Art Spotlight: PokéFoxFestival 2020 Ask Blog Event

Check out this cool winter event that’s going on in the Pokémon Ask Blog community!

It’s no secret to anyone involved with the ask blog community that seasonal events are very popular, especially around this time of year. These events often last for around a month and feature a variety of activities for the characters from various ask blogs to participate in. It makes for a fun break for the characters since they’re able to relax and participate in fun activities such as snow ball fights, riding down water slides, or costume contests.
This year is no different, with the winter event for this season kicking off this past November 23. However, one thing that is different from years past is that this event is combination of three separate events. In the past, hosts of these events would hold them at the same time, making it a bit of dilemma for ask bloggers trying to decide which to go to. However, this year the hosts have combined their efforts into one giant event, the PokéFox Festival. We’ll be detailing about the event below and featuring some event related posts that have been made thus far.
    What is an Ask Blog?

Some of you may be wondering what exactly an ask blog is, as they are not as popular as in the days of yore and are far less well known than their webcomic cousins. Ask blogs, primarily hosted on the website Tumblr, are interactive storytelling blogs that progress through their story through the use of questions submitted by the audience. These can be either primarily text or image based depending on the author’s comfort level and are not limited to just Pokémon, with ask blogs existing for all sorts of fandoms. The most infamous ask blogs are the Oncelers ask blogs that some older readers might remember from many years ago, but some other notable ask blogs include Ask Frisk and Company, Ask Human Perry the Platypus, and Ask Canterlot Musicians. I even have a couple ask blogs of my own: The Shaymin Café and Ask Team Lightbringers. They exist as another form of storytelling similar to Webcomics with more Choose Your Own Adventure elements to them featuring casts that are often alternate universes of pre-existing characters, or original casts and stories based on a particular franchise.
The Pokémon Ask Blog community is a particularly active one, though it notably saw a rise in an activity with the popularity of Ask Team Hope. And while that blog has not updated in some time, many others have grown quite large in its place. These blogs come in all shapes and styles featuring wildly different casts, some that include humans and some that don’t. It’s very interesting to see the stories and characters that come out of each one since no two blogs are exactly alike. For example, the blog Crewel Intentions is one we have featured on Crossroads Comics here before. It focuses on a human named Yuko and her partner Pokémon, Crewel, both of which were previously members of Team Rocket. Another blog, called Neverland Faerai, focuses on a species of Fairy-type Darkrai that exist in the Fae Realm, a pocket dimension that developed without Arceus’ intention. Finally, Ask the Traveller centers around a young Arceus trying to recollect all her plates in preparation for the creation of a new universe. She currently carries a set of twins, Space and Time, and with each plate she collects, the babies grow stronger. The Traveller’s goal is to one day safely deliver them so that she might be able to create a new universe with them. And this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Pokémon blogs. There are plenty more with all sorts of plots and characters, some more anchored in their source material than others, but all acting as a venue for people to express their creativity through the variety of stories and ideas they can come up with.
    The 2020 PokéFoxFestival Event

    https://korihyo-fox-festival.tumblr....s-the-rules-to

So what exactly is the PokéFoxFestival? This event is a winter event that began on November 23 and lasts through January 5th. It is co-hosted by three members of the ask blog community, Maple, Blue, and Vega. These three also run several other prominent blogs in the community. Blue runs Pokecommunityevents, Maple runs The Void Between Worlds, and Vega runs Poke-Mononoke, to list a few examples. While initially these three had plans for winter events that conflicted with one another, eventually they came together to create the PokéFoxFestival!
As detailed in this post, the festival takes place at three shrines: Hansha Shrines, Hizachi Shrine, and Mirai Shrine, as well as the common grounds in between each of the three shrines, known as the town of Korihyo. In Korihyo, muses are able to go ice skating, have snowball fights, build snowmen, go sledding, gather by the bonfire to keep warm, and much more. All your typical winter type activities are available to them there! In addition, inside the large building in town, muses will enter a magnificent ball room where a masquerade ball is being held, along with a lounge to relax in. While in the ball room muses are required to wear a formal outfit and mask. There is music for dancing and tables of treats. If they tire and need a rest, muses can head upstairs to the lounge and sleeping quarters! Then, when muses are ready to visit the shrines, they will head to the path with the red Torii gates and find a stall selling fox masks. To continue onwards, muses will need to be wearing one of these masks, or one of their own that they’ve brought. Spirit, the one selling the masks, can be found on Maple’s blog. Muses also have the option to either buy a mask, or exchange it for the mask they are wearing at the ball, but they also run the risk of not getting their masks back if they do so. Though notably, if the muse is a fox themself, they are not required to wear a mask, and can even set up shop stalls on the shrine grounds. From there, muses can take any of the three paths available to them to visit the various shrines. The path to the left will lead visitors to Hansha Shrine, one of the smaller shrines which sends prayers to Articuno for Repentance and forgiveness. There are also a few game and food stalls there to enjoy! The far right path leads to Mirai Shrine, which prays to Moltres for Guidance. Amongst the stalls of food and games visitors will find one that a fortune teller who, for a price, will tell them what they see. And finally, the center path leads to the great Hizachi shrine! This large, magnificent shrine, honors Tsutsuki, the fox god. Prayers of prosperity and success can be heard here. Tt’s much larger and has plenty of room to gather so there is a wider variety of stalls at this location.

