to call the Bad Birthdays Center because she really needed to vent. She turned on her cell phone, she called their number and she heard : "We are having technical difficulties, please stand by…". She stood by, but nothing happened. So, she tried again a few minutes later and she heard the same voice : "We are having technical difficulties, please stand by…". Once again, nobody answered her call, so she hung up the phone.
Chikorita was very upset and she decided to go on her favorite Pokemon forum to calm down. On that fantastic forum, she saw that one of her online friends had made an awesome birthday thread for her, which made her smile immediately. That meant a lot to her!
Who was that sweet Pokemon who made her that awesome birthday thread? You, PXR members, will decide it!

Your prompt this week:
What can I do to make the prompt better?
I'll nibble. I read these things all the time but I don't usually say anything.
I would say go with prompts that stray away from the everyday stuff. The stuff we've all probably done before or happen all the time in real life every hour of the day. Stray more into the weird, odd, uncanny, fantastical, and mysterious stuff instead that never happens. Prompts are really meant to push a writer out of writer's block and hit them with things and inspiration they haven't seen before. Not to mention readers would like to read about things that take them away from reality for a while and make them think in a whole new way.
I would say go with prompts more like these:
Normally your character wouldn't be shocked and alarmed about waking up on a normal day, and while this wouldn't seem strange to anyone else, your character distinctly remembers dying yesterday.
Your character has an amazing dream about being a dragon and hearing a voice telling them to "awaken." They wake up to start the day and everything seems normal until they find a strange claw-like marking on the back of their hand.
Ten years ago, your character walked through their hometown's streets and everything was fine and good with the world. Today, your character straps into a gas mask, body armor, protective hazard suit, and prepares their firearm in case they face the worst today.
Your character gets a text message from their father. Normally this wouldn't seem alarming, but your character's father died five years ago.
Your character used to get annoyed whenever they heard a baby cry. Today, they would do anything just to hear a child's voice once again.
All of these touch base on things that almost never happen to anyone and I feel like these kinds of things make for the best writing prompts. There's nothing wrong with using "how are your characters coping with the cold" or things like that, but most of us have dealt with the everyday stuff before. I think to really nab a reader in well and to kill off Writer's Block for a writer, there's got to be something deeper, darker, and stranger for them to explore.

We all know Bulbasaur is one of Ash's most reliable Pokemon. But what do you think his life was like in the Hidden Village before he met Ash?
Hello everybody! Here is my story for the prompt of this week. There are sad elements in the story :
The Bulbasaur who would eventually become Ash’s Bulbasaur was born in a forest near Cerulean City. He grew up there, surrounded by his parents.
As he was getting older, he became more and more independent. One day, when he was walking alone in the forest, he met another male Bulbasaur. Both Bulbasaurs immediately fell in love with each other. Consequently, Ash’s future Bulbasaur started spending less time with his parents and more time with his boyfriend. They loved each other very much.
A few weeks later, when the Bulbasaurs were kissing each other and "holding vines", Ash’s future Bulbasaur’s parents saw them. That’s how they found out that their son is gay, and they were really upset about that. As a result, they brutally attacked both Bulbasaurs and they abandoned their son.
Both Bulbasaurs were severely injured during the attack. Fortunately, soon after it, Melanie found them and brought them to the Hidden Village. She took care of them as well as she could and they did their best to stay strong together.
Eventually, Ash’s future Bulbasaur recovered from his injuries, but his boyfriend died due to his injuries. The surviving Bulbasaur had loved his boyfriend until the end and was heartbroken about his death. He cried for weeks as he was grieving.
While Bulbasaur was grieving, Melanie did her best to take care of him and of the other Pokemon of the Hidden Village. Eventually, Bulbasaur started helping Melanie take care of them, in order to avoid them suffering like he had suffered. After all, that’s what his compassionate boyfriend would have wanted.
For a few years, Bulbasaur helped Melanie take care of the other Pokemon of the Hidden Village… until Ash and his friends arrived there.
This story could also explain why Bulbasaur says "Just call me an orphan. I have no family." in the episode "Island of the Giant Pokemon".

