Mega Evolution, Higher Spawn Rates, and More in Pokémon GO!

Check out this mega news!

Mega Evolution is coming to Pokémon GO! Starting tomorrow, you’ll be able to Mega Evolve Pokémon, specifically Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise and Beedrill. To do this, you need to collect Mega Energy for each Pokémon. This is done by defeating Mega Raids and the faster you complete Mega Raid Battles, the more Energy you will receive. But exactly how does all of this work? Well let’s break it down.

How to obtain Mega Energy

In order to supply this Mega Energy, Mega Evolution Raids will start taking place. These raids will feature Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard and Mega Blastoise and they will give the Mega Energy for each Pokémon. As part of a trade off though, Niantic are removing 2 Star and 4 Star raids from the Raid Table in order to focus on Mega Evolved Pokémon.

The Mega Evolution Mechanic

Mega Evolution lasts only a limited time, but after you Mega Evolve a specific Pokémon for the first time, the cost to Mega Evolve it will reduce. When Mega Evolved, you can participate in Gyms, Raids, Trainer Battles and GO Rocket Battles. Shadow Pokémon and Clone Pokémon cannot Mega Evolve. If a Pokémon has more than one Mega Evolution, like Charizard, players will be able to choice which Mega they want. If you use Mega Evolved Pokémon in Raid Battles, any moves of the same type as that Pokémon will get boosted. There will also be a Mega Pokédex to keep track of Mega Evolved Pokémon.

Special Research

There will be Special Research as well as events throughout September that will focus on Mega Evolved Pokémon. An event from September 1st to 7th is focused around Mega Raids, September 11 to September 17 focused on Battles with Mega Evolutions and September 22nd through September 28th there will be events about Buddy features with Mega Evolution. We’ll be sure to report on more information as it comes, but mark your calendars to participate in these events!

Increased Spawns

In addition to the Mega Evolution news, Niantic has also announced some changes to the spawns for Pokémon. According to their recent blog post, Niantic have adjusted where Pokémon spawns so that areas which were a bit more sparse before now have more Pokémon spawning there, and places that were dense are now a bit more spread out. This migration is meant to not only promote exploration on the part of the players, but also to help trainers in more rural areas with fewer spawns in the past. With this, they have said that it will continue to change more and more as people play, possibly changing every month.

So with some much to look forward to, let’s get out and GO trainers!
