Superhero Code Name: Rocket
Name: Blair Mullins
Sex: Male
Age: 19
Appearance:
Blair is slightly shorter than the average male of his age, standing at 5ft7, however, given his use of his edge relies heavily on getting up close and personal, he is well built and muscular from years of training. His hands bear a few odd scars from accidental burns, when Blair had transmuted something into thermal or electrical energy in a way he hadn’t intended, however it has been many years since an occurrence such as this.
He has deep blue eyes, and jet black, shaggy hair, which is due for a trim soon. To his dismay, he is unable to grow a respectable beard, so remains clean-shaven. His face is lightly freckled.
In his civilian outfit, Blair tends to try and choose clothing that will allow him to, if need be, use his Edge as comfortably as he would in his hero outfit. He wears a pair of rubber soled work boots in order to insulate him from the ground, as well as carries a pair of leather gloves, lined internally by rubber. Should he throw a punch while wearing them, he can convert the kinetic energy of the displaced air into electrical energy, without shocking himself. This also allows for static electricity to build up, and by extension, be converted into thermal or kinetic energy. By extension, his outfits tend to be light loose, allowing easy, unrestricted movement. Normally a pair of shorts, with a tee, underneath a sleeveless, zip-up hoodie, allowing him to cover his face if he needs to remain anonymous.
His hero outfit takes this focus on his Edge, but dials it up to eleven. Rubber soled boots and rubber lined gloves are a staple, allowing him ease of use of his power when transmuting into electrical energy, and a happy side effect of that being a resistance to electrokinetic villains. However, the outside of the gloves themselves are made of Kevlar, granting some fire resistance, should he transmute energy into heat during a punch.
His outfit is reminiscent of motocross armour, with the padding replaced with a non-Newtonian fluid, which will move with and around Blair, but harden instantly upon impact. The armour itself is black, with orange highlights. He wears a mask, with a large visor that covers his entire face, tinted black, allowing him to see out but nobody to see in, leaving the rest of his head exposed, if not for the black hood.
Personality: Blair is generally friendly and easy to get along with, but a touch naive and immature, given his age and lack of experience, as well as his own view of his skill with his Edge. He is not an intellectual, struggling with science and maths, despite the fact that a deeper understanding of science would allow him to use his Edge exponentially better. Instead, he focuses his training on the physical elements of his Edge, focusing on fitness, strength and agility, as well as quick reflexes. Because of this, he does not even attempt to use his power to its full potential. The basics, with the amount of diligence and effort he has put into them, allowed him to graduate near the top of his class, so instead of learning the more intricate parts of his power, he focuses on refining the basics even further. His firm grasp of these basics, and how well he can use them has caused him to grow a little arrogant when it comes to his Edge, and content with the extent of it. Additionally, Blair is a little idealistic, sometimes viewing his hero-work, a little too much through the rose colored glasses of the media’s portrayal of it.
History: Blair was born to a single mother in Southside, Castelia City. Whilst she was married, her husband, Blair’s father who was an active hero, was killed in the line of duty in 2035, during his wife’s pregnancy. Having only just opened his own hero agency, accruing debt in the process, his death had financial ramifications. With nobody willing to step up and lead the agency, it was quickly dissolved, with employees being paid out, and debts paid off, and despite being compensated financially for the loss of her husband, it wasn’t enough to cover the debts he had taken out to open his agency, effectively leaving his wife to pay them.
Whilst Blair was one of the last in his class, outside of those who didn’t altogether, to develop an Edge, once it was identified, the adults in his life realised how long it had been present, estimating his first evolution happening at age five. It was first noticed when he was seven, in the playground, a stray soccer ball from a nearby game, missed its mark, and was on a collision course with Blair’s face. Instinctively he held his hands up, and despite the ball being kicked by someone with a strength enhancing edge, a kick from whom should have broken Blair’s hand, the ball seemed to fall out of the air in the moment between making contact with his hand, and the force travelling through it and into his bones. When the ball was inspected, there was a charred and melted handprint. Rumors quickly circulated that Blair was Pyrokinetic, however no flames were visible to any onlookers, and even a professional level Pyrokinetic would struggle to produce flames with enough thrust to stop the ball the way it had been.
Given the anomaly that Blair’s Edge was, he was monitored closely by his mother and teachers. It was his mother who first put the pieces together, noticing his Edge being used subconsciously. She noticed that even during the most intense heatwaves, Blair was always unphased by the heat, and during any sort of sports, actually seemed to excel in the heat, which they later realised was him converting the heat energy into kinetic energy. She noticed that considering how often he played portable video games, he never seemed to run out of battery, converting nearby sound energy into electrical energy. Or the times during winter when the lights flickered. She had attributed it to the shoddy electrical grid of Southside, however during summer when the entire apartment building were using their air conditioners, the lights didn’t flicker. She realised that when he was cold, he was converting the light and electrical energy into heat.
Until Blair was eight, and had his second evolution, he had no conscious control of his Edge. It seemed purely to activate subconsciously, when there was some need to be met by it. If he was too warm, it could cool him down and vice-versa. If he wanted to keep playing video games without changing batteries, it would sustain them. And if he wanted to not have his face smashed in by a rogue soccer ball, it would remove the kinetic energy, converting it to heat instead, and removing all danger from it.
After having his second Evolution, Blair set his sights on becoming a hero, though given the lack of readily available funds, tuition in one of the premier hero programs was not affordable. Blair’s mother however, informed him of the scholarships that existed, and the need to earn one.
