Yeah the avengers it's just kinda like "you know these characters from their own movies if they have them so that's the only reason you'll like them and we won't develop their group dynamic as a result!"

Going to an unfamiliar church today as a favor to a friend. Kinda nervous. Here's to hoping they don't try to save me from myself because I'm Catholic.

Eh, I kind of stopped going because of the constant begging for donations and running second and third collections for Sisters of so-and-so and Bishop's Appeal and all this other stuff. It made it feel like the church should have an ATM right by the door.

Anyway, in your case, I would just keep showing them this if they get on your nerves:

It actually wasn't that bad. Longer church service than I'm used to (2.5 hours MY GOD. I was dead by the end) and I got some dirty looks for not taking communion (it's a catholic thing that non-practicing Catholics can't take communion at a Catholic Church so as a general rule of thumb the reverse is true, no communion from non-catholic churches) but not all that bad. The singing was actually really cool! It was all acapella and it sounded like we were an official choir or something, which was neat. Everything was fine until the message. A bit more fire and brimstone than I am used to. Like whoa. They laid that guilt on thick. Said something to the effect of "if you aren't reading from the Bible and praying daily you're damning the souls of your children and grandchildren." And I told my mom that and she laughed then said, "Well you're screwed." And I was like "apparently." Also apparently if you didn't take the bulletin then you don't care about the people whose requests are in it and I was like "it's not that I don't care, it's that I don't know any of these people."

Also it says something when the person who puts the most money in the collection plate is the one time visitor. They may have disliked I didn't eat their cheap crackers and grape juice but the fact that I gave more money at tithes than most of them says something about all of them.

But overall an interesting and fun experience. Other than the few glitches here and there I enjoy it. It's not the first time I've church hopped like that so it wasn't entirely a culture shock. Plus it was a favor for a friend.

Yeah... and they wonder why church attendance is down and atheism is on the rise. Well, when they slather on the guilt trip stuff and make threats like that, there you go. And Jesus said not to render judgment onto others. Whoops! And it doesn't make sense if they say to read from the Bible daily, but then don't do what it says and totally ignore its messages. But really, if what they're saying is true and it takes that little to be thrown into Hell, then Heaven must be a very empty, vacant, and hollow place where you can begin to question if anyone is really happy there.

But yeah, that doesn't sound like a pleasant church community and from what you told me, it doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd want to check out either. That's my thing if I ever go to a place where I don't feel like I'm welcome. Don't look back and go to the places where you do feel welcome. But like George Washington said, it's also better to be alone than be with bad company.

Yeah I mean I doubt all churches of that denomination are like that. I think it was just the pastor because other than him and one of the deacons, everyone was fairly nice. One of the old ladies even gave me candy. It was an interesting experience overall. I've always wanted to attend other churches just to experience services. Every church has a unique service overall, even churches with uniformity like the Catholic Church are all different and I've always found that fascinating. So I don't regret going. Overall it was a fun experience for me.

Also on a side note I was struck with absolutely evil inspiration for the PXFIRE RP. If we ever make it to day 6, be prepared.

I always hated going to church because I found it to be the most BORING thing ever. I think it was the sermon that would do me in. Most of the time I never paid attention because I was always thinking about something else most likely Pokemon. xD And I was raised Catholic too so I had that whole First Communion and Confirmation. I bet you'll never guess what I picked for my Confirmation name. LOL!

I've always enjoyed going to mass... Probably because I really loved singing the songs and now a whole lot of them are really nostalgic to me? Also I've never heard a fire-and-brimstone sermon at my church... That's probably really good because when people start yelling angrily if I'm in the same room I constantly feel like it's directed at me in particular.

Same. I spent the whole hour long sermon today thinking about a braviary doing gymnastics because that was more entertaining the sermon. He was doing flips all over the church. It was great.

I mean I'm a dutiful catholic that always pays attention! Shame on you for not paying attention! *shakes finger*

Nah I mean sometimes the homilies are super boring. That's actually why I enjoy the Maronite Church near my house. The homilies there are so entertaining and like half the mass is in Arabic which is really cool. The church near my college has okay homilies but some of them are boring. I've fallen asleep a couple times. I've just found that you gotta feel out the guys giving the homilies and see who you like best.

I swear if it was Mother Mary or St. Catherine.

I used to go to mass on a regular basis, but I stopped when the readings were things I heard dozens of times before and the sermons were just okay.

I usually go to an exercise class on Sunday mornings now. I may go back in the future, but I'm not sure. I doubt anything's changed in the few months I haven't been going.
