I was looking at the battle instructions within the Pewter Gym thread and realized that by the logic of this system, I can not defeat Brock's onix as I only have basic Pokemon so I was wondering how to evolve a pokemon prior to that first gym battle.

If, however, the game is indeed dead as it appears to be (I actually have a month or so old Pokemon claim that hasn't been fulfilled) then I suppose it matters not.

You can, you just need to find Pokemon that are single stage, since they overcome the evolution issue. Tangela, for example, would definitely work great on Brock's Onix. You could also just get a draw on Onix and still qualify for the badge.

But yeah, I'm not sure if the event is still going on since it has gone quiet lately. I'll follow up on that.

That's true, I can draw Onix and have Cubone and Geodude beat. That would be enough to win the battle?

Since the game is dead though, I won't bother.