Hello everybody! Here is my story for the prompt of this week. As a warning, the characters in the story get something more serious than a cold or the flu :
Meowth, Eevee, Skitty and Munchlax were having a picnic to celebrate their friendship and their joy of being together. After the picnic, they decided to go for a walk.
During the walk, they saw a tree with a strange berry on it. That berry was long, green, yellow and white, exactly like a Serperior. Munchlax was still hungry after the picnic, so he ate the strange berry. Then, the four Pokemon continued to walk together.
They were almost back home when Meowth noticed that Munchlax was surrounded by light :
"Munchlax, why are you surrounded by light?", Meowth asked.
"Meowth, Skitty, Eevee, you will always be my best friends. Thank you very much.", Munchlax replied.
"Thank you, Munchlax. You are one of my best friends as well. But what do you mean?", Eevee questioned.
"What’s happening to you?", Skitty worried, as the light was getting brighter.
"I’m going to disappear now.", Munchlax announced. "Please take care of each other. Even after I disappear, I will never forget you."
After saying these words, Munchlax disappeared. Of course, the remaining Pokemon cried due to losing their friend. As soon as they stopped crying, they tried to figure out why Munchlax disappeared. The three Normal-type Pokemon thought that eating the strange berry caused their friend to disappear. As none of them had eaten that berry, they thought that they were not going to disappear like Munchlax did.
However, a few days later, Meowth was surrounded by a bright light as well :
"Oh no, Meowth! Are you going to disappear as well?", Skitty gasped.
"What will we do without you?", Eevee sniffled.
"Thank you for being my fantastic friends, Eevee and Skitty. I couldn’t have asked for better friends. Like Munchlax before me, I’m going to disappear.", Meowth confirmed. "Please keep on taking care of each other. Even though I’m about to disappear, I will always remember you."
After Meowth said these words, he disappeared. Skitty and Eevee cried again due to losing another friend. When they managed to calm down, they wondered why Meowth disappeared :
"Our friend Meowth disappeared despite not eating that strange berry.", Eevee started. "So, I’m wondering why he disappeared. Do you have any idea, Skitty?"
"I have no idea, Eevee.", Skitty answered. "However, Munchlax and Meowth both disappeared after being suddenly surrounded by light. That’s why I think we should live in the darkness, with as little light as possible, in order to avoid disappearing like our friends. What do you think of that?"
"Skitty, you are a genius!", Eevee exulted. "Let’s start living in the darkness together!"
That’s how Eevee and Skitty started living in the darkness. They didn’t go outside during the day, but they enjoyed walking around together at night before going to bed. However, they still needed some light, especially when using the bathroom…
Unfortunately, a few days later, a bright light suddenly appeared on Skitty in spite of the darkness :
"Oh, Skitty, Skitty! Please don’t disappear!", Eevee shouted.
"I’m sorry, Eevee. I wish I could spend more time with you.", Skitty apologized.
"Please don’t leave me! If you go, my heart will be broken!", Eevee cried.
"Eevee, thank you for being such an awesome friend to me. I’m thankful I got to know you, but I’m going to disappear soon.", Skitty murmured. "Please take care of yourself. I may be disappearing, but I will never forget you."
Skitty disappeared after saying these words, while Eevee cried a lot, now that she had lost all her friends. When she couldn’t cry anymore, she started wondering why all her friends had to disappear. "Munchlax disappeared with a bright light after eating a strange berry. Then, Meowth disappeared with a bright light despite not eating the strange berry. And then, Skitty disappeared with a bright light despite not eating the strange berry and in spite of the darkness… So why did they all have to disappear? Oh Arceus, creator of all Pokemon, please explain me what is going on!", Eevee thought.
The following night, Arceus appeared in Eevee’s dream :
"Oh Arceus, creator of all Pokemon, thank you very much for visiting my dream! Why did all my friends disappear?", Eevee inquired.
"Serperiors are very charming and clever Pokemon, aren’t they?", Arceus asked.
"Yes, they are.", Eevee responded.
"The Serperior-like berry that Munchlax ate was the berry of the knowledge of good and evil. Because a Pokemon has eaten that berry, all Pokemon have become mortal, including the Pokemon who are not born yet. You say that your friends disappeared, but actually, they died. Even though your attempt to protect Skitty was admirable, it was useless because death will happen regardless of presence or absence of light. And one day, you will die as well. Because you are mortal, Eevee.", Arceus explained.
"Oh Arceus, creator of all Pokemon, thank you very much for this explanation. I miss my friends and I feel lonely and heartbroken.", Eevee lamented. However, Arceus was no longer in her dream.
When Eevee woke up, she thought about her situation. She had already suffered a lot due to the death of her friends and she would die as well eventually. In addition, Arceus had told her that the Pokemon who are not born yet are mortal too. That’s how she decided that she would never breed, because she didn’t want to sentence other Pokemon to suffering and death, especially without their consent. And because she decided that she would never breed, it meant that she would never have to watch her hypothetical offspring die, and that her hypothetical offspring would never have to watch her die. This thought made Eevee feel slightly happier. Soon after that, because she had just spent several days in the darkness and because she started feeling slightly happier, she evolved into a beautiful Umbreon.
After her evolution, Umbreon started turning on the lights and going outside during the day again, because she knew that living in the darkness was useless. She spent the rest of her life helping and cheering up unhappy Pokemon. After all, she wanted to make the world of Pokemon a better place, and that’s what her late friends would have wanted too.
I'm going to mention EmeraldSky because she is in charge of the Weekly Prompt Thread. However, I don't know who else may be interested in this story.

