I actually took a security class a few years back and the first thing we covered was Caesar Ciphers since it was the first form of encryption. For decrypting it, it was just a process of:
- Associate each symbol with a number so I didn't have to deal with the symbols themselves
- Rewrite the text using the numbers
- Do a character frequency count for the first page
From there, due to its frequency, I was pretty sure that the U looking letter was E which I was then certain of from the fact that there was a common three letter word that ended with it, which would be THE. I was pretty sure that the two letter word that's on the first page three times was either OR or OF, and then the single letter word on page two had to either be A or I. From there it was just filling out the rest of the short/common words like AND and ONE, and the rest solved itself.
