Eh, basically you just pull up a list of castles in the menu or go straight to one of your friends' castles. You can talk to their character who has a set greeting. You can simply choose to battle them but you're only battling a computer. Actually, I think the most interesting choice they made of featuring your character as the dragon. :D

You get your own castle. You can customize it to a point. You can't build it from the ground up but you can put different kinds of stores and stuff in it. You can exchange gifts between games and whatnot. I haven't used that element much because I mostly got it just for the story. You name it and visit other people's castle and challenge them. I gotta say I like the mages in Nohr a little more but they're still amazing in Hoshido~

I'm not very good at them either; I played birthright in casual as well. But if you ever get the game and you like Japanese you should check out my castle--I went all out with the Japanese theme (I still cringe when I see other birthright players who keep Ft. in their castle name x_o). My character Katsu's design is kinda based on Athrun Zala from Gundam Seed and his battle cry is even Japanese. haha

It does work very well. I really liked the wind tribe that you will meet early in the game and the character Rinkah, although she was surprisingly sorta useless unless you change her class. The kinshi knights are awesome as well, and I will always respect that racist pineapple lord. xD Having Corrin and Azura around helps him see the light a bit and it's interesting watching his growth. No spoilers on that account but some tragic stuff happens that helps along the way.