EmeraldSky I'm not sure if this fits the prompt, because it's not that different from the actual Pokemon games.
When I was about 10 years old, I asked myself : "What if the player of Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald came from a garbage truck instead of a moving truck?". I thought about that, but I didn't write it down at that time, so I'm going to write it down now :
You start your adventure coming out of a garbage truck. Your mother comes closer to you : she is happy to see you, but she tells you that you smell terrible and that you should take a bath. Then, she shows you three dirty Pokemon who should take a bath as well. She asks you to choose which Pokemon will take a bath together with you :
-Treecko, the Grass-type Pokemon, has a type advantage against two gyms, the legendary mascot of Pokemon Ruby and the legendary mascot of Pokemon Sapphire. However, Treecko is weak against two other gyms.
-Torchic, the Fire-type Pokemon who gains the Fighting type after evolving, has a type advantage against two gyms after evolving. However, Torchic's evolved forms are weak against the last three gyms, the legendary mascot of Pokemon Ruby and the legendary mascot of Pokemon Sapphire.
-Mudkip, the Water-type Pokemon who gains the Ground type after evolving, has a type advantage against three gyms and the legendary mascot of Pokemon Ruby after evolving. Mudkip's evolved forms only have one weakness, but it is a double weakness.
Choose your starter Pokemon and take a bath with your new friend.
After you finish bathing, your mother tells your brother/sister to take a bath with a Pokemon as well. At first, you feel guilty because you were able to choose a Pokemon before him/her, but he/she tells you that he/she didn't want the Pokemon you chose anyway. Then, he/she picks the Pokemon who has a type advantage against yours. The Pokemon who is weak against yours stays with your mother.
After your brother/sister finishes bathing with his/her Pokemon, he/she challenges you to a Pokemon battle. Your Pokemon and his/her Pokemon are both level 5 and they don't know any moves of their own type yet, so this battle should not be too difficult.