As such, Blair dedicated himself to training his Edge, learning quickly how to transmute kinetic, thermal, electric and sound energy. For an elementary school student, learning these concepts was extremely difficult, however once he understood them, they became the staple of his Edge. When it came time to choose a High School, Blair applied for the Blackstone High School Hero Prep Course, and managed to earn a scholarship.
The next four years were spent refining his Edge. Whilst he by this point had given up on learning of other forms of energy, seeing the time better invested in improving further in the four he knew, he focused on making transmutation second nature, not requiring the immense concentration it did originally, but instead, being able to perform the transmutations he practised with little more than a thought.
Additionally, outside of a few close friends sworn to secrecy, and the staff of Blackstone High, Blair kept his Edge a secret. Despite the massive potential it housed, with the current limitation of only being able to perform a single transmutation at a time, it presented a very clear weakness, and should he eventually become a pro hero, he didn’t want that weakness being known. As such, it was assumed he was a hybrid Pyro and Electrokinetic with enhanced speed and strength, when really, he was none of these, simply transmuting energy to gain similar effects.
Blair finished high school, graduating near the top of his class, and when it came time to find work, Blair was offered a job as a side-kick to Supernova, a professional hero with the ability to manipulate gravity, and unknown to Blair, one of the side-kicks at his father’s former agency.
Blair has been working for Supernova for a little over a year now, with Supernova pushing Blair to learn more about the extent of his Edge, though Blair not putting in the effort to do so, seeing honing his current skills further as more worth his time. When Castelia City became overrun by Miasma, Supernova, and his side-kick Rocket, remained in the city, going into hiding, and attempting to make contact with other heroes who have since gone underground. They know that if they were to simply fight crime the way they normally would, they would be overrun. Instead, they know their best bet would be to group with other heroes, and attempt to clear out a subsection of Castelia City, which could then act as their base of operations, to clear out the rest.
Edge Superpowers: Blair’s Edge is not publicised, given the versatile nature of it. Even when he was in Blackstone High School’s Hero Prep Course, only his closest friends and the staff knew the extent of his Edge. Given the fact that people tend to assume that he is a hybrid pyro and electrokinetic, with mildly enhanced speed and strength, he doesn’t correct them, however they are simply a result of his Edge at work.
Blair’s Edge is Energy Transmutation, the ability to transmute one form of energy into another. This however, is limited by his understanding of the way the energy is being manipulated (for example, if he wishes to convert sound energy into heat energy, he has to be able to visualise accurately the energy creating sound waves, instead causing atoms to vibrate, producing heat). Currently he can only transmute kinetic, thermal, electrical and sound energy easily enough that he can use his power in a fight. The possibilities of this power, however, are endless, as the biggest limiting factor for Blair is his own understanding. Theoretically he could convert the light and heat energy from the sun into chemical energy, and never have to eat again, or the gravitational energy into kinetic energy, and effectively leap tall buildings in a single bound. Theoretically, at the risk of himself, he could convert his own chemical energy of his cells into another type for a fight, or, if he were to really understand what he was doing, use one form of energy to split the atoms surrounding him, releasing more energy, to then convert into another form.
Outside of needing to understand the forms of energy he is transmuting and how to do that, the other limitations are the following:
-Blair can currently only perform one transmutation at a time. This effectively means that if he is throwing a punch that he is using his Edge to enhance (such as adding a thermal element to it), he cannot simultaneously convert the kinetic energy of someone punching him into sound energy and negate it like he normally would. Whilst in his training he has managed to, once or twice, perform two simultaneously, the focus and concentration required is immense, and in any sort of real world situation, that, as well as the chance of failure makes it unviable.
-Whilst Blair can use his Edge to somewhat mimic other Edges, like pyrokinesis, electrokinesis or enhanced strength or speed, his body is not suited to these powers. As such, he can still burn or electrocute himself, or, should he enhance a punch, miss his mark, and it hit a concrete wall, he will break his hand. He does what he can to mitigate these risks with his hero costume.
-The range of Blair’s Edge is complex. In order to use it, he must expend some of his own energy, and the amount is based on distance. Technically, Blair can only trigger his Edge on energy within a metre radius of himself, however, once triggered, if there is an uninterrupted stream of it, he can manipulate it to any distance, his Edge acting like a vacuum, though the greater that distance, the higher energy cost. For example, if Blair were wanting to convert the sound energy from a speaker playing music, he could trigger his edge anywhere that he can hear the sound coming from it. However, if he is a hundred metres away, the energy that is within reach is minimal, compared to if he were directly next to the speaker. He could still transmute the sound energy around him from the hundred metre position, however, it would use more of his own energy. However, if he were right next to the speaker, he could manipulate all the nearby sound energy, whilst only using a small amount as it is in reach.
Pokémon Team: Zeraora, Infernape, Lucario, Greninja, Chesnaught and Gallade
NPC Sidekicks (optional):
Supernova- Pro Hero that Rocket works under
Supernova, real name Gerald Hartman, is the Pro-Hero, and leader of the Forces of Nature Agency. He has the ability to manipulate gravity. In his late 40s, he is much more grounded than Rocket, having seen just how nasty being a Pro-Hero can be, and is trying to help Rocket grow to understand that a little more, ideally without suffering the same loss he has.
Supernova was once a sidekick to Rocket’s father, who was killed in the line of duty.
