What was your favorite anime that you watched this past year?
For me I guess it depends on what you're asking for.
Action wise it was definitely Drifters. I'd read an issue or two of the manga so when I heard about the adaptation I was really excited. And it totally lived up to my hype levels. It became sort of a game for me because I'm such a huge history nerd to guess who the characters were when they showed up, and except for like three or four I knew most of them, which was pretty cool. Definitely if you like the Fate series I'd recommend trying this, it's an interesting show with a second season already in the works.
Comedy wise it's probably a tie between Nanbaka and Kejio!!!!!!!. Both of them are similar in the fact that they're just intensely silly animes that are obviously making fun of some of the biggest tropes in anime ranging from power moves to literally breaking the fourth wall at some points. I think the best way to tell which one you'd watch hinges on two things. Firstly, how you can handle your fan service, and secondly, are you okay with watching ongoing animes. If you're not a huge fanservice person, then steer far away from Keijo!!!!!!!!. It's a show about girls wrestling with their butts, it's kind of self explanatory. If you're not for ongoing animes, then don't go looking at Nanbaka either. Of the five animes I watched this fall winter season it's the only one to go beyond twelve episodes so obviously it's still going. It's hilarious though so I would recommend going and watching it once it finishes.
It's also probably worth mentioning Trickster and Yuri!!! on Ice as well because they were both very beautifully done animes. Trickster was interesting because on the surface it just seemed to be some sort of detective anime that turns into a revenge plot with another subplot to it about one of the main characters. It's kind of curious in my opinion because there's this thing mentioned towards the beginning of the series that you think is going to be some huge deal and even though it is definitely part of the plot, overall it's kind of been set aside, so if there's ever future seasons I know this plot point with definitely play a role. And Yuri!!! on Ice was this season's Free. It was actually better than Free in my opinion because it does well in sort of addressing gay couples. Not extensively but it does address it. Though the ice skating scenes alone were so beautiful that I probably wouldn't have cared what the anime was about because they were all just so well done. I still find myself listening to some of the music from the show!
And while this probably doesn't count I was also binging Trigun this year and that's turned out pretty good as well. I'm not finished (like four more episodes though) but I can tell that the ending is going to be big and I'm definitely going to have to watch Badlands Rumble after this!