Hello everybody! This story counts for both the writing prompt of this week and the PXFIRE Humor Challenge of this week.
It was a nice summer day in the world of Pokemon. Chimchar had a lot of vegetables in his fridge, so he decided to invite his best friend Aipom to prepare vegetable soup.
After washing and cutting all the vegetables, they started preparing the soup itself :
"Good water for the soup...", Aipom began.
"And fire to heat up the water!", Chimchar added.
"Green beans for lots of vitamins...", Aipom continued.
"And spinach for a great poop!", Chimchar grinned.
"Carrots maintain eye health...", Aipom declared.
"And peas... or are they pees?", Chimchar joked.
"Cabbage is good for your heart...", Aipom announced.
"And broccoli will make you fart!", Chimchar concluded.
After putting all the vegetables in the hot water, Aipom and Chimchar had to wait for a while. Then, they finished preparing the soup. When the soup was ready, it was time to try it :
"Thank you for preparing vegetable soup with me, Aipom! How about you try it first?", Chimchar suggested.
"Thank you for inviting me, Chimchar! And thank you for letting me try the soup first!", Aipom replied.
Aipom tried the soup, but she spat it immediately :
"Chimchar, the soup is rotten! When did you buy the vegetables?!", Aipom screamed.
"According to the receipt, I bought them on June 20.", Chimchar answered.
"Could I please see the receipt?", Aipom asked.
"Sure, it's in the trash can.", Chimchar explained.
"Well, I guess one Pokemon's trash really is another Pokemon's treasure...", Aipom sighed.
"June 20... 2017?! The vegetables we put in the soup had expired over one year ago! No wonder the soup is rotten!", Aipom yelled.
"Oops, I should have been more careful... Sorry, Aipom. What are we going to do with the rotten soup?", Chimchar questioned.
"We're going to throw it away in your garden.", Aipom decided.
So, Chimchar and Aipom went to Chimchar's garden and threw the soup away. When they were doing that, a Purrloin came closer to them and looked at the soup.
"That's rotten vegetable soup, Purrloin.", Chimchar described.
"You shouldn't eat that.", Aipom went on.
As soon as Aipom and Chimchar finished throwing the soup away, Purrloin went away. As for the two monkey-like Pokemon, they reconciled with each other and they remembered that day for a very long time.

Hi Emerald! Here is my story :
One day, Dustox decided to visit her cousin Beautifly, who had been living in another timezone for a few years.
The moth Pokemon was feeling exhausted after her 8 hour flight to "the past". Fortunately, the butterfly Pokemon picked up his cousin at the airport.
"Welcome here, Dustox! It's nice to see you!", Beautifly greeted.
"Thank you, Beautifly. I'm glad to see you as well, but I'm so tired...", Dustox yawned.
Then, they went to Beautifly's house. When they arrived there, Dustox asked him what time it was. He told her that it was 8 PM.
"I feel as if it's 2 AM", Dustox answered.
"That's normal, because your timezone is six hours ahead of mine", Beautifly stated. "Although you are tired, I recommend you not to go to bed too early, so that you can adjust to the timezone."
So, Beautifly showed the house to Dustox, they had dinner together, they played some calm games together, they went to the bathroom (not together), they said good night to each other and they went to bed.
Because of the jet lag, Dustox woke up at 4 AM and couldn't go back to sleep afterwards. So, she played on her phone until Beautifly woke up. He was sorry to hear that his cousin had been awake since 4 AM.
On that day, Beautifly and Dustox went to the nearest meadow to gather pollen and nectar from inside the flowers. They had planned to stay there for several hours, but Dustox passed out from exhaustion after one hour. As a result, both cousins ended up going back to Beautifly's house earlier than expected.
In the following few days, Dustox's jet lag gradually went away, until she was fully adjusted to the new timezone after a week. Unfortunately, it was time for her to go back home...
During the first night after she got back home, she couldn't sleep until 5 AM... and it was almost noon when she woke up. She was disappointed because she knew that she had wasted so many hours in the morning.
On the following day, she woke up at 9 AM. And on the day after that one, she woke up at 11 AM. One week after her flight back home, she was finally fully adjusted to her timezone again.
"The trip to my cousin's house was great, but the next time I travel to another timezone, I will start shifting my sleep schedule a few days before my flight!", Dustox thought.

At first, Chikorita escaped the heat by spending a few days... in a place even hotter than her hometown. Effectively, her accommodation there had air conditioning. She went there in order to meet up with Grovyle, her online friend of 8 years. They had lots of fun together and they didn't suffer too much from the high temperatures because they spent plenty of time in Chikorita's accommodation.
A few weeks later, Chikorita escaped the heat by going to the other side of the Pokemon world, where it was winter. She met up with four online friends there : Altaria, Flareon, Latios and Archen. They did lots of fun activities together, such as walking in the city, celebrating Altaria's birthday, going to a forest and a mountain and much more. Chikorita enjoyed being upside down and in the future, she tried Vegemite and loved it, she learned slang words such as "bogan", and she had fun saying things such as "Chuck a U-ey, mate!" and "She'll be right!". She was having so much fun that she really didn't look forward to going back home.
... And there are (and will be) more details on Chikorita's blog! :)
