Time to celebrate the 25 anniversary in the TCG!
Not only is it the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise but it is the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon TCG! And they are going to celebrate in the only way they know how! Showcasing cards of all our favorite Pokemon along with some old mechanics! All of this and more in this Fall’s mini-set, Celebrations!
What is Celebrations?

Celebrations is the Pokemon TCG’s 25th anniversary set. This will be a mini-set made up of several cards but will feature a sub-set of 25 cards.
In this subset you will see close remakes of iconic cards such as Base Set Charizard, Umbreon ?, and Tapu Lele-GX. You will also see some more recent Pokemon such as Dragapult and Sylveon undergo the retro treatment with some old mechanics such as Light Pokémon, Delta Species (?) Pokémon, and Pokémon Star.
Other cards that you will see in Celebrations are some classic favorites such as Pikachu, Zamazenta and Professor Oak. These cards and more will all be foil and include the 25th anniversary logo.
How to Collect Celebrations?

You can only receive Celebrations booster packs from special products that are being release this Fall. These products will feature booster packs that contain 4 cards in them. Each card will have unique artwork and, as mention before, all foiled.

Thoughts

Personally, I think the biggest piece of news from Celebrations is the return of classic mechanics. While some such as Prime and Dark Pokemon won’t cause that much of a splash in the TCG. Things like Delta Species will be pretty interesting to see. Most players, including myself, never played with these old mechanics and it will be fun to see how they will be depicted in the modern day. Especially with Pokemon who were not around during that era such as Dragapult and Sylveon. It will be interesting to see what kind of art they will use to depict a Dark Sylveon.
The mention of Umbreon ? and Tapu Lele-GX returning as “close remakes” may make an even bigger splash for collectors and players.
When it comes to Umbreon ?, that means we will see a Shiny hunt when it comes to Celebrations. All of the Star Pokemon are Shiny Pokemon. There was such as thing called the ? Rule which states you can only have one of them in your deck. Though, not all of the Star Pokemon were playable. Either way, it will surely make TCG Shiny hunters excited to collect this set.
Meanwhile, a “close remake” of Tapu Lele-GX will make current players of the TCG excited. Tapu Lele-GX has the Wonder Tag ability. This ability allows you to grab a Supporter from your deck and put it into your hand. That is a pretty useful ability when all you have is a Pokemon search card and need a Supporter. Most likely it won’t come back as a GX Pokemon. Perhaps more as a V Pokemon. Though, will the reprint it with the Wonder Tag ability? Only time will tell.

Lastly, the announcement of Celebrations is the first time we are hearing about V-Union outside of Japan. One of the products mention is a Pikachu V-Union Collection. Based on the product image, it will contain all four pieces that will make up Pikachu V-Union. While we don’t know what Pikachu V-Union is, it is giving as an idea that it will be made up of four cards. Granted, we know what the V-Union mechanic is but those who don’t will be hearing about this for the first time due to the Celebrations announcement.
It really does look like the Pokemon TCG is throwing a big party this Fall to celebrate. It is not only the 25th anniversary of the Pokemon franchise but also the TCG. And the TCG is pulling all the stops by the sound of it and invited everybody from Light/Dark Pokémon, Delta Species Pokémon, and Pokémon Star!
Will you be there? We hope so because the party starts on October 8th! Be there or be without a rectangle!
