Either way is great.
All Pokemon podcasts start somewhere. This start can be anywhere from simply recording in your bedroom to simply just getting a microphone with your friends. Either way, all of the Pokemon podcasts you listen to now have found their footing. They are in a spot where they are happy with what they are producing. Well, some are still striving to do better. And that is fine.
So in this feature for Pokemon Podcast Month we want to look at some podcasts to see where they have started and what their hosts think is their best in the last year. So go ahead and join us as we look back at the the episodes of Pokemon podcast past.

Episode 1: [Pokémon Red/Blue] “Are You A Boy or A Girl?” Josh’s Thoughts: We start with each of us playing Red & Blue; I did Red because I had never played it. We chose to litigate a lot of decisions about the podcast while we recorded, and left most of it in there for posterity. Going back, we’ve gotten so much better at editing, but I also do love the innocence of our navigating the world of Pokémon and podcasting together, and I wouldn’t change a second of it.
Episode 149: Haina Desert, Ula’ula Meadow, Po Town, Malie City, and Kahuna Nanu’s Grand Trial (Ft. Greg Leatherman) Josh’s Thoughts: One of the best parts of this journey has been meeting fans of the show, and occasionally having them on as well. We’d never interacted with Greg of ISE and VRE beyond Twitter, had him on, and he was such a delight—not only because he called Tanner out for the Mayor Cheat that he is. It’s amazing when something you’ve made attracts like-minded people you can immediately start hanging out with, even on a Zoom screen.
Not A Scratch
Episode 0: My New Best Friend Anirudh’s Thoughts: The first episode of Not A Scratch would be our Arc 0 Ep 0 – My New Best Friend, as we introduce the characters and the world that they are in. I remember being really nervous to start, despite the fact that I was doing the show with a couple of long-time friends and the ability to edit any “mistakes”. Once the episode got rolling, though, I knew that it would be something we could do. At that point, the biggest wonder was whether or not people would listen (turns out, they would!).
Arc 5 Ep 20: The Monty Hall Problem Anirudh’s Thoughts: My favorite episode recorded in the last year is Arc 5 Ep 20 – The Monty Hall Problem. The episode itself focuses around a Monty Hall like problem, where we had to choose one of three doors to potentially get a beneficial situation going forward. It might not be everyone’s favorite episode, but the discussions and time spent towards picking the right decision made this one oddly fun!
PokéMakers
Episode 1: The Olcea Region JD & Alex’s Thoughts: The first episode of our first season, The Olcea Region, had us lay the groundwork for building a new Pokémon region and games. We decided which real world location would inspire our region, what our major themes and concepts would be, the titles of our game, and made our mascot Fakemon, Shimaruto. We were so excited to start, having already conceived many ideas to put our game together.
Episode 436: Pokémon North & South Finale Episode 436: The Rencia Region JD & Alex’s Thoughts: We have two! The last episode of our first season, Pokémon North & South Finale; it felt incredible to look back on everything we had made together, and how far the podcast had come since starting. By the end, we had a completed project we could look back on proudly.Conversely, we also love the first episode of our second season, The Rencia Region: this time we were excited for something new and fresh! With a blank slate, we had so much room to make something new, taking all the lessons we learnt from our first season to start from scratch with all new ideas.
We hope you enjoy this look at these Pokemon podcasts’s humble beginnings and where they are now. Surely some things have changed but the love for podcasting is still there.
Thank you and come back for our next installment of Humble Beginnings.
