They set the times pretty wide these days. I'm not sure what's unfair about a very long time frame. That it would have no relationship to the DS clock is natural to keep people who like cheating out of their a**es from doing just that and repetitively grabbing (IE) the Torchic Mystery Gift Event from X and Y over and over again FAR after it's release, and that aside, how would THAT work? In order for the event to be related to the DS clock (due to the fact you could just set it into whatever time fits the event), it would have to go on indefinitely, which is probably at least somewhat taxing on resources in some manner (Maybe not, but even then, you've got better use of materials). It makes no sense from any standpoint.