The event also has a rough schedule for participants to follow, though it’s not very strict and acts more as a guidance system for mods to keep in mind as they answer asks. November 23rd – November 30th was the arrival period, when most ask blogs would join the event and formally introduce their characters, though blog may join or leave at any point during the event. December 1st – December 7th acts as the official start of the festivities. The party is now in full swing, so muses can visit the shrines and dance at the masquerade ball as they please. December 24th – December 29th is the celebration period. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and the parade are all within this time so mods can use it to exchange gifts and gather with friends. December 30th – January 1st is the time for fireworks. To wrap up the year, fireworks will be lighting up the sky and new year wishes will be told. Finally, January 2nd – January 5th will be the time for everyone to pack up and depart for home.
    Posts Thus Far

At this point the event has entered its second week and the festivities are already starting to kick off, so let’s highlight some of our favorite posts thus far to show just what all kinds of fun the different ask bloggers are getting up to this winter season!
    Ask the Traveller

    https://askthetraveller.tumblr.com/p...en-are-growing

Poor Traveller here is just trying to get acquainted with the other festival go-ers, but it seems her babies have other plans. Space and Time definitely appear to be mischief makers to me.
    Ask–Star

    https://ask–star.tumblr.com/post/636247074938224640/oh-youre-requesting-a-snowball-fight-are-you

When there’s this much snow up on the mountain, it’s impossible to not have some snowball fights along the way. But it appears Dyson and Kahli are taking it a lot more seriously than some of the other participants. This’ll definitely be a battle for the ages!
    Crewel-Intentions

    https://crewel-intentions.tumblr.com...-you-mentioned

It seems for Crewel and Joule this festival provided a great opportunity for reunions! It’s always great to get to see loved ones again, especially if you haven’t had the chance to interact with them in a while. Plus this cold weather makes for a great excuse to have a bunch of bear hugs!
    Ask-WillowLeafeon

    https://ask-willowleafeon.tumblr.com...ut-here-than-i

That said, this weather isn’t meant for everybody! Willow sure doesn’t seem to like it all that much. Thankfully Shelly here is ready to provide a berry in hopes of defrosting the Leafeon a little bit.
    The Red Vaporeon

    https://theredvaporeon.tumblr.com/po...i-i-noticed-ya

Being a fire type has its perks! Especially when it’s as chilly as it is. Though the way that egg is glowing, perhaps it’s generating a bit of heat of its own as it gets ready to hatch soon.
    Blazing-Destiny

    https://blazing-destiny.tumblr.com/p...hes-the-little

It’s not just art blogs getting involved either, written blogs are participating too! Here we can see Darren being a true pal to Crewel by raising his body temperature so that it’s not quite as chilly for the little ghost type.
    Neverland Faerai

    https://neverlandfaerai.tumblr.com/p...-two-swam-over

Sometimes reunions aren’t always so sweet. At least in this case, Fen seems to have made a case of mistaken identity there for a moment. Thankfully it was quickly resolved and the trio could go back to relaxing by the fire.
    Shaymin Café

    https://shaymincafe.tumblr.com/post/...comicfury-also

One thing the holidays can be great for is giving couples a chance to hang out and relax. Chicory and Vetle seem to be really enjoying themselves here, even answering questions about their relationship and what they like about each other.
    Ask-Backpack-Hypno

    https://ask-backpack-hypno.tumblr.co...k-protected-me

Sometimes even members of rare species get to interact with one another! Vesna doesn’t seem as enthused to meet Vetle and Chicory as they are to meet her, but that also might be because of the ensuing snowball fight. Perhaps over the next few days we’ll see them migrating indoors.
So what do you think? Looks like a fun time right? If you’re interested to see more, be sure to check out #pokefoxfestival2020 over on Tumblr to see all the event antics that are going on!

Fun fact, if you view this article on the site itself (instead of on the forum), you'll see the cast of Shaymin Café appears 6 times! Ironically this was not intentional and entirely subconscious. XD
