Pretty much you are assigned a country in a committee and discuss real world issues as that country. There's more to it than that but that's the basic explanation. Pretty much, Model UN is split into two categories of committees, General Assembly and Crisis Committees. General Assemblies are large and often based on real UN committees such as WHO or SPECPOL. Crisis Committees are much smaller, can be based on real UN committees but in my experience most are not, and often have updates from outside the actions of the committee. Crisis Committees usually consist of four categories: actual UN committee (most likely Security council), JCC, Fantasy, and History. The Security Council generally reflects the real life security council, has the five veto powers, and works on current events with updates that may or may not be actual real updates, for example, Israel going to nuclear war with Syria, or something like that. JCC, or Joint Crisis Committee, is two committees that have updates that impact one another or both, though they don't ever directly interact. There's no good way to explain it other than the give examples of it, the two that I know of being this past year my friends were in the RNC-DNC JCC and the previous year it was the two sides (America and England) in the War of 1812. Fantasy is pretty self explanatory, made up scenario, based on a story of sorts. The two examples I can give here are a Pirates of the Caribbean committee and the one I participated in which was the Trojan War from the perspective of the Greek gods. Then lastly, history, again, pretty self explanatory, take an instance of history and roll with it. War of 1812 would also qualify here but I've also seen the French Revolution, the American Revolution, and the Oregon Trail.
